Euro 2020/1 - Day 9
Morning, chaps - this is the last big day at the Euro 2020/1 tournament, with three big matches throughout the day. Starting tomorrow, we have fewer and fewer matches heading toward the final on July 11. So, let's sit back and enjoy it all. We start with the currently World Champions, France, who were underwhelming in victory against Germany the other day. This morning, they've got the weakest member of the Group of Death, Hungary, as opponents.
That's followed by perhaps the match of the group and the round - Portugal v. Germany. The current European champions took a while to get going against Hungary but then exploded in the last fifteen minutes with three goals, including two for Ronaldo. The Germans lost narrowly to France and can't afford to lose again today.
Finally, at the end of the day, we've got Spain, former World and European Champions, who stumbled against Sweden in their opener and now need a win against the Poles to get going in this tournament. Join me for all the fun today, eh?

Morning Boys
Hope you guys are doing well
I am still very bummed about yesterday's performance.I know a draw would qualify us and a win would win the group but you are playing Scotland at Wembley....TRY!
First 0-0 at Wembley EVER!!!
The pundits are rewriting history this morning to suggest that France's win against Germany was impressive. It wasn't. In reality, they won off an own goal from their only real chance of the match. They must do better against lowly Hungary tonight.
Hungary (3-3-2-2) Gulacsi; Botka, Orban, Attila Szalai; Nego, Nagy, Fiola; Kleinheisler, Schafer; Adam Sallai, Sallai.
Substitutes: Dibusz, Bogdan, Lang, Kecskes, Cseri, Holender, Lovrencsics, R Varga, Siger, K Varga, Nikolic, Schon.
France (4-3-3) Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Digne; Pogba, Kante, Rabiot; Griezmann, Benzema, Mbappe.
Substitutes: Mandanda, Maignan, Lenglet, Lemar, Giroud, Dembele, Tolisso, Sissoko, Hernandez, Dubois, Kounde, Thuram.
Referee Michael Oliver (England)
These pundits just make things up!
Two facts about Griezmann for ya....
He will be starting his 51st match in a row for France
He has three kids....all different ages....all born on April 8th
Morning, Dave. I'm not feeling as bad. England could and should have won that match 2-0 or 3-0. It was a matter of inches. I didn't think that they played that badly or that differently from the other teams that have won their matches.
We'll see what France make of Hungary this morning. If they romp it 8-0 then I'll worry about England, but I remember at Euro 96 that England drew against the Swiss in the opener and then won narrowly against Scotland at Wembley in the second match. It was only in third group match against Holland that they exploded.
I'll bet that Griezmann's kids hate having to share a birthday.
Hi Bob, I guess everyone sees things differently. I just hate how slow and lethargic England looked. So many passes in the wrong direction at a snail's pace
Not good enough
BOTH teams not wearing mono color!!
Hungary wearing what I remember their kit to be... Red, white and green
France in white shirts and blue shorts
Apparently UEFA have received a report about a homophobic banner among the Hungarian crowd today. There's no need for that nonsense. Hungary may get a sanction.
Again, everyone is saying great things about Portugal. They scored a goal(offside) and were scoreless for 84 minutes
Time for tape recorder up your nose
I have my Hungarian translation book with me too
It is a good national anthem to sing....if I knew French
LOL! Great sketch!
A really frantic version of it, as if the Hungarians want to get it done as quickly as possible.
Apparently, the French players have decided not to take the knee this morning - shame they've been bullied out of that.
It is hot in Budepest... unlike Wembley for the Croatia game.... and there was a lot of whining for that match
"Do you want to come back to my place - bouncy bouncy?"
We are off
hahaha
Hungarians trying to get started quickly.
France get an early free kick
Leeds boss gets a mention
Uh oh... Darke and Robson doing their Rae impersonation wiht Griezmann
Varane with a bad foul there - could have been an early card. Hungarians can swing one in.
I'm off to help Kate with brekkies. Back in a tick.
Why wan't that a card?
Free kick is naff
Corner to the World Champs...doesn't beat the first man
Lunacy
Pavard with the first yellow... for a second offense
Not much of a foul there
Could be a dangerous free kick but it is modern day.... blocked before the front post!
Corner
Darke....it's not the Jules Rimet anymore
Two yellows and you miss a game
Wonder when they reset?
I know they did stop the second yellow in a semi didn't ban you from the Final
Both teams already have played more forward passes than England did
France with a shot... saved...Griezmann had to score...saved
Flag up anyway
According to UEFA, article 52, a player is suspended for the next match after picking up two yellow cards in separate games. So if a player were to be booked in both the first and second group stage game, he would be unavailable for the final group game.
UEFA also clarify that picking up four bookings in four separate games will result in a second suspension for players.
This means a booking in the opening two games followed by a booking in the round of 16 and quarter-finals would see you miss the semi-final.
After completion of the quarter-final round, single cautions will be wiped from the record meaning you can’t pick up a suspension for the final for a yellow card in the semi-final.
I'm back with brekkies now - France starting to play a bit but I'm still not impressed.
France have not bee that impressive so far BUT still a better performance than England
That is a foul...he was late
Glad there was no card
Drinks break
Pogba is fouled now setting France up for a dangerous free kick.
A Hungarian player is down - I didn't see what happened there.
Thanks for researching the yellow card issue - I was wondering when they would be wiped.
Looks like heat stroke for someone
Sallai is struggling off now. That's their captain off. Nikolic, who's had time in the MLS, is on for him.
Mpap into the wall
The sub that just came on.... hit right in the noggin
Oof - right in the mush. That's going to smart.
TT would go on for 10 minutes about getting hit in the head
My lot get a mention
I had one right in the knackers from a free kick once - boy, did that hurt.
Great move by the French.... Benza hits one wide
What kind of finish was that....side foot it in!!
Right in the meat and two veg? OUCH
Oh - great move from the French. Excellent move from Mbappe and he laid it off superbly. Benzema fluffed his lines.
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Just woke up and here to join you for the matches
Good move by Mpap.... hits one wide
England....are you watching.... take a man on!!
Another nice French move and Mbappe shoots wide. Hungary starting to be under the cosh
Now Mbappe jinks through a couple but scuffs his shot wide. They're knocking on the door now, for sure.
I hate how they are saying it is hard to take on teams sitting back! You have to have players that want to take players on. You can beat one man one on one and another one will show up but he had to come from somewhere...you've created space
Ball movement doesn't create space all the time. The defenders just slide over
TAKE A MAN ON
Morning David
Good morning , Dave
The Hungarian are sitting back now... but the French are attacking!
Pogba hits the side netting
Pogs tries one at the near post - finds the side netting. All France now.
Into the side netting by Pogba. Wave after wave of French attacks, but they need to test the keeper
Shame ABC gets a Spain game... it will be a borefest again
I'll be watching the US Open too
The Hungarian fouls are starting to build up now.
Agreed. The late one will be borefest. Hard to predict , but maybe 1-0 to Spain
The fouls will continue until the ref starts booking them. Not exactly the mighty Magyars of '54.
The Magyars just trying to hang on until the interval now.
Benzema looks as out of sorts as Kane did yesterday.
Morning, David - great to have you on board. How's your Saturday morning going?
Stupid foul but it wasn't much of one....Prem Ref calls a foul because a player hit the ground
Kimpebe grabbed be fellow French born Loic Nego
Hungary break...shot.... blocked by teammate
Sallai with a rare Humgaryb shot and it comes off his own teammate for a goal kick. Not pleased about that
A draw really doesn't help Hungary because they will need a win in Munich to advance. This team doesn't seem built to attack
Thanks, Bob. Still half asleep. I miust have been tired because I slept in late
If England had played like this and it was still 0-0, I would have been ok with it
A quintet of stoppage time minutes . Where did all that time come from?
GOAL!!!!!!!
HUNGARY TAKE THE LEAD!!!
Oh my goodness! Hungary have scored!!!!
What a great time to score, too!
GOAL !!! FIOLA GIVES THE MAGAYARS A SHOCK LEAD AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY
There was a couple of injuries and a drinks break
Just when I was about to type in response to David's comment that Hungary would be happy with a draw, they've scored!
What was VAR checking?
It counts
The Hungarians were close to taking the lead vs Portugal as well
Long goal kick headed back then Bristol City's Nagy played the ball wide left to Fiola , who played a one two with Sallai and then got behind the out of position Pavard and beat LLoris at the near post
Stop falling down
Thanks for the clarification, Dave. Looks a warm day in Budapest
Half time
The host lead!!
The latest news from Budapest is that the cross field pass from Bristol City's Adam Nagy was not idle gossip
Wow! Attila Fiola has just assured that he never has to by a drink again in Budapest.
Half-time.
The Viola is playing as Hungary is surprisingly one yup at the half against the run of play thanks to that stoppage time goal
The cross field ball from Bristol City's Adam Nagy was not idle gossip
I still think the French will easily win
I am loving this scoreline right now. That Hungarian goal sets up the second half really well.
The only problem with the score is that Hungary will be even more determined to sit back , especially with their Italian manager and his tactics
Ready for the second half
The players are coming back out for the second half. This should be absorbing.
Will France become the second team of this tournament to come from behind to win?
Ian Darke gives King Eric a mention as he scored the winner in France's only win in Budapest
Second half underway
I picked Hungary to go thru
And we're away in this second half. They're saying that the Hungarian captain Sallai who want off in the first half suffered a concussion, so he'll be out for the final group match against Germany.
Danube.... separates Buda and Pest
Nice geography knowledge, mate!
Pogba rifles one across punched away
Pogba rifles one on goal and it's punched away.
Cross from Pogbaa pushed away by a diving Gulasci then the rebound is blocked.More French attacking
Thank you... I just remember seeing some show...could have been Rick Steves.... Buda...and over there... Pest
Now France wins a corner
Corner headed away then an atrocious cross from Griezmann
Nice one , Dave. Not sure of the reference, but like the sound of it
oooh...the pass almost got out to a wide open man on the left
Pogba tries another shot but slips - he looks frustrated already.
Long range shot from Pogba not too far off. He shows his frustration
Botka picks up a yellow there for going straight through Mbappe.
Botka booked for a cynical foul
Kimpebe called for a foul on Sallai
Player falls down and whistle goes
I hate that crap
That really was a soft call that end a Hungarian attack
Sean Dyche should be in attendance. Half the Magyar players would be a good fit for his team
Olly warming up for the French.
I was just listening to an interview with Rick Steves about how his business has been affected by Covid.
They definitely do have a Championship battler kind of profile, don't they?
He must be hurting
Dembele on for Rabiot now - like for like. Deschamps isn't quite rolling the dice yet with more than half an hour.
Dumb Belly on for Adrian Rabiot
Dembele is a Leeds United fan!!!!
Wow - Dembele is a big Leeds fan! Well, then - Elland Road awaits!
Hungarian fans loving it!
Rabiot had had a quiet tournament . Not surprised to see him coming off. Olly could be a good option against the physical Hungarian defense
One problem with the modern day game
Big club sides are more of an All Star team than a national team
Does Bielsa know about that?
He must not be the smartest tool in the shed
Leeds fan with a decent effort off the post
Oh - Dembele straight into the action and has a go. Hits the outside of the post!
In stant impact as Dumb Belly goes win a run , turns tow defenders then his shot comes off the outside off the post
LOL, Dave. Nice one!
Oh - Kleinheisler got to the by-line and nearly found the striker with his cross. Good period here for the Magyars.
Hungary are not just sitting back
Then why did you point it our Ian?
Past the hour mark and the Magyars still one up
Stuart Robson put Ian in his place, but that's his actual name
Can't afford to be too patient.....are you listening Gareth?
Verane does well to stop Hungary counter ,but a sloppy clearance the resembles one of mine
Worthless cross from Griezmann. They look really out of sorts now - even worse than in the first half.
What were you saying about England now, Dave?.....
Pavard again now. Could well have been a second yellow there.
England hasn't even conceded a goal yet. Could they have a marquee match vs France in the Sweet Sixteen?
Free kick chance for the Hungarians now.
Pavard has been uncharacteristically poor. Normally really reliable
GOAL! Griezmann saves French bacon.
GOAL !!! GRIEZMANN TIES IT UP. FIRST MISTAKE IN THE MAGYAR BACKL LINBE ANBD FRANCE CAPITALIZES. HUNGARY PUNISHED FOR SITTING BACK TOO MUCH
Goal... Griezmann get the equalizer!
I stand by my England comments.... France have still played better than England(even before the goal)..... what a shocker.... a long ball being dangerous
SNOBS
Route 1 from Lloris and Mbappe did brilliantly. When Orban tried to clear Griezmann made no mistake.
1-1
Really? I think you're suffering from pundititis. Everything England do is rubbish, everything French is brilliant. The reality is the French struggled to beat a weak German side and are now struggling against probably the weakest team in the tournament.
Dave will be pleased as this was the first time France went route one and were rewarded. It came off another rare Hungary attack as did their goal . Lloris caught a free kick from Sallai and his long punt found MBappe as French born Nego and willy Orban misjudged the punt, then Mbappe's pass was poorly cleared by Schaffer allowing an easy tap in for Griezmann
Cooling break now.
Time for drinkies after Griezmann volleyed a pass from Mbappe wide
On the replay, it looked like Mbappe controlled it with his arm. Got lucky there.
As things stand France close to qualifying and Hungary with a must win in Munich just to have any chance of qualifying from third place.
Should have been a foul there for Griezmann but Michael Oliver played advantage.
Scotland the first ever NL qualifier to get a draw and to keep a clean sheet in a Euros.
France in an identical situation as England now - four points from the first two matches and will qualify. But the third match is tougher than England's.
You cannot say England played well! You can't say the were positive, played on the front foot, played fast paced, played going forward
Excuse the language but Debs just sent this to me...it says it all
https://www.instagram.com/p/CQTdOu_KKWQ/?utm_medium=share_sheet
I'm not saying that. They played like all of the modern sides play - all possession and very little dynamism. But you can't say that France or Belgium or Spain or Portugal have been any better.
Another French change. The last one seemed to help. Will this one?
Tommy Cseri on for Schaeffer and for France Toulisso on for Pogba. Olly for Benzema . Biot French changes like for like
LOL! Nice one, Dave!
The French don't really look like they want to win this one now. They only wanted to avoid an embarrassing loss.
So funny...the guy called the dive coming!!!
Ratings for England from Sky
Pickers 8
James 5
Stones 6
Mings 8
Shaw 7
Phillips 6
Rice 5
Mount 6
Foden 5
Sterling 6
Kane 3
Hungarians probably happy about a point, too. It keeps their hopes alive going into that last match against Germany.
Actually not funny....very sad
The vid shows how the ball could have gone out wide and cross to go into the box
I think those are fair. I'd like to see Kane rested for the Czech match - DCL to start. Maybe Rashford too.
Mpap with a shot...well saved
Into the last ten minutes
Oh - Mbappe was in there but somehow the keeper kept it out!
Back from a trip to the bog and still 1-1
This is a dangerous time for the Hungarians - they crumbled against Portugal.
This is the point where Hungary fell apart against Portugal and conceded the first of their three goals
Inside the last ten minutes now. Another water break while some subs are coming on.
Lovrenscics oon for Kleinheisler
A quiz question. Hungarian keeps, Gulasci and Adam Bogdan, and Welsh keeper Danny Ward, all have what in common
Mbappe failed to part the Red Sea with that pass
Did they all play for Cardiff City?
I guess Hungary is banking on beating Germany as they seem to be settling for a draw
Right idea , but wrong team.
Leeds man off!!
That didn't last long! He was dangerous!
That's odd - the sub Dembele is coming off again. Still no Giroud. Deschamps doesn't seem that bothered.
The sub subbed as Lem,ar on for Dumb Belly. It must be some type of injury
Swansea
I guess Deschamps figures France is through with a draw vs Portugal
Two of the 90 to go
A Big Head needs a goal...there will be plenty of time to be added
He's off to Elland Road!
Sorry, Dave. Think higher up the English footie pyramid
I'm thinking about half a dozen stoppage time minutes
Sallai down for Hungary . I think he's time wasting
Southgate was probably thinking the same thing yesterday. We may not like it but that's how these managers think through these big tournaments.
4 added minutes
Only a Barber Shopr quartet off stoppage time minutes? I've seen more given for fewer stoppages
Sorry, I've just noticed that Ollie Giroud has come on. Not that he's done anything.
Ian says it's a precious point for Hungary. It's meaningless if they fail to defeat Germany
