The Europa League Continues!

The Europa League continues from Germany today, with two more Quarterfinal match-ups. It's raining here in WNY,  so I've got a temporary reprieve from the afternoon errands. I'll be watching the Wolves v. Sevilla on the CBS All Access site, while Shakhtar and Basel are also playing.

Join me for all the fun, eh?

Here we go! I'm looking forward to this. For a guy who spent a lot of time this year watching Arsenal not prepare for the obvious charging runs of Commander Adama (because you cannot stop him if he's got a head of steam) I ended up admiring how the manager has taken quietly, very good players and made a very good team with them. I've thought for a while that Jimenez could be the best Mexican player for a generation. So I'm hoping that they put a sword to Sevilla.

Afternoon, Steve - great to have you around for this one. At the end of this afternoon, we could have an all-English semi final for the Europa League, with United already having booked their ticket to the next round yesterday. Come on, you Wolves!

I need Raphael Honigstein's columns all the time and I've never seen what he looks like. He's sitting next to Ruud who truthfully looks seedy with his stubble. He needs a shave or to let it grow into a beard.

Willy Boli down for Wolves. That would be a huge loss if he had to come off

3:08 PM

For a moment I thought that Wolves had changed the color of their kit but now I've realized that Wolves are in their white change strip and it's Valencia in the two-tone orange.

Raul Jimenez to take....

Oh dear - terrible penalty from Raul. Easily saved.

3:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BUGGER! A horrible penalty from Jimenez easily saved by Bono. Straight to the keeper and tame

3:14 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Lovely. A penalty and Sevilla succumb to Commander Adama's power.

And Jimenez shoots straight at the keeper and at a very favorable height for the keeper. That was worth a team fine it was so shit.

3:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Will Wolves regret that miss?

3:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - good stop by Rui Patricio.

3:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Professor Bob is on form today!!

Interesting...that you couldn't get on the match.... when you were on the other match!
I thought it was discovered that the limit was to the match

3:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I would have said that you wouldn't have any doubts about Raul at the penalty spot but he really froze up there. Agree with you, Steve - club fine for sure.

3:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - I'm still not sure that we couldn't have some people on one match and some on another. Might be something to investigate at some point.

3:17 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I think Wolves just may regret that miss. Wolves are playing in uncharted waters, whereas Sevilla have been here many times before.

Jimenez must score now to properly apologize for that terrible effort.

3:17 PM

Who's Traore trying to kid. A little slap like that felling him like an axe to his ankles. He's a big man, and plays like a big man so he should stay up without complaint.

3:20 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed. Wolves will need to score soon in order to exorcise that poor effort by Jimenez.

3:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wolves have already faced Spanish opposition in this competition defeating Espanyol 6-3 on aggregate. Facing the team that finished 4th in La Liga will be a different proposition than one that just got relegated

3:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Decent cross there but En-Nesyri put his header well over the mark.

3:23 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Thats a worrying imbalance in possession against Wolves. Sevilla will know how to grind them if they don't give up the ball.

3:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Would you lot prefer an all-English semi with Wolves on Sunday or would you like to meet Sevilla?

Any fish puns MUR?

3:28 PM

I did see that Covid protocol breach. It's enough that I don't think he deserves to play again this year. And Celtic's squad has to quarantine. It's only just. I saw Nicola Sturgeon's statement and she was livid that it had happened. No excuse.

DCUnited wants me to be in my seat on August 27th. I just don't trust that at all. You've reminded me to call my ticketing rep to see what my alternatives are. Infections are still on the rise in the Metro area and I don't fancy the risk to watch really terrible football.

Blogger United We Stand said...

3:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Based on the comments both Celtic and Aberdeen have two matches postponed for violating COVID 19 protocol. I agree with a hefty fine and a year ban for breaking the COVID 19 rules

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Surely, they can't hold you to these tickets

3:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice cut and thrust to this match now.

3:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I bought a six match package for the RGV Toros just before everything got canceled in March. I was asked if I wanted to go to matches this season or next given that the maximum number of fans allowed would be at 25% capacity. I picked next season and the first two matches since the break then turned out to be played behind closed doors. Next home match on the 22nd

3:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Yes, midweek games this week and their scheduled clash on the weekend are off

Celtic will have to have some making up to do with dropping points at Killie and these games being postponed

Their STRIVE FOR FIVE...DOUBLED will be tough

Just made that name right now

3:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

My brother bought a five year package for the Orlando Lions with this being the fifth year. They refused to give a refund. He was told either go to matches this season or next . He doesn't want to go to any more matches

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

MUR....who were given a challenge

3:38 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Are they allowing crowds back in at the end of the month? That seems really unwise.

3:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

First indication is that the club does intend to hold us to our season ticket contract. The alternative that I've used in the past when I have an unavoidable conflict is to turn the ticket in for credit towards buying another ticket in the future. Effectively it means losing two ticket's value, the one I have to miss, and the one for the game I reschedule so that I can sit with somebody I want to bring along. Back at RFK, it was such big place that I never had to worry because you could freely seat hop. The Audi is a tiny stadium and it's much harder. I'm a bit fed up with DCUnited. They won't give Ben Olson a decent team to work with, and they keep making a season ticket purchase a pain.

3:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't blame Bob for having restless nights. I wouldn't trust college students. Cameron County extended shelter in place and mandatory curfews till September 7th, which is Labor Day. Another order said no face to face classes in public and private k-12 schools until September 28th. Your thoughts?

Not sure what the policy is for universities/colleges

3:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I guess, as a United fan, I want this to go into Extra Time

3:39 PM

I think deferring to next season is probably an offer I would take.

3:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The clubs are greedy and given this is a pandemic should offer refunds. Steve, like you, my brother is fed up with his team and doesn't want to watch anymore matches at the stadium

3:41 PM

At least the NYS plan is smart and based on the data. The southern states have just rolled the dice and we've seen 100,000 cases among school kids in two weeks.

It could easily go pear shaped for us up here, too, but at least there is a plan.

3:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's what I've heard, Dave - SUNY-wide plan.

Stevenage will the the 14th team to have a sticker!

Wolves lacking composure in midfield and allowing Sevilla way too much possession in Wolves' half. I have a bad feeling that Sevilla could smash and grab this one.

4:27 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Agreed, David. They're rope-a-doping this and tiring Wolves out. Too bad that penalty was saved. A Wolves lead would make this a better match.

I'm surprised that Traore runs out of gas after 60 minutes. Those big guys need to take their chances early. Maybe during the drinks, somebody can sneak him some oxygen because he's not moving and showing for the ball as an outlet.

4:28 PM

United have the players to beat Sevilla.

Sevilla have the system to beat ManYoo.

It will come down to your lot taking their chances on the night and your big players showing up. But really, if the likes of Pogs, Bruno, Martial, and Rash can't get erect at the prospect of prevailing in a semi, they need a blue pill.
