The Top 50

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Strong Top Ten but not sure of the order
I guess #1 is right?
Of course, with my Red Devil blinkers on...he only won 3 Titles
Not sure about Frank being 2
Great question , but very tough to answer. There are so many factors involved such as value for money , winning things , and how influential they were . I agree about Frank, but he's probably number two due to his longevity with the club and consistency. I would have picked King Eric number one due to value for money and the fact that United won just about everything but the CL when he played. Next would be TH 14 at number 2. I disagree with number 50 because he was injured so often and he was a good solid pro , but not great. He's probably there due to the amount of the transfer, otherwise he would be nowhere close. Juninho is another one that surprised me. A fun player to watch with Boro, but inconsistent. Did he really make Boro that much better and he must have wreaked havoc on the wage bill. I would have ranked Company and KDB higher. Other wise good choices the top 50 and some rankings too close to call. Great post
I can only comment on the Arsenal picks.
Personally, I wouldn't pick RVP. He was pretty magnificent on his day, but because of his many, many injury absences, and then his transfer demand after all the years lost to those injuries, I can't put him in this list ahead of Gilberto Silva who provided the quiet poise that made it easy for Henry and Bergkamp to express their brilliance. And I would put Gilberto Silva on this list ahead of Fabregas because Fabregas messed us about pining for Barca.
At first I didn't think of Ljungberg, but upon reflection, he did bring a new dimension to the way that Arsenal had played before. But ahead of Gilberto Silva? That's a toss-up.
Vieira deserves to be on this list, unquestionably because he too changed the Premier league with how stylish his midfield play was. Before Vieira, plodders like David Batty and Lee Bowyer were on managerial wish-lists. But again for Gooners, perhaps a little too high in the list. He too, made himself a thorn in our side by teasing us with his wantaway tendencies. I remember the summers of his last years not fondly, because he wouldn't make up his damn mind, when we all saw that he wanted away. And that indecision hurt us because we couldn't plan post-Vieira. And personally, my gripe with Vieira is that he allowed Roy Keane to bully him in the tunnel. Vieira is a big guy and even though Roy Keane is a street brawling thug, I think that was the moment to take a 6-8 match suspension and turn out Keane's lights. It will always be a missed opportunity.
Pires was effortlessly brilliant and makes this list ahead of Silva because of his skill and artistry.
But I would put Bergkamp ahead of Henry at the top. It's not that Henry is undeserving, but it's hard to remember how also-ran we were before Bergkamp arrived. He was so far ahead technically than anyone in the squad, perhaps even the league when he arrived. He had more ambition than most of the squad. He had as much impact on breaking the drinking culture as Wenger, perhaps more, because he would chase a hung-over Adams, Parlour, and Groves until they puked in practice. And he had a particularly nasty streak that gave him the edge. He would wait for a referee to call a foul on him, but if the ilk of Durkin, or Riley wouldn't protect him, he'd put an elbow on the offender that they
wouldn't soon forget. He changed everything.
Great and interesting comments fellas
Bergkamp was a Rico signing, wasn't he?
I don't believe Hazard should be so high
My first instinct when I saw the headline was "Cantona - Leeds to United" - got to be #1, right? Number 6! You're having a laugh, right? Come on. The guy won us a title and then we flogged him for a song (1.6 million!) and he won United, what, fix or six titles?). King Eric has to be #1. End of story. Full stop.
Great post, though - thanks for posting, UWS!
Totally agree...won the title every year he was in England....apart from when he decided to kick a fan....United lost the title by ONE POINT or ONE GOAL at Upton Park.... surely Cantona would have made the difference!
Rioch? Yes.
