Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The Sunday Best

Morning, chaps! We've got our first big Sunday morning ahead of us. It all starts in a few moments with Arsenal kicking off their season with new boys Pepe and David Luiz on board at St. James' Park against Newcastle. That's followed by the biggie - United v. Chelski. NBC Sports are hyping it as the introduction of Christian Pulisic to the Premiership but it's a big match regardless. Join me for all the action here on the LOB!

Yes I am , thank you for asking. How about you and Kate?

8:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

As you stated, Toon vs the Gunners is on NBCSN . Foxes vs Wolves is on CNBC. I'll be watching that one on streaming video.

Sadly none of the new recruits make it into either squad. David Luiz and Pepe are both on the bench whilst Andy Carroll doesn't even make the squad.

Here's the team news:

Newcastle United (3-5-2): Dubravka; Schär, Lascelles, Dummett; Manquillo, Hayden, Shelvey, Longstaff, Ritchie; Almiron, Joelinton

Subs: Darlow, Clark, Fernández, Krafth, Willems, Saint-Maximin, Muto

Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Leno; Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Chambers, Monreal; Xhaka, Guendouzi; Nelson, Willock, Mkhitaryan; Aubameyang

Subs: Martínez, David Luiz, Torreira, Ceballos, Pépé, Martinelli, Lacazette

Referee: Martin Atkinson

It's been very relaxing, thanks. We're off to an adoption agency picnic this afternoon in Buffalo. Might have to skip out on the big match a wee bit early, sadly.

The Emery Board showing he's not happy with some of the veterans by starting youngsters , Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson. It was a successful loan spell last season by Nelson at Hoffenheim

Teams are in the tunnel but NBC is on an ad break.

WOW ! Wishing you and Kate great success this afternoon. You can record the match.

Arsenal already bugging me.. WHY AREN'T THEY WEARING RED?

9:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good morning, UWS. Great to have you on board

9:03 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Both teams wearing their traditional kits at the KP

9:03 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm quite liking this new Arsenal away kit - back to basics and none of this claret nonsense.

9:04 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Morning, UWS - how are you, mate?

9:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ayoze Perez, the Foxes new signing from the Toon, making his Foxes debut. The toon could really use his services.

9:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, but UWS is correct in stating that the Gunners should be wearing their home kit this match

9:06 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am doing okay. Of course, I am in depression mode as August has hit double digits!

One more year!

9:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The match at SJP is being played at much quicker pace than the one at the KP

9:07 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Tom just told me what Jose said about who can win the league?

9:07 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sounds like some decent away support from the Arsenal.

9:07 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He saiid Man City, Liverpool, Spurs and Man City's B team

9:08 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You're almost there, mate. Next year, you'll be having a laugh this time of the season. I've got 14 years left!

9:08 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Slow start to this one.

9:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I like that Wolves changed their shirt color to the darker gold

9:10 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I would say that I feel for you but you're luckily enjoying your job.

9:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ayoze wins a free kick just outside the Wolves box. The free kick from the 4th President headed away then Choudry with a shot blocked for a corner

9:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yes, I am UWS. The year will go by quickly and before you know it you will be retired too.

9:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Teachers in my district went back to work on Wednesday, so that's already three days of work missed, LOL!

9:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wonder what Gooner makes of the signing of Sideshow Bob. He would probably prefer to see our Bob

9:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Almiron down off a challenge from the French Hair Bear. The Toon don't have much depth and any injury would be massive.

9:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The rain is rather spoiling this as an affair.

9:15 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I am, thanks. Looking forward to the start of the semester.

9:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ayoize wins a Foxes corner . he's been involved early doors.

9:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Toon win a corner

9:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'll be at home thinking of both of you at work

9:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Almiron booked for diving . That was really pathetic

9:18 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Toon want a pen....awful dive!!

Gets a deserved yellow

9:18 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Both commentators make a great point
It was a small space...he probably would have been fouled

If he dove, VAR would catch it

9:19 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Off the Sunday Roast!

9:20 AM

Corner from Shelvey headed on by Sonny and Schaar then headed away by Socrates

9:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Crazy stuff bout Ozil and Kolasinac
They are under 24 hour guard after being targeted in London gang war

9:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Another corner conceded by Socrates.

9:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Toon doing surprisingly well.

9:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, UWS. Horrible news.

9:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It is crazy. That stems from an incident in which the two were robbed while in their own car!

I suspect that they've been threatened not to testify in court.

9:22 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Miki has a chance.....Johnny Wilkinson attempt there...3 points

9:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Miki with a shot well over

9:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Reiss Nelson booked for a striker's challenge while Ndidi blocks a shot from Jonny for a Wolves corner.

9:25 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great skill to get the shot off but hits it straight at the keeper

9:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Joel Linton controls a pass then gets a shot off straight to Jay Leno. Will he be the Golden Buzzer?

9:26 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We are starting off this morning like we did yesterday for the 3 o'clockers.... A GOALLESS FEST

9:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Joel Linton making his debut. He, Almiron, and Shelvey will all need to be in top form if the Toon are to survive.

9:28 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Newcastle are doing well

9:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. They're trying to socre, so perhaps we will see some in the second half in typical prem fashion

9:29 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free kick from Nelson headed wide by Xakha KHanand Ndidi just wide with a Foxes long range effort.

9:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Aubama with a close range effort turned around for a corner off a nice long ball from the back

9:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Corner overcooked and goes out of play

9:31 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I am goal starved.

9:33 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree, lads - Newcastle have been the better side. But the Gunners are starting to get into this one.

9:34 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Play stops at SJP as a Gunner's player is down. Looks like Maitland - Niles

9:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Me too. Loos like goals will be for brunch instead of brekkies.,

9:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Miki also booked for a striker's challenge

9:36 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I was just reminded of this on Instagram

During the First Ashes Test , there were a group of fans walking around Edgbaston dressed up as England's World Cup winning team. They were wearing the proper numbers and bald caps. There was also one guy on their shoulders in gold... he was the Jules Rimet

Brillant stuff

9:37 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Goal coming...loo calling

9:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Brilliant from the fans

9:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers. Thanks for the update

9:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Kate is wondering why we aren't watching Leicester, her pick for the title. They're not scoring any goals either, I said.

9:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great skill from Brucey.

9:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Please tell Kate I'm watching the Foxes on streaming video. Watching the Gunners on the telly.

9:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Blow up, ref - I need to whip out the smelling salts!

9:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kate should be pleased about the signing of Ayoze. He and Vardy should form a goal scoring partnership

9:43 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well done, mate. I'll let her know.

9:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL, Bob.

9:43 AM

A pair on non bog LOB blogging stoppage time minutes

9:46 AM

I reckon that Emery would be happy to nick a goal and run out the clock in the second half. They're not clicking at all.

9:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute of stoppage time at the Kp.

9:46 AM

it's 0-0 at the half at SJP as well as at the KP.

9:47 AM

10:04 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Tell Kate.... Foxes Shmoxes

10:04 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

No changes to either side at the interval, sadly.

10:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Second half underway from the KP

10:04 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The attendance at St. James’ Park is reportedly around 4,000 down on the average crowd. Some of that is presumably boycott-related.

10:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A day of fours in the Prem matches

10:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sounds about right . Noticed the empty seats

10:06 AM

Dendocker gives Wolves the lead off the corner

10:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Joel Willems on for Shelvey

10:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This half has started the way that the first one ended - boring.

10:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's the worst aspect of VAR - no one is going to celebrate goals in the future.

10:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just reloaded my video because it was several minutes behind. Missed how the Wolves goal was disallowed. Dendoncker must have been offside

10:16 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Arsenal take the lead

10:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Aubameyang runs through unmarked and is found by Willock. Nice finish!

0-1!

10:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL!!!AUBAMA GIVES THE GUNNERS THE LEAD

10:16 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Where did it come from... passing it around at the back

STUPIDITY!

10:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A really simple goal . Willock picked up a loose pass in midfield and the Toon defense was caught out as he passed to Aubama, who scored past the stranded Dubravka.

10:18 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

An attacking switch from Brendan Rodgers as Harvey Barnes is on for Choudry

10:18 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed, UWS. The goals that are conceded from that nonsense outweigh the possession that teams gain from playing out of the back.

10:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Toon punished for their first mistake of the match

10:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I concur as well.

10:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

One nil to the Arsenal. Non complaints from Gooner nor Simon

10:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Arsenal move up into sixth on the strength of that goal.

10:21 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I just don't understand how bosses allow it or prefer it!
They do it because it is "the right way" to play

Keep possession, do on the all intricate passing, don't kadumph it
Pass it to the keeper... he's good with his feet(Can't save anyhing but..)
Lose the ball at the top of the box... a goal down

BLOODY BARCELONA AND PEP

First look at Arsenal's new Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos who's on for Maitland-Niles.

10:25 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And Newcastle bring on a debutante as well, Allan Saint-Maximin, who seems destined to become an MUR pun. What have you got, mate?

10:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Saint-Maximin with a run and a cross cleared for a Toon corner. Almiron with a shot blocked for another corner

10:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Still working on some material. Here's one. He's Simon Templar because he's the Saint.

10:27 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am very curious what United's line up is going to be today
Should be announced any moment

10:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jesus would love to have the Saint as a teammate. Sound about right?

10:28 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

MUR should be banned

10:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pepe on for Reiss Nelson for a Gunner's debut.

10:29 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Pulisic is on the bench... good

10:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL, UWS! Music to your ears . Name that Toon and Xakha Khan singing. Sonny and Schaar as well.

10:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That is good news. He can be dangerous to other teams

10:32 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Here are the line ups
Good Guys
De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindeloff, Shaw, McTom, Pogba, Pereira, Lindy, Martial, Rashford

Bad Guys
Kepa, Azpa, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson, Jorgihho, Kovacic, Pedro, Barkley, Mount, Abraham

10:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wolves talisman , Diogo Jota replaced by Cutrone, who makes his Wolves debut. Mark Albrighton on for Ayoze for the Foxes, presumably for more width

10:33 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Just back from the bog - no goals.

10:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Benches
Mata, Young, James, Romero, Greenwood, Matic, Tuanzebe
Alonso, Kante, Caballero, Kennedy, Giroud, Pulisic, Tomori

10:35 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Just as I suspected - after days of hype about Pulisic's debut, he's not starting.

10:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice biblical reference . That's the expected United lineup and Abraham the only surprise for Chelsea. Thought Pulisic would start instead of him, but who are we to complain?

10:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Surprised to see Kante on the bench. He's done well for Chelsea and usually has a good attitude.

10:36 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The NBC suits must be having kittens - Pulisic may not even get off the bench!

10:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Surprised to see Mason Mount start ahead of Kante. Had a decent season with the Rams, but not sure if he's ready to start with a top five Prem team

10:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Saiss on for Neves for Wolves

10:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice pass from Miki, but poor control from Aubama as he failed to get a shot off. Gunners should have gone two up.

10:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Former Gunners player, EDU, their first ever technical director.

10:40 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This Saint-Maximin looks a bit lively. Scuffs his shot, though, into Jay Leno's arms.

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

he Saint turns and the Toon singing about a save from Jay Leno, who was not Berndt.

10:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Gabriel Martinelli comes on for Miki - Emery's last change.

10:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Kane isn't fully fit

10:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Final roll of the dice from the Emery Board as Martinalli on for Miki for a Gunner's debut

10:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sonny must be snickering about that long range effort from Scharr, singing well out of Toon.

10:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So they've spent all of this money on Sideshow Bob and Pepe and then he doesn't use them? What's he saving them for?

10:45 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Harvey Barnes goes on a run down the left and wins a Foxes corner

10:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sideshow Bob the only entertainer not on the pitch today. pepe came on as a sub and may be regaining fitness.

10:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Saint-Maximin goes on another tear and seems to be brought down. The play is allowed to continue and Joelinton blasts over the top.

10:48 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Kante not Kane

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A Barber Shop Quartet if stoppage time minutes at the KP. The same at SJP
