Qatar 2022 Preview - Group D
Prospects: Didier Deschamps' French side come into this tournament as reigning champions and armed with the most fearsome front-line in world football. They're a lock to be around in the latter stages of the tournament. Their principal rivals in Group D are likely to be Denmark, who have a Christian Eriksen as their midfield general and a host of players in their squad with Champions League experience. The other two sides in the group are likely to be just making up the numbers. Tunisia, to their credit, did top their qualifying group before then defeating Mali to secure their sixth berth in the finals. But they have essentially the same side that failed to get out of an easy group at Russia 2018. Australia took the scenic route to qualifying, covering more territory than Magellan in their quest for a tournament spot. The Socceroos are always entertaining but you'd fancy Karim Benzema and Kilyan Mbappe to open them up, wouldn't you?
One to Watch: Valencia-based Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney is the kind of box-to-box midfielder that every winning side needs. His engine allows Eriksen and Hojberg to work their magic further forward.
Most Likely to see Red: Australia's Aaron Mooy has learned the dark arts of chippy midfield play north o the border at Celtic. Two yellows seems an obvious fate for him.
Most Likely to Attempt a "Panenka:" It has to be one of the French fancy dans, doesn't it? If he weren't injured, I've give Paul Pogba the nod. In his absence, I'll go with Mbappe.
Worst Haircut in the Group: France's Antoine Griezmann sports a different Instagram-ready disaster every month. I'm expecting a pink mullet this time around.
Key Match: November 26 - France v. Denmark (11am EST)
Blue Devil's Crystal Ball Says: I'd love to see a surprise in this group, but my head says otherwise.
