Euro 2020/1 - Day 8
Happy Friday, everyone! It's England time again. We start off today with a couple of undercard matches from Group D and E to get us prepared for the Home Nations match-up with the Auld Enemy. We start with Slovakia and Sweden. The Swedes got a very serviceable draw against group favorites Spain earlier in the week, while Slovakia did over a weak Polish side. With a win this morning, either side can book their berth in the Round of 16.
That's followed by the other match-up in England's group, with the Croatian trying to bounce back from that loss to England as they take on a Czech side that, thanks to two-goal Patrick Schick, defeated Scotland in the first match on Monday.
Then at 3pm, it's the big one. England v. Scotland. England are clearly the superior side but the Scots are always up for a derby match with their neighbors to the south. It should be an absorbing day at Euro 2020/1 - join me.

Morning Boys
I am already ready for the late game of the day!! AGAIN, I have changed my routine for watching my team... I have an England shirt already on!
There are rumors that both Reece James and Luke Shaw will play as the two full-backs. Not sure if Grealish will get the start. I hope he comes on at one point!!
I was thinking about the permutations for today. I think England can qualify for the next round but not win the group.
If England win and Croatia win then England will have 6 points and then next 2 will 3. That would mean Croatia couldn't catch us and a draw vs the CR would win the group
The Teams for the First Match
Sweden: Olsen; Lustig, Lindelof, Danielson, Augustinsson; Larsson, Olsson, Ekberg, Forsberg; Berg, Isak
Subs: Bengtsson, Claessen, Cajuste, Helander, Johnsson, Jansson, Krafith, Kulusevski, Nordveldt, Quaison, Sema, Svensson
Slovakia: Dubravka; Pekarik, Satka, Skriniar, Hubocan; Kucka, Hrosovksy; Koscelnik, Hamsik, Mak; Duda
Subs: Benes, Bozenik, Duris, Gregus, Hancko, Haraslin, Hromada, Kuciak, Lobotka, Rodak, Valjent, Weiss
Refere: D Siebert (Germany)
The Swedes are unchanged from the Spain match
The Slovaks have made two changes
Group E Standings
Slovakia 3pts
Spain 1
Sweden 1
Poland 1
Love to see a Polish win tomorrow afternoon!!
Morning, Dave! Great to have you on board for England-Scotland Day.
As with yesterday, I'll be in and out during the first match, taking care of a few work details. I'll be back full time for the Czech v. Croatia match.
Teams are coming out
I'd love to see Spain fail again, too.
Poor form from a Dahlgren when the Swedes are playing
Take care
Good Morning, Bob and Dave. Here to join you for the matches, but will be thinking about the match from Wembley
LOL, Dave! I agree with you that I thought this would be a big match for the Dahlgren
Sweden wearing their traditional yellow AND blue shorts!
Slovakia in all white
Morning David
Us non-Swedes here to watch
Spain yet again got stuck in a weak group. They always seem to
Already fed up with them talking about the Spanish 'domination'.... possession means crap
They're off from St. Pete
Totally agree....if they could lose to Poland tomorrow would be great and they would be in trouble!
So many commentators over and I guess in today's game in all...think they need so many facts.... just commentate....enough is going on
OK.... the didn't LOSE!!!
They got just as much out of the game as Spain did... and they could have won it. I remember two big chances
I think Hamsik is overrated as a player and past his peak. In the past two seasons has played in China, then after the March break this year played half a dozen matches with Gothenburg and was signed by Turkish club Trabzonspor in June. Not exactly in demand by big clubs
Very rainy in England today
Normally that would be an advantage for England not playing in hot weather but the slop....but we are playing the Jocks
I agree. For all their possession, Spain didn't have a huge number of changes. They were really boring too. The announcers need to mention that too
Isak wins a Swedish corner
Horrible corner cleared by the first man
Useless first corner for the Scandinavians...modern day crap.
Based on the weather it may be like the England vs Scotland game sin the days of the Home Internationals. It will be interesting
What do you think is the best result for England in the next match?
People are talking about England coming second in the group is better but that is only for the R16 match
I think the road is better if we win
Play the runner up of Group of Death at Wembley
Play in Rome
Play at Wembley again
Before the match Chris Coleman mentioned that Slovakia knows how to work the refs. I'm starting to see it with all the falling down
I would want England to win the group. If they expect to win the tournament they will face a team as good a s Portugal at some time
If England wins their group and Germany finishes third then they could play each other in the semis at Wembley
This is the only match outside the UK today
Free kick at least beats the first man....weak header loops over the bar
Free kick headed over by Lustig
I know England will be wearing white shirts today. I think it will be all white vs all blue
I so wish they'd switch up the shorts
Good point
Wonder if it is raining in Scotland too
Not sure . If it's raining in Scotland then that might favor the Czechs even though Croatia should be used to the weather too.
Agreed. it would be nic e to see them wearing thew kits they did during the Home International matches
SO far it seems that Bob picked the correct match to miss
PLEASE stop talking about the Spain match!!!
Sweden wins a another corner . They need to do better with this one. This one better, but a waste as Sweden called for a push
Actually a dive as Isak never touched the player. Usually the German refs have solid matches , but this one has been conned a few times and too easily at that
Kris Olsson the first player booked and I think he had been warned so this one makes sense
The camera angle has been horrible at times because it's aimed right at the sun . Hard to see some of the action
Lindelof weight long throw duty. Do you want him to have that responsibility at United?
I may take Sparky walks five too ten minutes before halftime if this match doesn't improve
kris Olsson , already on a card commits a foul. He may be replaced at the half
Skrinjar takes the free kick and just to far as his outstretched teammate can't keep the ball in play
Not exactly as if brought down by a Man truck, but late by Seb Larsson
I am back after making myself a couple of pieces of English Toasting bread that they sell here
Sounds like the vast majority of supporters ion this stadium are from Sweden and that makes sense as they didn't exactly have two make a marathon trek. Slovakia closer to Poland, geographically speaking
Welcome back. Making toast sounds more interesting than watching this match
Slovakia wins a corner
Slovakia shot blocked after winning two headers off the corner .Swedish manager, Jan Andersson won't be pleased about that
I'm going to take Sparky walkies as I need a break from this tedious match. Will be back for the second half
Half time right on 45 min mark
I'm back toward the end of the first half and it seems like I chose well. 0-0.
What has to change for the second half
Cookie Coleman's reply.....Both teams
Here's the Guardian comment on that first half:
"Half-time: Sweden 0-0 Slovakia. That was atrocious. But there’s a morbid fascination to see whether the second half could be worse."
The rain is bucketing down at Wembley.... worse than I thought it was!!
You were Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade
I chose poorly
You chose wisely
Look at that rain at Wembley!!!!
Back in time for the second half. Can't be any worse than the first
They're off rom St. Pete
Nice quote, Dave and agreed with Cookie,.
Early chance for Sweden and Isak has a shot blocked for a corner off a long ball from the back
Corner headed out and Forsberg has a shot from 25 yards out deflected over , but the ref says goal kick
Sweden not exactly prolific in front of goalie the Euros. Have gone 336 minutes without scoring and that last goal was an OG vs Ireland
Slovakia with a corner and Duda shoots well over from just outside the box
OH! Finally some work for one of the keepers as Dubravaka pushes around a header from Augustinsson
Isak heads on the next corner and Danielson heads well over
That save by Dubravka was the first save of the match by either keeper. Now Isak has a shot deflected off the bum off a Slovak defender for another Swedish corner
I'm back... apparently I didn't miss anything
Like for like as Robin Quaison on for Markus Berg
Not much. Just the first save of the match, but otherwise practically nothing
Uefa says it is "confident" the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 will be held at Wembley but has a contingency plan amid concerns around England's coronavirus restrictions. The Times reported the games could be moved from London to Budapest if VIPs are not given an exemption to England's strict quarantine rules.
The UK government postponed lifting all restrictions until 19 July.
Most countries in Euro 2020 are on the government's amber or red list.
Header over the top
Inches over by Isak as it skims the top of the net
Thanks for the update. UEFA would be sending the wrong message if the semis and the finals are switched to Budapest just because Hungary has too lenient a COVID policy. The UK shouldn't be punished for doing the right thing
Shot saved
Nice solo run down the lefty by Isak , getting past three players then his near post shot ruined around by Dubravka
Penalty to the Swedes....no ex #7 Man U players on the pitch... so apparently it will be missed
Def pen
PENALTY SWEDEN. NICE ONE TOUCH PASSING THEN DUBRAVKA BOOKED FOR HAULING DOWN A SWEDISH PLAYER. NICE PASS FROM ISAK
FORSBERG to take
Forsberg to take...Great pen
1-0
GOAL !!! FORSBERG GIVES THEM THE LEAD WITH A WELL PLACED SPOT KICK DESPITE DUBRAVKA GUESSING THE RIGHT WAY
I like that Dub didn't guess...he went to save it...it was just too good
Right before the penalty Slovakia with the mind games as they brought on Vlady weiss for Robert Mak Truck that ran out of petrol
Agreed. Great penalty. Nothing Dubravka should have done
I didn't realize Hamsik had come off . Replaced by Elayne Bene
Slovakia punished for sitting back. Their two most influential players. Hamsik and Mak replaced. They will be forced to come out of their shell and attack
PASS THE BLOODY BALL!!
OH! Nice solo run by Isak off sloppy Slovak passing then Claesson Pickle with a shot blocked for a corner
As things stand Sweden all but through
If this result holds and Spain wins tomorrow then Poland is out
Slovakia shot blocked then Augustinsson heads out for a Slovak corner in June
Just checking in toward the end of this one. It looks like Sweden are headed for the Round of 16. Slovakia will also hope to qualify as a Best Third Place team. Poland will likely have to get something from Spain to have any hope of going forward. Spain are currently third in the group! Cor!
A couple of Slovak shot s blocked off the corner then Vlady Weiss booked for a striker's tackle as Sweden tried to counter
Welcome back, Bob. Yes. As things stand Poland eliminated if they lose and this result holds. Spain has a game in hand , so that may change
Not sure, but I think Sweden needs a draw vs Poland to clinch a place in the round off sixteen
If Spain wins their two remaining matches , Sweden is through
Into stoppage time. A quintet of stoppage time minutes. That's bloody ridiculous
5 added minutes has started
I think that was a gift of a corner there
Slovakia gifted a corner as Bengtsson clear a Slovak long ball. Didn't need to
Kuco called for a push in the back off a Slovak corner. Why do that when a goal down in stoppage time?
Jan Andersson here to ruin Dave's day both a stoppage time change . Another Toon player on as Krafth oil for playmaker, Forsberg, giving sweden another defender
Free kick from Weiss headed out for another Slovak corner
Dubravka out but Robin Olsson punches away the corner
I don't know why nobody else has a problem with added time
Again, there was so many complaints when United scored vs Shef Wed with 6 minutes of added time....they had to replace an official!!
Now it that amount or more in almost every game
Slovakia can't get a sghot off and want a penalty for hand ball
Long range shot from Kuco just over
Slovaks want a pen... VAR looking...Nothing given
PREM....are you watching?
Now the ridiculous added time has added time
FINALLY the final whistle goes
Now lets go Poland!!
Let's have Spain in the bottom spot
Now on to England's group
It's over and Sweden wins 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Forsberg and all but through
I'm of course happy to see the ancestors safely through to the next round. Let's hope Spain flops tomorrow.
Don't be playing the Ancestor Card....you buggered off
England played Scotland in the Euro 2000 play off match
They won at Hampden 2-0 but lost at home 1-0
I'll take the '96 score and not the '00 result
Weather in Glasgow looks okay... It was pouring at Wembley
At kick off time... 57 degrees and 90% chance of light rain thru the whole match
I am already getting nervous but I am NOT taking off my shirt
Right then, my work for the day is done and I'm settling to enjoy the footer. First up is the Croatia v. Czech Republic match at Hampden. I'm really glad that this one isn't at Wembley and England aren't having to play at Hampden.
I've got the lucky England shirt on as well - a red '66 edition.
Back for the next match and the rest of the day is Group D and the remainder of the day will be UK based matches
I saw scenes from Hampden and looks dreary and overcast, which is typical for Scotland, but no weather concerns. Neither team should be able to use the conditions as an excuse
They said the rain has stopped at Wembley , but may start up soon
WOW ! Hampden Park open Halloween 1903. I doubt there was any trick or treating
The teams getting prepared to come out now:
Croatia (4-2-3-1): Livakovic; Vrsaljko, Vida, Lovren, Gvardiol; Modric, Kovacic; Brekalo, Kramaric, Perisic; Rebic.
Czech Republic (4-2-3-1): Vaclik; Coufal, Kalas, Celustka, Boril; Holes, Soucek; Masopust, Darida, Jankto; Schick
I posted the weather for Wembley earlier
Patrick Schick has a chance to take the lead in the Golden Boot race, now that The Chunk failed to score yesterday. Chances are they'll rest him for the next one as well.
I have got my England warm up with a huge Cross of St George's on the back
I do have a red and a white Bobby Moore 66 shirt
That's for later
Efan Heck! He's partnering the irksome Derek Rae
I'm babysitting another dog that I had to feed and take walkies then had to be on the phone with the credit card company. I'm not going to be able to go back and read earlier comments today. Is that a requirement to be on the blog today? I barely had enough time to make it back
So, what's the best score for England in this one?
I'm thinking that Croatia would be the favorites , but that's a guess on my part. Should be a close match
England needs to do their part by defeating Scotland, so I'm thinking a Croatia win, so both teams are level on three points then England would need just a draw vs the Czechs to win the group which they should be able to do
FYI---TV games announced
Friday Aug 13
Brentford vs Arsenal 8pm
Sat
Man U vs Leeds 12:30
Norwich v Liverpool 5:30
Sun
Newcastle v West Ham 2 pm
Spurs v Man City 4:30
Fantastic - Saturday match on NBC! Just like last season! I'd take another 4-3 away loss.
We are off
They're off from Hampden Park with what looks like very few fans
What do we want here?
Thanks for the update. Steve will be Pleased that the Gunners are part of the opening match of the season and a nice Friday evening kickoff
When will the Croatians get a chance to wear their checkerboard outfit?
I'm thinking a Croatia win would be best for England
I think so too.... good for the Scots too
Czechs attacking early on and a Hammered shot from Coufal blocked
Sort of a checkerboard kit . Black and very miniature charcoal gray checkerboard
Now the Czechs win a corner
Header from Soucek Hammered just over off a corner from Jankto
Actually, a CR win would be preferred for the Scots
Doesn't really matter....they would have to beat the Croats
Derek pronounces Schick as Chic
Agreed. It's a tough road for the Scots because they will need a win vs the Three Lions or Croatia and it's hard to see them getting anything out of either match
Probably a draw, right? That would mean that England would top the group ahead of Tuesdays matches. With a win today, Scotland would be just about be down and out, needing to beat Croatia on Tuesday.
Coufal doesn't Hammer the ball out of play ,m but it comes off him for a Croatia corner . COR!
Jankto.... it reminds me of a classic true story on Would I Lie to You.... such a funny show
A draw puts the Czechs on four points.. Scots would still need a win from somewhere , which is difficult to see
I'm not familiar with that show. Sounds like a game show
Whatever happens, I want to see England really put the hammer down against the Scots.
Shut it, Derek!
Ante Rebic wins a CXoratai fre kick off a challenge from Bristol Citys Kalas. That's not idle gossip
Great show!
Lovren is over a free kick now - why?
LOL, Bob. That sounds about right
Free kick chance....useless effort
The kind of effort you'd expect from a center back. Why not Modric?
Why is Loveren taken the free kick. Well over
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2WXArv3QQI
Efan refers to Loveren as solid. I think of him as erratic and good for a mistake every match. Just my thoughts
The best on the show tho was Bob Mortimer
Oh - Jankto had a chance at the back post from the cross by Coufal. Blasted it well over.
The British love those kinds of shows - not so much over here. Whose Line Is It? is probably the exception, but that started in Britain.
Lots of huff and puff and honest endeavor from both sides, but nothing in the way of decent goalscoring opportunities so far.
It is so funny!
Matt and I love it!!
I'm watching lots of clips right now!
i just watched the show on the Youtube link sent rather hilarious , but in some respects a tad disturbing. Thanks for the link
The Czech's go close
Decent chance for the Czechs . Too much passing in the Croat box and cleared
Oh - Schick had a chance there from a decent move. Coufal set him up but it was a bit behind him.
Dumb Scot for today!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B94q7gUu75k
Wow - Eriksen discharged from hospital! That's amazing!
Could we call the Croatia jerseys chess board shirts as well. In that case if the Croats lose to the Czechs would that make it Czech mate, mates?
The Czechs seem the better side here.
A Croatia win could be dangerous!
If they win and England lose to CR.... there could be three teams on 6 points
Nice one, David. They're playing backgammon today, though. Not very effective.
That is great news
Definitely a Croatia win is the most dangerous result here. I prefer a draw.
The Croats with the best chance as Czech keeper, Vaclik clears off a Croat player and he's lucky that it went out for a goal kick. That could have gone anywhere
Just saw the comment . Delighted for Eriksen
Now Croatia have a corner after early Czech dominance
Half chance there from Perisic but he put it right at the keeper. Croatia just starting to play a bit.
Who will take over in the Prem?
There is big talk of Rafa going to Goodison
Spurs still can't sort it out... will they wait until the Belgians are done and go for Martinez?
The records of the NL qualifiers in half a dozen matches is one win and 5 losses having been outscored 12-4. Keeping it close for thew most part , but a poor record
How about a return to Goodison for Roberto Martinez? I'm thinking Harry redknapp or Hoddle for the Spurs job
No goals from open play today. Just a spot kick. Hope the match from wembley is memorable
So far both matches today have featured teams from the former Czechoslovakia
Patrick Bamford gets a shout-out!
Fat Sam is probably available?
'Huge' car dealer Billy Fuccillo dies in Florida at 64
Were his commercials where you guys are
I thought he was much older
Derek is pretending to be in Glasgow today when of course he's somewhere in New Jersey watching on a monitor.
The sun makes an appearance at Hampden. Not sure about the attendance , but doesn't look like it's even at the permitted capacity
Yeah - I remember them out here. They have a big Fucillo dealership on Grand Island near Niagara Falls. 64 isn't much of an innings.
