Euro 2020/1 - Day 7

Morning, chaps! We're wrapping up the first week of this summer's European Championships tournament today. We start out with a duff match-up between the two losers from the first round of matches in Group C - Ukraine and Macedonia. I'll likely be in and out during that one. At noon, we've got the Group B match-up between Belgium and Denmark. Of course, the Danes will still be recovering from Christian Eriksen's traumatic cardiac arrest on the pitch last weekend, so it'll be a poignant moment. I'll be around for that one, for sure. Finally, the late one is the match-up between the two Group C winners, Netherlands and Austria. I'm looking forward to seeing how that one turns out.

In some sort of weird exchange program the ref for this match is from Argentina. The trade is that a European ref is officiating at Copa America

They're off from Bucharest

Morning David

I have been saying what a good job the officials have been doing so far.....are they ruining it bringing in a SA?

9:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good Morning, Dave. I don't believe in bringing in officials from other confederations. It sounds like a publicity stunt

Good morning Chaps! I'm at the out-laws this morning while Melanie and her Mom do errands. I've been watching the matches but yesterday I was hung over like a goat. I may no longer be able to tolerate red wine, or bad red wine any more.

Any hope that this will be entertaining?

9:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Fans booing Ukraine every time they have possession. I looked at a map and it seems that Ukraine is about the same distance from Bucharest as North Macedonia. The locals must be rooting for North Macedonia

I was thinking that if Spain stink it up in their final two games that it will mean that their fussy, look-at-me refs will get the quarter, semi, and possible final selection. Too bad.

9:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good Morning , Steve. Hope you are feeling better. My prediction in this match is that Ukraine will do the attacking and since they were a match for the Dutch, it may get out of hand if Ukraine scores early. Supposedly Ukraine is a fun side to watch since Sheva became manager

9:10 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's possible. UEFA needs to clamp down on the fussy refs, but sadly probably won't

9:10 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

TAKE THE SHOT!!!!

A big break....why didn't he shoot!!

9:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yaremchik went on a nice solo run and a last ditch tackle for a corner by Ristoivski prevented a goal

9:12 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Moring Steve

9:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That is a problem at alll levels . Even in the USL match last night players from both sides took too long to shoot

9:13 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The Ukes have lost my support. I've waited for them to show me something ever since their hey day of Sheva and Rebrov and whomever was that clanking siege machine they had playing defensive midfield. I'd be in favor of a FIFA conference alignment that puts them and Russia and the Bolshie Balkan and Caucasus states all in together.

9:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve, according to the Beetles that would be back in the USSR? They disappointed in similar ways and were constantly underachieving. I know not to pick them in the PPP

pass from the right side footed into the side netting by Elmas

9:16 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Did you all find it a bit hilarious that Alioski managed to irk Arsnoutavic into a non PC outburst that's seen him banned for 2 matches? That's him done in this tournament. Alioski has done it again.

9:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ukes defensive players and keeper chosen sole from Kiev and Waxtep while the attacking starters play abroad. The Macedonians with the exception of Pandev, Ali, and Elmas, play in Europe's lower leagues or the lower divisions of the top European Leagues

9:18 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I didn't quite understand what happened , but I thought I heard one match for a racial remark. That's typically stupid Arnautovic .That will hurt Austria as he made difference for them once he came off thew sub's bench.

9:20 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm surprised that Waxtap has any representation to offer the Ukes with the number of third-rate Brazilians they have in their side.

9:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Alba tried to shut his mouth!!

9:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I hate all the booing....just cheer for your team! Sing songs!

9:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Steve. I guess the Brazis don't play any ion the positions requiring making hard tackles and probably don't doing much running. That's my guess . I thought a couple were naturalized and have played for the Ukraine

9:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed , Dave. I hate the booing too. Also, hard to stop Arnautovic. He's a thicko

9:24 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't think the Euros should have expanded from 16 to 24. With all the group games, only a 1/3 of the teams get knocked out!
I guess everyone still has a shot in the last game of the group but it is like the NBA Playoffs

9:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Both teams trying to attack and other than the early minutes haven't been successful at the attacking end

9:25 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

NBA reg season I mean

9:25 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

You're right. Marko only banned for one. He's a naturalized Serb and let loose with an enthusiastic string of anti-Macedonian insults that the Serbs favor. What a plank.

9:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

There was no need to increase to 24. There are far fewer than 24 teams that are even good enough to play in the tournament .It's ridiculous

9:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

He should have been banned for more than one . He needs to be out of the tournament ion he's that prejudice. FIFA and their confederations need to clamp down on that

9:29 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! JAMMY LENKO SCORES ON THE NEXT POSSESSION TO GIVE UKRAINE THE LEAD

9:29 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice flick but mark up!!!

9:29 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The corner came from a close offside position. It wasn't called offside and it wasn't offside but was it checked?
If it was offside and they scored from the resulting corner...what's the dif from scoring from the first play

9:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought offside had been called , but a corner was awarded and really atrocious defending allowed an easy tap in for Jammy lento as the corner was flicked on

9:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure, but I guess once the corner is flicked on then offside called. I agree because offside isn't supposed to be called direct from a corner

9:32 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Was the goal "Hammered" in?

9:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If this result holds and the Dutch win later today then North Macedonia is out

9:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The first play was definitely on-side but what if it wasn't

I wasn't talking about the corner, I was talking about the move that made the corner

TWO NIL!!!!

9:34 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! YARMCHUK PUYTS UKRAINE TWO UP AS THE MACEDONIANS WERE SLICED APART . NICE THROUGH BALL HAMMERED IN BY JAMMY LENKO

9:35 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I agree. It was a perfect opportunity to punish racist and prejudicial speech. Arsnoutavic is a comedy villain that no-one would miss if the hammer fell.

9:35 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He's looking at the linesman....saying....ifffy if it is on-side

Again, I think they are using VAR so much better than the PL...I do hope they are paying attention on how it's done

9:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

VAR checking , but it appears that it should stand. Checking for offside

9:35 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It counts

9:35 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

So much for the hype surrounding the Macedonians. There's the second Uke goal and what a composed finish it was.

9:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think this one could get out of hand

9:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

This match a perfect example of what happens when you allow teams in the tournament who weren't good enough to qualify

9:37 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Morning, chaps - I'm just checking in briefly on this one. It looks like Gjanni Alioski and co. are bowing out of this tournament abjectly.

9:39 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

NM get the ball in the net...but the flag goes up late...which they are told to do

Just offside

Nice finish

9:39 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The superior application of VAR here has been noted in the English press so I have hopes that the FA will respond and improve.

9:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL!!! PANDEV BEATS THE OFFSIDE TRAP AND SCORES. No it's disallowed. A shame as it was a nice finish

9:39 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Almost in again... almost another OG.....he's on fire!!

9:40 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. Something needs to be done because the Prem's use of VAR has been an abject and abysmal failure

9:40 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm sorry that the Pandev goal was overruled because that was class the way he chipped the ball in.

9:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

In our Noon match, Belgium will kick the ball out of play at the ten minute mark to have an applause for Eriksen

9:41 AM

9:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

9:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That's a class act . Glad they are having the applause for Eriksen.

9:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This has been a decent match

No BLOODY PEP ball

Teams attacking going forward with pace

9:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Fingers crossed this is a turning point.....but alas....there is Spain

9:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Man goes down in the box.... card for a dive

WELL DONE!!!

Stupidity by the striker...go and score!!

In the Prem....the two Robbies would say...."well, there is contact"

9:43 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Good to see cheating punished. Shaparenko cautioned for that dive in the box.

9:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shaprenko anything but sharp as he wins a tackle down the left then goes on a long solo run and a horrible attempt to win a penalty with a horrible dive

9:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. I'm hoping Pep ball gets phased out of the game

9:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

To fix the game

Retrospectively ban players for cheating...all contact doesn't make you fall

Do something about the added time and the clock...it is over the top stupid now

9:45 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Into stoppage time. A minute of that

9:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

HT... entertaining half
2-0 to the Ukes

9:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ukraine two up at the half and well in control

9:47 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I hate when the Robbies equivocate like that. They've been retired for yonks so it's not as if they need to worry that they won't get a Christmas card from someone they call out.

9:47 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I like Foudy's comment... much more VERTICAL threat!

9:47 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Pep-Ball might take a hit because the Spanish are so wedded to that style and this Spanish side are bollocks. This tournament may be won by an attacking side.

9:49 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time - Ukraine go in 2-0 up and comfortable. The Red Card point is still up for grabs and two players - UWS and Teddy - have chosen Ilijia Nesterovski and Gooner has chosen my fair Gjanni to go off for an early bath. With the Macedonians getting progressively more desperately, that could definitely happen.

9:50 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Off we go for the second half

A good second half please

10:01 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

A big chance for NoMac...well saved

Good start to the game

I thought Ukraine had this wrapped up, but we have a match on our hands

10:18 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

What's with all the missed penalties in this tournament? Is sticking it by a stranded keeper too much to ask these days? Ali to be fair was on the parried save like a flash and put it in, no messing at the second attempts. Game on?

10:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Still a lot of chances here.... players are starting to be idiots tho

10:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ali made Bob proud. Is he the first LUFC player to score this tournament?

10:23 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

There's an inexplicable level of needle in this one. I don't get it but you would imagine some kind of rivalry if you didn't know better.

10:24 AM

Blogger manunitedrules said...

North Mac needs to tie it up or they could be heading out of the tournament . I could see the Dutch defeating Austria

10:29 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What a novel idea....Shoot!

10:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Ukraine should have taken a 3-1 lead. Tsyangov, who just came one shot wide with just the keeper to beat as the Macedinian defense was carved apart

10:31 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Why does everyone in the media now say Meeeelan....drives me nuts

10:32 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Avramovski on for Bahrdi

10:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Mouth guard to fix a groin issue!

10:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Now Sheva replies as Sydrachuk is on for the player that drive to try to win the penalty

10:35 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bob's choice for top of the group would be the first eliminated

10:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That's one Dynamo Kiev player for another . Alll three subs off the bench have been Kiev players. Lots of Kiev players utilized by Sheva

10:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That would be lights out for the Dark Horses ?

10:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Play stopped for some sort of check. What are they checking?

10:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Argie ref going to the monitor. I guess a penalty check for alleged hand ball

10:38 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Looks like a VAR check for a penalty for Ukraine now; looks like unintentional handball to me.

10:38 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Potential NoMac handball. I don't think so but...

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

PENALTY! ALI CALLED , BUT IT WAS BALL TO HAND WHEN HE WAS IN THE WALLL OFF A UKRAINE FREE KICK. HE WAS USING HIS ARMS FOR LEVERAGE. ACCORDING TO THE REVISED RULES THAT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A PENALTY

SAVED FROM MALINOVSKY! JUSTICE DONE

10:40 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Saved! That's the third penalty miss - the trend that Steve noted earlier continues! Justice served.

10:40 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

JUSTICE. A shit decision is wiped out by an even shittier penalty take.

10:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

ANOTHER PENALTY SAVED!!!

Maybe the prediction should have been first penalty SCORED!

Ronny scored...anyone else?

I know of at least FOUR misses. Two in this match, Bale and Hoy Berg

10:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

He's from Argentina in some joke exchange program. This shows the exchange has been an exercise in futility. A Euro ref at Copa America as part of the exchange. What a joke!

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Is four the record number of penalty misses at a Euro. If a knockout match goes to penalties then we could be up all night

10:43 AM

10:47 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Ah. I'd spotted him as Spanish speaking but hadn't seen that he's a guest from Argentina. How was that going to help matters? An Argentine has no clear understanding of European footballing culture and that decision proved it.

Honestly, footballing organizations are the worst thing about football. They think they know so much and only they can save the game.

It could go either way, couldn't it? The Danes are good players and with fire in their hearts and encouraged by the crowd, they might pull off a surprise. But Belgium are very good, just occasionally unmotivated, and possibly hampered by the absence of KDB. KDB, Dendonker and Theilmans are not.

Oh my goodness - Maehle nearly broke through for a second goal. Denmark are off to a flyer.

Danes are all over them!!

I think that Jason was a denier this time with that close range block

Will the ten minute mark slow the Danes down?

12:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - now Vass has a headed chance at the backpost. Denmark will likely need a second goal in order to withstand the Belgian onslaught that will surely come once they catch their breaths.

Great early start by the Danes . The Belgians look to have been rattled by the early goal. Great atmosphere

Some great singing in the crowd now - they're well up for this one. Hopefully Christian is watching in his hospital room. The Danes have been outstanding so far.

The Belgians haven't gotten started yet - they seem stunned.

With the window open, he will be able to hear it in person

Christian will be delighted

The Belgians hadn't kicked it out

Finally they do

Now play stippled for a minute for a minute's applause for Christian Eriksen

12:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Here's that scheduled tribute to Eriksen now. The Belgians didn't quite get the cue right and had to be reminded by the Danish players.

Blogger United We Stand said...

And we are off again

12:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Play resumes after the minute's applause . Both sides an both sets of fans applauding

12:12 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Even the ref is clapping. Nice.

12:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So, he might be able to play again!

Oh - Poulsen found Damsgaard in the area but he just couldn't quite control his effort on goal.

12:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Long ball from Kasper headed on and the cross from Pulsen shot wide by Damsgaard

12:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Upset that the Danes haven't increased their lead

Another great attacking match so far

Would he take the chance? He's going to have an appliance fitted in his chest to like a pacemaker that jolts his heart into working if it stops again. I've never heard of an athlete with one of those. Possibly a golfer, but not an athlete.

This is a real test for Belgium now. They haven't gotten a foothold in this match yet.

12:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I thought the same but they just said Daly Blind has the same thing

12:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've been thinking the same thing, Steve - I can't imagine Eriksen ever playing again. Sad to say but it's just too much of a risk for him.

Poulsen got the cross horribly wrong off nice Danish one touch passing
