Qatar 2022 - Day 2 - Come on, England!

Morning, chaps! We're on to Group B - England and the US' group - this morning. When the draw was made, my immediate hope was that England would win all three matches and that the US would beat both Iran and Wales, thus ensuring that both sides would get through to the Round of Sixteen. It all starts this morning with England taking on Iran in the opener and culminates with the US taking on Wales in probably the most crucial match in the group. In between the Dutch get started with their Group A work against Senegal.

See you early doors! Come on England!

Gareth has announced his line up

Pickford

Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Shaw

Bellingham, Rice, Mount

Sterling, Kane and Saka

I knew he would pick this side. I wouldn't necessarily start Mount and I would definitely start Foden instead of Sterling

Proof me wrong Mason and Raheem

Morning, Dave - how are you feeling about this one?

7:11 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm cautiously hopeful. I know what you're saying about the line-up. There are at least three players - Maguire, Sterling and Mount - who are out of form and don't usually play for their clubs. That's produced a lot of chatter this week about how Gareth is too loyal to these players. It's a gamble for sure but his argument is that these players have done it for him before.

7:13 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

By the way, it's Bukayo Saka and not Raheem Sterling who's keeping Phil Foden out of the side as Foden usually plays down the right and Sterling plays down the left side. Razza is keeping Grealish out of the side.

7:15 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

At least Gareth has gone with a 4-4-3 rather than a 5-4-1, which is what I was fearing he might do. That means we get an extra attacking middie in Mason Mount rather than an extra center back. Still - why do we need both Bellingham and Rice when playing against Iran?

Good Morning, Bob and Dave. Up on a chilly start to the day. Rooting for the Three Lions and the U.S.

The Fox coverage keeps going to adverts in the middle of segments. They had just introduced the commentary team and then cut to an ad.

I'm trying to figure out a walkies routine where I don't miss too much action. I really don't feel like going out in the cold right now,.

Morning, David - welcome! Hope you had a brilliant anniversary celebration with Elizabeth yesterday.

7:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I feel you - I'm trying to do the same with the diaper and feeding schedule.

7:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Elizabeth is watching GMA. I'll switch around 7:45. My criticism of Gareth's lineup is starting Maguire and Pickford., but it wouldn't start Dier either. England's defense may be their weakness this tournament

7:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Another thing I've noticed is the lack of English voices on this coverage. In World Cups past, we typically got at least one English pundit on the panel (e.g., Steve McManaman). Now it's just a parade of Americans, even for the England match.

7:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't think England has any easy opponents in this group, so Gareth has to line up in a similar manner to what he would against the top sides.

7:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think there was a female English pundit yesterday, but I won't be watching them this WC. Infantino and Qatar criticized on GMA, albeit really briefly.

7:24 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now FS1 seem to have gone to the preview show rather than the live coverage. I hope they sort this out before the match starts!

7:24 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

He's got the same person on today, but I'm sorry to sound sexist, but no one knows her. They're used to seeing pundits that they remember watching play. No one watches the women's club game.

7:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just a reminder that Gareth will be pitting his wits against former United assistant, Carlos Queroz. I think he was in charge of the Persians the last WC and they nearly qualified for the round of sixteen in the same group as Spain and Portugal. They were one goal away from making it, so they are decent opponents.

7:29 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Phew! The regular show is back on now instead of the canned preview, which was already on at 6am.

7:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure if I'll be around for the late match. It's supposed to be a lovely day today and we may take advantage of that

7:34 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's a decent female pundit than yesterday. It looks like Sue Smith today

7:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice interview with Harry Kane and now the panel is talking about him. Lexi calls it a gift from the soccer Gods.

7:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm back after diaper duty and a change of clothes for Mr. Maddox. The twins are ready for the match now!

7:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Teams are in the tunnel now - one of the central dramas is that Harry Kane is two goals behind Wayne Rooney in the all time scoring chart. I hope he breaks the record today with a hat-trick. Come on!

Well done, mate - nothing worse than an emergency trip to the bog during the match. Cue the Nocito Curse.

7:58 AM

Well done , Bob. a pun for the match his that I ran to the bog to make it back in time for kick off.

BOOM BOOM, literally and figuratively!

7:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL! Cheers, Bob!

7:59 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Apparently the stadium isn't full for this one. Looks like a decent contingent of England fans in the crowd.

7:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Maddox, like Yours Truly making sure to be match fit.

8:00 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Interestingly the Iranian players didn't sing the anthem. We're all ready to go here. Come on, England!

8:00 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ian Darke said that none of the Iranian players sang their national anthem as a protest

Come on England! Three Lions flying off my porch!

I reckon I can get a half in before work.

8:01 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve will not be pleased to be listening Ian with his Darke commentary

8:01 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good Morning, Steve. Glad you can get in a half,.

8:02 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Iran dropping deep right from the off here. England will have to find ways to break them down. Early corner now.

8:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ian said this is what its will look this match. I think that's true for all three of England's group matches as they win an early corner.

8:03 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Trippier swings a long ball in and Maguire claims that he was impeded. Should be a VAR check!

8:03 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Corner too high for everyone and a pathetic attempt by Maguire to win a penalty, but VAR checking. It looks a fair shout as he was rugby tackled

8:04 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That will be at least an early wake-up call for the referee.

8:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nothing doing. Ian said this ref sent off five players in a matching Brazil. Not sure he's an amusing type.

8:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ian stated that this is Carlos Queroz's third consecutive World Cup with Iran. His current spell didn't start until two months ago

8:05 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

How was that not a pen!!!

8:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A reminder that as per FIFA rules every officiating crew must be fluent in English

8:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Dave. I guess rugby holds are allowed this tournament

8:06 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Should have been a pen. I think if you lock arms around an opponent it's foul. If it's in the box, it's a pen.

8:06 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

There doesn't seem to be any attacking threat from Iran here. More evidence that two defensive middies was unnecessary.

8:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Saka wins a free kick off solo run

8:07 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Keeper misses the cross off a cross from Trippeier off a a quick free kick then Harry Kane shoots into the side netting from a narrow angle

8:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think the U.S. and Wales will play the same way against England

8:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Two Iranian players down; the keeper and a defender . Did they collide?

8:09 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Morning, Steve! Welcome!

8:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

This looks serious as there appears to be blood on the gauze coming out of the keeper's mouth.

8:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OUCH! That would have been a great defensive play in American Football.

8:10 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A lot of Iranian supporters booed their national anthem as part of the protests going on in that country

8:10 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The keeper may have to come off.

8:11 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm never getting a full half in unless Al-Flapp gets subbed quick-like.

8:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't mean to be cynical, but if he can't continue stretcher him off and sub him. This is the first World Cup where concussion subs don't count. That means both teams will be allowed an extra substitution. They can check him out in the dressing room or take him to the hospital where he can be tended to

8:13 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

If this guy continues shoot on sight rule should be in play.

8:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The training methods for keepers in the Middle East seems rather bizarre. So much for hiring foreign coaches to change that

8:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Steve. Ecuador should have done that more often than they did yesterday

8:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

This keeps looks really dazed. He needs to be tested early and often

8:15 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I hope the ref is adding the minutes.

8:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Play finally resumes. Iran took four keepers to the word Cup. I hate to think how wretched the fourth choice one is if the starter is this poor. The keeper signaled to be substituted. Carlos Queroz is none too pleased

8:17 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Keeper's down again - get him off!

8:17 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

This is ridiculous. They knew he was concussed. What the Hell!

8:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think they're time wasting to put England off. Its shouldn't take ten minutes to decide the keeper can't continue. This could have been done in two or three minutes

8:18 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Doctor Joe explaining the concussion sub rule. We already know that. He needs to explain what the rule is for wasting time like the Iranians are

8:19 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Stretcher him off from behind the goal!

8:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

There will be ten to a dozen stoppage time min utes. This really ridiculous and making a further mockery out of this tournament

8:20 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Let's hope England can get back into their groove quickly.

8:20 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Iranians win a free kick as they are starting to attack

8:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jahankbash, the Seagulls reject with a wretched free kick.

8:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree with Ian that England is playing too slow. They need to attack this type of team with pace

8:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

So much for the ball boys getting the ball quickly to players . Seems like the officiating will be biased towards all the Middle East sides

8:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jahankbash Shaw was booked for nasty foul

8:25 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Early yellow card now Jahanbakhsh

8:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Karimi with as cynical trip. That should have been a booking

8:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Taremi , the Porto forward , will probably be the Iranian attacking threat, Saka shoots straight to the keeper.

8:27 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Tame effort from Saka.

8:27 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Not happy with this ref. There is only one Iranian yellow and there should be 4. 1 or 2 for time wasting.

8:28 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Mount should have done better.

8:29 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! A Shot was Mounted into the side netting . Nice one touch passing and into the side netting off a pass from Saka

8:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Spot on Steve. This ref is having a mare. So far the precedent being set is that poor sportsmanship is permitted and encouraged

8:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Saka tackled for a corner

8:31 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sterling wins a corner - come on!

8:31 AM

OH! Header from Maguire off the bar from a Trippier corner

8:32 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - off the bar from Mags!

It was nice one touch England passing with Sterling Shaw passing it wide left and Hey Just it was headed in by a nice cross from the left

8:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed with all of you. England needs to score and more often and Iran will have to attack to avoid opening with a defeat

8:37 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Lovely cross from Shaw, was it?

8:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Iran may continue their tactics thinking they're in the match and try to nick an equalizer.

8:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yes it Shaw was , Steve

8:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

As long as it's 1-0 I don't see Queroz changing much until the final quarter of an hour

8:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It would be nice to see England go two up before halftime

8:42 AM

WAY HAY! SAKA PUTS ENGLAND TWO UP

8:43 AM

8:43 AM

Not sure why the Iranians are protesting. Corner headed down by Maguire and a superb finish by Saka

8:44 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Given!!

8:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Iranians want pushing called . I don't see anything but poor defending off the corner and Doc Joe seems to concur. VAR checked. Nothing doing

8:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yes! What a strike from Bukayo! England 2-0 up and cruising.

8:45 AM

WAY HAY STERLING PUTS ENGLAND THREE UP EARLY IN STOPPAGE TIME

8:46 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Make that 3-0! It's party time for the Three Lions!

8:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It started from the back and nice one touch passing as Sake passed wide right to Harry Kane and Abel to see England go three up with a Sterling volley

8:47 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

14 added minutes!

8:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought this would be a much tighter match.
YIKES! FOURTEEN bloody stoppages time minutes. Iran now wishing it wasn't that much

8:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You have to admit that Gareth has been completely justified in his gambles so far. Maguire has been a threat from every corner, should have scored from one and set up Saka with another. And now Sterling has scored.

8:48 AM

I was thin king of picking Iran to be group runners up. Glad I didn't

8:50 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Foden and Grealish off the bench at the hour mark. This could end up a tennis score for England.

8:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If England were at their best today this would be far worse for Iran

8:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It could be like Panama when England took their foot off the gas in the second half

8:52 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I think that Iran are better than this; Quieroz must be faulted for a too defensive plan for today. Now they could get knocked out by Wales on Friday.

8:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Iran with a single attempt at goal. I put this as much on Queroz as the players

8:54 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I really don't want England to come out and just go through the motions in the second half

Play as if it is 0-0

8:54 AM

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time: England in dreamland at 3-0 up.

9:00 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This is exactly the kind of marker that I was hoping that England would put down today. Of course, the naysayers will say, "It's only Iran." But they weren't saying that about Iran before the match, were they? It says to the likes of France, Argentina and Brazil - go and on and try to catch us.

9:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

One sub for Iran at the half - Kanami coming on.

9:15 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And we're back underway. Keep the momentum up, boys!

9:15 AM

Iran tried to punk England right from kickoff. That's the danger. I want a clean sheet.

9:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Lovely - Kane wins another dangerous free kick and the Iranian gets a yellow. Kieran Trippier territory?

9:18 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Kane has stayed down now - that's not good. He might have to come off.

9:19 AM

9:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Iran seem to have sorted themselves out with the corners at this point. They were all over the shop in the first half.

9:27 AM
