The Quarter-finals Begin!
Morning, chaps! It's a big day in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with the quarter-finals kicking off with two big match-ups. It all gets going this morning with favorites Brazil against 2018 finalists Croatia. It's the young boys of Brazil against the old codgers of Croatia.
Later on, it's the rematch of the 1978 World Cup Final as Leo Messi's Argentina face the Clockwork Orange boys from Holland.
It's a busy day for me, with the twins' six-month appointment this afternoon, but I should be around for much of the first one. Join me?

Brazil have only met Croatia twice at the World Cup, and it’s not entirely clear what history teaches us. The bottom line is that the Seleção have won both matches, 1-0 in 2006, 3-1 in the opening match of 2014. But on both occasions the Croatians made the five-time champions work.
The teams set to battle it out in Doha:
Croatia: Livakovic, Juranovic, Lovren, Gvardiol, Sosa, Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic, Pasalic, Kramaric, Perisic.
Subs: Stanisic, Barisic, Erlic, Majer, Grbic, Vlasic, Livaja, Petkovic, Budimir, Orsic, Vida, Ivusic, Sutalo, Sucic, Jakic.
Brazil: Alisson, Eder Militao, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Danilo, Lucas Paqueta, Casemiro, Raphinha, Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Richarlison.
Subs: Alex Sandro, Fred, Weverton, Dani Alves, Fabinho, Bruno Guimaraes, Antony, Rodrygo, Everton Ribeiro, Ederson, Bremer, Pedro, Martinelli.
Referee: Michael Oliver (England).
Good Morning, Bob. I think those were both group matches.I remember the 2014 match because we went to a bar in D.C. for that match. I know I was with Steve and Johnno. Were you there?
In terms of the late match. I remember that 1978 final. I think the fix was on. What Steve and I remember better was the 1998 quarter which the Dutch won 2-1 with a late spectacular Berkamp winner. The last meeting was the 2014 semi when LVG was also in charge. It finished 0-0 and the Dutch won in a shootout. A repeat nets you and Bees a point in the standings.
Morning, David - great to have you on board. I remember that '78 final as well. We were spending a month at the beach in Italy and we watched it with a large, multinational crowd in the basement of our hotel. Fantastic experience!
The preliminaries are done and we're set to go.
Thanks, Bob. What do you remember of that 1998 quarterfinal? I am more familiar with that match. Steve should remember that well.. You and him should remember the 2014 opening match.
Thanks, as always for the timely update of the Predictions Game. It looks as if you're in pole position. I believe that you would be the first person to hold both the Shield and Lancer Cup simultaneously. Quite a feat!
I remember that quarterfinal in 1998 really well, especially that Berghamp special. I think I watched it with Steve at the late, lamented Lucky Bar in DC. I seem to remember an Argentinian getting sent off for a headbutt, but I forget who the hot head was involved.
WOW! I remember the Lucky Bar going far back , but not that far. Was the head butt player Diego Simeone? He got Becks sent off in the round of sixteen of the same tournament. I think it was 1-1 when the player was sent off.
A quiz question for you. In order for Brazil to advance today they need to do something they haven't done in twenty years , yet Morocco did this on Tuesday. What is that? It might be a bit tough
That is a tough one. I'll put my thinking cap on.
You're welcome , Bob. I wasn't sure if anyone had even read my update. I would be as surprised as you to be the first double winner.
Oh - Perisic nearly got on to that inviting cross.
Some decent pressure now from Croatia.
It's been a decent start by Croatia . COR!
It's a tough quiz question. I only know the answer because an announcer mentioned it during one of the matches. Also tough because when I give the answer you will be thinking surely not Brazil, but anyone else yes
A hint . The sides that eliminated Brazil in 2006, 2010, 2014, , and 2018 all have what in common?
Oh - lovely one-two between Vinicius, Jr. and Neymar. The final shot was blocked.
Is it that Brazil haven't conceded a goal yet?
No Brazil have conceded in this World Cup and have in the knockout stages. What haven't they accomplished in the knockout stages since the 2002 WC? They've done this plenty of times in the group matches, yet not in the last twenty years in the knockout stages
Nasty by Danilo. Should have been sent off.
The free kick is cleared out.
Is it that they've played the same starting eleven?
Perisic with a half chance there.
Brozovic booked for pulling down "My Little Pony." Steve was snickering.
No not in the last twenty years, LOL! I can give you the answer if you call uncle. It's one that doesn't come to mind
I'm off for some quick diaper duty, mate. Back in a tick.
I'm checking in again right at the end of the half. Looks to be another 0-0er. Are we up to 20 of them yet?
I'm going to have to throw in the towel on the trivia.
It's 26 0-0 halftime scores , which breaks the 2010 record of 25. Morocco vs Spain was the seventh 0-0 result of the tournament , which ties 1982, 1990, and 2010. in terms of knocks the record is five 0-0 halftimes in 2010, of which four were from Spain matches. We're at two this tournament
That haven't Brazil done in twenty years is win a knockout match vs a European side. They last did that in the 2002 final. Since then beat Ghana in the 2006 round of sixteen and their other wins against South American sides. Went out to Franc win 2006, the Dutch in 2010, thrashed by Germany in 2014 , and lost to Belgium in 2018
Second half underway
Croatia living dangerously at the beginning of the half.
I answered both your questions, but the responses may have been too detailed
Oh - that is a good one. I do remember their being beaten by European sides in recent tournaments.
My boy Raph off for your new boy Antony now - I can't say that Raph has lit the tournament alight so far.
I love the detail, Mate.
Cheers. I thought I was turning people off by my wordy responses
It looks to me like Croatia are playing for penalties now. Rodrygo on for Vinicius, Jr.
Not at all - you've got a well-deserved reputation as the house statistician.
Brozovic , like Steve, not a fan of My Little Pony.
I agree with you and Steve. I knew Brazil wouldn't get their own way and that they would have to grind this one out. That European record verifies that
Oh - yet another great save by Livakovic, this time from Paqueta.
We're getting set for the twins' appt. now, I'll sign off. Nice chatting with you!
Livkovioc, in the Coratian goal has been having a career match. Surely he will move from Dynamo Zagreb after this tournament
Cheers,. Enjoy the celebrations. Chat with you tomorrow.
CHEERS!
