Sunday at the Euros
Morning, chaps! We enjoyed a thrilling start to the knock out round at Euro 2020/1 yesterday, with Denmark and Italy booking their places in the Quarterfinals. Today, we're taking a stroll through the Lowlands, starting with the Netherlands taking on the Czech Republic at noon EST. The Dutch breezed through a weak Group C but we saw what that meant for Italy yesterday. Can the Czechs led by three-goal Patrick Schick give the Dutch a scare today?
That's followed by one of the ties of the round - Belgium v. Portugal. Portugal showed in Group F that they could either be on or off, while Belgium slowly but surely made their way through Group B without too fuss. It should be enthralling - join me here!

They're showing some clips of the Dutch glory days from Euro 88. Excellent team with Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten. I believe it's the only time that Netherlands have ever won a major tournament, despite having reached a number of finals including the 1974 and 1978 World Cup Finals.
Good morning. Here for the early match from Budapest
The late match is from Sevilla, pretty much making it a home match for Portugal
Correct, Bob. The 1988 Euros is the only major tournament they have won. They also lost in the 2010 WC Final. Their only WC Final that wasn't against the host nation
I guess the Czech Republic is geographically the home team
One thing I noticed about Paddy the Schick razor is that his only goals from open play were against the Scots. He didn't much against a quality defense like England's
Hey Boys
I am here as the teams are in the tunnel.
Morning, David - hope you're having a better day today with less stress.
I think you're right that the Czechs might benefit from the proximity to Budapest for their home fans. Should be a big crowd out for them. Might make some difference.
Uh oh - it's Derek Rae on the microphone this morning so expect some overly fussy pronunciation of Dutch names.
How is Derek going to be handling names today
Will he somehow get in Leeepziig
Morning, Dave - what's going on on the other side of the state?
Surely there is someone played at Lay-ver-kooooosen.
I wish Jon Champion was with Effan
Good morning everyone and thanks, Bob. Sparky is better . Won't be dealing with the contractor today , so it should be better
I won't be around for the late match because I was invited by my nephew to watch the match at his place which is half a mile away. Should be around tomorrow
News out of the Croatian camp
Perisic out of the Spain game with a positive test
Sounds like a good time David
I was two for two yesterday in picking Round of sixteen winners. This match I have neither team advancing . Predicted Holland to lose to Italy in the Round of sixteen . In the late match I have Belgium advancing and Portugal losing, albeit to a different opponent
Thanks, Dave. Yes we're ordering out and having some beverages
How did Frank D get the Dutch manager's job?
He was sacked after four games at Palace...without scoring a goal. He was sacked by Atlanta Utd
Thanks for the update, Dave. Hard to believe players are still getting COVID. That will be a huge lose for Croatia
We will have D Paayee for Derek
Budapest is already being butchered
I was thing the same about Frank D. I think he has a twin brother . Is that correct?
We are off
They';re off from Budapest, which has no capacity limits
I agree, Dave - but he is a Dutch legend. They do seem to favor former internationals in the job.
"Searing heat" in the stadium, according to Derek.
oooh, Almost a good cross
PVA finds Danny Maelen and his cross for Denzell Dumfries was just too long
Holes just over with a long range shot as he found some Holes in thew Dutch defense
Even though Denzell Dumfries is a right back he's chipped in with some goals.
I could have 7 out of 8 quarter finalists
Free kick chance for the Czechs......they give it away before the TV shows it...Effan was confused
A bright start for the Czechs here, but that was also true of Wales yesterday before they wilted.
I had mentioned that I had the Dutch losing to Italy in the Round of sixteen and had the Czechs as one of the two worst third placed teams. No pints for Yours Truly this match, so I'll just sit back and enjoy
First chance for Memphis to stretch his legs - did well at first but then ran into trouble.
I just checked the best I can do is 6 out of 8. Possibly a good number of points for Dave
I've just had a look at the Predictions - not a lot of us picked the Netherlands - the favorites today - to progress, mainly because a number of us picked the Dutch to finish second in the group and to have a tougher draw coming out of this one.
Correct, Bob. He will have to do more than 3.14 stretches and run more than the circumference.
Correct, Bob. I fall into that category with the Dutch
Ooh... short corner...then whipped in...header at the back post...well off
Early corner now for the Dutch. Taken short and De Light was in there but probably offside.
D3.14's rebound went out for a throw in
Cross from Blind headed across by De Licht then the Dutch shot across the box and out for a throw.
Is it just me or is Derek taming down the pronunciations today? I know he's been getting a lot of stick for it on-line.
Do you think the two German based players in the England squad play against Germany?
Of course, many of the Germans don't play in Germany
Only Prem player starting for the Dutch is PVA ,of Palace . The Czechs have the two Hammers and even a Championship player as Kalas, Of Bristol City starts. that's not idle gossip
He's still got his Depay, de licht, Dumfeee, Thomash
Malen nearly in there but cut out by the keeper. I'm somewhat surprised that Weghorst was dropped. I thought his little and large combination with Memphis was working for Holland.
Useless corner....stunning how pathetic they are
The Austrian goal yesterday was the ONE out of 100 that work
Did you hear Jose having a pop at Shaw again for beyond bad corners
I'm not sure if the two Dortmund players will play . I'm guessing perhaps on the subs bench.
Jose needs to shut it. Shaw has actually shown improvement since Jose left
Keeper went walkabout...he survives
I like how the Dutch play...they are positive
Morning lads. I'd like to see the Dutch take no prisoners and show some class today. None of that Italian bollocks in the 90 minutes.
Denzell Dumfrees played down left and his pass blocked for a corner
Good morning, Steve. I agree with you
Derek starts up by saying Masoo Poost
I'm enjoying a choccie bikkie with my tea now. It's a McVitties Digestive Thin. I'd never had them before but saw them in my local Aldi. Who knew?
Czech fans booing but D Pi held in the shape of a circle
I agree David. I think that Jose didn't suffer enough physical abuse on the playground when he was a kid. He'd be a different and different person if he'd taken several more punches in the mouth for being a sneaky little eye gouger.
The Dutch won another corner . Good defending g by the Bristol City player
Kate keeps thinking that legendary French author Marcel Proust is playing for the Czechs.
Not sure why Czech fans wanted a foul against the Dutch . it was a good old fashioned shoulder charge on Schick
Never had a Thin?
We get the regular McVitties Choc Digestives at Price Chopper
Morning, Steve - welcome! Agree with you - I'm all about the Oranje today.
Agreed, Steve, but surprised. I would think growing up on the streets of Lisbon he would have been roughed up a time or two
Nice snack for the early match. Well done, Bob
Proust in his first book wrote about,, wrote about
Proust in his first book wrote abou, wrote about
LOL, Bob! Did you tell Kate that the Czechs have a dead hamster in their squad
Hey Steve
Missed you joining
The dead hamster on the subs bench today
Super ball in.... to no Dutch player
Agreed, David - I doubt whether either Sancho or Bellingham start. From listening to Southgate's comments on the BBC podcasts, it seems that he's concerned about the German wingbacks and may go to a back five with three center backs and two wingbacks (probably Shaw and James). Two defensive middies, as well.
Derek now at it with Kaderbaek. I guess he din't get the hint
Poor free kick from Memphis - hit the first man.
YIKES! Southgate really is worried about the Germans . Is he playing for pens?
SEVEN AT THE BACK THEN!!!!!
Have them worry about us!!
Awful thru ball there by the Czechs
BLOODY HELL! what's with that pronunciation of Stecklenberg ?
Ooh...Soucek almost in with a header
Oh - Soucek nearly in with a diving header at the near post.
Agreed , Dave. Why play so defensive against Germany .They have plenty of holes at the back
I'm wearing my Oranje teeshirt with the "Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp!" commentator's call when he jinked his way around Ayala and the keeper in the WC.
Did you sing along with my quote, Bob?
Great Czech cross, but the header from Soucek well wide as he was well marked. First real Czech chance
I will never forget his winner vs the Argies in ET in the '98 WC/. That was a classic
Soucek would be useful to have in your team. I don't understand now why he remains as unmarked as he seems to be. It's not like you haven't been warned.
I did indeed, Dave - nice one!
Any winner against the Argies is a classic!!
That one really was tho
Drinkies....this is never made up with added time.
Plenty of dutch support considering it's geographically a home match for the Czechs
Oh - that's one of my favorite World Cup goals, Steve.
Time for drinkies in Budapest.
Time for drinkies and this one is valid as it's around 90
Did Kate give you look....what is this weirdo I married?
Even RVN needs some hydration
Play resumes . More Czech support as expected as their fans are much closer to Budapest than the Dutch
Agreed, Dave, about the Argies, but that was extra special.
I wonder if subs will be key as it's really hot in Budapest today.
The Czech support is solid in international tournaments. Bob and I remember well the noise at Wembley from '96
There Derk is with Maso POOST. It's like an obsession with him
Comfortable save by Stecks between the sticks from the Schick razor
Not a lot of chances in this one.
Thanks for the info, Steve. Didn't release that about the Czech support. I'm guessing that's all post 1990. Is that correct?
I have a feeling there will be more chances later on in the match as the heat surely must be a factor
Back in 96 my brother in law had a choice of Semi Final to pick before the tourney started
He didn't think England would top the group over the Dutch.... so he picked Old Trafford
Jon, Phil, Tony and Mike had to deal with the dross put on by France and the Czech Rep
That's fairly standard, mate. The Python references, in particular, are completely lost on her. I've tried to put the work in but it's a lost cause.
LOL!!!
I do remember having fun the Czechies at the Euro 96 final - wish they'd won that day.
Danny Maelen with a shot blocked by Kalas for a corner off a pass from Denzell Dumfries
Corner from D 3.14 headed away
I HATE short corners!!!
Not sure what this Russian ref is up to now. A bit fussy.
LOL! I've given up with the python references after all these years
I've been wondering if this Masopust is related to the Czech superstar of the 1962 WCfinalists that lost to Brazil.
Pathetic corner again... doesn't beat the first man
How do players get away with it?
I was rooting for the Czechs in the '96 final too. I thought they sat back too much
Well, without the big man Weghorst around, the Dutch don't really have many targets to hit at corners. The Czechs have a really large back four.
I refuse to stop with Python/Fawlty Towers/Only Fools and Horses quotes
De Licht heads away a Czech cross for a c corner
Another PATHETIC corner!!! It used to be a scoring chance!!
First Czech corner headed away by the first man. Dave fines him two weeks wages . Is that right?
I wish TT would pay attention to Effan....he only speaks once in a while and not for long!!
I knew it - Derek found a way to work Lay-ver-koooooosen and Liepzeeeeg into the same sentence. Yachtzi!
Effan Derek is really testing my patience
I should would! Maybe cutting off their ghoulies...slice them off with a bread knife
Quote from?
Coufal loses the ball while in the Dutch half. Thought they had a break, but just a long possession
I've had many occasions trying to explain why I've screamed out "Burma!" in a high-pitched British woman's voice while watching the BBC World News. It loses something in translation.
How did the Czechs not take the lead there!!
Barak with a short blocked by De Licht for a corner off a nice pass from Masopust. Should have scored
Pull up your orange socks you Dutch!
LOL
It's alright....you panicked
The Czechs nearly in there but for an excellent block. They'll need to take these chances, as the Austrians found yesterday. The Czechies are looking dangerous.
PVA off for treatment. Corner from Barak headed on then cleared by Wijnaldum. Now the Dutch attack
Nice run into the box....finds no one!
Also, how do you wear pink boots with orange socks
The Dutch are looking a bit tight today, just like the Italians yesterday.
Soucek called for supposedly hammering Wijnaldum . Skipper on skipper.
Nice ball through but Malen was a mile off.
Nice long ball from the Roof for PVA . Well offside
Do players know the offside rule.....MILES off
Meant the Roon, not the roof
Agreed, Dave. He was halfway back to Amsterdam
The commentators are trying to put some polish on this one - it hasn't been good.
Effan says a good half , but the keeper not tested and no real chances. ISn't that a contradiction. A pair of stoppage time minutes
2 added minutes...how long did they drink for?
Nothing else happened ?
Too inconsistent
Agreed, Bob. It's been kind of scrappy
Dutch not putting in the box
Finally... a chance...awful turn and shot
Offside anyway....PAY ATTENTION!!!!
HT
0-0
Useless
Oh - big chance there for the Dutch but Van Arnholt fluffed his lines and was offside to boot.
Half time - 0-0.
Nice Dutch move as D 3.14 found Wijnaldum with a great pass , but the former Pool player shot wide
It's 0-0 at the end of a scrappy half
I don't think the Danes will fear either side in thew quarters. If anything they should feel confident
Hopefully the Dutch will get a couple dozen espressos in during the half. That was not great.
LOL, Steve! That might bring the Dutch back to life, or at least the match
Off for the second half
Goals please!
The second half is underway from Budapest
Quick yellow
Denzel Dumfrees booked for a challenge on Barak, who is down , holding his head
Seems harsh. He was using his arms for leverage . How else can he jump?
We're back on for the second half and Dumfries picks up a yellow after a clash.
There weren't any changes at half time but the Czech may have to come off for a concussion concern.
I'm off for a bite of lunch - back in a tick.
Actually on Kaderbaek. A bit winded, but able to continue
SHUT IT DEREK!
Cheers, Bob. Enjoy
OH! Dumfries behind the Czechs hs off a long Dutch clearance, but his pass was off where a player was open for a tap in
Why is Scott Parker leaving Fulham for Bournemouth?
Derek fixated with the pronunciation of Masopust . Knock it off!
Dutch with a chance.... STOPPED!!
Oh - great chance for Malen but Vaslic did so well.
OH! Danny Maelen through one one with Czech keeper, Vaclik.but he s saves at his feet
De Licht with a handball....totally meant....was it a red?
Then De Licht booked for intentional hand ball;l just outside the Czech box
Did they look to see if it was a red?
They are checking
VAR checking to see if it should be red for denial of a goal scoring opportunity
Free kick now for the Czechs while there is a Red Card check for deliberate handball stopping a goalscoring opportunity.
Not sure why Scotty leaving Bob and Kate's for the Cherries. Did the Cherries sack Woodgate?
Ref is going over to have a look - the Dutchman may be in trouble here.
I hate how it ruins the game but was it stopping a chance
Going to the screen...an English ref told the Russian to go look
The Ref Russian over to the monitor
He's falling but cups the ball.
I can't believe De Licht isn't walking down the tunnel already. It's a textbook red. I think it will be. The only question is why this Russian baldie needs the VAR assist.
He's OFF
I think it's going to be a red
I still don't like it
Looks like a red to me on the review. De Ligt is off and the Dutch are down to ten men!
He's off and the Dutch down to ten men the remainder of the match
PATHETIC FREE KICK!!
It was deliberate and finally De Licht is walking. Like the guy in the ref's ear piece couldn't have hurried that up.
Into the wall by Coufal. Denzell Dumfries breaks and Coufal booked for grabbing him from behind on the break
Maybe England's group WAS THE BEST!
I agree, Steve. It seems the right decision
Is this is a change that shows a lot of Promes as Quincy on for Danny Maelen?
Promes on for "can't run around a completely stranded keeper."
Crazy minute for the Dutch...should have taken the lead...because you didn't...you're down to ten men!
Front post corner again...this was slightly more dangerous but sill STUPID
VAR checking for a pen!!
Nothing given
Whoever said 40 minutes ago that neither of these teams are going to frighten the Danes was spot on. I mean has Van Anholt hit even one ball that's beaten the man next to him?
Promes was a flop for the Hornets and now playing in Russia. The Dutch never picked players from a league of that level in the past
