Qatar 2022 - Day 7
A very good Saturday morning too all of you! We've got a fascinating weekend ahead of us. Groups C and D wrap up today, starting with the usual early morning dud featuring Group D also-rans Australia and Tunisia. That's followed by the Group C clash between Saudi Arabia and Poland. The Saudis are coming off that shock win against the Argies. Can they keep it going? At 11am, we've got the marquee match-up in Group D between France and Denmark. Then we wrap it up at 2pm with Argentina trying to rescue their campaign against Mexico.
So far, Qatar is the only team that's been eliminated, while no one has quite booked their tickets to the next round. That should change today. Let's be having ya!

Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. Not sure if this was an upset, but the Aussies defeated Tunisia 1-0 thanks to a header from Mitchell Duke. The Aussies finish the day second in the group . Nobody will be eliminated in Group D today.
The U.S. surprisingly held England to a 0-0 draw and with Qatar eliminated it was a good day. A shame that Wales lost to two super late goals yesterday. Wonder if anyone picked Hennessey to be the first player sent off. I doubt it.
Poland vs Saudi Arabia is underway
Long range saudi shot deflects off of Krystkowiak for a corner . Not too far over.
The Saudis have dominated early on. In some ways they're more the host nation than Qatar. They're fans are like nation fans being really loud and vocal
The Saudis will become the first team to clinch a place in the round of sixteen if they win today
OH! Su Su Sudio acrobatically tips a saudi shot over. A move that started with a shot free kick in their own half
The Saudis are up for this match while Poland have started as if they want to be anywhere but where they are
Jakob Kiwior and Matty Cash are booked within seconds for rash challenges
Now Milik goes into the book as he yanked a player's shorts to stop a Saudi counter. Will they finish with eleven players?
Now Almalki booed for the Saudis. He will be suspended for the match vs Mexico due to two bookings
Herve Renard, the Saudi coach upset that Matty Cash didn't get a second yellow for a clumsy challenge. Dr. Joe thought the Saudis had a shout
Matt. They Cash wins Poland's first corner of the match. They nearly cashed in as a header was was blocked by a header off the line and over
Lew triple teamed every time he receives the ball
GOAL! POLAND TAKES THE LEAD AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY. CLOSE RANGE SHOT BLASTED IN THE UPPER 90 AFTER THE KEEPR MADE A GORDON BANKS REFLEX BLOCK FROM LEW
Morning, David - I'm just settling in after diaper duty to see the Poles take the lead.
The first sign of class from Poland this tournament. Long goal kick from Su Su Sudio found ex Chicago Fire player, Frankowski who played a pass wide right to Matty Cash . His pass found Lew whose close range shot was superbly blocked by the keeper and Zielinski smashed in the rebound
What's this now? The ref is being called over to have a look at the VAR screen for a possible penalty.
VAR checking for a possible Saudi penalty. It looked a dive. BLOODY HELL? The ref is going to the monitor. Steve may be right about the fix being on. How is that a penalty?
It's a penalty. This match must be fixed. It's obvious there wasn't a foul.
It is a penalty for the Saudis and there is a big roar from the crowd. Not a lot of Polish fans in the crowd.
Good Morning, Bob. Glad you got done with diaper duty
Sussudio facing this one. And saves! and the follow-up is blasted over.
WAY HAY! SU SU SUDIO. IT'S A PENALTY SAVE! SU SU SUDIO!
How the bloody hell did they come up with ten stoppage time minutes? Between the penalty decision and the ridiculous amount of stoppage time this is a microcosm of what's wrong with FIFA
Good morning, Bob. Glad you are here and done with diaper duty
Another Saudi player booked, this time for a cheap shot on Lew
A Poland win would throw this group wide open and the Argies would be eliminated with a loss in the late match
Now a Saudi player is resorting to trying to get players booked by faking injury. The Polish players complain and the ref waves them away
It will be a similar halftime talk for Herve Renard to what it was against the Argies. That halftime talk sure worked
Poland is one up at the end of an entertaining first half
Back from walks and doesn't appear that I missed much. Still 1-0 to the Poles
By thiusstage of the match the Saudis had already come from behind against the Argies
Kaminski on for Zielinski, the scorer.
Poland should have gone two up. Free header for Milik off the bar off a nice cross from Frankowski
Lots of Saudi pressure, but their attacks are too predictable
OH! Another Polish shot and off the post from Lew. Then the Saudis counter and one of their players is fouled and trying to get a Polish player booked.
I'm back with my brekkies to enjoy the last half hour of this one. This group is wide open right now.
Milik fouls a Saudi player just outside the D
Welcome back, mate. Poland should have been three up. Hit the upright twice in the last few minutes
Saudis have a free kick now - slammed into the wall.
Free kick into the wall
Long range shot straight to Su Su Sudio
Second match in a row the Saudis are facing a former Gunners keeper
Piatek on for Milik
The Saudis appear to be running out of ideas despite giving it a go. Are you watching Qatar?
Kiwor with a block for a Saudi corner
The Poles with a great counter off the Saudi corner, but the Saudi keeper does well to rush out and clear the danger
Saudi player down. He must be actually injured as they surely don't want to waste time
OH! Nearly tied bye by AlMalki. Nice run then the player tackled then the first time shot from the edge of the box just wide
The Saudis are definitely knocking on the door here.
It's interesting to hear the voice of Warren Barton on this coverage. He was such a familiar voice on the Fox Soccer Channel coverage of the Premier League. But I haven't heard him for years.
GOAL! LEW WUITH HIS EVER WC GOAL PUTS THE POLES TWO UP. SAUDI DEFENDER CAUGHT DWELLING ON THE BALL, LEW TACKLED HIM AND FINISHED PAST THE STRANDED KEEPER.
There is it! Lew finally gets his World Cup goal! He picked the Saudi defender's pocket and slid home easily!
2-0 Poland!
Horrible by Almalki , who will having trouble sleeping tonight over that error
A goal and an assist for Lew today. That's more like it
Saudis to make a double substitution as they are two down late in the match
Poles are in pole position.
So Poland will top the group ahead of the late one on 4 points. The Saudis have 3 points from that improbable win over the Argies, Mexico have the point from the draw with Poland and Leo Messi and co. are down in the dumps on no points. All to play in the late one today.
Oh - Lew broke through again but couldn't beat the keeper this time.
OH! Nearly a second for Lew .Went on a solo run, nice block by the keeper then cleared for a corner
Into stoppage time. Dave's lucky seven minutes of that
If the Artgies lose then they are eliminated. Must win for both teams ion the late match. Should be a cracker.
Saudi fans basically silenced since that second goal was scored.
The Saudis have given it a go, but the difference in the teams was the cutting edge in the box.
I suppose a draw for Argentina would keep them alive but they really wouldn't want to face Poland needing a win with Lew sniffing the chance to put them out.
I think there is a real chance that both Argentina and Germany will be knocked out in the group stage. It opens the way for England.
Not sure why the ref stopped play. Saudi player down, but not a head injury. He's up and able to continue
Saudi injury in stoppage time. What's the point stop late in thew match. Should have been done earlier
Correct, Bob. A draw does neither teaming good in the late match. Must win for both teams. Germany should defeat the Ticos, but a loss to Spain and they're all but out
Poland have defeated the Saudis 2-0 and now top the group.I think they only need a draw vs the Argies to advance
That's it - Poland are in pole position i in the group now, with that win.
I'm off to tend the twins. I'll be back for the France match - really looking forward to that one.
Checking the brackets,I think the only way England can meet Germany is in the final and I don't see Germany making the final. My concern is that England will probably face France in the quarters and that's a team they would have wanted to avoid. England may haver an easier bracket if they finish group runners up
Me to mate. Catch you later
If France defeats the Danes then the World Cup holders will become the first team to clinch a place in the round of sixteen.
I'm back with a second cuppa for France v. Denmark. I reckon the Danish have a real chance to disrupt the French progress. They're a good side.
The teams for this one:
France: Hugo Lloris, Jules Kounde, Raphael Varane, Dayot Upamecano, Theo Hernandez, Adrien Rabiot, Aurelien Tchouameni, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappe
Denmark: Kasper Schmeichel, Joachim Andersen, Victor Nelsson, Andreas Christensen, Rasmus Kristensen, Pierre Hojbjerg, Christian Eriksen, Joakim Maehle, Jesper Lindstrom, Andreas Cornelius, Mikkel Damsgaard
I think France should defeat the Danes and clinch a place in the round of sixteen. The Danes looked horrible and couldn't even beat Tunisia, yet the Aussies could.
As expected, Raphael Varane starts at centre back for France after fully recovering from a hamstring injury. The Manchester United defender is the heart of the French defence alongside Dayot Upamecano, while Jules Kounde replaces Benjamin Pavard at right-back. Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot start in midfield with Antoine Griezmann set to work in support of the offensive trio of Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud.
Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand makes four changes to the side that drew with Tunisia. Simon Kjaer drops to the bench, making way for Victor Nelsson, while Jesper Lindstrom is in for Andreas Skov Olsen. Mikkel Damsgaard comes into midfield in place of the injured Thomas Delaney, while Andreas Cornelius is rewarded for his astonishing miss against the North African side with a starting berth. Kasper Dolberg drops to the bench.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but yesterday was the first time the U.S. ever drew 0-0 at the world Cup. That ended a 34 match streak, the longest in WC history
Also, the Argies could be eliminated today if they lose to Mexico. That would be a stunner.
The Danes have defeated France twice this year, but both matches were ion the meaningless NL, which the French probably didn't take seriously
Morning Boys
Had a bit of sleep in this morning
I am here for the World Champs vs Denmark
Just took the tape recorder out of my nose(Bob will know what I mean)
Denmark would love to win it but even if they lose...they beat Australia and they would qualify..am I right?
What does this morning's result mean for Argentina? Did it really matter? Was it good for them? Bad?
Kate just did a rousing version of Les Marseillaise for the twins.
France vs Denmark is underway
Morning, Dave - nice one! What does the man with two tape recorders up his nose have?
Good Morning, Dave Glad you're well rested. Correct that the Danes are through if they defeat the Aussies
Actually, Dave. I think the Danes would have to win and hope that Tunisia doesn't beat France because then Tunisia would go through on goals difference. I hadn't thought about that. A draw would really help the Danes
I think it probably puts them under even more pressure because now the Poles who they play on Wednesday are now right in the mix. I think the Argies might struggle with Mexico today - I predict a draw. Then they'll need a win against Poland.
Were you all surprised that the Aussies won today. Even though it wasn't as big an upset as the Saudis and Japan I was surprised.
I definitely was; my buddy Anthony who lives in Perth was deliriously happy!
Agreed, Bob. I could see the Argies drawing with Mexico and then definitely would need a win vs Poland
Denmark are hogging the ball early doors, trying to play it wide at every opportunity. Finally, France have a chance to break.
SA played well today. They should do well vs Mexico too
When Craig Goodwin scored for the Aussies vs France I think he became the first A league player to score at the WC. I think all their other scorers were playing abroad.
I also think that the Germans will struggle. They still have to play Spain who were in a rampant mood the other day. A win over the hapless Ticos might not be enough.
That's quite an achievement.
The problem with Saudi Arabia was poor quality in the opponents box. That cutting edge in the box was why the Poles won. The Poles could have won 4-0 with two shots off the upright, but the Saudis did more of the attacking
Well..I only saw the second half of the second half. Kathy told me that SA played well. I saw the saved penalty and rebound
If the Germans lose and Japan defeat the Ticos , which I thin they will then both Germany and the Ticos will be eliminated while Japan and Spain would be through
Definitely a rearguard action for the Danes today. They'll try to hang onto the ball when they have it and tick time off the clock. Their route to the next round is a draw here and a win over the Socceroos.
If the Germans lose, they are out...aren't they?
The Saudis were good but they were sloppy on the two goals.
It was a superb penalty save. It was never a penalty and during the ref meetings they told the refs not to award penalties for player simulation. So much for that. No wonder why Steve said the fix is on. I think he has a point
I don't know. Possibly. Does head to head come into play?
I think a win against the Aussies would be enough no matter about today....assuming France don't lose vs Tunisia
If the Germans lose and the Ticos defeat Japan then they are still in . That's the only way they can lose and be in . The Germans can then defeat the Ticos
I think head to head is UEFA
It is GD for FIFA
Free kick chance for the French now.
Well defended. Corner.
That's correct Dave. It's unlikely but a Tunisia win vs France means goal difference will come in to play and that depends upon this match
That's correct Dave. Spot on with the tiebreakers
Mexico vs the Argies should be a good match since a draw helps neither team. Should be cracker, but you never know
So, the Germans fate will probably rest with the match between CR and Japan. If the Ticos get a result, the Germans could survive until Matchday 3 even if they lose badly to Spain.
Did anyone mention the streak that ended for the U.S. yesterday. It was the longest in WC history. One of the announcers mentioned it.
Correct, Bob. They may not want to lose too badly to Spain as goal difference may be a factor
Decent cross there but Giroud was put off by Andersson.
Kathy was correct about the Saudis playing well. They would have done better but for their finishing . They were the better team , but Poland had the better chances if that makes sense.
Just a reminder France would be the first team to clinch place in the round of sixteen with a win. I guess that makes sense as they are the defending champs.
If Japan beat CR, which is probable, and the Germans lose, also probable, then it's Auf Wiedersehn!
Rob Stone mentions the Argies being eliminated with a loss after I mentioned it twice. He needs to read our updates
JA meinen Freud. Auf Wiedersen Mann Schaft if that happens
Booking for Christensen. The Franch want red , but there were two covering defenders. Tactical foul from behind as he was off the races.
Andreas Christensen picks up a yellow for a cynical tug back. Mbappe was off to the races there.
For once, I agree with Clattenburg - there were two covering defenders.
Oh - great save, Kasper!
Nice save by Kasper from a Dembele header. French starting to dominate
Did anyone mention the streak that ended for the U.S. yesterday?
Actually a nice save from the Nice keeper from the Rabiot header from the Dembele cross.
Naughty by Cornelius on Olly and booked for that
What was the streak, David?
Cornelius argues his case , but it was really clumsy on Olly
Yesterday was the first ever 0-0 draw for the U.S. at the WC .That ended a 34 match streak, the longest in WC history
Not sure if I'm correct, but England has the most ever 0-0 draws in WC history
Koounde's shot blocked just in front of the line off a mazy run and cross from Mbappe.
Sorry...I have been folding laundry and now having a spot of breakie....some Eggs Benedict...very apt for me yesterday
The Danes will be happy with this so far; their game plan is to frustrate Les Bleus.
Shot from Griezmann kick saved at the near post by Kasper then the nest two shots are blocked by the Danes
Sounds lovely, Dave.
Nice brekkies , Dave. Thanks for the reminder. W have laundry to fold too
Soft free kick now for the French.
Agreed, Bob. The French have come close and the Danes are living dangerously even though it's going to plan so far
Oh - I thought that Cornelius shot had gone in!
So what did you think of that U.S. streak that ended ?
I think that was the Dane's first shot of the match
I watched the World Cup Tonight show last night for the first time to get their take on the England v US match. It was awful. The only English perspective was from a women's player and bloody Piers Morgan!
Was it that they didn't score against the US? I know that they did in both 1950 and 2010.
I think this fixture was the only 0-0 draw last WC. Both teams qualified for the round of sixteen with that result
I just wanted England to win to shut up Lexi...he is so anti-British!
No it was that the U..S. had gone 34 matches without a 0-0 draw, the longest streak in WC history
Agreed, Dave. I can't stand Lexi
Stevie G scored for England vs the U.S. in 2010, but the U.S. won 1-0 in 1950
I do remember that fact David
We've already had too many in this one!
Typical for the score to be 0-0 after all the hype in the country!I It never fails that when the country starts to pay attention...the no scoring, boring argument comes up!
From 1930-1986...every final BOTH teams scored in the Final. In 1990, Argentina failed to score in the Final
1994...in the USA....paying attention....BOTH teams FAIL to score!!
US undefeated against England in the WC....let's fix that in the Final!!
Kounde booked for a nasty challenge. I've seen red given for those
Nice one, Dave. Agreed about the too many 0-0 draws. If the U.S. wants to advance they need to do something England and Wales didn't do, which is stop Taremi. The Porto striker has two goals and an assist in those matches. He needs to be kept in check and the U.S. needs to start putting chances away.
An LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes
HT....more nils on the board
I am off for walkies
It's 0-0 at the half . The Danes have sat back and frustrated the French
Just before I left, Rob said it was the 11th 0-0 HT score!
Rubbish!
Also...STILL NOT ONE free-kick goal as far as I can remember.
We are off for the second half
Martin Braithawite on for the ineffective Cornelius as the second half is underway
Agreed, Dave. This would make half a dozen 0-0 results if it finishes this way. I wonder what the record for 0-0 draws is in a WC tournament.
Dave, you will be pleased that Pompey defeated the Fake Dons 3-2 in the Second Round of the FA cup today. I wonder when the draw for the Third Round will be.
Great news...I asked my cousin if she was going. I never heard back. Maybe she was at Fratton Park
Just looked up the scores...don't seen any non-league teams apart from Wrexham have made it through to the 3rd Round
Paul Mullin with an FA Cup hat-trick!!
I really enjoyed the Wrexham documentary
4 non league teams play tomorrow
Chesterfield is the other non league team to make it to the Third Round . They won 0-2 at the Real Dons. There are five Cup ties tomorrow and the Daggers vs Gils currently being played.
Draw is on Monday
You probably know , but there are two slim paths for Wales to make it to the round of sixteen. The easiest one is to defeat England and hope the the U.S. vs Iran is a draw. Otherwise they need to defeat England by four goals to qualify. Your thoughts?
If the FA is smart, which they usually aren't , they will have it between WC matches. Thanks for the update.
Nice solo run by Mbappe then a powerful shot straight at Kasper fisted away for a corner
If Argentina lose, they are definitely out
Two teams would have 4 points
A draw would keep them alive
It's interesting to see the big teams struggling to win their second games.
I did know that. I was really worried about England not qualifying after yesterday's match but I felt better when I see that they are through unless they lose by 4 goals
I still want to win and win the group and yesterday's match meant nothing....just like Scotland in the Euros
A draw doesn't help either team too much in the late match. Argies would have a must win vs Poland. to qualify for the round of sixteen. Sound like England in 1986?
Oh - big miss from the Grieze.
AG should have scored there... ball bounced too high as he swung his foot
They would need at least a two goal win to beat the Poles
Agreed, Dave. If Iran win and England draw vs Wales then Iran wins the group. However, would England have an easier path if they are group runners up?
GOAL
Mbappe gives the World Champs the lead
GOAL! Mbappe finally breaks the deadlock!
GOAL! MBAPPE GIVES FRANCE A DESERVED LEAD ! A things stand Franc would be the first to qualify for the Round of Sixteen
Lillian Thuram's kid coming on.
A well worked goal and Theo Hernandez deserves a lot of credit .KOunde found him wide left then Hernandez on a long run before finding Mbappe for the goal
Not sure if you all know, But Theo Hernandez, who assisted on the goal, is only playing because his brother was injured vs the Aussies. He came on as a sub for his brother in that match
Well, they would not be with France but would be with Spain and Brazil
As things stand must win for the Danes vs the Aussies. One would expect the Danes to win, but the Aussies surprised us this morning
So, if England win...they finish top
If England draw.. they still could finish top if the other match is a draw
If England lose...they could still win if the other is a draw or finish second if there is a winner
I just checked my horrible hand writing for the brackets, but they wouldn't face Spain or Brazil till the semis. France would be in the quarters. Group runners up the lesser of the evils for England?
GOAL!!!!
THE DANES ARE BACK!!
Yes! Get in!!
GOAL ! CHRISTENSEN TIES IT UP FOR THE DANES
Corner from Eriksen headed on by Joachim Andersen then headed in by Christensen. Back to as you were before the French scored.
The Danes are capable o winning this one.
I think the only way England fails to qualify AND there is a winner in the U.S. vs Iran match
Agreed, Dave . The Danes could possibly win
England haven't clinched a spot in the round off sixteen , but are 99% of they way to doing so
Oh - nearly a second!
