Qatar 2022 - Day 6 - A Very Big Day!
Morning, chaps! This is the day that we've been waiting for since the draw was made, the most crucial day in Group B, where England face the US in the marquee match at 2pm. I'd like to see a comfortable win for England that would qualify them for the Round of 16 but not an embarrassing loss for the US. The day starts with Wales v. Iran, the other match in Group B. In between, we've got the two Group A matches, starting wtih hosts Qatar v. Senegal at 8am. At 11am it's the two winners in the first round of matches - the Netherlands and Ecuador.
Join me for a good natter today -- come on, England!

In the early match, Wales succumbed to two stoppage time goals in what is likely a fatal blow to their hopes of getting out of Group B. The group is now wide open with Iran on 3 points.
The teams for the Qatar v. Senegal.
Qatar: Barsham, Pedro Miguel, Mohammad, Khoukhi, Abdelkarim Hassan, Ahmed, Al-Haydos, Boudiaf, Madibo, Ali, Afif
Senegal: Edouard Mendy, Sabaly, Koulibaly, Jakobs, Diallo, Idrissa Gueye, Nampalys Mendy, Diatta, Diedhiou, Ismaila Sarr, Dia.
Hi Bob
Did you listen to the Fox Numpties after the match
They said the Iran score makes England look overrated!
How...they crushed a team 6-2 and that team just won!
Pretty much, the England match doesn't mean that much for them. If they beat Iran, they would qualify...unless they have a bad day for GD
That should be a penalty for the hosts....nothing given!!
SO... INCONSISTENT!
That is called all over the field
Awful defending...1-0 to Senegal
Senegal go 1-0 up over the hosts as we get head toward the interval. Real defensive clanger.
Morning, Dave - I missed that discussion while doing diapers.
makes no sense. If anything it shows that England were really impressive.
Hi Bob...I know!
They are morons
With this win, Senegal puts themselves in contention for a R16 meet up with England.
Qatar are on the verge of the quickest host-exit from a World Cup.
We're just into the second half and Senegal have scored again through a corner routine. Really poor defending again from the hosts. They're going out.
2-0!
Good Morning, Bob and Dave. Unfortunately I won't be around today . I will be leaving soon for the Atlanta airport and expect to be gone all day. Please no spoiler alerts as I am recording. I will be around tomorrow. Thank you.
Morning, David - thanks for checking in. I hope you'll have a good trip!
I am back after some errands.
Have a safe trip David
Plenty of time for an equalizer
Fans didn't go as crazy as I thought they would
Some were just standing and smiling
Alas...Senegal regain their two goal lead
Senegal are running out to a 3-1 win here, which will send Qatar crashing out of this tournament on the sixth day, the quickest ever exit for a host nation.
I agree, Dave - that will likely be the only goal they score in this tournament, so they should have gone nuts.
That's it
The hosts are done and dusted
The Khalifa International Stadium is the venue for the second of today’s Group A matches, where the Netherlands will take on Ecuador. Both sides won their opening games, with Ecuador recording a routine win against hosts Qatar in the tournament curtain-raiser, while the Netherlands left it late to see off Senegal a day later.
Buh bye Qatar!
So goal difference may come into things in Group A. Senegal now have 0 goal difference and have scored three goals. Both Netherlands and Ecuador have +2 goal difference, having scored two goals.
Interesting how the panel has now shifted back to the "Iran are a dangerous team" narrative now that they will play the US on Tuesday. That was the original narrative before the England game. Then after England thrashed Iran, the narrative was "Iran are hopeless." Make up your minds!
Big news out of the Brazilian camp - Neymar is out until the Round of 16. I think that actually might benefit them as they can stick one of the kids like Rodrygo or Antony in. Or perhaps play Gabby Jesus and Richarlison together.
The team sheets for the next one:
Holland: Noppert, Timber, van Dijk, Ake, Dumfries, Koopmeiners, Frenkie de Jong, Blind, Klaassen, Gakpo, Bergwijn.
Subs: Pasveer, de Ligt, de Vrij, Luuk de Jong, Depay, Berghuis, Lang, Bijlow, de Roon, Malacia, Janssen, Weghorst, Taylor, Simons, Frimpong.
Ecuador: Galindez, Angelo Preciado, Porozo, Torres, Hincapie, Estupinan, Plata, Mendez, Caicedo, Estrada, Valencia.
Subs: Arboleda, Cifuentes, Pacho, Gruezo, Ayrton Preciado, Ibarra, Ramirez, Arreaga, Mena, Sarmiento, Palacios, Franco, Dominguez, Reasco, Rodriguez.
Sadly, it's Derek Rae alongside Aly Wagner. And we're away!
Here's a trivia fact for you: this is a clash between a country with one of the highest elevations with one with one of the lowest elevations.
GOAL! That didn't take long - it's that man that got away from us - Cody Gakpo!
Gakpo joins half a dozen others, including Ecuador's Ener Valencia on two goals.
A reminder that this group feeds into Group B - England's group - in the Round of 16. So, which team would we prefer to see placing second - Ecuador or Senegal?
That will largely depend on goal difference. Ecuador are now on +1 and Senegal on 0 but having scored more.
I am back from doing errands
I so hope England can get it done today....just to shut Lexi up
Ecuador coming back into this one
I just cannot stand Derek Rae's ridiculous crusade of pronouncing names "correctly". He sounds like an idiot
THE EQUALIZER
A late corner is headed in....but there seems to be an offside call....there was a guy standing there but he wasn't in the way
It is called back
That was the last play of the game
Teams out for the second half
Depay on for the Dutch
We are off
Ball in the Dutch net again.... a shot was parried and tapped in by Valencia....Looks like he's on side
Valencia's third goal
Dutch want an offside...VVD seems adamant
Playin around at the back and it bites them
Looks onside when they paused the screen...of course...who knows if that is the exact time they should have
It does count
Of course, this means that this group is up for grabs...It could mean England play the Dutch!
I guess Holland still favorites if it stays like this
They have Qatar in their last match
The table is
Holland 4 +2
Ecuador 4 +2
Senegal 3 0
Ecuador and Holland are dead level
Ecuador go close twice!
A shot blocked and then a pile drive rattles the crossbar
Hi again - Just finished lunch. I think Ecuador should be ahead here. They were unlucky to have one ruled out at the end of the first half. And the one off the bar from Estrada could easily have gone in. Holland look really ordinary.
I just finished lunch too. Totally agree with you about Ecuador
Even if they win, they won't have qualified yet. If Holland win, they will have
The problem would be that England would face Holland if there is an upset here.
I know... but the Dutch aren't that good
The Dutch played on with Valencia down.
Matt just read on Twitter that Southgate has named an unchanged team for the US match
This is the first time he has not changed a line up since the last WC matches against Sweden and Croatia in the QF and SF
Ecuador's only goalscorer in the tourney is being taken off on a stretcher...wonder if this is for theatrics
6 added minutes
No matter what happens in this match, I still think Holland are heavy favorites to win the group.
Ecuador would have to beat Senegal with a better combination than the Dutch beat Qatar.
A draw against Senegal would be enough to qualify for Ecuador
That is it... Ecuador deserved to win this but a draw it is
Is there another game today!!!
The Line Ups
ENGLAND
Pickford, Stones, Maguire, Trippier, Shaw, Rice, Bellingham, Mount, Saka, Kane, Sterling
USA
Turner; Dest, Zimmerman, Ream, Robinson; Adams, Musah, McKennie; Wright, Weah, Pulisic
Well, that result puts the cat amongst the pigeons.
Group B
If England win, they would qualify for the next round and be odds on to win group. They could only be caught by Iran and that would that would take a huge change in goals. England would be at least a SEVEN goal swing
If England draw, would qualify for the next round
If England lose....all up for grabs
The US probably need one win from either game to go through
Lexi is still talking rubbish
I hope England wallop them to shut him up!
A point doesn't really help the US. A draw would mean they are still behind Iran
One of the key factors today will be the yellow card suspension watch. Several of the US players are at risk for missing the Iran match, which is more important than this one. I hope that means they'll take it a bit easier.
The team news for the big one:
England: Pickford, Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Bellingham, Rice, Saka, Mount, Sterling, Kane.
Subs: Walker, Grealish, Henderson, Rashford, Pope, Phillips, Dier, Coady, Alexander-Arnold, Foden, White, Ramsdale, Wilson, Gallagher.
USA: Turner, Dest, Zimmerman, Ream, Robinson, McKennie, Adams, Musah, Weah, Wright, Pulisic.
Subs: Reyna, Ferreira, Aaronson, Horvath, de la Torre, Long, Morris, Roldan, Moore, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin, Acosta, Sargent, Johnson, Scally.
Referee: Jesús Valenzuela (Venezuela).
No changes for England; only one change for the US - Haji Wright in for the ineffectual Josh Sargent.
Here come the teams - let's go!
England to get us going - come on!
US doing the high press from the off, so England go long.
Very cagey opening five minutes here.
Oh - first big chance for England falls to Kane. Nice block by Zimmerman. Corner.
From the corner, Harry Maguire has a chance to weave his way into the area before his center is cleared out.
All England pressure now. The US really under the cosh.
First decent chance there with McKennie crossing for Wright who heads well wide.
Another decent attack from the US - cross from Dest is grabbed by Pickers.
Oh - big chance there for McKennie - blew it over the top.
Oh - Pulisic rockets one off the bar!
England look out of ideas right now.
Now we've got a free kick - need to make the most of it.
Better pressure there from England but then Turner tries to launch Pulisic.
Wright wins the US a corner. Mark 'em up!
Oh - Dest romps forward and has a shot deflected out for another corner.
Oh - now Pulisic has a headed chance just wide. The US are looking really dangerous here.
Oh - great run by Shaw there and Saka was off balance and knocked it wide.
Oh - Mount pulls a good save out of Turner. Better from England.
Decent corner over but cut out by Turner.
And that's half-time - 0-0. On a knife's edge.
Teams coming out for the second half now.
Come on, England!
Fast start for the US. Come on!
Wright had a chance there jinking inside but his shot was blocked and the McKennie blasted over.
Pulisic wins a corner now. England haven't won enough corners in this one.
And another US corner now - grrr!
And another - a lot of pressure from the US now.
I'd like to see some changes right now. The US are growing in confidence.
The USA continue to dominate. Their fans are giving it plenty. On the touchline, Gareth Southgate has the good grace to look concerned.
Finally we've got some changes. Grealish on for Sterling and Hendo on for Bellingham. I'd have had Foden on for Mount.
SO BAD!!!!!
I have no idea why subs took too long to come on
I have no idea why Henderson came on
Oh - Grealish dazzled Dest there.
Grealish attacked more than Sterling did the whole game!
Berhalter about to go for some LUFC magic.
A draw is not good enough
Looks like Grealish has really unsettled Dest.
Maguire has been the best England player
I agree - Grealish has made a difference since coming on. Still hopeful but it shouldn't have been this tight.
Totally - Maguire has won countless headers.
Where is Foden and Rashford!!!!!
Brenden Aaronson comes on for McKennie.
Looks like Rash is also coming on.
Shaq Moore also coming on for Dest who was looking ragged against Grealish.
Rash on
Saka coming off to make way for Rash.
Need some MUFC magic!
England fans booing the passing around the back
Mount needs to come off....he has been rubbish
Still time to win this one. Come on, England!
Agreed I'd have Foden on.
Grealish wins a free kick and now we have a chance to swing one into the box. Come on!
Oh - Rash goes for a curler but it's a tame effort.
Four stoppage time minutes to come.
Corner chance now for England. This has got to go in!
