Qatar 2022 - Day 9 The End of Round 2
Morning, chaps! Just like that, we're rounding off the second group of group stage matches at Qatar 2022, with matches from Groups G and H. As usual, it starts early doors with naff matches between the likes of Cameroon and Serbia (at 5am) and South Korea and Ghana (at 8am). By the time I've finished my morning routine of diaper changes and feeding the twins, I'll be settling in for Brazil v. Switzerland at 11am. It'll be fascinating to see how the Selecao get on without their talisman Neymar. Finally, the action wraps up with Portugal v. Uruguay at 2pm.
Join me if you're watching won't you?

Morning, guys - while we were sleeping, Cameroon and Serbia played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Group G play.
The Group H undercard match between Ghana and South Korea has just started.
Checking in on the match, Ghana have jumped out to a 0-2 lead over Korea through goals by Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus. That will lift them to second in the group behind Portugal, while Korea drop to the bottom of the table on 1 point.
Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started.Back from walkies in to stoppage time . Ghana two up who both goals scored during walkies
Korea in trouble as they would need a win vs Portugal and what will be a battle of wits of Portuguese managers
Inaki Williams tackle for a corner. Are his teammates Ghana go three up?
Corner from Jordan Ayew punched away by the keeper as that might have been creeping in
Ghana two up at the half
Back from taking Jacquelyn to class and it looks like a thriller as Ghana leads 3-2 with three minutes plus stoppage time remaining
Lots of goals today. So far eleven, which is more like it
WOW! Ten stoppage time minutes.
Morning, David - I'm just back from a refreshing shower to find that Gue-Sung Cho has scored a late brace to bring Korea back to 2-3 - and they're on the attack.
Ghana with a desperate rearguard action now.
Good Morning, Bob. Welcome and looks like a goal fest today
Lots of Korean crosses and Ghana have been camped ion the Korean box defending them
Ghana have hung on for a crucial win in Group H.
Someone has been sent off after the final whistle, possibly the Korean coach Paulo Bento.
It's over and Ghana hold on to win 3-2 . Korean players surround Anthony Taylor for calling full time before Korea could taker a corner . Theur manager, Paolo Bento sent off for something he said to Anthony Taylor regarding that
It certainly is a goalfest today. Let's hope it continues.
Off to run a few errands ahead of the next match
Agreed, Bob. This is more like it
Portugal chinches a place in the round of sixteen if they win the late one vs Uruguay. Tough for Korea as they face a must win vs Portugal , which is a tough ask at best
Brazil clinches a place in the round of sixteen if they defeat the Swiss in the next match
Rob Stone has just said that the earlier Cameroon v. Serbia 3-3 draw is the highest scoring fixture in the tournament so far. Uh, no, Rob - that would England's 6-2 crushing of Iran followed by Spain 7-0 drubbing of Costa Rica. Is he not paying attention?
So how are things your way this morning, David?
Actually whoever wins that match clinches a place in the round of sixteen
I'm really looking forward to seeing Brazil again. They triumphed over Serbia last week due to a spectacular brace by Spurs favorite Richarlison.
Here is the team news:
Brazil: Alisson, Eder Militao, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Alex Sandro, Lucas Paqueta, Casemiro, Fred, Raphinha, Richarlison, Vinicius Junior.
Subs: Weverton, Dani Alves, Fabinho, Alex Telles, Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Jesus, Antony, Rodrygo, Everton Ribeiro, Ederson, Bremer, Pedro, Martinelli.
Switzerland: Sommer, Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodriguez, Freuler, Xhaka, Vargas, Sow, Rieder, Embolo.
Subs: Fernandes, Zakaria, Seferovic, Steffen, Omlin, Aebischer, Fassnacht, Comert, Frei, Kobel, Schar, Shaqiri, Kohn, Jashari.
Referee: Iván Barton (El Salvador).
Back for Brazil vs the Swiss. Looking forward to the match
They're off . Hoping for more goals
We're set to go here, as the Swiss kick us off wearing all red.
Joey Barton's half brother from El Salvador, Ivan , the referee for this match
Vinicius, Jr. wins an early free kick off Widmer who is hating his job today.
I didn't know that Joey had family is El Salvador! ;-)
LOL, mate! With Joey you never know.
Bit of sloppy play in the backline for Brazil as Swiss press high.
Derek being a git with his typically annoying pronunciations
Now the Swiss have a corner
Corner from Vargas comes to nothing
Hey Guys
Just checking in. I have to tutor in a few minutes
Shadow woke me up this morning so I watched the first match of the day and the second
Two great games!!! Both sets of teams played North and South with speed....none of the East/West crap
If there is a winner in this match then that team clinches a place in the round of sixteen today
Neymar out...replaced by Fred!!
I heard on the radio that Fred was always going to start against the Swiss. Vinicius Jr would have dropped out if Neymar wasn't injured. Brazil fear Switzerland more than Serbia
Good Morning, Dave. I agree. Also, there played with plenty of pace. Great to watch and eleven goals in two matches is more like it. A shame you have to tutor today
Hiya, Dave - we did have a couple of crackers. Hope this one is, too. Bit ponderous so far.
Agreed, Dave. I think is the toughest match ion the group for Brazil. Fred for Neymar is a laugh
It's only for an hour
I took all last week off!
What a naughty boy I was
Cameroon ended their eight match losing streak today. If they had lost they would have tied Mexico with nine in a row. I think that was set in the 50 and 60s.
First chance for Richarlison to break free but his center was poor.
Rather naughty, but good form. An hour today is not bad at all.
Casemiro fouls Embolo behind
Swiss fre kick taken short then a poor cross ends an attack that would have happened
The students have the night off, as the university has gone to a Travel Day the Monday after Thanksgiving. I've got office hours to do but I'll be hiding in my office with the door closed and following the late match.
That's common sense by the university and great form on your part.I will need to pick up Jacquelyn from school , so I will miss most of the first half of the late match, but will be around for the second half
Really disappointed by Brazil so far. The Swiss are well organized but not that good. Far too cautious an approach by Tite.
I guess Tite would be okay with a draw assuming they will defeat Cameroon, but nothing can be taken for granted at this World Cup
OH! That's more like it as Jan Sommer turns around a volley from Vinicius Jr. off a great cross from Raphinha
Oh - Vinicius, Jr. should have done better with that chance.
Brazil are always overrated!
Long range shot from Raphinha straight to Jan Sommer sausage during the late Autumn
I know possession is usually meaningless , but didn't expect too see the Swiss slightly ahead in that department
News out of England camp...Henderson probably going to start for Bellingham....I hate that move!
There goes Derek with his annoying pronounciations . He's anything but a Rae of sunshine
I'm really shocked. Is that Southgate's way of saying that he thinks England is all but through or that he wasn't happy with Jude Bellingham, who I thought played decently the first two matches?
Are we heading for sweet sixteen halftime 0-0 scores ? As far as I know the record for the group stage is twenty in 2010
I guess Paolo Bento is not a fan of Premier League refs.
Roberto Carlos looking like Dave in the stands. Fat Ronny not looking impressed either
I knew Brazil and then Portugal and Uruguay would ruin the days matches
I am off to set up
TTFN
Long range shot from Eder Militao blocked for a Brazil corner
Cheers Dave . Chat with you later
It's 0-0 at the half, which is sweet sixteen for this tournament and counting
So that's the 16th 0-0 first half in the tournament. Very disappointing.
The second half is underway as Rodrygo is on for Paqueta , who was anything but the package deal
An attacking change by Tite as Bruno Guimares is on for Fred, who was recently booked.
Vargas and Rieder booked as Gelson Fernandes and Steffen on as Murat Yakin made a double substitution
Back at the hour mark - still 0-0.
GOAL!VINICIUS JR GIVES BRAZIL THE LEAD. NICE FINISH
YIKES! It's disallowed for offside. I sure didn't see it. Still 0-0
OH! It was Rich Arlison when he played the dummy . Aly Wagner spot on , stating that he was too lazy getting back on. Wonder what Steve thinks?
Now Brazil wins a free kick a foot outside the Swiss box. It's in a good position for a cross, not a shot
That is disappointing. It was a swaggering finish and interesting celebration from Vinicius, Jr. But Richarlison was in an offside position.
The final rolls of the dice from Tite. Rich Arlison and Raphinha replaced by Gabby Jesus and Antony. Pretty much like for like
Agreed, Bob. really disappointing as he was a good two yards off because he was too lazy to track back. I would be interested to know what Steve thought of that.
Sow and Embolo off for Aebescher and Seferovic. Murat Yakin with one substitution remaining
Ricardo Rodriguez with a cynical foul on Antony and should have been booked. However, poor by Antony waving the imaginary card
Are we heading for half a dozen 0-0 draws. That would toe the record for the group with one full match day remaining and one short of tying the record of an entire tournament with lots of matches remaining
GOAL! WHJAT A FINISH BY CASEMIRO . DOING UNITED PROUD
What a lovely finish from your boy Casemiro!
This one must count.
1-0 Brazil!
Nic e move that started deep in the Brazil half. and culminated with Marquinhos playing the ball wide left to Vinicius Jr. then passed to his Real teammate, Rodrygo and his clever flick made it to Casemiro for there great finish
Jan Sommer does well to tip over a shot to prevent it from being 2-0
If this result holds then Brazil will clinch a place in the round of sixteen
Now Gabby Jesus wins a free kick about thirty yards from goal
Now Gabby Jesus wins another free kick
Half a dozen stoppage time minutes
I guess the fact that Casemiro played at Real with Rodrigo and Vinicius Jr helped as they have a great understanding
OH! Close range block by Akanji from Rodrygo prevents a second Brazilian goal
It's over and Brazil win 1-0. They join France in the round of sixteen
Fitting that two of the favorites to make the final are the first to clinch a place in the round of sixteen
I'm in the office now and settling in to follow this late Group H match between Portugal and Uruguay.
The teams for this one:
Portugal (4-4 box-2): Digo Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Pepe, Mendes; Neves, Carvalho, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes; Felix, Ronaldo. Subs: Rui Patricio, Sa, Dalot, Mendes, Antonio Silva, Palhinha, Vitinha, Joao Mario, Nunez, Andre Silva, Leao, Horta, Ramos
Uruguay (3-5-2): Rochet; Gimenez, Godin, Coates; Varela, Valverde, Bentancur, Vecino, Olivera; Nunez, Cavani. Subs: Muslera, Sosa, Vina, Caceres, Rodriguez, Ugarte, Torrreira, Canobbio, De La Cruz, Arrascarta, Pellistri, Suarez, Torres, Gomez.
This one could easily run to the 17th 0-0er at half time, don't you think David?
It is indeed the 17th 0-0 draw at the half.
zzzzzzz
Back from picking up Jacquelyn . This seventeen and counting. Three short of tying the record for the group stagehand still sixteen of those matches to play
If this score holds then this group is fairly open. That would leave Portugal needing a draw to advance and a win to win the group. It would be a must win for Uruguay vs Ghana in a rematch of their 2010 quarterfinal meeting
The second half is underway. According to Bob it can't be any worse than the first half
Finally some excitement as play is stopped due to a supporter running on to the pitch
Nice run and pass from Bernie Sanders then into the side netting from Joao Felix. Bruno upset that he wasn't passed to as it wasn't a good angle for a shot
GOLA ! CR 7 HEADS PORTUGAL INTO THE LEAD
GOAL! It's that man Cristiano Ronaldo once again! Portugal 1-0 up!
It was a lengthy possession that culminated in Joao Felix passing wide left to Bruno and he crossed in. Not sure if CR 7 headed it in or completely missed it.. Not sure if Bruno or CR 7 is credited with the goal
FOTMOB has it a s a CR 7 goal. Second goal in a row scored by a United player. This one was a United combo
Some confusion over whether that is Ronny or Bruno's goal. You'd like to see an arm wrestling contest over that one, wouldn't you?
A s things stand Portugal has clinched a place in the Round of Sixteen and Uruguay with a must win vs Ghana AND needing Korea NOT to defeat Portugal unless it's by a lesser margin than Uruguay's win. Any questions?
It was just announced that the goal has been credited to Bruno. This first ever goal at a WC. Still scored by a United player
Rafael Leao on for Ruben Neves
Double substitution for Uruguay. Maxi Gomez and Biter Suarez for Charles Darwin Nunez and Thomas Edison Cavani. Are those electric and survival of the fittest?
OH! Off the post by Maxi Gomez off a pass from Pellistri , the United player , who has never played for them
Oh - Gomez thought that he'd equalized but it rocketed off the bar and went out again.
You must be delighted that two United players have scored what look to be decisive goals today. I'd be happy if, say, Marcus Rashford, were to score the winner tomorrow against the Welsh.
OH! Uruguay free kick makes it to Suarez through a crowd of players then his shot clips the side netting
To be honest my focus will be on the wanting the U.S. to defeat Iran so they can advance. It would be nice to see Rash score, but England is all but through, so I'm not as concerned about them. How about Tyler Addams or Brendan Aaronson scoring the U.S. winner tomorrow?
The Uruguayans are definitely knocking on the door here.
Uh oh - the referee is going over to check on a penalty for Portugal.
It is a penalty - Ronaldo will be irked that he was subbed off a moment ago. It'll be Bruno then.
Portugal may have a penalty. The ref sent to the monitor. I see it as the Uruguayan defender handled it as he fell down. It looked accidental , but the ref has given them a penalty. I think this is very harsh on Uruguay
I would love to see some LUFC magic tomorrow.
Would you have awarded that penalty? I would have said no.
Me too. We need every bit of magic we can get against Iran tomorrow.
Bruno steps up and....
Scores! Portugal 2-0 up and heading toward the Round of 16. They'll join France and Brazil.
GOAL ! BRUNO SCORES JORGINHO STYLE SENDING THE KEEPER THE WRONG WAY BRUN O AT THE DOUBLE PUTS PORTUGAL TWO UP IN STOPPAGE TIME
Never a pen for me, but I'm a fully paid up member of the Defenders Union.
Uruguay is in big trouble . Bottom of the group on goal difference.and have a must win vs Ghana on Thursday AND needing Portugal to defeat South Koprea. It will be tough as Ghana are not pushovers
I second that, Bob. Not sure what strikers union members such as Dave would say
Hard to believe that Uruguay has yet to score this WC
Bruno with two goals and two assists in the first two WC matches . None too shabby.
Bruno thought he had a hat-trick but the keeper with a near post kick save off his volley
Then off the post by Bruno. He's doing everything to get a hat-trick
Portugal defeats Uruguay 2-0 and joins Brazil and France in the Round of Sixteen. Uruguay in big trouble as they are bottom of the group. Must win for them vs a decent Ghana side next match
So that's it - Portugal roll on to the R-16 where they will likely play the second team in the Brazil group - maybe Switzerland?
That's it for me, mate - I'm back to work here in the office. Cheerio!
