FA Cup Quarterfinal Saturday
Morning, chaps! It's an unusual day in the footer world with a mere three fixtures on offer. It starts in a few moments with the Cup clash between Bournemouth v. Soton. Then there is a long gap in the day for the usual untelevised league matches at 10am and noon. At 1:30pm, we've got the match of the day, with Everton v. Citeh meeting in the Cup. Finally at 4pm, there is the sole Premier League match-up on Peacock - a relegation dogfight between Brighton and Newcastle. I'll likely only be around for that match at Goodison at 1:30 but I thought I'd post this early so that any of you can chip in on other matches. Enjoy the day!

Sad news this morning of the death of Leeds legend Peter Lorimer at the age of 74. He had been ill for some time so this was expected. He was my favorite member of the Revie team. He had dynamite in his boots.
The Saints have been denied an o.g. early on, Walker-Peters called offside in a marginal VAR review.
Very sad about Lorimer
It has been a tough year for Bob's side of the 70s
I am doing some stuff around the house. I'll probably listen to the matches but that's about it
Have a good day
Hiya, Dave - hope the errands are fun today.
Soton have been the dominant side today and they've reaped the rewards finally, with a goal from Djenepo.
Coming up on half-time now.
Nathan Redmond has added a second goal at the stroke of half time and Soton are cruising this one.
The Saints have run out 0-3 winners today in the South Coast Derby match and are into the semi-finals of the Cup. None of us picked them to reach the final.
The Championship mid-day matches have ended. At the top of the table, Norwich have drawn 1-1 with Blackburn, Brentford have drawn 1-1 with Forest, Watford have beaten Brum 3-0, and Reading have drawn 1-1 with QPR.
The Welsh Derby between Swansea and Cardiff kicks off at the bottom of the hour.
I'm settling in now to enjoy the big Cup Quarterfinal match between Everton and Citeh this afternoon. Citeh's quest for the quadruple is on the line in this one. Victory in this quarter final seems more likely than not: they’re currently on a six-game winning streak against Everton, and a four-match winning run at Goodison. They swatted the Toffees aside here last month, and have responded to neighbors United ending their 21-game winning run by starting another victorious sequence: three wins to the aggregate score of 10-2.
The team news for tonight's match:
Everton: Virginia, Holgate, Mina, Godfrey, Coleman, Andre Gomes, Allan, Digne, Sigurdsson, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison.
Subs: Keane, Iwobi, Nkounkou, Davies, Broadhead, John, Tyrer, Onyango, Leban.
Manchester City: Steffen, Walker, Laporte, Dias, Zinchenko, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Foden.
Subs: Stones, Aguero, Rodri, De Bruyne, Torres, Mendy, Mahrez, Joao Cancelo, Ederson.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland).
That's four changes for Everton from their home defeat to Burnley last weekend. Coleman, Mina and Siggy come in along with some bloke named Joao Virginia in goal.
Make that six changes for Citeh, as Steffen, Laporte, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Sterling and Gabby Jesus coming in.
Not surprisingly, this one has major implications for our PPP game. Four of us have chosen Citeh to appear in final, while three of us have favored Everton. Points lost either way, then.
Teams in the tunnel now - cue the Z Cars theme.
Good Afternoon, Bob. Here to join you. I saw the early Cup match and thought the score flattered the Saints. My condolences on the passing of Peter Lorimer
The commentators are already chalking this one up as a Citeh victory before a ball has been kicked. I hope that Everton can upset the apple cart.
They're off from Goodison Park
Afternoon, David - I hope that you're having a nice weekend. Thanks for the condolences. We've lost too many of the Revie side this past year. It's been a really sad time for Leeds fans.
Away we go, then. Come on, you Toffees!
Agreed. I second that. I expect Citeh to win , but would love to see the Toffees win in the match of former Bayern managers
Everton dropping off a bit too much as Citeh attack and now Citeh have a dangerous free kick.
Foden hits it with relish and Mina nods it up and out for a corner.
Thanks , Bob. Been enjoying the lovely weather. Yesterday catching up on house work and today raking mounds of leaves between matches
Hoping you and Kate have had a good Spring Break
I spent some time yesterday afternoon looking at the upcoming fixtures for England. They've got three qualifiers in the next week:
Thursday (3/25) - vs. San Marino 3:45pm EST
Sunday (3/28) - vs. Albania 12pm
Wednesday (3/31 - vs. Poland 3:45pm
I don't know what coverage, if any, there will be for these matches. ESPN+ has had the Euro qualifiers but I'm not sure that they have the WC ones. I would be around for the first half on Thursday, and for the whole matches on Sunday and Wednesday.
Well, it wasn't a break this year. The university decided to forgo the usual break in favor of a late start to the semester. So, we're heading into mid-term this next week, with eight weeks left of the semester.
Ruben Dias brings down Rich Arlison. Free kick punched pout by Ederson then a foul is called
The commentator mentions a Thursday evening friendly between the US and Jamaica on ESPN2 - that's another one to put on the calendar.
Citeh playing it about for fun but no real chances as of yet.
I will be around for England's international matches. Sorry you didn't get a Spring Break, but it sounds like Summer is just a couple of months away.. Melanie got a Spring Break, but not Jacquelyn
I'll be around for the U.S. matches too. I may be relegated to the bedroom for the match vs Jamaica because Elizabeth will be watching Grey's Anatomy
Here's the stat to ruin Dave's afternoon, if he were watching - Citeh with 83% possession so far.
What was for lunch, David?
Phil Foden has Digne his way to winning a Citeh corner
I had a turkey breast sandwich with pickle in the middle, and water. Was your more interesting?
Grey's Anatomy is one of our shows, too. We're wondering if this may be the last season, though.
Nice tribute to Peter "Hot Shot" Lorimer there.
Jon Champion is a champion cheerleader to Citeh's passing tactics
Richarlison tries a bit of an overhead trick. Well over the bar.
Elizabeth thinks it's the last season because she thinks Meredith is about to pass away and without her there isn't a show.
Agreed. That was a great tribute from Jon Champion
We had turkey sandwiches, too, with chips on the side.
Fernandinho brings down fellow Brazi, Rich Arlison,. who makes a meal of it despite minimal contact
Naughty from Fernandinho with a swinging elbow on his compatriot Richarlison.
That's a great addition. Sounds like a great lunch
Richarlison gets a bit of revenge back on Gundogan and picks up a yellow for it.
Fernandinho heads out a free kick from Digne for a Toffees corner
Toffees first corner taken by Digne and headed out
More Brazi bargy as Rich Arlison brings down Fernandinho
The free kick was anything but Sterling as it cleared the bar by several feet
With the absence of KDB, Sterling improbably steps up and blasts one well over the mark.
Long cross from Seamus Coleman had too much mustard on it
The marquee cup tie tomorrow is the Foxes vs United, but it should be similarly boring like this match is
Half an hour in and this one feels as if it's heading for extra time already. Has there been a shot on goal yet?
Heckingbottom the perfect name for the new Evil Blades coach because Heck they're going to finish bottom.
BOOM BOOM!
There have been shots , but I think they've been off target. Wonder if Citeh will score late
Oh - DCL nearly in there; Steffen made a bit of a mess of it.
Nice Toffees through ball , but Zak Steffen slide tackles the ball off of La Porte for a Toffees corner
By Heck, I think you're right, mate. LOL!
Sterling appears to have picked up a knock at some point.
Cheers, Bob. Strange trivia as Heck is the only English manager left in the FA Cup while he and the Brodge are the only British managers left in the competition
Jerry Minor clears for a Citeh corner
Fernandinho is begging for a card . He's committed lots of fouls
A tad naughty by Iwobi on Jesus
"A slow burner?" I'd call this match "Advil PM!"
A fifty yard back pass by Jesus to Zak Steffen off the Citeh free kick
Fernandinho should have got a yellow earlier on for the elbow on Rich; that might have been number two!
Nice one, Bob. I prefer your description
City are really struggling to penetrate this thin blue line.
Oh - Zinchenko nods off the line from Mina's header.
Phil Foden with a shot from 25 yards out deflected for a corner
Poor corner from Gundogan headed out by the first man and it's 0-0 at the end of a really boring half
Half-time: It hasn't been a classic by any stretch of the meaning. I'm off to whip out the smelling salts in preparation for the second half.
Funny interplay between Jon Champion and Craig Burley at half-time, with Champs trying to convince Burley that this match actually means something.
The second half is underway from Goodison. It can't be any worse than the first half
And we're away in the second half then.
Thomas didn't Tuchel Elizabeth's fancy as he was so loud in the interview that he woke up Elizabeth from a nap. Thankfully she was able to fall back asleep
Jerry Minor heads out a cross from Phil Foden for a Citeh corner
Andre Gomes Addams called for a foul on Sterling. He barely tapped him
I've also been scoping out the Euro 2021 schedule, which is likely to be a highlight of my summer. It all starts on Friday, June 11. England kick off matters with a match at Wembley with Croatia on Sunday, June 13 and then play Scotland at Wembley the following Friday, June 18. That's it for the group stage, which appears to be a round robin affair similar to the way that the WC was conducted up until 1986. The top two qualify for the knock out round along with the best third-placed teams.
The free kick was a complete waste
That sounds like the same format that was used for Euro 2016. Thanks for the schedule. It's a long story, but not sure what the schedule will be for Elizabeth and I this Summer. After we get the second dose of the vaccine we're getting the house ready to put up for sale and will be conducting several garage sales in the process
I'm not sure that I'll be up for a reunion yet. David Vansuch was actually offering up his palatial mansion in Pennsylvania but I told him that I didn't think that anyone would feel comfortable mingling in June. Too early for that.
Agreed, Bob. By the next WC it should be more conducive for getting together even though it's during the School year and holiday season.
Everton can pump a long ball in now. Richarlison has a chance but shanks it well wide.
Joe Virginia , not Alex, does well to turn around a Sterling shot off a run and pass from Fernandinho
It should be, definitely. That one is problematic as it will mostly occur during my fall semester. The schedule hasn't been released but I may miss a lot of the group stages.
I think it went just wide as a goal kick was given, but the young keeper had it covered
Pep is finally going to go to his bench to liven up affairs, with Mahrez being prepared.
Something needs to be done to liven up this match. Could be enjoying the lovely outdoor weather
Bernie Sanders trots off to be replaced by Mahrez.
Weekend at Bernie's replaced by Mahrez during the weekend
Wil you be around for the relegation six pointer. Not sure if I will because I may take advantage of the lovely weather to do some yardwork
Jon Champion said that the draw for the semis will be during halftime of the semi between the Foxes and United
Long range shot from Phil Foden not too far wide off a long Citeh possession
Kyle Walker tackles Digne for a Toffees corner off a pass from Andre Gomes Addams
It's a good thing that Leeds have the points in the bag already because after the Yorkshire Derby on April 3, our schedule gets, er....lively. Away to Citeh on April 10, home to Liverpool on April 17, home to United on April 24 and home to Spurs on May 8th. Since we've got little to play for, we can just go away and have a bit of fun with those matches.
Agreed, Bob. That's a tough run in for Leeds. Glad they're safe
Still no way through for either side.
Andre Gomes Addams booked for a foul despite Oliver Twist playing the advantage
The other five matches we've got are against the bottom half clubs, so there should be some points there. We may even get to 50 points or so.
Jesus down off a challenge from Ben Godfrey that seemed innocuous. Play resumes
I think 50 points is realistic and quite an achievement for Leeds first season back up
KDB is coming on for the ineffectual Raheem Sterling.
Pep bringing on his match winner as KDB is on for Sterling, who wasn't exactly that today
Extra time and possibly penalties looming now. It felt that way from the off, to be honest.
Phil Foden whips a shot in that Virginia falls on.
GOAL !!! GUNDOGAN GIVES CITEH A LATE LEAD.
GOAL! Finally the breakthrough for Citeh. Gundogan mops up the chance created by Laporte's rocket off the bar.
0-1 Citeh!
Nice long run by Laporte, who passed to KDB , who was fouled in the D. The ball broke to LaPorte and his shot was tipped on to the bar by Virginia. The rebound bounced as Gundogan dove to easily head in
Alex Iwobi to come on to replace Holgate for the last few minutes. Time for a rescue effort for the Toffees.
A much needed attacking switch from Ancelotti as Iwobi is on for Mason Holgate
DCL latches onto a free kick into the box but Steffen collects easily.
A Toffees equalizer would be great but not sure if we can handle an extra half hour of this
Finally the match has gotten stretched out, albeit in the 87th minute.
I'm not sure about that either. Kate is anxious to do the shopping list and some adoption paper work.
Pep responds by shutting up shop as Rodri is on for Gundogan
A late, late sub to ruin Dave's whole evening. Rodri on for goalscorer Gundogan.
GOAL !!! KDB PUTS CITEH TWO UP AND THAT SHOULD SEAL cITEH'S PLACE IN THE SEMIS. VAR CHECKING FOR POSSIBLE OFFSIDE
GOAL! That's torn it. KDB runs through and scores a second for Citeh.
0-2!
The scoreline flatters Citeh who haven't really broken a sweat in this match. But they won't care - they're through to the semis and could well get Soton.
Citeh with a throw headed back to midfield then a long ball played for KDB , who turned a defender then finished easily past Virginia to put Citeh two up as we're in stoppage time
Agreed, Bob. Knowing Citeh's luck they'll get the Saints in the semis
Just wide by Fernandinho as Citeh threaten to run up the score
Oh - Fernandinho nearly adds a third just to add insult to injury.
Wishing you and Kate the best with the adoption
It's over and Citeh through to the semis as they win 0-2 thanks to two late goals
That's it - Citeh's quadruple dream is still on course.
Not sure if I will be around for the relegation six pointer on the Cock
The only thing left to shout about today is the relegation dogfight between Brighton and Newcastle on Peacock.
I'll likely be in and out for that one.
Same here, Bob. It doesn't sound like a classic
In the relegation six-pointer, Brighton have gone in a goal to the good thanks to that last minute Trossard strike.
Seagulls vs Toon hasn't exactly been a classic. Leo Trossard gave the Seagulls a deserved lead with the last kick of the half
GOAL!!! WELLIE DONE AS THE SEAGULLS GO TWO UP. RECEIVED A PASS DOWN THE LEFT AND CUT IN TO SCORE WITH A GREAT FINISH IN THE CORNER SIMILAR TO THE WAY THAT TH 14 OR AUBAMA WOULD
A minute earlier Wee Ryan had a curler from the corner of the box come off the post that would have tied it up off a pass from Almiron
It's a long way back now for Newcastle. This result will hearten Fulham fans, for sure. It's looking increasingly like it's a choice between those two sides for that last relegation spot.
GOAL !!! NEIL MAUPAY PUTS THE SEAGULLS THREE UP WITH A WELL PLACED VOLLEY OFF A GREAT CROSS.
The goal came off a long Seagulls possession against a passive Toon defense. It culminated in Wellie play the ball wide right to Gross and it was gross incompetence by Paul Dummett as he was easily beaten then Gross put in a great cross for Mauypay to score with a great volley
No way back for the Magpies now. Over and out.
With 32 points from 29 matches now, you'd have to imagine that Brighton are just about safe. I still think that Newcastle on 28 points from 29 and a game in hand on Fulham are in pole position to stay up but they really needed at least a point today.
It's over at the AMEX as the Seagulls do the double over the Toon for the first time since 1979, winning both matches 3-0. A much needed win for the Seagulls , who are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone. The Toon are in trouble , only a pair of points clear of the drop zone. Looks like the last relegation spot may be between the Toon and Cottagers and those two face off at Bob and Kate's on the last day of the season
That's it for me. Great chatting and look forward to chatting tomorrow.
CHEERS!
