The Knock-Out Rounds Begin!
Okay, boys - it all starts here! The Round of 16 is always my favorite moment of any World Cup - and it starts with a bang this year, with Greg Berhalter's young US side taking on European powerhouse side The Netherlands. The Dutch are famously known as best footballing nation never to win a World Cup, despite three final appearances. But this Dutch side is not the 1974 team of Johans Cruyff and Neeskens. So, while they are distinct underdogs, the US have a chance today. It should be thrilling. I believe that we will win! Come on!

Morning, guys - I'll look forward to the pleasure of your company. This is a big one, but I disagree with the panel in the Fox studio that it's the biggest game. That would be the 2002 quarterfinal with Germany. I'm surprised that Landon Donovan, who I believe was part of that side, as forgotten that.
Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. If you look at my FB post you will se it's a perfect day for staying inside and watching footie here and that I'm using the LVG pun a lot today
I do too, Bob. I think they say that every match is the biggest match in their history. How about U.S. vs Brazil in 1994 and like you said vs Germany in 2002. The Round of sixteen win vs Mexico ranks up there too. The U.S. vs the Argies in the quarters could be called that if those two teams win today
Bob will be pleased that the Black Cats have defeated the Evil Lions 3-0. They did it without Bailey Wright, who is away on WC duty with the Aussies and without Ticos teenager, Jewison Bennette, who has never started for the Black Cats , but has made eight sub appearances. I guess he wasn't available because he played Thursday evening with the Ticos.
I'd honestly forgotten that there were still Football League matches going on right now - what a weird season!
Agreed, mate. That was the only match in the Championship today. L1 and lower resumed yesterday with some today. Every division in Scotland resumed except the SPL. They have a surprisingly fair number of players at the WC this time.
The team news for this one:
USA
Goalkeeper: Matt Turner
Defenders: Antonee Robinson, Tim Ream, Walker Zimmerman, Sergiño Dest
Midfield: Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah
Forward: Christian Pulisic, Jesus Ferreria, Christian Pulisic
Netherlands
Goalkeeper: Andries Hoppert
Defenders: Jurrien Timber, Virgil van Dyck, Nathan Ake
Midfield: Daley Blind, Frenkie de Jong, Marten de Roon, Denzel Dumfries, Davy Klassen
Forward: Memphis Dupay, Cody Gakpo
Di you see my post on FB? I commneted my two cents worth on yours.
You listed Puli twice as forward in the naming of the starting lineup
The match is underway.
COME ON USA!
Come on, boys!
I'm enjoying the traditional LOB breakfast - bagel and cuppa. Do you remember those mornings at the Cottage during the summer of 2018?
OH! Pulki had his shot kick saved by the keeper with just the keeper to beat
I sure do ,mate. I loved those mornings
Oh my - big chance there and a save by Hoppert! Pulisic probably should have scored.
Cross from Dutch born Dest was headed away then Tyler Adams played a pass for Puli that was kick saved. Good start from the U.S
LVG is the second oldest manager in WC history. Bet you don't know who the oldest was . He was at the 2010 WC
Great start from the US side - come on!
Denzel Dumpferes tackles Antonee Robinson for a U.S. corner
Robinson nearly got in there but wins a corner.
I didn't realize that Antonee Robinson had an English accent until the pre-match interview with him. He must be another player who could have played for England.
Did you see my FB post. Your thoughts? How about the quiz question at 10:05?
He was eligible, but was not one of the three capped at England youth level
BUGGER! D 3.14 GIVES THE DUTCH THE LEAD., NICE OINE TOUCH PASSING. THEIR BEST MOVE OF THE MATCH
Bugger! Your old friend Memphis breaks American hearts, sliding a shot into the lower left corner.
1-0 Holland
Knowing LVG, the Dutch will sit on their one goal lead and Van Dyke and Nathan Are more than capable of that
Are you reading my comments? I'm not so sure. Thought I had written some fairly decent comments.
It wasn't Marcelo Bielsa, was it?
Just saw your FB post - Trooper is looking good today.
No the clue is that he wasn't from the country that he managed and he won the Euros with them against all odds.
Cheers, mate. He got soaked on walkies , so that may be why he looked like he was pouting
Ream loses track of Memphis but the effort is ambitious from a tough angle.
Memphis was wide by more than Pi yards,. That's the D 3.14 I remember from United . Feel like Deja Vu?
Surprised that Gakpo wasn't involved with the goal . Basically the difference is that the Dutch have been better on the break.Sound like LVG?
The Dutch dropping deep now, trying to manage the match LVG style.
Calling uncle on the quiz question?
The US have put some decent moves together but they're lacking a cutting edge up front. Jesus Ferreira has been anonymous.
Memphis was away there but Zimmerman tracked back well to concede a corner.
D 3.14 leads a Dutch break , but takers too long too shoot and is tackled by Walker Zimmerman for a Dutch corner
Corner by Gakpo out for another
Just letting you know that Walker Zimmerman is from our area, sort of. Comes from Lawrenceville, GA , a suburb of Atlanta. Elizabeth has an aunt that lives there. He want to college in Greenville, SC. Elizabeth has a cousin that lives there
Oh - Ferreira gave the ball away dangerously to Dumfries. I'd have him off at half-time.
John Strong already making excuses for a US loss - bit early for that.
Really - what college in Greenville? Furman? My first wife Karen was born there.
Unfortunately there aren't many options to replace Ferreira as Sargent Josh is out injuredd. Maybe Hadji Wright, but he was anonymous against England
The Dutch look well organized at the back, as you would expect from a Dutch side.
Yes It was Furman. What a small world! Elizabeth's cousin lives in nearby Greer, but works in Greenville. We visited her there last Christmas
At least from an LVG side for sure. Dull Dutch?
Sorry, David - I am trying to keep up with your comments but I'm distracted by Maddox who's having a fussy morning. I'm still thinking about another older manager.
I've never been to Greenville, but I've got a good social studies buddy who works at Furman. I don't think that Karen was that keen on growing up there.
You know, I might then just go with Pulisic as a false #9 and throw Aaronson on.
No problem, mate. Sorry if I'm being too fussy, LOL!
Good pressure from the US side now.
I agree about Puli as a false nine. The wa pretty much that vs Iran and Aaronson on for him would be a good change
I agree about Greenville. Elizabeth's cousin said she's only there because of work and said we chose the better of the two Carolinas
I think you're right that the Dutch are just assuming that Virgil and his mate Ake can absorb this pressure. Really boring approach.
A clue is that he won the Euros with this side and prior to that he managed extensively in the Bundesliga
The two Dave's are used to this with United . We have this drill memorized . Sad but true
OH! Powerful long range shot from Timmy Weah well saved by Noppert
Definitely the case: I spent some good times visiting Karen's family and visiting the University of SC in Columbia, but it's pretty red. North Carolina is a bit more purple because of the Research Triangle area.
I think this is the first first half goal the U.S. have conceded this tournament
Zimmerman’s passing scares me almost every time.
Oh - it must be the German bloke who won the Euros with Greece. Forget his name.
Oh - nice run by Dest but blocked in the end by Virgil.
Agreed, Anonymous - the US backfour is likely to cough up some chances.
I think NC is more scenic and friendler. Our area is pretty red. The only blue areas that I know of are the Research Triangle and Charlotte. There's Winston-Salem, but it may be part of that triangle
A minute of stoppage time.
The US will likely get some more chances - it's just a matter of whether they'll be able to convert them. And it strikes me that the Dutch are capable of scoring more.
And there it is - 0-2 Holland. Another old United pal Daley Blind.
BUGGER. THE U.S. WERE BLIND SIDED AS THE DUTCH GO TWO UP
Denzel Dumpferes assisted both goals scored by ex United players as the Dutch are two up at the half
Well done, Bob. You get credit. It was Otto Rehagel. He's the oldest ever WC manager when he managed Greece at the 2010 WC. He out beats LVG by about 200 days.
Too easy for the Dutch on the second goal. Sloppy defending off a throw. Dumfrees played a one two with former Saint, Davy Klaessen , then crossed for former United player, Daley Blind to score.
The second half is underway
Just what the Doc ordered. Ferreira is off. Gio Reyna on. I know you wanted Aaronson on instead, but the right idea
LVG with a double change. Ex Spud, Steve Berg-Wine on for the Roon. Koopmeiners on forDave Klaessen , the ex Saint. I think they're like for like
Tim Weah wins a corner off of Nathan Ake off a run and pass from Western McKinnie
OH! Shot from Tim Ream cleared off the line. Corner was headed on by Western McKinnie. Cleared off the line by Cody Gakpo
First save of the match from Matt Turner. Prevented an OG boy Tim ream off a pass from Dumfrees. Why isn't Dumfrees being marked better?
Cheers, mate - yes, Rehhagel. I wouldn't have come up with his name in a month of Sundays but there it is. I hated that Greek team - far too negative.
Chances at both ends as I join this match. Had to throw in some laundry at half-time.
LOL, mate! Are you saying negativity leads to longevity?
Not exact;ty a fun task, but funner than watching your mates, LVG and Rehagel?
Perhaps so. It seems to be working for LVG.
Another quiz question. When was the lastWC a CONCACAF tema failed to qualify out of the group stage. A bonus if you can name the two teams that were there that WC.
Laundry is definitely more exciting than watching an Otto Rehhagel side.
Not sure. He's survived prostate cancer saying he had 25 radiation treatments and said it was a success. I don't like him, but don't wish this on him
Nasty by Koppmeiners on Puli and booked for that
Free kick chance now for the US. This one needs to go in.
Poor delivery from Pulisic.
Oh - Memphis produces a good save out of Matty Turner.
Matt is a real Turner over of the shot from D PI that went about 3.14 inches over
Sadly , the U.S. seem to be running out of ideas
Oh - Gakpo nearly in there again.
What a world class tackle by Antonee Robinson on Cody Gakpo
End to end stuff now - it's been an entertaining match, for sure.
Did you look at the quiz question posted at 11:14? A minute later mentioned LVG surviving cancer
Hadji Wright and Brendan Aaronson about to come on . Looks like Antonee Robinson will come off injured
I'm going to say 2014 and that the teams were the US, Mexico and Jamaica.
Tim Weah and Weston McKennie coming off. I suppose that Antonee Robinson will continue.
Hadji Wright on for Tim Weah. I would have kept him on. Aaronson for Western McKinnie. I think he's carrying a knock
The Medford Messi on it straight away.
In 2014 the U.S and Mexico made it to the knockout round. Jamaica was at the WC in 1998. It was much longer ago than that. It's been really long time
The U..S sure is in a Messi predicament
Antonee Robinson tackles Dumfrees fior a Dutch corner. Dumfrees has been the MOTM so far
Van Dyke heads over off the corner from Cody Gakpo
OH! What a double save by Matt Turner .
Well, I know going back to 1990 that the US had a poor group stage and got knocked out after a real pounding. So, how about 1998 with the US, Mexico and the Ticos?
They are indeed, mate - they need a goal back soon or it's all over.
BLOODY HELL! HADJI WIRHG T SURE NOT IAN IAS HE WAS GIFTED A CHANCE . HAD JUST NOPPERT TO BEAT AND RAN IOT OUT FARF TOO WIDE,. BLCOKED FOR A CORNER WHEN HE SHOULD HAVE SCORED
WAY HAY! THE U.S PULLS ONE BACK
The corner was headed out by Nathan Ake and played wide right to Puli by Yeltsin , who had just come on for Dest and Puliu's pass went in off Hadji Wright, fooling Noppert in the Dutch goal
OH! Great sweeper keeping by Noppert as Hadji Wright was through
Mexico had made it to the round of sixteen at every WC since 1994 prior to this one, so no to 1998.In 1990 the Ticos made it to the round of sixteen in their debut WC , defeating the Jocks and Sweden in the group. Further back than that , but getting warmer
Timber clears a pass from Antonee Robinson for a U.S. corner
Noppert catches the corner from Puli
Wahay! I was dealing with a diaper blowout and so I had to run it back to see it.
Bugger! The Dutch get their two-goal advantage back and that's surely it.
BUGGER! DUMFREES SCORES A FAR POST VOLLEY TO GIVE THE DUTCH A 3-1 LEAD. A GOAL AND TWO ASSISTS AND LEFT WIDE OPEN FOR ALL THREE GOALS
Those two former United players combined along with Frankie De Jong. D 3.14 played it wide left to Daley Blind and his cross was volleyed in at the far post by Dumfrees.
Van Dyke clears off pressure from Hadji Wright for a U.S. corner off a pass from Puli. Corner headed on and the bicycle kick from Walker Zimmerman was just wide
Set pieces for the US disappointing the whole WC for all the talk of special coaches etc
3-1 is a bit flattering to the Dutch, don't you think?
BUGGER! The Pie Eater is about to come on. LVG must be licking his chops
Frankie De Jong. booked for a foul on Aaronson
I agree, Anonymous - Pulisic's deliveries have been poor.
I do , but the Dutch have been better on the break, more clinical in front of goal ,and Dumfrees left wide open for all three goals
Wonder why we didn’t see more of Reyna this tournament?
How aboyut the U.S goal, anonymous? Are you a big LVG fan, anonymous?
Bob are you calling uncle on the quiz question? It'a a bit of a tough one
Oh - Bergwijn nearly in again for the Dutch.
I am, mate - you can tell me the answer.
Half a dozen stoppage time minutes
I think he was coming back from an injury, Anonymous, wasn't that right?
More subs for the Netherlands just to ruin Dave's entire morning.
Yes it was the 1982 WC. The two CONCACAF teams were Honduras and El Salvador. The El Salvador team lost all three matches , including 10-1 to the Magyars. Honduras nearly qualified. They drew their first two matches and lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia in the last match. If they had drawn 1-1 vs the Egos then Honduras would have been tied second with hosts, Spain, and lots would have been drawn . It was that close
At least the US are knocking on the door at the end here.
I think Reyna was carrying a knock. Anonymous, I understand you think possession is a really important stat
The Dutch will have to play better to defeat the Argies. Hope it's more entertaining than the 2014 semi meeting they had
Stu Holden writing the obituary now.
It's over and the Dutch move to the quarters defeating the U.S. 3-1
I think this was progress for the U.S. after not qualifying four years ago
I agree with Lexi's comments that this young US side will get better.
I'll probably be in and out of the late one helping Kate with preparing for a visit from a college friend.
Sounds good. I'll be around tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the day. Cheers!
Next up is the Argentina v. Aussies clash. Here are the teams:
Argentina (4-3-3) E Martinez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Acuna; De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister; Messi, Alvarez, Gomez.
Substitutes: Armani, Foyth, Tagliafico, Montiel, Paredes, Pezzella, Di Maria, Rulli, Palacios, Correa, Almada, Rodriguez, Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, Lisandro Martinez.
Australia (4-3-3) Ryan; Degenek, Souttar, Rowles, Behich; Baccus, Mooy, Irvine; Leckie, Duke, McGree.
Substitutes: Atkinson, Karacic, Tilio, Wright, Maclaren, Hrustic, Mabil, Redmayne, Devlin, Vukovic, Deng, Kuol, King, Cummings.
Referee Szymon Marciniak (Poland)
Just checking in with this match at the half hour mark. Still 0-0, which will disappoint Argentina fans. This one really should be the same kind of mismatch that we saw with the earlier one between The Netherlands and the US.
GOAL! Leo Messi breaks the deadlock and now this one seems to be headed in the inevitable direction.
Argies one up at the half thanks to a goal from Messi that started from a free kick he won off a foul from Dundee United's Behich
Messi got help as the final pass came from Prem players Alexis McAllister of the Seagulls and Julian Alvarez of Citeh, who got credit for the assist
That's is for the first day of the R16, which has produced an Argentina v. Holland quarterfinal - a repeat of the 1978 final.
