A Bit of the Prem and a Bit of the Cup
Morning, guys - I hope you're having a good start to your weekends whereever you are. I'm up early to catch the clash between Newcastle and West Ham. This one is crucial at both ends of the table. Newcastle obviously need points in order to keep Fulham and relegation away from their doors. West Ham are currently in fourth and trying to hang on to the dream of Champions League football for next season. Later on today, we've got the FA Cup semi-final between Man City and Chelsea at 12:30pm. Join me for all the action, eh?

Morning Bob
I am here... already showered and shaved.... and ready for the early morning kick off. All the EL matches have been moved from the 3 o'clock kick off time in respect of Prince Phillip
Most are kicking off now
Morning, Dave - great to have you on board this morning. West Ham will scale the dizzy heights of third should they win, while a victory for Newcastle would pull Steve Bruce’s side nine points clear of the drop zone.
I have 5Live going on my phone for updates...problem is...goals will happen on the radio before the TV.... NBC delays it... probably for muting the bad language
The teams out on the pitch now:
Newcastle United: Dubravka, Clark, Fernandez, Dummett, Ritchie, Longstaff, Shelvey, Murphy, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton.
Subs: Gillespie, Carroll, Gayle, Wilson, Lewis, Hendrick, Krafth, Manquillo, Willock.
West Ham: Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Diop, Johnson, Noble, Soucek, Fornals, Lingard, Bowen.
Subs: Martin, Trott, Balbuena, Yarmolenko, Benrahma, Lanzini, Alves, Fredericks, Coventry.
Surprised our resident Hammer has not pipped in at all... maybe he doesn't want to jinx it
The preliminaries are over and we're set to go at SJP. I'm hoping that Newcastle can pull out a result.
We are off
Which United will win?
I don't want Ncastle to go down but I'd like to see West Ham keep Liverpool out of the top four
I'm not convinced that Johnno even watches the football these days.
The Gallowgate End is hidden in the shadows
I hope he does keep at least one eye on it
There was an interesting note in the commentary for yesterday's match. Arlo White mentioned that, if Chelsea win the Champions League and Arsenal win the Europa League and both end up outside the top four places in the Prem, the fourth place club (perhaps WHU) would not qualify for the CL, because England can't send more than five clubs to the CL.
I know that he watched the matches against Leeds, but I think that was merely so that he could give me the business on Facebook about the Leeds losses. Grrr!
Crazy how Messi Lingard has resurrected his career at the Hammers!! Back in the England fold as well
I heard that too....I am hoping that it would be Liverpool that misses out!
As you said, West Ham would move up to third...it could be Leicester be the one in trouble
Peter Drury mentioned the stat that makes me dislike David Moyes' West Ham most - they've had less possession than their opponents in 23 of their 30 matches in the Prem this season. I hate that.
Goood for him
Don't like Leicester much either. I'd prefer the two Manc clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea in the top four. I know that they're the big clubs but they actually come out and try to play on the front foot.
I hope Kane is okay after limping of in injury time yesterday!
I want him available for next week's Cup Final and more importantly....the Euros
St. Max is down early on. Brucie not happy about it.
No way I want Liverpool there
Yeah - I do, too. I'd be happier if they played Bale up front for the rest of the season and gave HK a rest. Spurs aren't going to win anything, after all.
Of course, I would love Chelsea and Liverpool to miss out
St Max is down again! Just head clash this time
I know this is crazy talk but there is an outside chance that Leeds could finish 7th. If we can get six points from the next two matches against Liverpool, your lot and Spurs, then the run-in gets a lot easier with matches against the likes of Brighton, Burnley and West Brom.
I don't think either Leicester or West Ham will represent England well in the CL.
Some fans are allowed to be watching the World Snooker championships
Murphy with a shot saved... and bobbled a bit by flappy
Hammers with a header on target...easy save
West Ham have done nowt in this match - how are they supposed to do well against the likes of Juventus, Bayern, PSG and Real Madrid?
As I said yesterday, we had problem with our dishwasher for weeks. We went to Lowe's and they are of course expensive and then there is installation and haul away fees. I called my old neighbor for the phone number of the guy who bought our house on Via Lino. I was going to ask he if could put it in. I left a message with him while in Lowes. We left Lowes not being able to get anything for weeks!
He called me back later on in the day. He said he could do and then asked if we had a machine yet. I said not yet. He said he had brand new one in his garage.
He was going to put it in tomorrow but called me yesterday afternoon saying he could it immediate. He installed it yesterday for less money than for just the machine available at Lowes!!
I'll take them in the CL
In the last three games they have scored three goals really quickly! Today is not a norm!
They ran ahead of Arsenal 3-0 but drew, ran 3-0 ahead against Wolves and won 3-2 as they did exactly the same against Leicester
They usually do attack
Wow - that's great news. Good to have friends like that around. I'm of course absolutely useless with that sort of thing. Kate is much handier than I am, as her dad taught her a lot growing up.
If you need a ten-letter synonym for "toothpaste" for your crossword or a good jazz playlist, I'm your man. But if you need something fixed, I'm useless.
I find City to be more boring than West Ham
All they do is possess
They're like Leicester - they've got a lot of dynamism up front now with Antonio, Fournals and Lingard, so they can break quickly and score. But they don't try to dominate matches. The better sides in Europe know how to handle that approach.
I am pretty good with doing stuff around the house
Okay....when is it disc or disk ?
Again...I hate City dominating..... some many times...that's all they do
Citeh are more boring than West Ham - I hate them. But they have a record of getting into the latter stages of the CL. I don't think that WH would even qualify for the group stage.
I agree with you about West Ham not doing much today but that has not been the case for the last month
I think they could
I thought you were the one that could help with crosswords and the English language
Answer my question
Speaking of English language.... did you ever see the The Story of English on PBS from the mid 80s?
I am in the process of watching them on Youtube with my buddies and discussing each episode. Each episode is in 8 min segments
I was excited one of them was at Portchester Castle....loved that place
NEWCASTLE TAKE THE LEAD
A big run by St Max....an own goal!
GOAL! St. Max opens the scoring for Newcastle with a bit of help from the WHU defense.
And Craig Dawson has been sent off!
Dawson also gets a second yellow and is off!
Sorry, I didn't see your question until now.
"Disk" is the preferred spelling in the U.S. "Disc" is the preferred spelling in Britain.
That sequence has completely turned this match on its head now!
Is that the only difference. I am working on a US crossword and disc is used as an answer. CD's second part
It has probably changed both club's season!!
I think Brucie has been harshly treated by the Toon faithful
There may an exception when it comes to technological terms.
He does need to have his teams attack more.
Flappy at it again... TWO NIL!!!
Bloody hell - Joelinton has added a second goal for Newcastle!
Crazy goalkeeping!!
Flappy by name; Flappy by nature. A really bad moment for the Polish keeper.
Moyesey with a death glare on the sideline now.
Newcastle now up to 15th with 35 points. This would probably be enough for them to stay up.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are now a point back on WHU with a match in hand.
as long as Liverpool miss out
Pompey behind at MK Dons
Cambridge 0-0 at Newport but that puts them top as Cheltenham lost last night
Your lot need to do a number on Pool on Monday
Will you be working for that one? I will miss the second half as I am picking up Kath
Half-time arrives and Brucie and co. will be delighted to go in 2-0 to the good. Not sure where West Ham go from here in this match.
Half time at SJP... great news for the hosts
Yeah - I have to be at work and will miss much of the second half for my class. Hoping that we can do the business. I'm hopeful.
We are off for the second half
We're back on for the second half.
Will you be around for the Semi?
I will but not for the late match....snorefest
I'm surprised (or maybe not surprised) that Moyes hasn't made any changes at half time. They have to roll the dice. I loved that Marcelo made an immediate change when Liam Cooper was sent off last weekend.
I'm off to help Kate with breakfast prep.
Toon has turned negative for no reason
They have the extra man....attack
West Ham are still on top even being a man down
This is bad by Bruce and the Toon!
Back for a tick while the English muffins are going. West Ham haven't managed to do anything.
Newcastle break....useless cross!! LOST ART
They have been well on top... with ten men
WEST HAM HAVE SCORED!!!
Diop scores at the right end this time
Might be offside
GOAL! Diop fires West Ham back into this match with a great header.
VAR check on it now.
That should count.... it does
this is why fans don't like Bruce....there is no reason to play the way they played in the second half
West Ham..... Arsenal 3-3, Wolves 3-2, Leicester 3-2.... could it be another?
VAR is going to look for an earlier handball...what is his arm doing up there... ref going to screen
I think it will be given
the commentators don't agree with me .... it is a pen!!
It is a pen
How can they say it isn't a pen.... the arm is there and the ball hits it
I don't get why they are complaining
It has been given! I don't like those. They seem unintentional to me.
Newcastle deserve this after their second half performance
Newcastle are paying for not trying to continue to play in the second half. They dropped off and let WHU back into the match.
Messi Lingard..... Desmond
Lindy scores! And West Ham have turned this around!
Great pen... powered off the inside post
West Ham will go for the winner
0-2 down... a man down... could they win it
As for Newcastle..... ridiculous performance!
Totally agree with you, mate.
Toon break..... off the line!!!
Do you think it was a pen?
GOAL.... TOON RETAKE THE LEAD!!!!!!
Willock with a great header
Now Bruce will start being negative again!
GOAL! Joe Willock has fired Newcastle back into the lead.
These early matches have been crackers recently!
West Ham are in another 3-2 er.... possibly 3-3
Messi Lingard...hopefully it is only cramp
Definitely - Brucie will revert back to "match management" mode again.
Messi still down.... hope it is not a hammy
He is limping
He looks hurt
Into the last two minutes plus a lot of added time
Bruce is laughing about the added time.... 8 minutes
This is getting ridiculous !!!
Toon taking their time taking a throw in... ref looks as his watch....that will 8.5 minutes!
Blow up..... Shad really wants a walk!!
Don't know where they found that eight minutes. Crazy!
Why doesn't anyone else but me complain about the ridiculous clock crap!
Get up Richie....you're not hurt!!
Hang in there, Shadow!
Now it is going to be tedious corner flag crap
It will just cause more fouls. More rolling around hurt
I think corner flagging should be illegal
I HATE THIS CRAP
Come on, Magpies - you can't just corner flag it for eight minutes!
Still FOUR more minutes to go
Oh - that cross could have gone anywhere.
Struth...that cross was very dangerous
Hammers needed to get some players in the box!!
Corner
More damn time wasting
Now Carroll about to come on...that will add more time.... why do managers do this!! They know it adds more time!
Best news of the day - Sheffield Wednesday look like they're headed for L1.
This would move Newcastle 9 points clear of the drop and above Brighton and Burnley
Burnley are now the closest to Fulham.... seven points clear
Andy Carroll on to get into the mix in the box.
Useless free kick into the box.... didn't beat first man!
Fulham are just about doomed. They'll need to win at the Emirates tomorrow, for sure.
Great cross field ball by Carroll....I like the run by Wilson too
Dreary wanted him to corner flag it
That is it!!
Toon win 3-2!
I am off for walkies
I'll be back for the semi...hope to have some company
TTFN
Newcastle hang on for three precious points. That should be enough for them to stay up now.
Cheerio, Dave - enjoy your walk. I'll look forward to watching the Cup semi with you.
I have finished watching Prince Phillip's funeral and now on to the first semi final
I know it won't be that exciting...but I am sure on the London Blue's side and not the Manc
News from the Championship, Norwich didn't kick off yet but have been promoted back to the Premier League with Swansea and Brentford both dropping points
The teams for the match under the Arch
Chelsea: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Kante, Chilwell, Ziyech, Werner, Mount.
Subs: Caballero, Alonso, Emerson, Zouma, Gilmour, Havertz, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Giroud.
Manchester City: Steffen, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Mendy, Rodrigo, Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Torres, Sterling, Jesus.
Subs: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Ake, Gundogan, Zinchenko, Bernardo, Mahrez, Foden.
Plus' coverage doesn't start until 12:15
No reason that ESPN doesn't put this on the telly!
At least we don't have to listen to TT for a long time!
Hiya, guys - I'm back to follow the first FA Cup semi-final this afternoon. It's a big one between City and Chelsea with a lot riding on it in the PPP.
I have no time whatsoever for Old Phil's funeral. As Benjamin Franklin once put it, royalty is "the European disease." We put that nonsense behind us in 1776.
This is only the second time Chelsea have faced Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals. City won the first meeting, back in 2013, Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero giving Roberto Mancini’s side a two-goal lead, Demba Ba pulling one back for Rafa Benitez’s men, City in the end hanging on. City went on to lose to Wigan in the final, but let’s not reopen old wounds.
Bah humbug
I agree with you - this one should be on the telly, not streaming.
Remember, I shook the hands of Charles...haven't washed it since
LOL! I'll be celebrating the 4th of July as usual, mate.
We are off for the coverage
Isn't there supposed to be a few fans or is that tomorrow
Geez.....TT
Me too
Off with their heads!
Yikes - it's the Adrian and Double T team again. Shameful. I can't believe these twits have the next World Cup.
TT already annoying me
ESPN has the next World Cup? They used to do a great job and then FOX got it.... They did a great job too
TT just can't shut up
I just wish they remembered that we are here to watch the match....we don't need all the chatter
A lot of squad rotation going on today. Chelsea make three changes from the Porto match and City make eight changes from the Dortmund match in mid-week.
About the fans, I think it is the Final next week with 2000 fans
Totally agree.
That'll be an important occasion. Are we supposed to have fans in the stadium for the Euros.
Teams in the tunnel at Wembley now.
There are some fans at tomorrow's semi
Chelsea wearing blue....will City do it as well
I hate all this prioritizing trophies....got out and try to win all with your best
Looks City are wearing blue too
I like that blue is playing blue and there is no need to change anything
Tuchel and Pep holding hands as they come out of the tunnel
I am going to see how close is 5Live is to the screen. I want to mute these two!
Won't be able to....5Live is well ahead. Their minute silence finished as Plus started
SHOW IT LIVE!!!
I HATE IT!
Off we go
Already to slow for me
already bored
I can't stand that almost every club things the best thing to do is just keep possession of the ball and make meaningless passes
Of course, you don't like teams that don't care about possession
Game starts....Bob buggers off
Come on teams... DO SOMETHING!!
The ball has not been in either box!
Chelsea get the ball in the net.... but a late flag goes up!!
Just offside
Since when does a goalkeeper so tired that they need a break
TT...stop explaining the sport to me
Bloody hell.... Chelsea have a corner.... short one...10 seconds later.... back to Kepa.... RIDICULOUS
James with a chance to cross....lost art
I'm in the middle of making lunch. Good start from Chelsea. Of course, I hate both sides but I'd prefer to see Chelsea in the final.
So, City lose today, City lose next weekend, City lose to PSG AND United beat Burnley and Leeds...gap is 5
City to lose midweek of course at Villa Park
A quadruple down to nowt!!
I'm back with a sandwich and some chips. Blame the poor timing on my fair Kate who was yacking on the phone with her mum when we should have been eating lunch BEFORE the match!
Poor form Kate
I suspect that they'll end up with a league and League Cup double. Might be disappointed by only that.
Chelsea get the ball in the box... just close eyes and shoot!
Ziyech had a chance to cross there - of course, he didn't find a teammate.
No one is heavy legged....they're just boring
The sad thing, EVERYONE in the media go gaga over them
It looked like Fernandinho trod on Mason Mount there. No action from the ref.
Almost a good run by Mount
Chelsea at least trying
I really hope Jose disappoints all the Spurs fans and actually win a trophy
Chilwell.... useless effort at the back post....BUGGER
Eight of these City players didn't play in mid-week; why would they be heavy legged?
TT just starts talking as well as answering Jon's questions....JUST WATCH THE ACTION
Kate just asked - why is this coverage so bad? Good question!
Chilwell....another atrocious cross!
I know it was deflected but.... BEAT THE MAN
Tell her it is driving me nuts
It used to be a common fear among American broadcasters that American fans who tune out if there wasn't at least one American voice on the coverage. I don't think that's a reasonable fear now, after years of NBC coverage. Double T should only be used for MLS and US National Team matches.
Pep Love Fest.... again.... he always has the biggest squad
How would he do at Bradford?
I wish
Free kick chance now for Chelsea. Reece James swings it in and it's cleared.
He just talks as he knows everything about the sport and we know nothing(Im not Manuel)
City have absolutely NOTHING in 25 minutes
Why has Timo Werner been so useful for Chelsea this season? He was scoring for fun in the Bundesliga last season!
City have done less than nothing - absolutely ridiculous.
I'd love to see Pep have to manage a Championship level club.
But they're brilliant !!
They bore me to tears
Sometimes, United want to emulate them...I HATE THAT TOO
Typical Premier League-style game, lots of passing backwards and sideways and no excitement. Maybe it's the lack of fans that has caused this.
Rob, Finchley

It's like watching a pre-season friendly! FA Cup semi-final, where's the passion? This new brand of football is a bore. Yawn!
Finally people posting the truth
James with an effort... wide
James in the book
Why wasn't the other one a yellow
Fernandino gets away with a lot of fouling
Sorry, I fell asleep temporarily. Must whip out the smelling salts. This is brutal.
Flick is leaving Bayern.... I think Pep should go back there... or Klopp
If City had another manager, would you like them better?
if they did more than just passing!
I never really hated them.... they were never a big rival
It was always Liverpool
This is an FA CUP SEMI FINAL....they are playing like it is a preseason match in NY
KDB taking an age to cue up a corner now - for goodness sake!
It does have the feel of a pre-season invitational.
