Euro 2020/1 - Day 8

Happy Friday, everyone! It's England time again. We start off today with a couple of undercard matches from Group D and E to get us prepared for the Home Nations match-up with the Auld Enemy. We start with Slovakia and Sweden. The Swedes got a very serviceable draw against group favorites Spain earlier in the week, while Slovakia did over a weak Polish side. With a win this morning, either side can book their berth in the Round of 16.

That's followed by the other match-up in England's group, with the Croatian trying to bounce back from that loss to England as they take on a Czech side that, thanks to two-goal Patrick Schick, defeated Scotland in the first match on Monday.

Then at 3pm, it's the big one. England v. Scotland. England are clearly the superior side but the Scots are always up for a derby match with their neighbors to the south. It should be an absorbing day at Euro 2020/1 - join me.

Morning Boys

I am already ready for the late game of the day!! AGAIN, I have changed my routine for watching my team... I have an England shirt already on!

There are rumors that both Reece James and Luke Shaw will play as the two full-backs. Not sure if Grealish will get the start. I hope he comes on at one point!!

I was thinking about the permutations for today. I think England can qualify for the next round but not win the group.

If England win and Croatia win then England will have 6 points and then next 2 will 3. That would mean Croatia couldn't catch us and a draw vs the CR would win the group

Morning, Dave! Great to have you on board for England-Scotland Day.

As with yesterday, I'll be in and out during the first match, taking care of a few work details. I'll be back full time for the Czech v. Croatia match.

Already fed up with them talking about the Spanish 'domination'.... possession means crap

Totally agree....if they could lose to Poland tomorrow would be great and they would be in trouble!

So many commentators over and I guess in today's game in all...think they need so many facts.... just commentate....enough is going on

9:03 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

OK.... the didn't LOSE!!!

9:04 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They got just as much out of the game as Spain did... and they could have won it. I remember two big chances

9:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Hamsik is overrated as a player and past his peak. In the past two seasons has played in China, then after the March break this year played half a dozen matches with Gothenburg and was signed by Turkish club Trabzonspor in June. Not exactly in demand by big clubs

9:05 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Very rainy in England today
Normally that would be an advantage for England not playing in hot weather but the slop....but we are playing the Jocks

9:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree. For all their possession, Spain didn't have a huge number of changes. They were really boring too. The announcers need to mention that too

What do you think is the best result for England in the next match?

9:10 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

People are talking about England coming second in the group is better but that is only for the R16 match
I think the road is better if we win
Play the runner up of Group of Death at Wembley
Play in Rome
Play at Wembley again

9:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Before the match Chris Coleman mentioned that Slovakia knows how to work the refs. I'm starting to see it with all the falling down

9:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I would want England to win the group. If they expect to win the tournament they will face a team as good a s Portugal at some time

9:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If England wins their group and Germany finishes third then they could play each other in the semis at Wembley

9:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

This is the only match outside the UK today

9:13 AM

Good point
Wonder if it is raining in Scotland too

9:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure . If it's raining in Scotland then that might favor the Czechs even though Croatia should be used to the weather too.

9:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. it would be nic e to see them wearing thew kits they did during the Home International matches

9:18 AM

9:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sweden wins a another corner . They need to do better with this one. This one better, but a waste as Sweden called for a push

9:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Actually a dive as Isak never touched the player. Usually the German refs have solid matches , but this one has been conned a few times and too easily at that

9:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kris Olsson the first player booked and I think he had been warned so this one makes sense

9:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The camera angle has been horrible at times because it's aimed right at the sun . Hard to see some of the action

9:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Lindelof weight long throw duty. Do you want him to have that responsibility at United?

9:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I may take Sparky walks five too ten minutes before halftime if this match doesn't improve

9:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

kris Olsson , already on a card commits a foul. He may be replaced at the half

9:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Skrinjar takes the free kick and just to far as his outstretched teammate can't keep the ball in play

Cookie Coleman's reply.....Both teams

9:46 AM

Here's the Guardian comment on that first half:

"Half-time: Sweden 0-0 Slovakia. That was atrocious. But there’s a morbid fascination to see whether the second half could be worse."

10:02 AM

Sweden not exactly prolific in front of goalie the Euros. Have gone 336 minutes without scoring and that last goal was an OG vs Ireland

Slovakia with a corner and Duda shoots well over from just outside the box

10:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Finally some work for one of the keepers as Dubravaka pushes around a header from Augustinsson

10:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Isak heads on the next corner and Danielson heads well over

10:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That save by Dubravka was the first save of the match by either keeper. Now Isak has a shot deflected off the bum off a Slovak defender for another Swedish corner

Uefa says it is "confident" the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 will be held at Wembley but has a contingency plan amid concerns around England's coronavirus restrictions. The Times reported the games could be moved from London to Budapest if VIPs are not given an exemption to England's strict quarantine rules.

The UK government postponed lifting all restrictions until 19 July.

Most countries in Euro 2020 are on the government's amber or red list.

Inches over by Isak as it skims the top of the net

10:23 AM

Thanks for the update. UEFA would be sending the wrong message if the semis and the finals are switched to Budapest just because Hungary has too lenient a COVID policy. The UK shouldn't be punished for doing the right thing

Shot saved

Slovakia shot blocked then Augustinsson heads out for a Slovak corner in June

10:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Just checking in toward the end of this one. It looks like Sweden are headed for the Round of 16. Slovakia will also hope to qualify as a Best Third Place team. Poland will likely have to get something from Spain to have any hope of going forward. Spain are currently third in the group! Cor!

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A couple of Slovak shot s blocked off the corner then Vlady Weiss booked for a striker's tackle as Sweden tried to counter

10:42 AM

Welcome back, Bob. Yes. As things stand Poland eliminated if they lose and this result holds. Spain has a game in hand , so that may change

10:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure, but I think Sweden needs a draw vs Poland to clinch a place in the round off sixteen

10:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If Spain wins their two remaining matches , Sweden is through

5 added minutes has started

10:46 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think that was a gift of a corner there

10:46 AM

Slovakia gifted a corner as Bengtsson clear a Slovak long ball. Didn't need to

10:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kuco called for a push in the back off a Slovak corner. Why do that when a goal down in stoppage time?

10:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jan Andersson here to ruin Dave's day both a stoppage time change . Another Toon player on as Krafth oil for playmaker, Forsberg, giving sweden another defender

10:49 AM

Free kick from Weiss headed out for another Slovak corner

10:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dubravka out but Robin Olsson punches away the corner

10:49 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't know why nobody else has a problem with added time

Again, there was so many complaints when United scored vs Shef Wed with 6 minutes of added time....they had to replace an official!!

Now it that amount or more in almost every game

10:50 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Slovakia can't get a sghot off and want a penalty for hand ball

10:50 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Long range shot from Kuco just over

Slovaks want a pen... VAR looking...Nothing given

PREM....are you watching?

10:50 AM

Now the ridiculous added time has added time

10:51 AM

11:56 AM

So, what's the best score for England in this one?

11:57 AM

I'm thinking that Croatia would be the favorites , but that's a guess on my part. Should be a close match

11:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

England needs to do their part by defeating Scotland, so I'm thinking a Croatia win, so both teams are level on three points then England would need just a draw vs the Czechs to win the group which they should be able to do

Blogger manunitedrules said...

Derek pronounces Schick as Chic

12:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. It's a tough road for the Scots because they will need a win vs the Three Lions or Croatia and it's hard to see them getting anything out of either match

12:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Probably a draw, right? That would mean that England would top the group ahead of Tuesdays matches. With a win today, Scotland would be just about be down and out, needing to beat Croatia on Tuesday.

Could we call the Croatia jerseys chess board shirts as well. In that case if the Croats lose to the Czechs would that make it Czech mate, mates?

The Czechs seem the better side here.

A Croatia win could be dangerous!
If they win and England lose to CR.... there could be three teams on 6 points

Nice one, David. They're playing backgammon today, though. Not very effective.

That is great news

Definitely a Croatia win is the most dangerous result here. I prefer a draw.

The Croats with the best chance as Czech keeper, Vaclik clears off a Croat player and he's lucky that it went out for a goal kick. That could have gone anywhere

Half chance there from Perisic but he put it right at the keeper. Croatia just starting to play a bit.

Who will take over in the Prem?

There is big talk of Rafa going to Goodison

Spurs still can't sort it out... will they wait until the Belgians are done and go for Martinez?

The records of the NL qualifiers in half a dozen matches is one win and 5 losses having been outscored 12-4. Keeping it close for thew most part , but a poor record

How about a return to Goodison for Roberto Martinez? I'm thinking Harry redknapp or Hoddle for the Spurs job

No goals from open play today. Just a spot kick. Hope the match from wembley is memorable

The sun makes an appearance at Hampden. Not sure about the attendance , but doesn't look like it's even at the permitted capacity

Yeah - I remember them out here. They have a big Fucillo dealership on Grand Island near Niagara Falls. 64 isn't much of an innings.
