It All Starts Again!
Morning, chaps! I hope that you're well rested because it's here again. The traditional curtain raiser - the Community Shield match - welcomes in the new season today with a clash between champions Man City and FA Cup holders Leicester City. This time next weekend we'll be enjoying Man Utd v. Leeds, so today's match, along with the Championship fixtures, are there just to whet the appetite. Join me for the first silverware of the new season, won't you?

I'm just checking in with the half=time scores in the Championship:
Blackburn 1 Swans 0
Bristol C. 1 Blackpool 0
Cardiff 0 Barnsley 0
Derby 1 Huddersfield 1
Luton 1 Posh 0
PNE 1 Hull 1
QPR 1 Millwall 1
Stoke 2 Reading 1
Into the second half, Blackburn are 2-1 up now.
Cardiff have taken the lead over Barnsley
The starting line-ups for the big Wembley match are in and Citeh are having a laugh. No Grealish, of course, but also no KDB, Sterling, Gabby Jesus, Ederson, or Stones.
Leicester: Schmeichel, Pereira, Amartey, Soyuncu, Bertrand, Ndidi, Tielemans, Perez, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy.
Manchester City: Steffen, Cancelo, Dias, Ake, Mendy, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Palmer, Mahrez, Edozie, Torres.
In other big Premier League news, Chelsea are close to re-signing Romelu Lukaku. That would be a huge boon for them but also an indication that they're giving up on signing Kane.
Teams are out on the pitch now. Brodg is in a suit; Pep of course is wearing a t-shirt. No respect for the occasion.
We're off then at Wembley - wahay!
The typical slow start so far.
Early free kick chance now for Citeh - Gundogan hits and Kasper tips over for a corner.
Nice run from Harvey Barnes there earns a corner.
It’s a game so far that betrays a lack of sharpness, particularly for the champions, who are a bit of a cut-and-shut team. Leicester look sharper but not exactly fluent.
Good morning, Bob. Just got back from an 80 mile round trip to the vet. Been up since 5:30 this morning so a little fatigued
Not a fan of Citehs green shorts
Dangerous ball in there from Mendy turned around somewhat unconvincingly by Soyuncu.
Soyuncu slices a cross from Mendy over then a corner from off the training ground shot over by Mahrez .Nice idea
Hiya, David - great to have you on board. I hope that the vet appointment went well. Who's ailing in your household?
Long range effort there from Vardy that Steffen decided to take no chances with.
Zak Steffen turns around a shot from Vardy. Was headed wide
Mahrez with a shot deflected over on the counter
Mahrez was sprung by a long ball out but his eventual effort was deflected out.
Thanks Bob. It's Sparky. His appetite decreased starting Wednesday. Ran some tests yesterday and hisiver count was high. Everything else normal. This morning an ultrasound and everything normal so the diagnosis wS an infection of the liver. He is on antibiotics, appetite stimulant , and nausea pill.
Foxes counter The 4th Pre, found Ricatdo and his pass was diverted by anyone straight to Steffen then Ndidi wins a tackle and a good close range block by Steffen from Vardy
Sorry to hear about Sparky.
Yesterday was the curtain raiser in the Championship. Cherries vs Baggies finished Desmond
Thanks Bob. He's fifteen and to his credit He's fighting the good fight
Oh dear - Edozie with a big miss there.
This isn't a full strength Citeh side against full strength Foxes side, so surprising it's 0-0
Some things don't change. Danny Higginbotham calling Citeh pragmatic for scoring fewer goals, but winning the title. I call that BORING
cLUMSY FOUL BY sOYUNCU ON mAHREZ
Soyuncu gives away a cheap one and City can swing one in.
Gundogan to take.Edoze heads across and it's cleared AWAY
Edozie isn't exactly taking his opportunity to shine today.
Unit6ed thrashed the Toffees 4-0 ion a friendly earlier today. Now I know why they say Toffees have a soft centre
You're absolutely right that this isn't a full strength Citeh side. I don't know why the South American players haven't reported back to training yet. The Copa America ended the same weekend that the Euros ended and you've got plenty of players who were involved in the Euros on display.
Agreed. Edoze's next chance won't come till the League Cup. I guess he can go on loan to a Championship , SPL. or one of Europe's lesser leagues
In the Olypmpics Brazil defeated SPain in ET to win the gold medal. Yesterday Mexico defeated hosts, Japan 3-1 in the bronze medal game
I'm sick of people going gaga over Citeh's depth. Anyone can build a team with money. How would Pep do at a smaller club where he would have to build a team from the academy system ?
Jack Grealish may make his Citeh debut in the second half
Great close range save by Steffen from Vardy from close range . Nice run and pass from Harvey Barnes but a missed sitter by Vardy . Came off Steffen then the post
It's 0-0 at the half
Not much to shout about with this one. I'm looking forward to much better next weekend from our two Uniteds.
Agreed - I'd love to see Pep try to keep Watford up this season with their resources.
Teams coming out for the second half now. Just a reminder that there is no provision for extra time today, so it's either a sorting out in regular time or immediately on to pens.
Edozie with a cross that had Kasper momentarily a bit worried. We've seen those drift in to embarrass goalkeepers.
Come on, you lot - this is supposed to be an entertainment.
Grealish has got up to warm-up on the touchline which has created a bit of a buzz in the crowd. This might be precisely the kind of stage that he relishes.
Back for the second half and Mahrez fouled in the D by new signing, Ryan Bertrand, who is booked for that
Poor free kick by former fox, Mahrez as it's well over
It will be a new experience for Grealish. He was the star at Villa and everything was built around and at Citeh he will be just one of the guys
Surprised the Foxes signed the likes of Ryan Bertrand . Thought they could do better than that unless he's there for depth
I agree; I assume that Bertrand is merely there for depth. He had found his level at Soton IMHO.
Final scores in the Championship
Bburn 2 Swans 1
Bristol City 1 Bpool 1
Cardiff 1 Barnsley 1
Derby 3 Hudders 0
Luton 3 Posh 0
Preston 1 Hull 4
QPR 1 Millwall 1
Stoke 3 Reading Railroad 2
I'm not sure how Citeh line up with Grealish to be honest. He's not really a Citeh kind of player, but more like a traditional #10. He takes too much time on the ball, doesn't lay the ball off endlessly and doesn't track back.
Evil Blades vs Brum kicks off at 3 PM
Great start for Derby who have been in a mess. That will hearten Roon and co.
Harvey Barnes wins a corner off of Nathan Ake
I'm not surprised by that poor start for the Swans. I was chatting with Swansong last weekend and he does not rate Swansea's chances this season. He thinks that they might actually struggle to stay up!
Agreed about Grelaish. I'm guessing he's the back up to Mahrez and heir apparent. He's the closest in style to Mahrez in terms of the Citeh squad. He might be there for the salary increase
Mahrez was played through there but his lack of pace let him down, allowing Ndidi to get back to put pressure on him.
Last season was the Swans last season of parachute payments from the Prem so they will probably struggle to keep many of the stars. Sadly Swansong may be correct
Mahrez with a shot blocked for a corner off a corner
Well, Grealish tends to like to play down the left side but not as far forward as Sterling. Mahrez likes to play wide right. Then you've got the likes of Fernan Torres and KDB to account for. I'd have to say that KDB is the closest to Grealish's playing style and position and I can't see Pep dropping KDB for him. I figure he'll play a squad role. Yes, very different from his position at Villa, where he was the man. And of course Villa will really struggle to replace him. I'm predicting a lower half finish for them but not in relegation trouble.
I have been thinking about the PPP the past few days. We should add UEFA Conference League Winners to the list. Picking that one accurately is a mix of talent and luck
Why is there a drinks break. It's a cool rainy day. Back in the day they didn't need a drinks break
I've always thought that predicting the Europa League winner is the most difficult bracket because you have to account for those who might finish third in their CL groups and get dumped into the pool in the spring.
Hi boys
Had a busy day so far
I am here as Jack the Lad comes on
So then - Rodri for Gundogan and more tantalizingly, Jack Grealish on for Edozie. Should be interesting.
Rodri for Gundogan and Grealish for Edozie for his Citeh debut. We will see what his role will be in this Citeh side
Hiya, Dave - great to hear from you today. Hope things are good.
Maybe the EL choice should be picked as the teams are set in the Fall after the CL group stage is done
Sounds like you're right,. Bob. Grealish is playing the KDB role. I thought he would be wide left like at Villa
Good Afternoon, Dave. Welcome
Grealish has lined up where I expected. Down the inside left channel. Who knows - it may be that Sterling's days are numbered at Citeh. We'd have him at Elland Road, that's for sure.
I think EL winner is already on the list. I was thinking of Conference League as an addition. That's a challenge to predict for sure
First chance for Grealish to stretch his legs then. He runs straight into trouble.
My good friend Joe is not doing well at all
He was one of my tennis buddies and known him since 1993.
He just turned 79 but he has really gone downhill fast
Walt and I try and get to house as much as we can
Today, he was just laying in bed and not very aware
So sad
Bob, agreed with your assessment of Villa . I was thinking about the same.
I know the EL winner is already a choice. I am saying, delay the choice until the teams are set after the CL group stage
Would that mean picking the top seven or just the one team who ends up in the Conference League?
Very sorry, Dave. That's very sad . Thoughts go out top Joe his freinds, and family
I was actually talking about the actual winner of it
I have always thought that the European competitions should count as much as they do.
I prefer to concentrate on domestic stuff
I mean the Conference League Winner at the end of the season. In the Prem still stay with the top five
Thanks David
The rain is teeming down and Pep's ridiculous white tee is getting soaked. Serves him right.
That makes sense , Dave. I hadn't thought about points for the Conference League winner. EL winner is four points, so two for the Conference League winner?
Sorry to hear about your mate, Dave. Very sad.
LOL, Bob! Very peppy and accurate
Let's keep that in mind for next season, eh? I've already got quite a few submissions in for this season.
I'm surprised to see Bernie Sanders today - apparently he wants out of Citeh.
B Silva....gets a pass behind the defense...chance to cross...goes backwards and the ball gets passed around!
I don't know how Grealish will fit into a Bloody Pep team....will he be disciplined enough
Sad news in the canine world. Sparky's buddy passed away Tuesday. He was an eight year old Boxer who was euthanized because cancer had spread throughout his body. My sister-in-law is beside herself
Does this go straight to pens
Grealish with a nice fun but then flops. Nothing doing from the ref.
I think it does go straight to pens. No ET nd thankfully so. Who would want to watch these two for 120 minutes
All this subbing.....they don't care about winning the Shield
Iehanacho on for Barnes now - he did well at the tail end of the season when Vardy was coming back from injury.
sad canine news indeed
The names on the back of the Citeh shirts look like a digital calculator display. Don't like them.
Not sure if this was mentioned, but an upset in the SPL. Dundee United defeated Rangers 1-0
Thanks, Dave
More crazy news
My brother-in-law Jon(he was the Johnny that the band is named after) had a heart attack last weekend. It was on his 62nd birthday. He stayed a couple of days in hospital but is already home and doing very well
Eight years isn't much of an innings for a dog - sorry to hear that.
Again, not much doing in this game. There have been more competitive Community Shield matches, let’s put it that way. It looks like a training exercise.
Citeh wear sky blue shirts when they play Chelsea , but white shirts and green shorts today. Trying to advertise the new away kit?
I see that Bloody Pep has dressed up for the occasion again
Crikey - that's not good at 62. Did he have to have surgery (bypass or stent or something)?
Thanks, Bob.
Very sorry, Dave. Hope he feels better. Glad he's back at home
Yeah - it's a disgrace. Brodg has a suit on and Pep looks like he's taken a quick trip to the laundromat.
Oh - Daka was through there but Steffen stood up well to him.
Penalties beckon....
Penalty to Leicester
Crikey - penalty to Leicester! They have a chance to win it!
Stent
Poor from Nathan Ake then. Lost control and then tripped up Iehanacho.
100% penalty
I hate all this arguing....are we going to get this South American disease this season?
That seems to be standard operating procedure for men with heart problems of that age. But he's got to be careful now.
A gift from Ake and poor defending , coughing up the ball in his box
GOAL !!! FORMER CITHE PLAYER,. IHENACO PUTS THE SPOT KICK IN THE UPPER 90
Iehanacho up and...
Scores!
Leicester are moments away from winning the first silverware of the season!
LOVE IT
Zak Steffen got his finger tips to it, but couldn't stop it from going in
It was almost saved
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes
Solo run by Grealish but well tackled
Ooh....Leicester almost in again!
There will be four added minutes
I thought there would be more
Pep is not amused, to say the very least. He really doesn’t like losing, even a glorified friendly.
This result will make the Citeh-Spurs match next weekend all the juicier, especially if the Kane transfer isn't resolved by then.
I agree it is a friendly but I think this game should be taken seriously. You have to qualify for the game....take it seriously
They said Kane won't play for either team
I like it that players lift their arms as they win!!
Well done Foxes
It's over and the Foxes win 1-0. The two managers shake hands , but Pep with a sourpuss look
Yeah - but this result will rattle Citeh, especially with Chelsea on the verge of signing Lukaku and all of the big signings that United have made.
Brilliant - well done, Leicester!
I think Citeh will have a tough time defending the Prem . As you stated , other teams have made great signings
Take care boys
I'll hopefully be around for Friday afternoon
TTFN
I'll look forward to chatting with you on Friday. Have a good week and remember to get your PPP predictions to me!
Cheers, Bob and Dave. Great chatting and thanks for the reminder. Have a great week
