Qatar 2022 - Day 3
Morning, chaps - Day 3 is the first one with four matches throughout the day. The action starts at the crack of dawn with Lionel Messi and Argentina's opener against Saudi Arabia. I'll be honest - unless the twins wake me up, I'm going to sleep through this one. It's followed by two fairly rubbish matches that really should have been scheduled in the middle of the night - Denmark v. Tunisia at 8am and Mexico v. Poland at 11am. Finally, the current World Champions France kick off against the Socceroos at 2pm.
I'll be catching up on errands and grading through much of the day but join me if you're watching.

Good Morning everyone. YIKES! The first upset of the World Cup as the Saudis defeated the Argies 2-1. Maybe we should have watched
What a shocker!!
That could move them into England's half of the draw....and they would play France
Hi there, guys - I'm just settling in. The twins slept soundly so I missed the Argies' shock defeat. I woke up just now to several FB messages from my buddy Anthony in Australia who watched the match in awe.
I recorded the match so I will definitely watch it this evening. A very pro Tunisian crowd in the second match
The teams on display for this one:
Denmark: Kasper Schmeichel, Joakim Andersen, Simon Kjaer (c), Andreas Christensen, Joakim Maehle, Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg, Thomas Delaney, Christian Eriksen, Andreas Skov Olsen, Kasper Dolberg, Rasmus Kristensen
Tunisia: Aymen Dahmen, Ali Abdi, Montassar Talbi, Yassine Meriah, Dylan Bronn, Mohamed Draeger, Aissa Laidouni, Ellyes Skhiri, Anis Ben Slimane, Youssef Msakni (c), Issam Jembali
Mexico vs Poland becomes more significant due to that early upset. That could be for control of the group
This match so far has then feel of a cup match at a lower division ground
Long range shot from German Born Drager took a weird deflection off Christensen and was just inches over.
Then Msakni heads just over at the near post from the corner
That would have been a popular goal as Masakni has played eight and a half of there last nine seasons in Qatar
First Danish threatening attack and cross from the left headed out for a corner
Corner from Eriksen headed on by Christensen then cleared then Kristensen wins a free kick
Nice teasing free kick from eriksen , but nobody could connect. I guess it musty have take a nick off a Tunisian player as it's a corner
I thought Tunisia had taken the lead but it was flagged offside. It started with a clearance from the back and the player was an inch in the Danish half or else he would have been on and given Tunisia a surprise lead
Kristensen becomes the first player booked. Bob will not be pleased. The [player's reaction caused the booking as much as anything else
Skov Olsen tackled for a corner off a long ball from the back
Corner frizzes through the box and makes it out to Hoy Berg who shoots powerfully, but straight at the keeper
Half-time - 0-0 between Denmark and Tunisia. Still not seeing any real threats for England.
Fox fourteen seconds late for sec and half kickoff as the Tunisians won a corner straight from the off, but nothing came of it. Still 0-0
We have yet to see Brazil, France, Belgium, and Portugal. Also some teams peak later in the tournament while england did show defensive weaknesses that better teams will punish. Still did wide open, IMHO
Laidouni ene ton a solo run to win a corner then Drager with another shot deflected for a corner that nearly went in . Then they win a third consecutive corner. Then Dylan Broinn with a shot blocked for a corner
Warren Barton and the other announcer being really biased towards the Tunisians, making them look far superior to what they really are
Skov Olsen scores, but it's disallowed for offside
Definite offside as Damsghaard was a good couple of yards offside as he passed to Maeler,
The Dames about to make a triple substitution
Matty Jensen of the Bees for Kjaer. Dolbehg and Skov Olsen off for Cornelius and Lindstrom
Slitti for Slimane, who was a former Danish youth international before switching over too Tunisia. Rather interesting
OH! Long range shot from Eriksen well turned around for a corner off a pass from former Bees teammate, Matty Jensen
OH! Off the post as the corner from Eriksen was headed on by Damsgard and came off the post as Cornelius missed it from a foot out. Should have given the Danes the lead
Now the Tunisians want a penalty for hand ball. I think they have a shout. Var with a super brief check. Nothing doing
They have acoirner that eludes everyone and sails out of play
Sorry. The corner was headed on by Christensen
Matty Jensen booked for a late lunge
Double Tunisian substitution. Qatar based Msakni and Jabali on for Kuwait based Khnessi and Hannibal , the Tunisian hair bear , on loan to the Brummies from Man United
Khnessi booked for a late lunge on Matty Jensen
Drager and Laidouni off for Kechida and Saissi, another Qatar based player
This one could be decided in stoppage time
Denmark wins a corner as there are a quintet of stoppage time minutes
Coming down to the end of this one - still 0-0.
The goalkeeper just fails to prevent a deflected Danish shot going out for a corner
What's this now? Ref checking something on the screen. Possible penalty.
The Tunisian goalkeeper does well to opus away a swerving cross/shot then the Danes win a corner. Now VAR checking for a possible hand ball that happened a couple of minutes earlier
No penalty in the end.
Nothing doing. I didn't see it , so I guess the right call. Now I do but not much that the defender could have done to prevent it
Meler tackled for a corner. After that it should be over
Corner from Eriksen headed by Cornelius straight to the keeper
Not sure why so much time is being added. The VAR check only took about a minute
It's over and on a day of surprises the Danes are held 0-0
If Tunisia defeats the Aussies and the Danes lose to France then the Danes will have a must win vs the Aussies.Second place could come down to goal difference
That 0-0 draw presents a real opportunity for France to put their stamp on the group with a comprehensive win over the Socceroos.
I've switched over to the next one on the Fox channel - Mexico v. Poland
Thanks for trying the trivia, David. You were spot on with the first three but not with the other two.
You're welcome .I switched over too. I still want to attempt the other three answers to the trivia
With that upset win by the Saudis the next match takes on more significance than we expected. The winner will be in a good position to at least qualify
I completely agree with you, mate. The Argies could be in real trouble if there is a positive result for either Poland or Mexico in this one.
The team line-ups for this one:
Mexico: Guillermo Ochoa, Jorge Sanchez, Hector Moreno, Cesar Montes, Jesus Gallardo, Edson Alvarez, Hector Herrera, Luis Chavez, Hirving Lozano, Henry Martin, Alexis Vega
Poland: Wojciech Szczesny, Kamil Glik, Jakub Kiwior, Matty Cash, Bartosz Bereszynski, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Piotr Zielinski, Sebastian Szymanski, Nicola Zalewski, Jakub Kaminski, Robert Lewandowski
We're away in the stadium made of shipping containers. This should be an evenly matched game.
Will Robert Lewandowski finally come good at a World Cup? We'll soon see.
Huge Mexican contingent here tonight. Steve and I ran into a large group of El Tri fans in Japan when we went to the Italy v. Mexico match in 2002. It reinforced that there are wealthy Mexicans. We're used to thinking of the Mexicans who emigrate to the US.
I'll have another cracking trivia question from 606 on the blog tomorrow night.
Hello, Bob. Sorry for being late. I was on the phone with an attorney dealing with a bogus traffic ticket I received at the Atlanta airport on Sunday picking up Melanie
I'm not counting out the Argies out yet. They lost to nine man Cameroon in the opening match in 1990 and made the final, as did West Germany in 1982 vs Algeria and Italy vs the Irish in 1994. Last Word Cup France were mediocre during the group stages, so it's hard to judge this early in the tournament. It all comes down to when the heavyweights face off.
Still 0-0 at little past the midway point of the first half. A really scrappy match where neither side has done much
Oh - nearly an opener there for Vega.
OH! Vega heads across inches wide as Su Su Sudio was beaten. He out jumped Matty Cash.
I was just thinking that, David. You can't rule them out yet, but it's a horrible start against probably the weakest team in the group. Now they've got two very competitive matches against Mexico and Poland to come.
I'm still trying to get my head around Matty Cash playing for Poland.
Su Su Sudio completely misses a long ball , under pressure from Vega and is bailed out as it's cleared for a corner . I guess it was offside as Su Su Sudio takes the free kick
I think he qualified because his grandmother is Polish. Other countries copying what the Irish and U.S. have done for years
If the Argies defeat Poland, who isn't the world's strongest and draw Mexico then that should be enough to get them thorough as group runners up in what might become a surprise group of death. Historically other teams have come back from shock defeats. It might be a wake up call.
In terms of your trivia question there now eight former Premier League players that have managed at a World Cup. I still want to give it a try
So far this looks to be a weak group. I'm surprised at the Saudis because they looked really poor against the U.S. during the last international break.
So far Mexico looks the more likely to score and Poland looks like Burnley in disguise
I completely agree with you, mate. The Argies could still go far.
Cross from Chalky Lozano cleared for a corner
I guess there will be goals in the late one , but the Argies gave France a tough match four years ago. France needed a late penalty to win 2-1
I think the Danes are in more troubler than the Argies. I don't see them getting anything against France then a must win against the Aussies , who held them to a draw four years ago.
Lots of Mexican supporters in attendance. It's like a home game for them
Su Su Sudio pushes over a cross from Sanchez. Mexico claims Lozanp was pushed in the box off the ball. Corner given . AN LOB blogging duo of stoppage time minutes
It's 0-0 at the end of a dull first half and in which Mexico tried harder to score than the Poles.
Feeling really goal starved after another 0-0 half.
The second half is underway and Poland have become more defensive as Bielik ,of the Brummies , on for young Roma midfield player, Zawleski
Second Brum player to come on as a sub today. The other one is on loan from Man United
Agreed, Bob. The only three goals scored today were all while we were sleeping
Long free kick from Zielinski sails harmlessly out of play. One would expect better from the Napoli midfield player
A mix up in typer Mexican box as they were caught faffing about at the back. Lew tackled by three player, including Ochoa, the goalkeeper. Now Var checking for a penalty
Should be a pen there for Lewandowski.
Looks like Hector Moreno pulled Lew's short in that mix up. I can see that being awarded. The ref is at the monitor
It is a pen - Poland have their chance now.
It is a penalty and Hector Moreno is booked. Mexico have themselves to balme. Ochoa told two defenders to clear upfield and instead caught at the back faffing about
Lew to take. Who else would it be?
WOW! saved by Ochoa. Poland blew it as they've had few chances. Still 0-0
What a save by Ochoa!!
Mexico fans are really vocal as that save has really lifted them
OH! What a save by Su Su Sudio. Rocket of a shot from Thomas Edison Alvarez took a wicked deflection off of Henry Martin's head and the experienced keeper used his reflexes to keep it 0-0
Matty Cash none too pleased at being called for a foul on Vega , but it was a really clumsy challenge
Henry Martin and Hector Herrera replaced by Carlos Rodriguez and Wolves Raul Jimenez.
Szymanski replaced by ex Chicago Fire player, Frankowski, for Poland
Moreno clears a Poland pass for a corner on a Polish break.
Raul Jimenez back defending , heads away the corner
Frankowski booked for a cheap shot on Lozano
Frankowski, down trying to get a player booked for minimal contact. The ref is having none of it
Matty Cash wins a corner off of Vega
Mexico break after blocking a couple of Polish shots, but nothing comes of it
Gallardo wins a Mexico corner off of Matty Cash
Antuna on for Vega in a like for like switch
Antuna wins a corner as we enter stoppage time. Dave's lucky seven minutes of that
This one's winding down to another 0-0 draw. Both sides will still be in it but the Saudis, improbably will top the group.
That's a shocker . I'm sure nobody predicted that. We're bobbing for some goals. Haven't seen one yet today
I finishes 0-0. Surely there will be goals in the late match
Next up is France v. Aussies - I'll likely be out and about for the first half but back for the second half. Come on, you Socceroos!
I second that. COME ON YOU AUSSIES!
France vs the Aussies is underway.
We're going on a walking trail. We may be back for the second half
I'm back for the last half hour. I got excited when Scott Goodwin scored but it's now settled into a predictable pattern.
Oh - saved off the line!
GOAL! Mbappe gets his goal and seals the French victory. That was coming!
GOAL! Olly Giroux nods home after Mbappe tees him up perfectly!
4-1!
I'm back and left when Scott Goodwin scored the goal. This is the expected scoreline . France looks like they'll be a tough opponent for England in the quarters
Nearly 5-1 , but just too long for Mbappe and Matty Ryan rushed out to gather
Atkinson for Jackson Irvine and Degenek for Baccus as the Aussies make a double substitution
That was the Hearts player for the St. Pauli player and the Columbus Crew player for a St. Helen Mirren player
Degenek heads out for a French corner
Tome for a double French change.Olly and Pavard off for Thuram and Kaounde
Nice save by Matty Ryan off the corner. The announcer said it was his first save of the match
It was a free header for Poll's Konmate and a great reflex save.
Dave's lucky seven minutes of stoppage time
That was really nasty by Aaron Mooy. A booking , but really should have been red. Now I see What Bob means about him mastering the dark arts
It's over and as expected France comfortably win 4-1 although they fell behind early.
That's it for me. Look forward to chatting tomorrow. Everyone enjoy the rest of your day.
CHEERS!
