Is Manchester United v Everton a cracking start to the FA Cup third round, an untimely inconvenience, a chance for Frank Lampard to save his job or something else?

Even though both teams are enduring an unpleasant trophy drought – six years for United, 28 for Everton – it feels like their biggest priority is the Premier League. United want to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League; Everton want to finish outside the bottom three and not qualify for the Championship.

Good Afternoon, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. Excited that the Third Round starts at OT this year

2:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. I think the Prem is the priority for both teams even though I really would love to see United make a run in the Cup due to the trophy drought

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well this is a pleasant surprise: both managers have picked close to their strongest available sides. There are four changes apiece, though many of those are improvements with key players returning from injury or suspension.

Afternoon, David - thanks for joining in.

How's the weekend starting for you? How are Jacquelyn and Elizabeth doing?

I'm not sure if the Cup would save Lamps job. His last match as Chelsea gaffer was a cup win vs Luton. He was sacked a day or two later then replaced by Tommy Teuton Teuchel. Relegation for the Toffees would end a 69 year run the top flight. I guess it was nice while it lasted.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

You're welcome . Great to enjoy the pleasure of your company. Jacquelyn starts her new semester on Monday . I think Elizabeth is doing okay today. Sometimes she is bothered by frozen shoulder , which is a bit painful for her. I never told you all, but she's had it since late June. It's a lovely day weather wise today. How you are all since returning to WNY?

2:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, mate. Those are two strong starting lineups. Glad to see both teams taking the cup seriously. I know we signed Jack Butland on a free transfer to replace Dubravka , who returned to SJP as his loan spell at OT ended

Kate's not a fan of the United warm-up tops. What do you think?

2:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

We had a very tough drive back in torrential rain on Wednesday. Rested up yesterday and we're just starting to get a few errands done today.

2:47 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I've driven in torrential rain and don't envy the drive you had to make, even though snow and ice would have been worse. We had that weather the day before you all did. Glad you all made it back safely.

2:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I haven't turned on Plus yet. Will do so to check out those tops.

2:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I just turned on Plus and they're in the studio. I would love to see those tops.

2:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think nine of those United starters played at the WC. Definitely a quality lineup.

2:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Glad to hear that Elizabeth is feeling well today; I'm sorry to hear that she's been suffering that frozen shoulder condition for so long.

2:54 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve Nickel and Ale Moreno are really annoying . Can't wait till they get away from the studio

2:54 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers, mate. We really appreciate your support for this and over the years.

2:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The bookies basically are expecting United to advance just by showing up. They have to put in a good performance.

2:56 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sorry I missed the warmup tops. Teams in the tunnel . United out of their warmups

2:57 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Teams out on the pitch now.

3:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Champ calling Ten Hog authoritarian. Just because he's a disciplinarian doesn't mean he's authoritarian. He's the manager, not the players buddy

3:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from OT

3:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And we're underway - come on, United!

3:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

COME ON MAN UNITED!

3:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Lamps as manager is like McCarthyism in politics . It didn't work in the 50s and not working today. What do you think of that political comparison?

3:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wahay! United take the lead through a tap in by Antony! Easy peasy!

3:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WAY HAY ! MARC ANTONY GIVES UNITED THEW LEAD WTH A TAP IN AT THE FAR POST

3:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kung Fu Panda won the ball in midfield , passed it wide left to Rash whop went past Ben Godfrey then [passed for Marc Antony for an easy tap in at the far post, who made the Toffees look like Cleopatra

3:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Great work by Rash on the left side to burn Godfrey for pace and lay one on a plate for the Brazilian.

3:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Champ mentioned that there will be replays in the Third and Fourth Round this year. Based on the start that won't be an issue in this match

3:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Kung Fu Panda nearly adds a second - a whisker away. Everton are a mess.

3:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Just wide as an errant karate chop by Pickford resulted in a United shot going just wide. United nearly two up

3:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I don't see that as an issue today.

3:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. The Toffees looking like stale , hard, rotten candy.

3:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great minds think alike, mate

3:08 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And I quite like toffee - but not this variety.

3:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! The Toffees nearly equalize abating t the run of play. A sustained spell of possession as Damari Gray from just outside the box has a shot come off the post then off the back of De Gea and out inches wide for a corner

3:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BUGGER! CONNOR COADY TIES IT UP FROM THE CORNER

3:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now then! What's happened at the back there in the United area. Oh dear. Sorry, mate.

3:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

De Gea won't want to watch that one back. Very messy. So many chances to clear it.

So we've got a match now. 1-1.

3:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

United looking like a bunch of clowns on that goal . A decent clearance then a nice turn by Onana to get past Casemiro. Neal Maupay did well to keep the ball in play as his slide tackle went comically through De Gea's legs and an easy tap in for Coady

3:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Great block by Pickford from a karate chop off a pass from Rash

3:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Rash lays one off to Martial and that might have been United in the lead again. Pickers did well.

3:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Bob. We gifted them that goal

3:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Champ stated that De Gea may be shipped out this month as Un iced are looking for Diogo Costa, who started for Portugal in the WC. I didn't think he had a particularly stellar WC. He made a mess off a cross on the Morocco goal and that should be bread and butter for any keeper wanting to play in the Prem

3:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

You are probably aware that the sad news of the day is the passing of Luca Vialli due to pancreatic cancer at age 58. Sad that he had such a short innings. I always liked him

3:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bit of argybargy now between Rash and Godfrey.

3:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bruno booked for stamping on Onana. It wasn't a great challenge but Onana made the most of it

3:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. They were acting like Argies, LOL

3:31 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - that's terrible news. I remember that Mancini-Vialli Samp side of the late 80s with fondness. Pancreatic cancer is a beast. I've got a good friend who is struggling with it right now.

3:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

At times this has been like a basketball game – you attack, we attack. Maybe they players have been told to avoid a replay at all costs.

3:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Eriksen curls one just over the bar.

3:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. I think I remember Samp losing to Barca at Wembly in the 1992 European Cup Final. Sorry about your friend. As Steve stated , Off cancer.

3:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. However, I've been really disappointed with Un iced since the equalizer. Ten Hog will really need to lake the players have it at the half. A replay does provide an extra unneeded fixture . I don't blame the teams for not wanting a replay

3:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

An LOB blogging duo of stoppage time minutes.

3:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time: Surprised that this is still at 1-1. Off to do some diaper changes.

3:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's 1-1 at the half . United being punished for not putting the Toffees away then gifting them an equalizer. Eric Ten Hog will need to let the players have it at the half

3:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers, mate. Enjoy. Some United players could use a diaper change

3:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The second half is underway

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

COME ON MAN UNITED! LET'S WIN THIS.

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Iwobi leads a Toffees break then stopped by a nice old fashioned, sliding tackle by Malacia. It started with Casemiro gifting Iwobi possession. Iwobi now down , holding his ankle.

4:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That's it for Iwobi as he's stretchered off. Doucourre will replace him

4:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Frustrating how modern footballers start tying their shoes and taking off their tracksuits when they're com e on. They're professionals. Why don't they know any better

4:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WAY HAY! UNITED TAKE A 2-1 LEAD. RASH DRIVES A SHOT OFF CONNOR COADY FOR AN OG. NIOC ELONG DIAGONAL WIDE LEFT FOR RASH. HE GOT PAST COLEMAN MUSTARD THEN DRIOVE A PASS OFF CODAY FOR AN OG.

4:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Coady has scored for both sides at the Stratford End. Not sure he will want to brag about that or will he?

4:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Marc Antony shoots straight at Pickford from 25 yards out. Looked more like Cleopatra with that shot

4:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm just back in time to see Conor Cody knock in a cracking own goal. He'll want to ref the match and sell pies next!

4:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL! United fans singing sacked in the Morning to Lamps a minute after singing Que sera sera we're going to Wembuhlay

4:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Welcome back. Top form with the humor, mate. Keep them rolling.

4:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

United need to kill off this match now.

4:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Cheers, mate!

4:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ben Godfrey booked for a rash foul on Rash

4:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Next thing , Connor Coady will want to run for Speaker of the House. Thirteenth time NOT the charm

4:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. as long as it's a one goal lead the Toffees are still in this match

4:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Everton nearly struck again!

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

There's an example . Thankfully the Toffees didn't taking their chance. Ping pong in the United box and a close range shot well blocked

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Doucourre called for obstruction on Rash. He has no reason to complain.,

4:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pickford does well to tip over a long range shot from Bruno off a short free kick from Eriksen

4:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

He might get more votes than Kevin - LOL!

4:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Another foul from Doucourre on Rash and Darren England has lost patience with him as he's booked.

4:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Poor free kick basically a pass straight to Pickford.

4:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice tackle by Marc Antony on Mickey Dolenz Lenko then a foul from behind . Surprised that wasn't a booking.

4:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Like for like as DCL on for Neil Maupay

4:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Fred for Casemuiro . Like for like as one Brazi WC player on for another and another basically like for like as Garnacho is karate chopped on to the pitch

4:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wahay - it"s Garnacho time!

4:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BUGGER ! DESMOND AT OT AS DCL DEFLECTS A CROSS IN FROM A FOOT OUT

4:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That may be called back. Damari Gray was offside as he received a one two. PHEW! IT'S DISALLOWED. United still holding on to their slender lead

4:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell! It's Desmond!

Nope - ruled out for offside.

4:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WC winner, Lizzy Martinez, on for Malacia.

4:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Fred with a profanity laced tirade at Coleman. Was the mustard too spicy?

4:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Anthony Flash Gordon on for Seamus Coleman and Dwight McNeil for Mickey Lenkio. Attacking , spicy changes from Lamps, for else it's lights out

4:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The final rolls of the dice from Ten Hog as he shuts up shop.Maguire for Eriksen and McTomain for Marc Antony. Will Cleopatra see some McTomain poisoning for the Toffees?

4:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The latest news from Goodison Park is the Lamps can't win for Toffee.

4:45 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ten Hag trying to bolt the door now.

4:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Rash wins a corner off of Connor Coady. Between the two of them, all three goals have been scored one way or another

4:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Onana booked for fouling Lizzy Martinez after the corner was cleared

4:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Curling free kick from Rash just over. Decent free kick. It looks like Pickford had tipped it overs United is awarded a corner

4:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BLOODY HELL! Half a dozxwen stoppage time minutes. I guess a chunk of that was for the Iwobi injury

4:49 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

True enough, David.

4:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dwight McNeil with a cross blocked for a Toffees corner

4:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thankfully the Toffees can't get in a good cross. It appears that United got away with one as the cross last came off of McTomain poisoning for the Toffees

4:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice slide tackle by Ben Godfrey on Rash for a United corner

4:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Toffees next two Prem matches are vs Saints and Hammers . Do you want those to end in draws?

4:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WAY HAY! PENALTY UNITED BEN GODFREY FOULS GARNACHO

4:54 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Penalty for United! That'll do nicely!

4:54 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

VAR CHECKING, BUT THE DECISION SHOULD STAND. IT DOES AND RASH WILL TAKE.

4:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WAY HAY! NICE PANLTY BY RASH SENDING PICKFORD THE WRONG WAY TO MAKE IT 3-1 UN ITED. NOW IT'S DONE AND DUSTED AS TIME IS JUST ABOUT UP

4:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Congrats, mate - you're safely through to the 4th roumd.

4:56 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...
