Qatar 2022 - Day 4
Morning, chaps - today feels like the roll out of many of the major sides at Qatar 2022. I'll be fascinated to see if any of them can match the scintillating form of England and France. It all starts with Morocco v. Croatia, a fixture that will really test the ability of fans in North America to get up at 5am. That's followed more promisingly by the start of the German campaign against Japan, an intriguing match -up. At 11am, Spain get going against the Ticos of Costa Rica. Finally, one of the tournament favorites Belgium kick off against Canada in what is the first match for the Mounties since we were in college.
Join me for all the fun tomorrow, won't you?

Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. Morocco vs Croatia finished 0-0, so glad I wasn't up for that. I think Germany vs Japan is the most intriguing match of the day
Also, I'm calling uncle on your quiz question. I haven't a scooby who the other two former Premier League players are
Germany vs Japan is underway
Some of these players may be familiar with each other . Four of the Japan starters play ion thew Bundesliga and one in the second Bundesliga. It goes without saying a fair number of German starters ply their trade in the Bundesliga
Ito wins a Japan corner early on
Hiya Boys
I am here for a bit
This is a battle of the baddies of WW2!
Good signs....
Jordan Pickford on Harry Kane: "I think he's good, probably a bit sore but he's out on the grass with us today.
Ball in the net....Japan....but the flag is up!!
Surely he could have kept on
Not good attacking there!
BE AWARE
GOAL! Celtic's Maeda scores on the break for Japan, but it's disallowed for offside. Gundogan had his pocket picked in midfield by Kamada and then Japan was really quick on the break
Good Morning, Dave. I was thinking the same. The Axis Derby. Japan looks the more lively early on
Morning, boys - I am doubly happy that I didn't get up for the early one. The twins were a bit fussy at that hour but I managed to console them and we all got another couple of hours of sleep.
Don't mention the war, guys!
This match is the main one of interest to me today. Definitely not interested in the next one and will be in and out for the late one. May be out for that because its supposed tone a lovely afternoon here today
Good Morning, Bob. LOL! It will be a war out there today
I was up for the second half of the first match....thanks to Shadow needing to go out. It wasn't a bad match from what I saw.
I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it
Every two years I'm reminded of what an insufferable git Derek Rae is.
I think I came up with a fifth manager on the trivia question and am pretty confident it's correct. Not sure about that elusive sixth one.
LOL!
Agreed, Bob. My thoughts for Ally Wagner , who has to sit in the booth with him for a century plus minutes per match
There have been no free kick goals yet scored. I can only think of Messi having an attempt but nothing else
I picked these two as the top two in the group and it looks a definite contest early doors.
Messi will claim the spot kick was a freer kick even though we know better. Lew couldn't even do that
I hate the Pompous DR
I missed the trivia question. I'll take a look right now
When I do the PPP updates will alpha order for fair play be the tiebreaker? How did you do that last World Cup?
You were not quite there with Rigobert Song, mate, but there is an African guy in there. Dave, can you think of any World Cup managers who've played in the Premier League?
By the way, I'll have another cracking trivia question for later today.
OH! Rudiger heads the corner from Josh Kimmich inches wide. Why was he left so wide open?
Yes, I usually use alpha order. And of course Dave complains about that since he's a "U" for "United." Well, he could rename himself "Alex Ferguson's Red Nose" or something like that to claim top spot.
I can think of only a few. I didn't look at your comments but I am sure you have mentioned... Southgate, Klinsmann, Descamps and Hoddle
Perhaps Dave can come up with two remaining managers
Correct, Dave. Those are the four I mentioned. Can't think of the other two
Technically it's now eight former Premiership players that have managed at the World Cup
I was thinking the other day about English League Champs and I have come up with my own trivia question.
Can you name the six clubs since WW2 that have successfully defended their title
OH! Nice save by Gonda from Josh Kimmich off a cheeky back heel from Gundogan, then the offside flag is raised
I know of Liverpool, Man United, Citeh, and Chelsea for starters. I think the other two are Wolves and Pompey
Roberto Martinez
I expect Costa Rica to be this group's makeweights and am not impressed with Spain this time out
Roberto never played in the top flight . I think he played for the Swans and Wigan in L1. Sound about right?
Yes, those are the four "easier" ones to get, although I was only able to name Southgate, Deschamps and Klinsmann off the top of my head. One is an African manager and the other is a Spanish manager. I'll give you until noon to guess those and then I'll post the next quiz then.
I think that is right, mate.
VAR checking for a penalty for hand ball on Endo .That would be rather harsh. Thankfully common sense prevailed
Well done David
Pompey retained in 59
United have retained in 57, 94, 97, 00, 01, 08 and 09
Liverpool have retained in 77, 80, 83 and 84
Chelsea retained in 06
Wolves retained in 59
City have retained in 19 and 22
For what it's worth, these are the teams on display in this one.
Germany: Neuer, Sule, Rudiger, Schlotterbeck, Raum, Kimmich, Gundogan, Gnabry, Muller, Musiala, Havertz.
Subs: Ginter, Kehrer, Goretzka, Fullkrug, Gotze, Trapp, Klostermann, Brandt, Hofmann, Sane, Gunter, ter Stegen, Adeyemi, Kotchap, Moukoko.
Japan: Gonda, Sakai, Itakura, Yoshida, Nagatomo, Tanaka, Endo, Junya Ito, Kamada, Kubo, Maeda.
Subs: Kawashima, Yamane, Taniguchi, Shibasaki, Doan, Mitoma, Minamino, Morita, Tomiyasu, Asano, Machino, Ueda, Schmidt, Soma, Hiroki Ito.
Bayern teen, Musiala, was eligible to play for England. That's another one they let get away. Will they regret that?
Thanks, Dave. Those were the only ones that came to mind. I was thinking of the Gunners, but realized they hadn't , so those were the only remaining ones by process of elimination
Martinez was one of the first ones that I thought of as well, but David's right that he never actually played in the top flight.
I was telling the boys to join on here but Tom complained it was old style!! What a plonker! He said...."you have to reload to read the comments...why doesn't automatically update...so old school!
Again...what a plonker
Germany go close!
I'm not impressed by Germany yet. Japan could get a result here.
Pompey...the only club south of the River Thames to win the league!!
How about Fernando Hierro? I thought he played a season with Bolton and named at the last minute in 2018?
How many Concacaf teams do you think will go through?
I'd love to have Tom on here. I've been trying to encouraging some of the others on the PPP to chip in here, too. Doug Fusella, for example, sends me Facebook Messenger messages during matches but never jumps on the blog.
Ref has called something. Did he point to the spot or a dive
I think he pointed to the spot....def pen
PENALTY ! GERMANY . JAPANESE KEEPER, GONDA, CALLED FOR A TRIP IN THE BOX
The Germans have a penalty. It seemed a bit soft to me. VAR checking it of course.
I think the keeper took him out
Germany takes the lead!
Citeh man Gundogan to take...
and scores! Germany go one up!
Gundogan to take. Former Saint, Yoshida trying to delay the penalty.
GOAL! GUNDOGAN SCORES, SENDING GONDA THE WRONG WAY
A bit of a Panenka there, very close to the keeper.
I thought the penalty was the correct call and a deserved lead based on the past quarter of an hour
Did all the managers get named?
I have Germany winning the group, defeating Morocco or Croatia in the round of sixteen, and losing to Brazil in the quarters. Fairly easy path to the quarters
I just named Fernando Hierro. If he's correct then there's one remain ing, which according to Bob is an African manager
Find a man with the cross!!
My concern for England is that they will probably face France in the quarters, which is the one team they would want to avoid.
France did fairly well with those crosses yesterday. The player injured in the Aussie goal was replaced by his brother.
Germany trying to walk the ball in the net and failed too get a shot off.
Just reread my listing...damn typo
Pompey retained in 50
Josh Kimmich with a shot that lands in the cheap seats
I'm surprised Tommy Ya Soo, of the Gunners, and Mitoma of the Seagulls aren't starting
I’m on my phone now while watching the twins just to prove that you can post from your phone. I’m even using the dictation feature.
Fernando Hierro is spot-on for number five. I had forgotten that he’d played in England.
Well done, Bob, albeit anonymously, LOL!
But....you are anonymous!
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes, which is not music to our ears
LOL, Dave!
Yes, I don’t know I’m stealth mode on my phone. I suppose I’m not signed in.
I'm off to take Trooper walkies to avoid missing much of the second half
I'm back on the laptop - are you getting dizzy?
Enjoy your walkies, mate.
2-0 Germany has Havertz taps in from close range!
Two nil...Haveritz taps it in.... all came from an awful clearance
Probably offside
He's got to be offside, surely.
Half time
German lead in goals
they are tied in disallowed goals
And that's half time - 1-0 to the Huns so far. No surprise there.
Five minutes into the second...still 1-0
Second half starting up - Japan are still in this one.
That Musiala run wasn’t a million miles away from Ricky Villa’s at the 1981 FA Cup final replay.
Mitoma , of the Seagulls , on for the veteran Nagatomoa and Maeda, of Celtic , replaced by Asano, of Bochum, increasing the number of Japanese Bundesliga players on the pitch by one
Back after walkies with trooper and seeing five deer. Looks like I didn't miss much other than disallowed goal while on the bog
OH! Shot from Gundogan clips the outside of the post
Gundogan hits the outside of the post!
Musiala surely would have made them England squad. A shame they couldn't cap him
I love seeing the deer when we're out and about.
I can text you all some pictures I took just a few minutes ago.
Jonas Hofmann Mullered on for Thomas and Goretzka on for Gundogan, the scorer
Asano with a shot blocked by Rudiger for a corner
Oh - great saving block there from Gnabry!
Close range block by Gonda from Jonas Hofman then a nice save by Gonda from Gnabry
Then a double save from Gnabry
Very scaring driving with a lot of deer around. You see them being hit all the time. They cause mega damage
How did Japan not score there!!!
OH! Great save by Neuer from Ito then the rebound blasted over. Should have been tied up
Oh - great save, Neuer but Ito should have scored.
I know of two that have been killed on the highway since I moved here. Thank fully none in our subdivision. You are correct that they can cause tons of damage to a car. One black bear was run over on the highway this Summer too.
GOAL ! TIED UP
Japan have equalized!!
Deserved!
Yes! Japan do finally score! It was coming.
Doan, of Freiburg scored on the rebound after Neuer save d from former Pool striker, Minnie Minnow. Nice move
Agreed, Dave. Japan have played well this half
If this ends in a draw then Spain would go top with a win vs the Ticos
A double substitution by Flick about to occur Gotze on for Kai the Guy and Fullkrug on for Musiala. I'm surprised at the second change because Musiala has played well.
Yoshida cuts out a pass from Gnabry for a Japan corner
Corner headed over by Rudiger who out jumped Gonda, the keeper.
Jonas Hofman wins a German corner
I'm really hoping that Japan can hang onto what would be a great draw for them. It would give them a chance.
Am I right that Goan was a second half supersub?
GOAL ! ITO GOIVES JAPAN A COME FROM BEHIND 2-1 LEAD
Fabulous - I remember my time in Japan, which included the 2002 World Cup, very fondly. I can only imagine how excited my Japanese friends are about this scoreline.
I was in the loo.....wow!
Sorry Asano, not Ito. A comedy of errors for Germany who fell asleep off a routine long free kick at the back . Kept onside by Germany whose offside trap was a shambles then beat Neuer too easily at the near post. Nice long free kick from Itakura , Hofman's Gladbach teammate
BTW, did you guys read that the ex Ipswich, Liverpool, Everton and England forward David Johnson passed away today
He was 71
You and Freddy on the beach
To answer Bob's question both scorers are off the subs bench. Both scorers with Bundesliga clubs and the assist from a Bundesliga player, just to add insult to injury
Japan want a pen...we were able to see because of a replay
Ruddi looks guilty
No I didn't know about that. Sad news and a short innings for the former striker
I guess Germany should beat the Ticos then would need a least a draw vs Spain , which is not a given. Japan could even win the group
Moukoko on for Gnabry
Into stoppage time. Dave's lucky seven stoppage time minutes
Tommy Ya Soo down for the Japanese. Not good news for Gunners supporters
I'm sure Hansi wants to Flick off his players.
BOOM BOOM!
Goretzka took too long to shoot in a great scoring position
Sheer desperation as Rudiger shoots well wide from thirty yards out
Gotta take Kath to work as this one finish up.
I'll be listening to 5Live on the road
TTFN
OH! Just wide by Goretzka as Fullkrug headed down a long ball
Cheers Dave. See you later
Stupid foul by Minnie Minnow on Rudiger. Neuer up for the free kick
Free kick from Kimmich headed and wide by Nick Zule. Actually well blocked for a corner
Gonda punches away the corner. It's over and Japan defeats Germany 2-1. Players going bonkers
That's it - a fantastic win for Japan and another huge upset at this World Cup.
I've just come back from making my brekkies and there are two pratts talking about basketball. Time to switch over to Fox.
Next up is Spain v. Costa Rica. The Ticos will take some inspiration from Japan.
Elland Road favorite Tyler Adams on the telly now.
Sounds like the Harry Kane ankle scare is over. Phew!
Team news for the next one:
Rodri starts at centre-back for Spain, with Marco Asensio as a false nine.
Costa Rica’s team includes the exciting teenager Jewison Bennette as well as a few more familiar faces: Keylor Navas, Joel Campbell and Celso Borges.
Spain (4-1-2-3) Simon; Azpilicueta, Rodri, Laporte, Albi; Busquets; Gavi, Pedri; Torres, Asensio, Olmo.
Substitutes: Balde, Carvajal, Fati, Eric Garcia, Guillamon, Koke, Llorente, Morata, Pino, Raya, Sanchez, Sarabia, Soler, Torres, Williams.
Costa Rica (possible 5-4-1) Navas; Martinez, Fuller, Duarte, Calvo, Oviedo; Campbell, Borges, Tejeda, Bennette; Contreras.
Substitutes: Alvarado, Chacon, Hernandez, Lopez, Matarrita, Ruiz, Salas, Sequeira, Torres, Vargas, Venegas, Waston, Wilson, Zamora.
Referee Mohammed Abdulla (UAE)
Just back from a refreshing shower. I'll admit it - it's my first in a couple of days. The hygiene always gets a bit iffy during the group stage.
Great chance for Olmo! Spain should be ahead. Pedri, 40 yards from goal in the inside-left channel, floated a glorious pass over the defence to find Olmo on the right edge of the six-yard box. He cushioned a volley across Navas and a few yards wide of the far post. He may have seen it late as it dropped over the defender’s head, but it was still a terrific chance.
GOAL! Spain have the early goal that they would have wanted through Dani Olmo.
The Ticos will have to come out of their shells and find a Plan B.
2-0 Spain! Busquets picks out Jordi Alba who delivers a great center to Asencio who finishes sharply beyond Keylar Navas.
The Ticos are up against it now.
I was away tending to the twins and missed Fernan Torres slipping in a third goal from the spot. This match is over.
Half-time - Spain are 3-0 up and cruising.
We're back on for the second half here - for all intents and purposes, this match is over.
4-0! Too easy. Like a training routine.
Now 4-0 . Ferran Torres with an easy second
I guess when I called the Ticos makeweights I was being the master of understatement
Full-time - 7-0! Wallop! So we can safely add Spain to the list of impressive sides.
The Ticos were a bit of an embarrassment to CONCACAF. Hopefully the Canadians can give Belgium a match today.
Back from a trip to Bell Mountain on a lovely day. Belgium surprisingly being held 0-0 by Canada 34 minutes in
Agreed, Bob. The Ticos this time out embarrassing CONCACAF
According to FOTMOB Alphonso Davies missed a penalty in the eleventh minute. Canada still yet to score in the WC at the fourth attempt
Thanks, Bob. I think I'm going to have lunch at the half. It's a lovely day and surprisingly in the 60s today.
Var checking for a possible penalty to the Canucks
Nothing doing . Play on.
Other than the Ticos CONCACAF teams have represented the region well.
GOAL! BAT BOY GIVES BELGIUM THE LEAD
GOAL! The Batboy against the run of play breaks Canadian hearts. The Canucks will rue those missed chances. They're 0-1 down now.
This was not a typical Belgian goal. A long ball from Toby found Bat Boy who got behind Kamal Miller and scored with a well placed finish with just Borjan to beat
Into stoppage time
A quintet of those minutes
Oh - another chance spurned by Buchanan. That's got to go in.
OH! Well over by a lading Buchanan form close range off a pass from Rich Lareya
Canada wins a corner off of Carrasco
Half-time - Well, that was just highway robbery. One long ball over the top and the Belgians are in the lead, while they've weathered most of the goal chances, including a penalty miss, in this first half.
The ref blows for halftime fifteen seconds early and Belgium one up at the half . Canada still in it after a good first half performance
Back for the second half. A lot of chatter during the interval about that second penalty that Canada should have had. All to play for in this half.
I know Belgium made a double substitution, so Roberto have had words at the half
Meunier booked for an elbow the back of Junir Hoilett's head
Junior Holiett pressures Dendoncker in to conceding a corner to Canada
Kyle Larin for Junior Hoilett and 39 year old Atiba Hutchinson.replaced by One. Both are attacking changes
I wonder if Atiba Hutchinson is the oldest World Cup debutant.
Leo Trossard on for Eden Hazard
This match is wide open right now - it could easily swing either way. I'm actually surprised that the Belgians haven't tried to bolt the door.
Belgium really have been rubbish today - they don't deserve this win.
