The Europa League Continues!
The Europa League continues from Germany today, with two more Quarterfinal match-ups. It's raining here in WNY, so I've got a temporary reprieve from the afternoon errands. I'll be watching the Wolves v. Sevilla on the CBS All Access site, while Shakhtar and Basel are also playing.
Join me for all the fun, eh?

Here we go! I'm looking forward to this. For a guy who spent a lot of time this year watching Arsenal not prepare for the obvious charging runs of Commander Adama (because you cannot stop him if he's got a head of steam) I ended up admiring how the manager has taken quietly, very good players and made a very good team with them. I've thought for a while that Jimenez could be the best Mexican player for a generation. So I'm hoping that they put a sword to Sevilla.
Afternoon, Steve - great to have you around for this one. At the end of this afternoon, we could have an all-English semi final for the Europa League, with United already having booked their ticket to the next round yesterday. Come on, you Wolves!
The team news out of Germany this evening:
Wolves: Rui Patricio, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Doherty, Dendoncker, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Vinagre, Neves, Traore, Jimenez. Subs: Bruno Jordao, Pedro Neto, Gibbs-White, Jota, Ruddy, Campana, Kilman, Rasmussen, Sondergaard, Marques, Richards.
Sevilla: Bounou, Jesus Navas, Kounde, Diego Carlos, Reguilon, Banega, Fernando, Jordan, Ocampos, En-Nesyri, Suso. Subs: Vaclik, Sergi Gomez, Munir, Escudero, de Jong, Torres, Franco Vazquez, Mena, Alonso, Diaz, Genaro, Perez.
Referee: Daniele Orsato (Italy).
I need Raphael Honigstein's columns all the time and I've never seen what he looks like. He's sitting next to Ruud who truthfully looks seedy with his stubble. He needs a shave or to let it grow into a beard.
Good afternoon Bob and Steve. Here to join you for the EL action
I'm with both of you, pulling for Wolves to win today. Sunny here with all errands run for the day
Wolves vs Sevilla is underway
Wolves YES for today
Wolves NO for Sunday!!
Cross from Adama Traore is headed by Raul Jimenez straight to the keeper
Are you all on the link for the match?
Fair enough Dave. Hi you all.
I'm on CBS+
Afternoon boys
Good Afternoon Dave. Agreed about Wolves
I'm on the link
I just pulled up a link on CBS AA
Are four of us watching?
I can get off if one can't get on
Shakhtar takes an early lead vs Basel Brush
BOOM BOOM!
Hiya, boys - how are you all. I've been bounced off the stream for getting into the system too late. Oops!
Bob, are you on?
I know I have tried to get on a link and it says it is I couldn't but I did a few more times and I got on
Free kick from Joao Moutinho volleyed just over by Dendoncker
Should have done better, I think. That cross into the area was clever.
I will get off right now Bob
I'll listen to it on the BBC
I am off
I can get off if someone else needs to get on
Do you have any coverage at all Bob?
I'm in there now - wahay!
Thanks, boys!
Yes. Cool.
Fantastic. Glad we're all able to watch
Willy Boli down for Wolves. That would be a huge loss if he had to come off
For a moment I thought that Wolves had changed the color of their kit but now I've realized that Wolves are in their white change strip and it's Valencia in the two-tone orange.
That's a big loss if he can't continue.
Sevilla, that is.
Eh? Wolves in their Old-Gold, Valencia in White.
Good
I'm happy with radio coverage and watching a Monk
Right, Sevilla.
Thanks, Dave!
I love Monk. That filled a big need in Eric's youth. Still one of the most sympathetic portrayals of a neuroatyplical character,
PENALTY TO WOLVES OFF A SUPERB SOLO RUN ON THE BREAK. EVER BONEGA WAS WELL TACKLED. DEFINITE FOUL
I've just realized that I was on the Shakhtar v. Basel link. I've pulled my finger out now just in time to see Wolves get a penalty!
Penalty SAVED
Raul Jimenez to take....
Oh dear - terrible penalty from Raul. Easily saved.
BUGGER! A horrible penalty from Jimenez easily saved by Bono. Straight to the keeper and tame
Lovely. A penalty and Sevilla succumb to Commander Adama's power.
And Jimenez shoots straight at the keeper and at a very favorable height for the keeper. That was worth a team fine it was so shit.
Will Wolves regret that miss?
Oh - good stop by Rui Patricio.
Professor Bob is on form today!!
Interesting...that you couldn't get on the match.... when you were on the other match!
I thought it was discovered that the limit was to the match
I would have said that you wouldn't have any doubts about Raul at the penalty spot but he really froze up there. Agree with you, Steve - club fine for sure.
Yeah - I'm still not sure that we couldn't have some people on one match and some on another. Might be something to investigate at some point.
I think Wolves just may regret that miss. Wolves are playing in uncharted waters, whereas Sevilla have been here many times before.
Jimenez must score now to properly apologize for that terrible effort.
The other match is on Gala for me
I just gave it a shot for the other match
No go
Interesting.
Who's Traore trying to kid. A little slap like that felling him like an axe to his ankles. He's a big man, and plays like a big man so he should stay up without complaint.
Agreed. Wolves will need to score soon in order to exorcise that poor effort by Jimenez.
Wolves have already faced Spanish opposition in this competition defeating Espanyol 6-3 on aggregate. Facing the team that finished 4th in La Liga will be a different proposition than one that just got relegated
Decent cross there but En-Nesyri put his header well over the mark.
Thats a worrying imbalance in possession against Wolves. Sevilla will know how to grind them if they don't give up the ball.
Shakhatar goes tow up vs Basel Brush
BOOM BOOM!
Did you see that some plonker on Celtic broke protocol and went to Spain without anyone knowing. He came on as a sub against Killie
He's been shown a 'yellow card" Celtic join Aberdeen having their next two games postponed.... they were going to play each other on Saturday
Would you lot prefer an all-English semi with Wolves on Sunday or would you like to meet Sevilla?
Sounds like Shakhtar have got their hands right up inside Basel Brush this evening.
Hibs won today and are on top with a 100% record
Madness! It's that kind of reckless behavior that has us up at night worried about the opening of campus in a couple of weeks.
En-Nesyri hasn't got his shooting boots on tonight. That was a decent chance and he shanked his shot well wide.
Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was really pissed as was Celtic's manager Neil Lennon
Any fish puns MUR?
I did see that Covid protocol breach. It's enough that I don't think he deserves to play again this year. And Celtic's squad has to quarantine. It's only just. I saw Nicola Sturgeon's statement and she was livid that it had happened. No excuse.
The first minister will be fishing for a dungeon to put those morons.
just realized.... if we were in a normal world.... the new season would be starting this weekend!!!
There it is... didn't let us down MUR
DCUnited wants me to be in my seat on August 27th. I just don't trust that at all. You've reminded me to call my ticketing rep to see what my alternatives are. Infections are still on the rise in the Metro area and I don't fancy the risk to watch really terrible football.
Challenge..... players name
Boli Bolingoli
Based on the comments both Celtic and Aberdeen have two matches postponed for violating COVID 19 protocol. I agree with a hefty fine and a year ban for breaking the COVID 19 rules
Surely, they can't hold you to these tickets
Nice cut and thrust to this match now.
I bought a six match package for the RGV Toros just before everything got canceled in March. I was asked if I wanted to go to matches this season or next given that the maximum number of fans allowed would be at 25% capacity. I picked next season and the first two matches since the break then turned out to be played behind closed doors. Next home match on the 22nd
Yes, midweek games this week and their scheduled clash on the weekend are off
Celtic will have to have some making up to do with dropping points at Killie and these games being postponed
Their STRIVE FOR FIVE...DOUBLED will be tough
Just made that name right now
My brother bought a five year package for the Orlando Lions with this being the fifth year. They refused to give a refund. He was told either go to matches this season or next . He doesn't want to go to any more matches
MUR....who were given a challenge
Are they allowing crowds back in at the end of the month? That seems really unwise.
First indication is that the club does intend to hold us to our season ticket contract. The alternative that I've used in the past when I have an unavoidable conflict is to turn the ticket in for credit towards buying another ticket in the future. Effectively it means losing two ticket's value, the one I have to miss, and the one for the game I reschedule so that I can sit with somebody I want to bring along. Back at RFK, it was such big place that I never had to worry because you could freely seat hop. The Audi is a tiny stadium and it's much harder. I'm a bit fed up with DCUnited. They won't give Ben Olson a decent team to work with, and they keep making a season ticket purchase a pain.
I don't blame Bob for having restless nights. I wouldn't trust college students. Cameron County extended shelter in place and mandatory curfews till September 7th, which is Labor Day. Another order said no face to face classes in public and private k-12 schools until September 28th. Your thoughts?
Not sure what the policy is for universities/colleges
I guess, as a United fan, I want this to go into Extra Time
I think deferring to next season is probably an offer I would take.
Gov opened up schools for opening with each school having a plan
I am so happy I don't have to worry about it
It is mid August.... yet I don't care
We're supposed to shut down if we reach 30 active cases. That could easily be one dodgy house party on the first weekend the kids are back.
The clubs are greedy and given this is a pandemic should offer refunds. Steve, like you, my brother is fed up with his team and doesn't want to watch anymore matches at the stadium
The Cameron County order includes no gatherings of more than ten. If called by the police everyone gets cited and fined. All bars have been closed in this county and the neighboring county. Glad I'm living here at this time
Is that SUNY-wide Bob?
Wonder if it is the same with Kathy at SUNY Schenectady. It is a CC so there is no campus stay tho
Things in NY have really improved from the Spring. I just hope we don't bounce back up
Late Sevilla corner
At least the NYS plan is smart and based on the data. The southern states have just rolled the dice and we've seen 100,000 cases among school kids in two weeks.
It could easily go pear shaped for us up here, too, but at least there is a plan.
That's what I've heard, Dave - SUNY-wide plan.
Things are starting to improve here, but glad they're not opening up things. We were the hot spot thew past two weeks
Back to the match... any time a Spanish team can be knocked is a plus for me
A minute of stoppage time
Couldn't believe the number of students without masks/ social distancing. Texas not looking so bad
Totally agree, Dave - I'd love to see an all-English semi. Helps out the algorithm.
It's 0-0 at the half
Shakhtar two up vs Basel Brush at the half
BOOM BOOM!
I just read that Macclesfield have been relegated out of the Football League and Stevenage staying up !
The EFL won an appeal to inflict a harsher points penalty for Macca
I'm annoyed out it....I have already updated my tables hanging up on my basement door...I have already thrown away the sticker for Stevenage....I have to make up a new one
My sister got this for me years and years ago. Teams that have fallen out of the league have had stickers with names of new teams
Stevenage will the the 14th team to have a sticker!
Just sent you a pic
Right - away we go in the second half then.
Have you thrown away the real cloth ones for teams that have gone down or are you saving them?
The second half is underway from Duisburg. No changes from wither manager
Luv - I would take 9th in the Prem in a heartbeat next season.
I bet Steve would take the current table as well!!
Thanks for the pic, Dave. Love the table and Barrow starting top of the Football league where they last played in 1972
Silly challenge there from Sais - the Sevilla player was going nowhere.
No doubt - alpha order is brilliant!
Harrogate the newest team in the Football League. I think they become the 145th or 146th team in the League
Just the other day, Kathy said the basement door doesn't look right without the league hanging there
Of course, any time the boys have a friend come over or one of my friends come over.....Man Utd are suddenly in League 2!
Bob has been guilty of this.... Leeds magically were top too!!
Roman Saiss stupidly booked for a less than Pre Saiss challenge
Poor behavior from Bob!
I'm sure Simon will be glad that Stevenage will be playing in L2 instead of the Conference
Yeah, like the current table because Aardvark United have plumetted down the divisions. I don't trust those Brummies to add an A so I always fancy them for the drop too.
I don't like how some(not me) put Bournemouth ahead of Arsenal because of the AFC in front
Anybody with season tickets to watch Aardvark United
That begging for another player to be booked is the single best argument for the implimentation of sin-bins. Fifteen minutes on the naughty step for those muppets.
Who's on top in the match?
I have the radio coverage on in the background
I don't know what you're talking about? ;-)
Kathy just told me all the classes are on-line except a few labs at SCCC
That would totally annoy me if I saw that. The Cherries can naff-off completely just for the thought of that.
Sevilla have done more of the attacking, but haven't really troubled Rui Patricio
I've got pictures of you pointing at it!!!!!
LOL, Steve. They got relegated, so now Barnsley get to see the Cherries cheat at alphabet soup this coming season
LOL!
Roman Sais is on very thin ice now. One more clog and he's off for an early bath.
Wolves lacking composure in midfield and allowing Sevilla way too much possession in Wolves' half. I have a bad feeling that Sevilla could smash and grab this one.
Oof. Sais left a mark on that guy, didn't he?
LOL! The referee a sharp one to the back of the head there. Ouch!
Wolves playing like Copenhagen did yesterday. Not having a good feeling about this
I've got a sinking feeling about this one, too. Wolves have seemed a little uptight and not nearly as fluid as usual today.
Typical Ever Banega, hitting the ref in the back of the head. Did they practice that in training?
Oh - how did that one stay out. What a chance!
This might be too big an occasion for a team that is inexperienced in Europe
Cross from Suso headed over by Kunde
As I'm a social studies educator, I feel the need to let you know that Joe Biden just chose Kamala Harris as his VP nominee.
Agreed, David. They're rope-a-doping this and tiring Wolves out. Too bad that penalty was saved. A Wolves lead would make this a better match.
I'm surprised that Traore runs out of gas after 60 minutes. Those big guys need to take their chances early. Maybe during the drinks, somebody can sneak him some oxygen because he's not moving and showing for the ball as an outlet.
I would let Jesus Navas cross whenever he wants. Never saw any of his crosses go more than three inches off the ground
Aha! OK, I was hoping she would be his AG, but I can live with her as a Veep.
Thanks for the update , Bob. Had a feeling she would be chosen for VP
I think it's a smart choice. She fits his campaign well and will hopefully build some excitement among the base.
Navas has creepy blue eyes. I always worried that he'd reveal fangs to complete the creepyness.
Agreed , Steve. Adama Traore definitely needs to work on his stamina
Pedro Neto on for Joao Moutinho. Surprised to see the fist change by either side this late in the match
LOL, Steve . That may explain his lack of vision when playing at the attacking end of the pitch
At least he picked someone. The delay was getting too much. It was making Joe look indecisive.
And leaving Abrams to be a force in Congress is helpful.
Rice would make a good Secretary of State.
Shakhtar go three up vs Basle Brush. Look like all their goals were scored by Brazilians .
BOOM BOOM!
Sorry, Dave - I know that you were holding out for Tammy Duckworth. ;-)
Agreed, Steve . Definitely a good pick for Secretary of State
I never see Baaa-sel except in European competition. Are they a money-bags club?
Another reckless foul there in a dangerous area. Wolves are living dangerously now.
Yet another misplaced cross by Jesus Navas
Oh - nice hit from Bonega but Rui Patricio did well to tip it over.
Connor Coady called for a foul on Ever Benega in the D. Shouldn't be called because the challenge made after he go the shot off
Wolves really under the cosh in this period. Nuno should really freshen things up.
Rui Patricio does well to tip over the free kick from Ever Benega
Banega wins a corner off of Adama Traore off a short corner
Jota on for Adama Traore
Willy Boli heads out a long ball for a Sevilla corner
Boli heads out a cross from Banega for another Sevilla corner
Corner from Joe Jordan out for another
Im back....I hear it is still nil nil....bring on extra time so they are knackered for Sunday
OOH, get you, Mr. Commentator with your Wikipedia skills. Very fine volleyballers as parents.
Shakhtar now up by a Barber Shop Quartet vs Basle Brush.
BOOM BOOM!
This one is almost certain to go to ET
Bugger.... Sevilla take the lead!
Are they any good? Should United win?
Remember.....UNITED STINK!
He's a Swiss born Dutch international, so his parents must have played volleyball in Switzerland. Not exactly the premier place for volleyball
Balls! Sevilla has grabbed the winner right at the death. You can't say it wasn't coming.
NostraDavid!
Well, that really was deserved. Wolves has been a punching bag for three quarters of this match. Sevilla likely have to face ManYoo next round.
For once the short corner routine worked. Great cross in from Bonega and a super header into the corner by Ocampos.
Wolves are going to need a miracle here.
Lucas Ocampos scored with a header off a cross from Ever Benega off a short corner from Suso
Four minutes of stoppage time to play now. Wolves need to get the ball back up the pitch in a hurry.
Definitely a deserved Sevilla lead. United will have to play better than yesterday to defeat Sevilla
That goal came from a short corner, proving that goals can be scored off of short corners
United have the players to beat Sevilla.
Sevilla have the system to beat ManYoo.
It will come down to your lot taking their chances on the night and your big players showing up. But really, if the likes of Pogs, Bruno, Martial, and Rash can't get erect at the prospect of prevailing in a semi, they need a blue pill.
An LOB blogging quartet of stoppage time minutes for Wolves to find an equalizer
Nice one Steve. United better not need that blue pill on Sunday!
And all because, Jimenez blew his penalty.
No European footie for Wolves next season unless they can find a late equalizer
A shame about that penalty miss
Wolves can't get it up the pitch!
And there it is
United vs Sevilla
Inter vs Shak
On Sunday
Yeah - Jimenez will be the villain of the piece - this was not the moment to pick to blow a penalty like that.
Shot from Banega deflected for a corner off a tired , lazy Wolves clearance
Yes David, I can't stand a team that won't show up and play like fans. Lack of desire at this stage of the tourney is just not acceptable.
Take care boys
I hope we can all watch the semis
TTFN
Shame - Wolves just didn't show up tonight. They seemed tight all night, suffering from nerves perhaps.
It's over and Sevilla defeat Wolves 1-0 and will face United in the semis
Jimenez looks devastated. He should be.
Alright, boys - it's been great chatting with you again today. So who's up for some Champions League action tomorrow? Of course you are! See you then!
RVW with a late consolation goal for Basle Brush, who lost 4-1 to Shakhtar.
BOOM BOOM!
Waxtap 4-1 over Baaaa-sel. That's worryingly close to the final for them.
Cheers everyone . Great chatting and look forward to chatting tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the day
I'll be late because I'm having my teeth sharpened tomorrow. Maybe the second half? Cheerio
