The Sunday Rest
We had all of the good matches yesterday, so today we've just got the rest. I had a bit of a lie in this morning and was in and out of the Newcastle v. Spurs match during my brekkies and Sunday shower. I'll likely do some grading during the next rubbishy one between Villa and Fulham, but I'll be around for United v. Brighton later on. If you're watching, drop by for an afternoon snack, eh?
250 Comments:
Good morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. The matches have actually been fairly entertaining. Saints came from two down to defeat Burnley 3-2 then Toon tied it up late as it finished Desmond vs the Spuds
Villa vs Cottagers underway from Villa Park. The Cottagers will move out of the drop zone , ahead of the Toon, with a win, which would suit Bob as Villa would stay behind Leeds in the standings
Hiya, David - I hope everything went well for you and Elizabeth tomorrow. I'm settling in to enjoy the only decent match of the day - United v. Brighton.
It was looking like a great day for Fulham for a while. But then it didn't. First, Newcastle pulled out a late equalizer and then Villa turned it around late on. It all means that Fulham have dropped another point to Newcastle in their quest for survival. Now there is a four point gap.
Villa win 3-1 thanks to those late goals that occurred after the substitutions. The Cottagers now three points behind the Toon while Villa move up to ninth , ahead of Bob's ad Steve's teams, which will not please them
I'm not that fussed by Villa leapfrogging us. 11th is just fine for us this season. I'm really looking forward to the next four matches against the big boys. That should be fun.
Congratulations on the Yorkie Derby victory yesterday. You must be delighted and the Evil Blades another step closer to clinching relegation
Hey Boys
I might be in and out for this one. I'll be watching but in the kitchen for quite a while
News out of Old Trafford, Martial is probably out for the rest of the season
Thanks, David - it wasn't that pretty a win but a win is a win against the Blades.
Good Afternoon, Dave. I will be around for the first half then Elizabeth and I will be leaving at the half for the second dose of the vaccine.
The line-ups for today's match:
Manchester United (4-2-3-1) Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Pogba; Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford; Cavani.
Substitutes: de Gea, Williams, Tuanzebe, James, Matic, van de Beek, McTominay, Amad.
Brighton (3-4-1-2) Sanchez; White, Dunk, Veltman; Gross, Lallana, Bissouma, Moder; Trossard; Maupay, Welbeck.
Substitutes: Steele, Karbownik, Mac Allister, Alzate, Propper, Caicedo, Jahanbakhsh, Izquierdo, Zeqiri.
Referee Mike Dean.
Your thoughts, gents?
Of course, I am not that confident about today's match!
They were better than us at the Amex and you know how we play at home
Also, Leeds is above forty points which is fantastic. I guess the next goal is to try and reach fifty points
Manchester United (4-2-3-1) Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Pogba; Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford; Cavani.
Substitutes: de Gea, Williams, Tuanzebe, James, Matic, van de Beek, McTominay, Amad.
Brighton (3-4-1-2) Sanchez; White, Dunk, Veltman; Gross, Lallana, Bissouma, Moder; Trossard; Maupay, Welbeck.
Substitutes: Steele, Karbownik, Mac Allister, Alzate, Propper, Caicedo, Jahanbakhsh, Izquierdo, Zeqiri.
Beat me to it
Congrats on the Vax
I'm trying to be positive and thinking that United will win. The loss of the karate chopper not a huge loss for United. Looks like a decent lineup.
I get my first dose on April 17th or possibly earlier if Matt gets permission through Stewarts
Thanks, Dave. We're delighted.
That's soon, Dave. Glad you're getting vaccinated.
I thought the match was supposed to start at 2:15, but it's starting at 2:30. Sorry to say I will only be around for the first half hour of the match
Showing highlight of the Amex match.... United scoring AFTER the first final whistle!
Are you able to listen to the match on your phone during your travel? It is on 5Live
Seagulls come out first followed by the Red Devils at Old Trafford....I've been there
Hiya, chaps - I'm back from doing some last minute errands and looking forward to this one. Come on, United!
So NBC go on commercial
I should be able to listen while I'm driving. That's a great idea
There have only been five league matches at OT with fans since I was there
Norwich 4-0, Burnley 0-2, Wolves 0-0, Watford 3-0 and City 2-0
Can't complain about NBC Sports this weekend - every match on the channel and no Peacock nonsense. We're underway!
We are off
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
They're off from OT! The Dean of officials is in charge and with it being Easter he should be card happy.
COME ON MAN UNITED!
Oh - great early ball there but Rash couldn't gather it.
Very true....the early one today was on the Cock....both games tomorrow are as well
But as you say, can't complain
United on the front foot right from the off, just as you would want.
Interesting stat, Dave. The last time both teams scored in a Prem match with fans at OT was when you were in attendance.
United on the front foot but I do wish Shaw got it over but went backwards
Brighton are good team really
Very true....of course, I wasn't happy when the Magpies took the lead right in front of me!
The Seagulls have never won a match at OT. Long may that continue
If anyone was really wanting to watch Southampton at 7am on Easter Sunday, they deserve the Cock!
I think United's El opponents are owned by the same family that owns the Hornets. We need to stuff them
Bruno with a shot...well over
Shot from Bruno well over off nice one touch passing
I just got finished with... stuff. Including laying in 5 beers by an Indiana outfit called Three Floyds. We used to have them here in the Commonwealth, but a combination of how obnoxious our alcohol laws are for producers, and the Floyds disappearing up their own arses about distribution outside a range of 100 miles because of quality control issues, we've not had access here for 20 years. But the pandemic has made the Floyds reconsider and just as soon as a store here announce that they have it, it's sold out.
Shaw makes a good run.... why did he cut back
Welcome Steve
I watched the early match because I woke up around kickoff and was curious to see how the match would turn out. It was a lot more entertaining than I expected. To be honest I was expecting a dull match
Good afternoon, Steve. Glad you are getting to enjoy some quality ale.
Welcome, Steve. Sounds like you've been using your day well. My beer habit recently has been buying 12 pack variety boxes from local breweries so that I've always got a porter, pale ale, wheat beer and so on around. I've got a spring seasonal box from Southern Tier going right now.
What about a new law that when the medical team come on, an independent medic is sent on too, and if it's nothing, they tell the ref to caution the faking player? I'm tired of the game being interrupted like this.
Hiya all of you.
Bruno tries to play in Cavnani but he was offside
United are going forward when they can so far
A win would be big here. An 11 point gap would open up to fifth
oooh.... Greenwood hits the post!
Oh - great volley by Greenwood - I think that was off the keeper and the post.
I'm not sure if this was mentioned yesterday, but the Baggies became the first team to score eight Prem goals in a season against Chelsea. I don't think any of us would have expected the Baggies of all tams to set that bizarre record.
That sounds like a great idea, Steve. I'd like to see that implemented.
Matt just pointed out something.....United's shirts look extra red today for some reason
Did all my food shopping while the righteous and pious were in church. The aisles today were empty at 11am.
I like that law, Steve. It will hopefully curb the time wasting and poor sportsmanship
That is crazy!
3-3 and 2-5....they should have won the first game!
That's a really interesting stat. I remember well that 3-3 draw back in the fall. Both extraordinary matches.
Matt's onto something there.
Arlo yapping on about Shaw....just like he did yesterday with TAA
Just commentate
That's a good tactic, Steve. Some of the stores in this area are closed today and some are not
Worse new rule.... Defenders being able to touch the ball inside the area from a goal kick
BLOODY PEP
Agreed. The side bars can be done pre or post match
So what's your thinking about the relegation race after today's results. Despite their win, I think WBA and Sheffield Utd are down. It's between Newcastle and Fulham for the other slot - I can't see Brighton, Burnley or Soton getting dragged into it. I think the bottom three right now will go down.
My other suggestion is if a team takes the ball to the corner flag to waste time, give the other team an indirect free kick.
Sorry, chaps - your old pal Danny Welbeck scores. Of course it would be him.
Bloody hell.... Welbeck gives the Seagulls the lead
Great save by Henderson
United stink at crosses
Our central defenders suck!!
BUGGER! WELLIE GIVES THE SEAGULLS THE LEAD ON HIS RETURN TO OT! hEADER OFF THE CROSS FROM GROSS SAVED BY DEAN HENDERSON THEN WELLIE HEADS IN HIS OWN REBOUND
Obi-wan should do penance for letting Welbeck head that one in. Just 5 seconds before he was covered and then WHAAA?
Clever!! That's what you're supposed to do!!!!
You're not supposed to just stand there!
Rash tries too much AGAIN
I'd be in favor of that one, too. I'm in favor of more indirect free kicks. I hate the way that defenders get away with obstruction when they "shepherd the ball out" for a goal kick.
Corner for United....USELESS delivery.... Dixon!
I agree, Bob. The Baggies and Evil Blades are pretty much down. The last spot is between the Toon and Cottagers. The loss today really hurts the Cottagers. It appears that the Cottagers will have to defeat the Toon on the final day of the season to have any chance of staying up
Here he goes again talking about TAA
RASHFORD SUCKS
I would favor indirect free kicks too. Instead of allowing goal kicks not to leave the box I would favor keeping the old goal kick rule, but award an indirect free kick if the goal kick fails to leave the box,.
As for the relegation race, please let it be Burnley that gets mired and dragged down. They add nothing, top to bottom of their squad. Mee might temp some other team, but the rest, Scotland or the Championship.
TAA is so great that he might not make the squad for the Euros , Arlo
More pathetic defending by United..... and free kick or corner should always be put in the mixer against United
Almost more calamity
Dean Henderson tips over a header that should have been a slam Dunk for Lewis off a free kick
I don't know how Marcus gets into the England squad. I appreciate his charity work and I'm sure that he's a lovely lad and visits his grannies on Sundays, but he just doesn't produce enough.
Too much passing going nowhere
Based on what Steve said, the defending by Obi WAN off the cross from Christian was Gross incompetence. He should be punished by Darth Vader
Well, the combo of Gabriel and Holding who replaced Luiz, against them, TAA's going to always look pretty good.
Totally agree with you....but the all the "smart" people think he's brilliant
I think he looks disinterested most matches
I would love for Burnley to get dragged into it and for Fulham, who I don't mind at all apart from Bad Boy Mitrovic, to survive. I quite like Scotty Parker, apart from his ridiculous outfits.
I think it goes back to our days at Lakenheath when the players with the top clubs made the squad even if they were out of form . Southgate has been better about that, but it needs to be the best players, not the players with the best clubs that make the squad
United have gone back the damn slow play!!
HATE IT!
But in the Euros squad, I think he's a likely choice.
Dixon yapping on about something
WE DON'T NEED ALL THESE DEEP TACTIC TALK!
What was that from Pogba....there was not a red shirt in sight!!!
Yeah Bob, always had a soft spot for Fulham, not least because they were really good about hiring Yanks, McBride, Moore, Johnson, and Dempsey. I appreciated that.
Agreed, Bob. I would love to see the Cottagers survive. Sadly, I think Burnley is just a win from safety. If the Cottagers are to survive they can't have late match collapses as they did today. Also, they draw too many matches. Those draws need to be turned into wins. Still in with a chance
I think ObiWan should go to the Euros when we are playing a team with a dangerous winger. He marks them out of the game
In games where we need to be more attacking, start someone else
Adjust
Dixon might have a point of view on French vintages, but his experience operating the deathly offside trap of the Graham years is sum and total of his expertise.
Bruno can't find Greenwood....it was a simply pass buddy!
More patheticness by United
Another corner to Brighton...uh oh
I think England managers get used to having certain characters around, regardless of what they actually do for the side. In the end, though, when it comes down to it, Kane is first man on the team sheet. He'll likely play up alone, so it's then a matter of who comes on as a second half sub if we need one. For me, that's DCL, regardless of my love for Patrick Bamford.
Henderson drops the cross!!!
United survive!
we need a lucky pen before half time... come on United
OOOF, Henderson dropped or patted that down dangerously.
ANOTHER PISS POOR PASS by Bruno!!!
Brighton so lucky to play out there!! Makes no sense to me that you pass to the corner and you pin yourself in the corner
Fred passes to a blue shirt too
Southgate seems fixated on having Kyle Walker in the squad. There's also Reese James and Obi Wan in better form. I don't think that leaves room for TAA because that would be an overload of fullbacks.
SPEED IT UP UNITED
It's time for Elizabeth and I to leave for our vaccine . Great chatting . Enjoy the rest f the day.
CHEERS!
So bad by Lindeloff!!
United going no where!!!
Take care David
Shaw clueless ...just ran into two players
Brighton's defense look really compressed and narrow to me. I'm surprised that United haven't tried to get round the side of them with overlapping runs from Shaw and Obi-Wan.
All this crap about not being able to break down the defenders.... get the ball in the box!!
Cavani can't find Rash
Somewhat difficult ball there from Cavani to Rash but you would want him to be able to control that.
That would mean putting in a decent cross...modern day....Bloody Pep
What was Pogba thinking there
Sliced lob....to a blue shirt
Cheerio, David - well done getting that jab.
United's passing....GEEZ
Like Arsenal yesterday
AFTV were going nuts about their passing
Arlo is talking rubbish....United just suck
Useless cross by ObiWan
Wasted chip in from Pogba....that would never work
I'm not sure what it is, but I find Brighton a really irritating side to watch.
Almost EVERY game.....United bore me
I think they are ok
What was that effort from Pogba?!
Rash goes dribbling into ten defenders...ball comes out to Pogba.... at least an extra goal wide of the goal
Are United in for Haaland?
There is no way he will come to United
But are you in talks with him?
Haaland is going to surprise everyone and sign a 3 year deal for Leeds.
Again....the guys on the mics these days just think they have to talk the whole game
JUST COMMENTATE
Gross in the book for pulling back Fred....why would you do that... Fred would lose the ball within two touches
Obiwan can't get a decent cross over...of course. Then Greenwood tries too much again
He better not go to City.... after BLOOODY Pep says they can't afford a striker
LOL! He's never coming to Leeds and there is no way we could afford his wages.
I'd love to see the kid in the Premier League but I don't want him at City. They don't need him. They've shown this year that they can win the league without a striker. I'd like to see him either at United or Arsenal.
He wouldn't fit into the Liverpool scheme and Chelsea are the graveyard of strikers.
His agent Raiola and his dad are talking to everyone
Brighton with another chance
They have been more dangerous than United
If you can't afford Haaland's wages, a club that axed its mascot as a cost cutting scheme sure can't.
Well, he's not going to stay at Dortmund now that they're unlikely to have the CL next season. He'll want that.
Brighton with another chance...deflected wide
There is always talk about how in debt the two Spanish sides are but they will get him
OR.... he will go to Bayern
I still think he'll do the boring thing and sign for a Spanish behemoth because there's no financial laws that appear to apply to them.
United need a goal...showing no urgency at the end of the half
Bloody Useless
That's the half-time whistle. That was all fairly irritating. I'm hoping for better from United in the second half.
Sensational? Someone get Arlo a dictionary.
Everything for Arlo is sensational
Didn't even notice that the goal came from a simple pass misplayed by Pogba
Bob, I am going to have to ask you again... what is the name of the fish and chip, sausage roll, Cornish pasty shop?
Just found it.... Parkers
Don't know why they are making such a thing about Henderson
He did drop that one but he made a brilliant save before the goal and also made another one from a corner
Not his fault we are behind
Bloody media
Teams out for the second half
Arlo is still going on about Henderson
So what that he is out earlier!
We are off
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
Useless run by Rash...going no where!
Fred can't find the pass
DO THEY PRACTICE PASSING!!
It's got to get better. Only Arlo, who is contractually obligated to think this way, thinks that that first half was sensational.
Shaw can't find anyone...the striker needs to dart in front fo the defender there!
Speed it up United!!
The ball isn't moving.... the players aren't moving
It is not Brighton doing well.. it's United doing nothing
Speed kills....United going 5mph
Useless again by Pogba
Dan James warming up right now. You'd be starting at Elland Road, Dan (hint, hint).
United reached the summit of the league in January...since then....they have been rubbish!!
We will struggle against Grenada!!
United have to play away first....I'd prefer it the other way. We tend to blow it at home and correct it away
If we blow it at home.... we won't be able to correct it
Pogba almost trips over the ball!!
First shot on target? Straight down the keeper's throat
Rash tries a pop from distance. Matty Ryan behind it all the way.
Start commentating Arlo
Maguire....what the hell was that!!!!!!
United players look disinterested!
United BORE ME!!
Brighton's game plan? So over hyped!!
United just stink
Good mazy run by Rash there before Ben White puts a toe in. Corner.
Pogba called for high kick....just go and head it!!
Brighton pass the ball back to their keeper with the ball rolling next to the line and lumps it forward.....what is the point!!!!!
It doesn't take a genius to devise this plan for Brighton - just stick ten men behind the ball and try to spring the quick guys up front. I could be a Premier League manager!
This performance would be booed if there were 76,000 people there!
ONE shot on target....from distance!!
CREATED NOTHING
Modern day corner doesn't beat the first man
His next cross....same result
GO FORWARD!!!!!!
ObiWan's cross....doesn't beat the first man!
Atrocious....do they practice crosses?
Dixon says about Obiwan's cross. He needs to say the same about Bruno's two crosses
That is correct as well. Brighton don't have to do much
There is no movement
I want the bloke from Leeds in charge at Old Trafford
Surely he will come
Corner to United...chance gone then
Good save by Sanchez there from Bruno. United just starting to threaten. But the set pieces have got to get better.
I called it
where are the days of Vidic, Bruce, Pally and co
Threaten?
Not really
FINALLY!!
attacked with pace.... Rashford equalizes!
Yes! Rashford is put through by Bruno and slots home neatly.
1-1!
What did I say? The chances were coming and Brighton were just trying to hold on.
Now go and score again!!
This side will just concede
Now go on and win it!
I don't think Brighton have that kind of ambition. United should go on and win this one now.
Only one goal for Greenwood this season? Not nearly good enough. Gjanni Alioski has three, for goodness sake.
They should but I'm no confident
We equalized against Palace....fell behind again
Equalized vs Blades...fell behind again
United trying to be too cute with the passes...it was fast tho
Obiwan gets a decent cross in....no one attacking it
I wish we still had Ben White at Leeds. He was a big loss this summer.
Fred with a shot deflected over the bar
Fred tries one, it's deflected and could easily have looped up over Sanchez and in. Out for a corner.
United are TOOTHLESS from corners!!!
