Euro 2020/1 - Day 11
Morning, boys - I'm back in the saddle here at the Cottage for the Group B and Group C action today. We start with the last matches in Group B - Netherlands v. North Macedonia and Ukraine v. Austria. Netherlands will win the group and the Macedonians are headed home but second place is still up for grabs.
After that Group C wraps up at 3pm, with Belgium v. Finland and Denmark v. Russia. This group is a bit more interesting, as Belgium are through but the other three sides are still in it. Should be a fascinating day at Euro 2020/1. Join me, won't you?

Team news for the one in Amsterdam:
North Macedonia (4-2-3-1): Dimitrievski; Ristovski, Velkovski, Musliu, Alioski; Ademi, Bardhi; Trajkovski, Elmas, Trickovski; Pandev.
Netherlands (3-5-2): Stekelenburg; Dumfries, De Vrij, De Ligt, Blind, Van Aanholt; De Jong, Wijnaldum, Gravenberch; Depay, Malen.
Morning/Afternoon Bob
I am here. I think I'll have the Austria/Ukraine match on the telly and the Nether/NoMa on my lap top
And for the one that actually matters:
Ukraine (a Milanese 4-3-3): Bushchan; Mykolenko, Matviyenko, Zabarnyi, Karavayev; Zinchenko, Sydorchuk, Shaparenko; Malinovskiy, Yaremchuk, Yarmolenko. Subs: Pyatov, Trubin, Sobol, Sudakov, Kryvtsov, Stepanenko, Marlos, Makarenjo, Tsygankov, Besedin, Tymchyk, Dovbyk.
Austria (a lesser-spotted Weihnachtsbaum): Bachmann; Lainer, Dragovic, Hinteregger, Alaba; Schlager, Laimer, Grillitsch; Baumgartner, Sabitzer; Arnautovic. Subs: Schlager, Pervan, Ulmer, Posch, Ilsanker, Gregoritsch, Lienhart, Trimmel, Schaub, Schöpf, Onisiwo, Kalajdzic.
That's the same for me, mate. Welcome.
I hope these two make a go for it instead of drawing and then hoping that they both go through.
So, after yesterday's matches, so far we've got Wales booked for a Saturday lunchtime fixture against the team that finishes second in this group and Italy for the afternoon match against the team that finishes second in Group C this afternoon.
What did you think of the Ampadu red card yesterday. There was a lot of chatter online about how unfair it was but I thought it was justified. He stamped on the bloke's foot!
Bad boy Arnautovic back in the fold today after insulting our Gjanni's mum - naughty.
We are off on the telly
And we're away!
And slightly behind on line in Amserdam
Schlager burst through there and laid off to Lainer who should have shot first time. Poor first touch.
Shame that both teams could settle for a draw and still qualify
I guess I'm watching Arsenal vs Leeds here!!
Austria with a bright start here - they need the win.
Good start from the Austrians. The ball has gone in a dangerous area a couple of time
Handball called
Yarmolenko races through now - I'm liking how these two teams are going at each other. I doubt whether Holland can be bothered today.
Is there every a match that Derek Rae commentates that won't have anything to do with the Bundesliga and Liiiipzeeg
A draw wouldn't be a disaster for them
Ever not every... I am a numpty
Looks like David Alaba might have some space to operate today. This one seems really open.
Both Ukraine and Austria have 0 GD but Uk has scored 4 and let in 4 and Aus has scored 3 let in 3
I know that's true but I'm hoping that they ignore that and have a go.
You're right - that Rae is obsessed with Leipzig and Leverkusen. Does he do Bundesliga commentary for ESPN?
No Ma nets... late flag up...I think VAR will look at it
It doesn't count
Shame
Again, they do it so much better than the Prem
I for one want England to win the group and take on the runner up in the Group of Death(could be Hungary)
They would be in the much preferred side of the draw. No France, Italy or Belgium
It looks like England have second almost wrapped up anyway. They would have to lose and and Scotland win and a swing of 3 goals
Not a lot happening in the Dutch match - I'd love to see Gjanni and co. get a result, just to upset their applecart a bit.
Both teams are attacking
That's my feeling too - top of the group. We're going to have to beat the big boys at some point. Bring them on.
With England pretty much assured of second....ATTACK!!
Looks like if England win the group and Spain don't get their fingers out....England could have Hungary/Germany, Sweden, Netherland.... then the final
I'm really hoping that Gareth puts out a really attacking side and they go for it. I'm sick of the anti-English stuff in the media. They weren't that bad!
Runner up of the this group will play at Wembley against the Italians
The Dutch will take the 3rd place team of England or Spain group
They were so slow and negative
They didn't try and score!
I agree, we got a draw and are going to qualify but I don't see how you can be happy with that performance
GOAL... the Austrian have taken the lead!!
Ukraine now in third. Most groups will have a 4 point team!
Wahay! That Baumgartner goal will definitely shake things up a bit. Austria now second!
No Ma hits the woodwork
Now then we've got a match on our hands. Ukraine can't just rely on other groups' results.
3rd placed teams
Group A
Switzerland 4 points -1....DONE
Group B
Russ 3, Fin 3, Den 0...who knows how that will end up. Finns probably will not get anything from Belgium so the third place is 3
Group C
Ukraine 3
Group D
Croatia/Scot prob 4
Group E
Spain 2
Group F
Germ/Por 3...Hung 4?
Holland score...NoMa wants a foul...VAR is checking
It counts
EVERYTHING VAR does is so much better than in the Premier League
Barca's D3.14 with the Dutch goal
Nice finish from your old friend.
Don't like that the Dutch are doing so well. My smug Dutch colleague will be having a go at me if England play badly tomorrow.
If the score stays the same and Ukraine stay on 3....that would take up one of the non-qualifying 3rd place teams if you get to 4 points
Both teams in Amsterdam are getting chances
Looks like the goalscorer Baumgartner is going to have to come off.
Austria have to make the change. The goal scorer has to come off with head injury
I still don't quite understand how they assign the Best Third Place teams to the various matches, do you?
I am enjoying both games... the teams are going FORWARD
Rae should be banned from all Germanesque matches
The Dutch never replace Donny VDB in the squad
Gillmour out with COVID for the Scots. Self isolate for 10 days
Dembele out of the Euros with the knee injury he had yesterday...maybe is off to Elland Road to sign a contract
Or get a signed Bamford shirt
I'm take Billy at ER - he can leave the Covid behind, mind you.
Austria made quite a few chances when they played England at the Riverside
Dembele is the Leeds fan!
Both of these matches have been brilliant.
Sorry - I remembered that right after I wrote that. I'd definitely have Dembele at ER.
Did you see the National Conference Play off Final result?
Hartlepool were taking on Torquay
Torquay's keeper scored a 95th minute equalizer!
Went to pens
Both teams missed their first two kicks.... Hartlepool finally won 5-4 on pens
Jeff Stelling was thrilled
Arno misses a glorious chance
Oh - Bad Boy Arnautovic should have made it 2-0. That was Gjanni's mum getting her revenge.
I hadn't seen that result - I'm delighted for Jeff. He's a long suffering Hartlepool fan.
Another Austrian chance!!
First guy slipped
Arno was rubbish
Arnautovic with yet another chance! Fluffed his lines again.
Another Austrian chance....why pass it off!!
Half time in Amsterdam
1-0 the hosts
HT in the telly match
1-0 Austria....could have been more
Half-time - Austria go in 1-0 up and should have had more. They're current on track to meet Wales at 12pm on Saturday.
If Finland lose to Belgium, then England will have qualified.
That would make the first two groups runners up only with 3 points. That would also mean that the winner of Scotland/Croatia would be in as well
Not first two groups but B and C
Italy play the winner of our match at Wembley
Wales play in Amsterdam vs Austria
I typed that wrong!
Italy will play Austria
Wales will play the r/u in the latter matches
We're back on for the second half now.
FA has announced that Chillwell and Mount are isolating.
They have all been tested but will isolate
Will miss the CR match
That is big news
I thought Italy got the Group C second place team - am I wrong?
Italy would get Austria...I corrected myself
Wales play the runner up of the late group of today
Saved off the the line by NoMa
You don't seem to be fussed by the news
I'd like to see another Austrian goal
Winnie doubles the Dutch lead
I just responded on your text about that news. Might be good for us - Grealish to start for sure.
Two players with new clubs have scored today for the Dutch
Barca's new man and PSG's new man
Again, if qualification is assured this afternoon.....SGate needs to go all out and win....nothing to lose
Watch SGate put in Rice, Hendo and Phillips....all three defensive players
I figured out my mistake - this is Group C. I don't why they keep playing these matches out of sequence. Very confusing.
This laying down in the wall is ridiculous....should be banned
I hope not - I wouldn't be surprised if he played Rice and Phillips again, though. Grealish in for Mount. I hope he gives Kane a rest - he looks like he's carrying an injury to me. Well off the pace. Why not throw DCL into the fray?
Nice effort...saved
It doesn't bother me - it's trying to combat the cheeky KDB under the wall efforts.
I hope he plays Kane but keeps him pushed up... and have him score FOUR and overtake Owen Gola
Three nil to the Dutch
Winnie with a Brace
Austria break....what an atrocious pass!!
Nice move by the Dutch for the goal
Dutch running riot now - Winnie with a brace. It believe that he's onto three goals now - level with Ronaldo and Schick.
If Russia get a point vs Denmark, they will finish as runners up if Finland lose to Belgium
If Denmark win and Finland lose, there will be three teams on 3 points...it will go down to GD. David said it would be GD between the teams match and not counting the Belgium games
Winnie inches from a hat-trick
Austria will be kicking themselves if they concede a goal now - they've had so many chances!
Again, for England's sake, we need an Austrian win here
I know that no one picked Winnie for the first hat-trick!
Not that it really matters... England will win 5-0 tomorrow
I just woke up....I must have been dreaming
How does this impact England?
Memphis has gone off so he won't be adding to his goal tally today.
If Austria win and Finland lose than Group B and C third place teams would only have 3 points. So any team with 4 points will automatically qualify
Dutch hit the crossbar....rampnant
Marlos on for Ukraine now - Brazilian born but naturalized Ukrainian.
Goran Pandev going off to a great ovation now from the Macedonian crowd.
Good news for the Scots and Croatians
Group B and C 3rd places teams are not done tho
Group F 3rd place might have only 3
Groue E could have 3 or less
Group D could have 4 or 2
Group A has 4
Group B 3 or 4
NoMa hit the net again....LATE flag again
Looks like he's off
I know they want to let the play end and then call it so VAR can check but some are so obvious
For England, I would play Grealish and Sancho
Grealish for Mount and Sancho for Sterling
Ukraine still have it in them to nick a late goal, which would put them back in the automatic slot to meet Italy.
Sancho hasn't impressed me. I'd prefer Sterling or Rashford.
Sancho hasn't had a kick
He was successful in the Bundesliga ...please pronounce like Derek
Holland have had a good tourney... a bad five minutes or so vs Ukraine but the rest of the time...looking good
I mean in earlier matches for England.
Ten minutes left the Austrians to qualify
Sterling has 15 goals in 63 matches, Rashford has 12 in 43 matches, Sancho has 3 goals in 19 matches.
Austria trying to be too tricky around the box
Interesting facts
It's looking increasingly unlikely that Ukraine will get out of this group, and they don't really deserve to progress. You'd much prefer to see three teams out of Group F than in this one.
I would so love a Hungarian win vs Germany...no one is giving them a chance!
That would be so good for England!
Goup B's 3rd will probably on be on 3 so that group and this one could be the two groups with only two qualifying
Oh - there's the danger. Yemenchuk nearly blasts one in on the turn. Just wide.
That makes sense to me, too.
If they were playing in Budapest, I'd give them a chance but not playing in Munich.
I know.... but....Germany just lost in a WC qualifying match at home to the mugs we are watching in Amsterdam
One of 3 added minutes gone for the Austrians
4 added in Holland
Flag up... relief for the Mountain Men
That is true - I didn't really expect that performance they put on against Portugal.
Almost over for Ukraine.
The Ukes would really want a draw at Hampden tomorrow!
Kick it out...stupid clearance!!
GET IT OUT!!
That's it - Austria are into the Round of 16!
Now the Austrians break....that will take time
It is over
Austria have qualified!!
Great news for England, Scotland and Croatia
Over in Amsterdam
I am off to eat
I'll be back for the first half of the late one
Good afternoon , Bob and Dave. Back for Group B after getting a spot of lunch
Good afternoon David
So, what has been already decided
Group A
Winner...Italy.... next up.... Austria at Wembley
R/U....Wales....next up R/U of GB...in Amsterdam
3rd Swiss...almost in
Group C
Winner....Holland...next up...3rd of D/E...in Hungary
R/U...Austrai...next up...Italy at Wembley
Hiya, David - welcome!
On we go to Group B then. Let’s have a look at The Permutations.
Russia win! They go through. Denmark are out. Easy.
A draw! Russia go through in second spot as long as Finland don’t spring a surprise and beat Belgium. Denmark are out. So far, so straightforward
Denmark win! Now it gets interesting. Finland would be through in second spot with a draw (or top if they beat Belgium) while the more likely defeat would leave three teams on three points. In that scenario a 1-0 win for Denmark would put the head-to-head table all square on goal difference and goals scored, so the goal difference against Belgium would come back into play – bad news for Russia, but obviously dependent on the Finland-Belgium score line. A two-goal win (or more) for Denmark would put them through, while a 2-1 win would also be enough, as would a 3-2 and so on, because that would elevate both these sides above the Finns on goals scored in their head-to-head triumvirate, and then their results against Belgium would come back into play to separate Denmark and Russia.
Group B
Nothing is decided
Belgium/Finland
Belgium win/draw...win the group
Finland win and Russia loss...win the group a draw would qualify
Russia are runners up if they win OR draw and Finland loss
Denmark are runners up if they by a 2 goal margin and Finland lose
If Finland lose, all teams on 4 points will qualify
The team new for the match in St. Petersburg:
Russia (3-4-3): Safonov; Diveev, Dzhikiya, Kudryashov; Mario Fernandes, Ozdoez, Zobnin, Kuzyaev; Miranchuk, Dzyuba, Golovin.
Denmark (3-4-4): Schmeichel; Christensen, Kjaer, Vestergaard; Wass, Hojbjerg, Delaney, Maehle; Braithwaite, Poulsen, Damsgaard.
So Denmark are unchanged from the side against Belgium. For Russia Fyodor Kudryashov replaces Dmitri Barinov.
And the line-up for the other one:
Finland: Hradecky; O’Shaughnessy, Arajuuri, Toivio; Uronen, Kamara, Lod, Sparv, Raitala; Pukki, Pohjanpalo
Subs: Joronen, Jaakkola, Väisänen, Taylor, Jensen, Schüller, Soiri, Alho, Kauko, Valakari, Ivanov, Forss
Belgium: Courtois; Vermaelen, Denayer, Boyata; Chadli, De Bruyne, Witsel, Trossard; Doku, Lukaku, Eden Hazard
Subs: Mignolet, Sels, Vertonghen, Tielemans, Carrasco, Mertens, Meunier, Vanaken, Dendoncker, Beteken, Batshuayi, Praet
Good Afternoon,Bob and Dave . Glad to be around for the Group B matches.
I just heard on 5Live that there are certain number of result that could mean advancement would be on yellow cards
I'll have the Denmark game on the telly and Belgium on the computer
Teams in the tunnel now.
YLNWA being sung in Denmark!
Out come the teams
Denmark have had the most shots than any other team in the tournament....they've scored once!
I'll be watching both matches on the PIP but focusing on the Belgium v. Finland match hoping that the Finns can pull off a miracle win.
Belgium in all read
Finland in all white with their cross
I have Denmark vs Russia on the telly and Belgium vs Finland on Plus
I want the Belgians to win
They would be on the half of the draw if England win the group
Stick them in the same side as France and Italy
Most of the Belgians not singing their anthem.
I want them knocked out!
They've already qualified
Russia wearing red
Danes in white
Most of the fans wearing red.....rooting for white
One Finnish starters plays in Belgium but none of the Belgian starters do
Belgium not resting players - this is their first team!
I know - I mean that I want them to finish second and get knocked out in the Round of 16, rather than getting an easy match.
Daniel O'Shaughnessy playing for Finland played for Cheltenham ion L2 , but is now at the Euros
They're off from Copenhagen and St. Pete
Wouldn't you love to see a Belgium v. Netherlands R16 match?
Dzuyba trying to impress Sean Dyche by Elbowing a player in the face while grabbing his jersey. Sounds like Ashley Barnes
Again, if Belgium win.... England, CR, Switzerland and the winner of Sco/Cro will be thru
No... wrong half of the draw
Italy to beat Belgium and France
Russia would have to win for Belgium to have any chance of Finnishing third and I really want Russia out. I'd rather them out than anyone else
Another name not expected in the Finn squad is Robert Taylor . Spent half a season with Abe Lincoln while they were in the Conference many years ago. Has worked his way up to the Euros
Come on, you Finns!
If Scotland vs Croatia is a draw I think both are out
Yes... but the winner would be thru...if Finland lose
Bob is in Bazaro World!!
Jeremy Doku was my "One to Watch" in this group.
Good that both teams need to win at Hampden
The Finns really pressing Belgium.
What's going on with Doku? I'm not familiar with him. An up and coming player?
Really hot here today and storms expected after...hope I don't lose power
I'd love to see it but I can't really see the Scots getting anything out of Croatia tomorrow.
I agree with Dave about the Hampden match tomorrow.
Croatia have not been that impressive but Scotland are the only team not to score yet
I agree, Bob. I think a draw is the best the Scots would do and if they can't win then at least eliminate coratia. COR!
Belgians doing nowt so far.
Oh - Teemu dwelt too long on the ball there.
Julie Foudy irked Craig Burley about the Scots not scoring and he was none too amused about that
This is Finland's first tourney
I wonder what took them so long to become better
Sweden have always been sneakily good
Norway and Denmark used to stink...then our boys took a helluva beating and now they are tourney norms
Why not Finland?
Hot here today too. We're under our first excessive heat advisory of the this Summer. Fortunately it's just today
I'm not sure why Finland. That's interesting . I know they're supposedly the most educated country in the world . Other than that and Winter sports I'm at a loss for an answer. That's my best guess
Come on Danes...be great
I understand about the winter sports but Norway and Denmark both improved in the mid 80s...not Finland
Both matches really scrappy
Oh - first real chance for Belgian - KDB threads a pass through to The Chunk. Offside.
Lukaku with a chance...wide...offside anyway
David...I think you meant both games are crappy
Those were just guesses, not actual responses . I don't have an actual answer as to why Finland haven't qualified
Russia break...shoots right at Kasper... professional... miss the third post!
Yes Dave . Both are crappy. That's correct
Both teams have had a chance. Russia and Belgium should have taken the lead in their respective matches
It is a mystery - all three countries have similar populations and demographics. Maybe there isn't the same footballing culture in Finland, I don't know.
