Come on, England!
Morning, chaps! It's Quarterfinal day for England. The Three Lions are in Rome this evening to meet Ukraine, with a semi-final berth against either Czech Republic or Denmark on Wednesday at Wembley at stake. The last time England were in this position in the European Championships, Steve and I were at Wembley with our mum and dad to see a Stuart Pearson penalty see off Spain in the Quarterfinals of Euro '96. Let's hope it's another big win for the boys today.
Before the big match, there is the undercard affair between the Czechs and Danes to enjoy. Join me to roar on the boys today, won't you?

We're in the Olympic Stadium in Baku for the opening match today. Denmark go into the match as warm favorites on the back of emphatic wins over Russia and Wales, but are likely to face stiff opposition from a Czech Republic side that raised eyebrows by knocking out the Netherlands in the last round.
Hello Bob
I didn't know you were at Wembley for that match...you lucky boys!!!
3 years ago today.......Colombia at the Cottage!!!
Baku's Olympic Stadium....never hosted an Olympics?
Could you get any further east of Europe than Baku?
Did you see the video of the Imobile getting up after laying on the ground for the goal and gets up to celebrating
Only one change total between the two team from the R16 sides
Czech Republic v Denmark line-ups
Czech Republic: Vaclik, Coufal, Celustka, Kalas, Boril, Holes, Soucek, Masopust, Barak, Sevcik, Schick.
Subs: Kaderabek, Brabec, Darida, Krmencik, Jankto, Mandous, Zima, Vydra, Kral, Koubek, Pekhart, Pesek.
Denmark: Schmeichel, Christensen, Kjaer, Vestergaard, Stryger Larsen, Hojbjerg, Delaney, Maehle, Braithwaite, Dolberg, Damsgaard.
Subs: Andersen, Skov, Skov Olsen, Mathias Zanka Jorgensen, Norgaard, Lossl, Wass, Wind, Poulsen, Cornelius, Ronnow, Jensen.
Referee: Bjorn Kuipers (Holland)
Morning, Dave - how are you, mate? I hope you're feeling confident today.
Yeah - Steve and I saw all of the England matches at Euro 96 at Wembley along with Italy v. Russia at Anfield and Germany v. Russia at Old Trafford. And of course the final where we were all wishing that England had been playing the Czechs.
WOW!!
So jealous
I told you that my two brothers, Jon and Phil went to the Old Trafford semi because Jon didn't think England would win the group and would have to go up north
There's a montage of the Danish campaign now. It's ironic that they're still in the competition and yet the teams that beat them in Group B - Finland and Belgium - are now both gone.
Yeah - I remember your telling me that story. What a laugh!
We also went to four matches at USA '94 and one match at Japanorea '02 whne I was living in Japan.
I did go to one match at USA 94
I won the ticket from a radio station(we cheated)
Nigeria v Italy in Boston
Teams in the tunnel
Denmark in all white
CR in red and blue
The teams are coming out now - all I ask is that they sort this one out in regular time so that I can prepare properly for the big one.
Rumors that Mount and Sancho are going to start today
I wouldn't worry about players being suspended for the semi
Play everyone that you want. If the squad is strong enough...replace them in the semis if there isn't much of a drop off
Not sure...I think I would prefer to have it just come straight after so I didn't have to worry!!
The second match is on ABC
I hope that I can get to another big tournament. I always had a dream about writing a book where I would pick 10 or 12 qualifiers from around the world and travel there with a friend for each one and write it up. But I would need an advance to swing the cost.
Again, I am going to not be commenting as much during the England match to watch the tv and not the computer
England could have the CR in qualifying, Group and Semi!!
Sick of the sight of them!
2026 is here!!
Every team playing Denmark giving them a shirt with Eriksen on it
Great idea for a book
Weather in Rome for a 9 o'clock kick off is 79 degrees
Thanks, I think it would sell well if I could ever get it written.
Me too!
Nearly 90F at kickoff today - I hope it's not as hot for England in Rome today.
The Czechs with the early pressure.
Czech shot blocked at the top of the box
Corner to the Danes
I don't know who would be the better opponent for England in the semis. As you say, we certainly know the Czechs well enough and have beaten them a couple of times at Wembley recently.
Free header....ONE NIL!!!
England '18 type goal
GOAL! Danish draw blood first. Free header for Delaney at around the penalty spot.
It was a gift corner...most think it was a goal kick
As for the semi....I don't give a toss!
JUST GET THERE!
Danes get another corner.... will they make it count again
That was a bit against the run of play and from a corner that seemed dubious but they took full advantage.
I hope that England can convert from set pieces today. That's always been a weapon for this team but we haven't scored any from corners and free kicks yet.
Cleared for another one
Exactly!
We've been useless
Well - the John Stones header against the bar against Scotland should have gone in.
Nice pace to this match - both sides giving it a go.
Everyone is talking about England having an unfair advantage playing all the games but one at Wembley....it is just like any host of the tourney
England are more of a host than anyone
This time other teams had home field advantage as well instead of just one
ooh....Denmark almost in again
I just changed my profile pic
Oooh....that should have been two!
Did you see Jesus' red card last night?
Both of these teams are putting in dangerous corners.... about time
No one in the British Isles can go to the match today
Ex-Pats living in Europe could go
Apparently, Bob doesn't like my new pic...he's scarpered
Great idea of a pass....just too long
Stupid playing around at the back by the Danes
Steve has just posted a picture of us here at the Cottage before the 2018 quarterfinal between England and Sweden. Magic!
Wow - that's a great image!
Bugger...I wasn't there for that one!!
That was on my birthday....so is another big match!
I'm tired of all this talk about England having an unfair advantage. Every four years, the host team gets the home advantage. What's the difference?
Again....3 years ago today....what memories
I said exactly the same thing
It's almost like everyone expects England to win now and it will be failure if they don't. I disagree. I think it's a tribute to Gareth Southgate that he's gotten England to the final four in 2018 and now the final eight in 2021. England are improving!
Agreed
The Czechs are usually great at set pieces but that delivery won't help matters.
ooh , another good break by the Danes...just too close to the keeper
CR get a shot off....straight at Peter's boy
England wore red vs Colombia and Sweden both wearing yellow
England are wearing white today. They second color is blue and that is the other color of the Ukes
The atmosphere is pretty dead in this one. Apparently there are only 15,000 fans in the stadium and barely any from either Denmark or CR.
So England in white and Ukes in yellow?
Won't be that good in Rome either
Danes with another shot...saved
Oh - Denmark break and Damsgaard has a go on his own. Beaten away by the keeper.
Yes
Are England fans Brexited for this one, like Welsh fans were earlier?
No one from the homeland can go....mainland fans excepted to make up some numbers
That's what I thought.
Great cross...well finished!
2-0!!
GOAL! Great team goal from Danish finished off by Dolberg!
Putting in a good delivery....whoda thunk it
Dolberg had an odd reaction to scoring - I actually thought that the flag had gone up.
Big hole for the Czechs to dig out of now.
Kasper doing a Peter again!!
Prem winner
FA Cup winner
Euro winner?
Any idea what the England team will be today?
As I said, rumors are that Mount and Sancho are starting
Your new boy Sancho is apparently starting!
If you can believer the rumor...they always seem to be right
I hope that means that either Rice or Phillips is being rested.
He is really limping
I would think the Danes will hold off of a change until half
That's my thinking, too. Efan is surprised.
Well, Henderson wouldn't drop much quality. He can be trusted....just don't have him take a pen
HT
Danes halfway across the English Channel
All to play for in the second half now - the Czechs will have to go for it.
There is talk that Saka took a knock in training and won't play
Great scenes of the Danish fans celebrating near the Tower Bridge!
The Czechs are making two changes at the start of the second half. Jankto who we've seen already in this tournament on for Holes and Krmencik who hasn't featured yet coming on for legendary novelist Marcel Proust.
Crikey - Krmencik is straight into the action and fires a shot straight at Kasper.
Back from a trip to the loo
Czechs have started well....another save by Kasper
And now another shot on goal from the resulting corner. The Czech manager obviously gave them a kick up the arse in the dressing room.
GOAL!!!
Razor Boy gets another goal!!
GOAL! Patrik Schick gets his fifth goal of the tournament!
Tidy little finish!
2-1!
Great start from the CR
Schick's now level with Cristiano Ronaldo on five goals. No one picked him, of course.
Schick level with Ronaldo....well behind Owen Gola.
Of course, Kane will overtake them today
Let's hope Harry Kane scores five today to lead the Golden Boot race.
Great minds think alike
FROM THE BEEB
The talk of the press in Ukraine isn't particularly kind to England, though they point out Gareth Southgate's side are favourites.
Ukrainian website Sport.ua says they will be more “psychologically relaxed” than against Sweden and the team may benefit from being underestimated by their opponents.
“It will be good to punish the smug Brits” it says.
It goes on to add that the match is “unlikely to be enchanting due to the peculiarity of the current England squad, which puts its stake on pragmatism and defence…the game is likely to turn into football chess”.
Great minds think alike.
And again - LOL!
Denmark go forward for the first time in the half...they get a corner
The Ukrainians can stick it right up their jumpers.
Oompa Oompa
The Czechs look like a totally different side now.
Oh - Christiansen with a nice chip into the box and Coufal's header could have easily go in the top corner.
Hello Everyone. This has got to feel better for all you England fans. For the last 2.5 games, the Danes have looked imperious. Now the Czechs are giving them a game.
Welcome RD
Too much dribbling there from Braithwaite.
Thanks UWS. The Danes would make an interesting opponent for England. They have a lot of possession, while the Czechs would be ceding possession to England like they did in the first game.
30 minutes to go
Welcome, Alex - how's your weekend going?
Useless break from the Danes but they still manage to get a shot off that is blocked
Great block by Soucek to prevent Poulsen from scoring. And he took some studs in the shin from Poulsen's follow through. Down for treatment now.
The Czech player Czelusta is having to be helped off while Soucek has been bandaged up to continue.
Pretty well, BD. 3-day weekend. Today is rainy so it is work, and then tomorrow we will visit some friends for an afternoon BBQ. I am glad to be able to watch some games. I missed a lot of games during the week when I was at work, so I am glad to be here at home with the chance to watch at last some of the games.
Sounds like a good 4th of July weekend. Are you grilling tomorrow, Dave?
GEEZ.....he said it.....Derek Rae went 66 without saying it...but he got it in!!
It has certainly been an injury-rich tourney, but I have never seen two injuries in the same play.
Clearly, it is a big, long tourney at the end of domestic seasons that were delayed due to corona.
I need this to finish in regular time. I want to have a break for lunch in the build up.
I think we are grilling.
He's now said it twice in a minute
Lay-ver-kooosen?
Me too. I want to take the girls to the library.
Danes break...I think the pass was on
Oh - Poulsen with a nice breakaway but Vaclik was able to get down to his shot.
NO....the other L word
Schick had a weird season at Leverkusen. He had a hot start, then got injured and his replacement di really well, too for a few months. When Schick came back he was no longer sharp as a razor.
Alex - we've been critical of this commentator Derek Rae for his overly fussy pronunciation of players' and club team names. What's your take on him?
Oh - good block almost off the line by Kjaer.
Bad clearing header.....crosshot cleared....I thought Owen Gola was going to score there!
Corner comes to nothing
Here they go again....there is always a host nation!!
Host win often...so be it
Dangerous cross there....Schmeichel take it off the head... goal saving touch
I am amazed how much the Czechs cede the center of the pitch. They like to build things up on the wing and switch it left and right, but there is no intention to build up through the middle. I think that would be very good for England if the Czechs made it through.
Oh - Kasper took the ball right off Soucek's noggin.
I've noticed the same thing with the Ukraine side. They use the wingbacks - Zinkchenko particularly - to carry much of the attacking threat and the central midfielders are almost bypassed.
So many times in the modern game...players NEVER take the space given in front of them.....there is space....TAKE IT
Mount and Sancho start!!
Replacing Saka and Trippier
England XI: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Phillips, Mount, Sancho, Kane, Sterling.
Both Rice and Phillips starts
Still two defensive middies
Sancho....you're a United player....SHOW IT
Schick is off holding the back of his leg
Surprising move from the Czech manager. Schick is coming off after having scored his fifth goal of the season. The Burnley Bomber Vydra on for him.
I am glad we are not making changes because of a false sense of security
Danes could have wrapped it up
I think he had to shoot
I rarely hear Rae speak, since I don't have tv, thus, no espy.
I am watching these games through my computer, where I use a VPN that makes me look like I am in Germany, and that allows me to access the two public channels that showed about 80% of the games.
Back four rather than back five. Interesting. Gareth was worried about the German wingbacks Kimmich and Gosen, but apparently not as worried about them today. Walker vs. Zinchenko with be a battle.
That makes sense. Can you access the regular ABC network through your tv?
Yuck. Soucek is still bleeding
Krmencik picks up a yellow card for some dissent.
I hope the heat of Rome doesn't effect England too much
Terry Butcher's head bandage was tighter.
I hope the entire German officials won't take Tuesday personally
It's a Terry Butcher effort for Soucek today. The studs nicked his ear so it's going to continue to bleed even though it's not a threat to him.
I have an antennae, but it does not work too well, so no ABC.
More blood
These Czech players' heads puncture easily.
Into the last five minutes
That was a foul
Head over to a neighbor or a sports bar
I don't see this ref going through to the next round, especially after that corner that led to the early goal.
Ah - that's too bad. But I suppose your VPN will work for that one, too.
Why dive there!!
STUPID!
I agree - Kuypers will be back in Amsterdam after this one.
How many minutes will be added?
6 added minutes
Again...SOMETHING has to change with the clock
Six minutes to play now, largely because of that patch up job for Soucek.
I sm s native German speaker, so watching in German is no problem for me.
It seems like the Czechs are played out. Too many subs, so the flow is gone.
So inconsistent
Denmark have 4 minutes to hold on
I know teams want to hold on to their lead...but why stop putting pressure on the other team
Shot well over
Maybe one more chance?
I think there will be a lot of extra time.
I agree - they had a spark of life at the beginning of this half but the Danes have hung on well.
Danes corner flagging it...hate that too
90 seconds
If the Danes hold on, they certainly have been brought back down to earth. On their form from the two previous games, I felt more confident about their chances against England. Maybe they need their fans.
Shot....riffled wide
Oh - close call there for Denmark!
Efan is right....too deep
Kasper to kick away... 15 secs to go
The home crowd and the Christian Eriksen factor was huge for them in the last match.
That's it - Denmark are into the semi-final on Wednesday at Wembley!
I'm off to fix lunch - back in a bit.
THAT IS IT
DENMARK HAVE MADE IT TO WEMBLEY!!
COME ON ENGLAND.....JOIN THEM!!
First three quarter finals
The "away" team has won them all
Away team for the fourth match.....England
Nice shot.
I'm too nervous to eat
Again, I won't be commenting as much
I want to concentrate on the match
Saka, James and White are the three that miss out
I'm back for the big one. Come on, England!
COME ON ENGLAND
COME ON ENGLAND
COME ON ENGLAND
Only ten shots total for England.... we need to double that today
The full team news out of Rome:
Ukraine: Bushchan, Zabarnyi, Kryvtsov, Matviyenko, Karavayev, Sydorchuk, Shaparenko, Zinchenko, Mykolenko, Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk.
Subs: Sobol, Sudakov, Stepanenko, Marlos, Pyatov, Makarenko, Tsygankov, Bezus, Zubkov, Trubin, Tymchyk, Dovbyk.
England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Phillips, Rice, Sancho, Mount, Sterling, Kane.
Subs: Grealish, Henderson, Rashford, Trippier, Ramsdale, Mings, Coady, Calvert-Lewin, Foden, Chilwell, Johnstone, Bellingham.
Referee: Felix Brych (Germany).
There is no way to be confident about this match
England have to prove it
Teams in the tunnel
As I said, Ukes in all yellow
Great....England wearing blue shorts!!!
Don't underestimate the Ukes!
They are out on the pitch first
Here comes England
GSTQ sung with gusto
Steve has Phil Milton and John Menditto with him for the match today. They all say hi to everyone on the LOB.
Kane to score SIX
We are off
England players taking the knee there and there was some booing. And we're away. Come on, England!
England with their proper kit tonight - hope it's a good omen.
