Qatar 2022 - Day 5 - Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving, chaps - we round off the first set of group matches today with fixtures from Groups G and H. Group G is dominated by tournament favorites Brazil, so we'll have our first look at Neymar and co as they run up against Serbia this afternoon at 2pm. The undercard to that marquee match starts again at the ungodly hour of 5am with an unappetizing Group G match-up between Switzerland and Cameroon. Then it's Group H's turn, starting at 8am with the elder statesmen of Uruguay versus the youngsters of South Korea. Then it's Ronaldo time as Portugal start their campaign against Ghana.
Join me throughout the day, won't you?

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Switzerland defeated Cameroon 1-0, handing them their eighth consecutive loss at the World Cup. The record is nine , so Cameroon may break that unwanted record at this World Cup.
In the next match K Pop fans will be rooting for South Korea against Uruguay. These two have met twice at the World Cup with Uruguay winning both. They win 1-0 in a group match in 1990 and 2-1 in a Round of Sixteen match in 2010
Morning, David - we're just getting going here on a cold but clear Thanksgiving Day up here in WNY. Looking forward to the footer today.
Here are the teams on display in this opening Group H match:
Uruguay (4-4-2): Rochet; Cáceres, Godín, Giménez, Olivera; Valverde, Vecino, Bentancur, Pellistri; Núñez, Suárez. Subs: Muslera, Sosa, Coates, Varela, Viña, Rodríguez, Ugarte, Torreira, Canobbio, De La Cruz, Arrascaeta, Torres, Gómez, Cavani.
South Korea (4-3-3): Kim Seunggyu; Kim Mooonhwan, Kim Minjae, Kim Younggwon, Kim Jinsu; Jung Wooyoung, Hwang Inbeom, Lee Jaesung; Son Heungmin, Hwang Uijo, Na Sangho. Referee: Clément Turpin (France)
South Korea have started well, nippy and adroit in midfield.
Good morning Bob. Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family. Mild this morning compared to last week.
On the quiz it's thirteen correct because you listed number four twice. I'm surprised Modric didn't make the list. I was thinking 2006,2014,2018,2022.
Valverde with a half chance there - put it over the top.
Well done, David - just three to go then.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all too. I'm likely to be busy during the 'geezers vs Ghana, but I'm here for Dick Grayson vs Uruguay and then later, the Selecao vs a Mitrovic-missing Serbia.
Happy Thanksgiving, Steve - when's a good time for a Facetime with you lot?
Oh - Uruguay were in there but Oliviera overcooked the ball.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Steve. My schedule should be similar to yours.
Later on after the matches finish. We've got Paulie joining us for dinner around 3-4pm and all hands on deck leading up to the start of the Brazil game.
Curious about this Uruguay team. It's not the usual bunch of biters, foulers, and divers they usually offer. I quite like the look of Valverde and even I can concede that Betancour is good. Pellestri is quite eye-catching too and with Suarez and Nunez, they could make a deep run.
South Korea have lost six of the last seven World Cup matches. The exception was the famous win vs Germany.
May I point out the the Koreans are in an all-Kim back four formation today? And another one in goal.
Agreed Steve. With the exception of biter Suarez and Chopper Godin it's a new look team. Charles Darwin Nunez is prone to being provoked. He was the first Premier sending off of the season.
Oh - big chance for Hwang - this could easily be 2-2.
One of the Hwangs with a very wasteful effort that should have opened Koreas account
Nice one Steve. Would be a great name for a K Pop group, not a North Korean PM. How about their Number One Son, who is Betancur's teammate
They won't Hwang Chung tonight
Godin and Caceres are both over 35!
Also, I maintain the Saudis would not have won if Lizzy Martinez had started instead of Romero, who was culpable for both goals. He needs to be dropped.
Suarez is 35. A little long in those biting teeth.
I'm taking Trooper walkies to make sure I don't miss much of the second half.
I think that KSA result should be looked at for evidence of manipulation. I know the Argies are notorious slow-starters, but something is very very fishy about that result.
0-0 at half time; I'm off to make brekkies.
I just noticed Pellistri is a red. No appearances yet however. What's that about?
So far, this is thin gruel. I'm disappointed in both teams timidity.
Son takes a tame tackle and rolls around beseechingly. He pops up as soon as the ref gives the Uruguayan a yellow. Such a good player, such a tiny individual.
Back from walkies, relegated to the bedroom since Elizabeth is watching the Macy's Day Parade.
The Arrow is warming up for Uruguay.
Cavani on for Bitey.
An electric change as Suarez is bitten off for Thomas Edison Cavani. One ancient striker for another
A Kim is down. If he had to be replaced, do they have a strategic reserve of Kims to fill in the gap?
I just checked Pellestri . Never has made a first team appearance for United, but starting for Uruguay.Spent the previous two seasons on loan to Alaves in La Liga.
LOL! Would be prime minister up north.I think there's a surplus of Kim's.
Ian Darke is talking about Garnacho. Not competition for Pellestri because he's from neighboring Argentina
Do you think Portugal is Ghana to win today.African teams have yet to score in four attempts. CONCACAF only one in four attempts.
I picked Uruguay to finish second in the group. They haven't done enough to show they're Ghana to win the group.
When Portugal plays South Korea it will be a contest of two Portuguese managers.
I'm officially goal-starved. Fortunately, Thanksgiving breakfast is on - cheesy scrambled eggs, cinnamon rolls and banana.
Oh - I thought Nunez might score there. Cavani nearly got onto it as well.
Not sure how Uruguay chose their current manager. Prior to being appointed last December he was manager of Inter Miami for three seasons and the five seasons before that he managed in the Mexican league. I guess there must not be many Uruguayan managers out there.
Your brekkies sounds much better than the match. Will there be room for Thanksgiving dinner?
There was only one 0-0 draw last WC . This could be number four this early in the tournament.
Landy thinks this has been a great match. He must be watching a different match than us.
The unknown United player is subbed by a Brazilian based player that according to Ian has never scored a professional goal. Just what Uruguay does not need at this point in the match
Oh - Son nearly nicked it for South Korea there.
OH! Off the post by Valverde. Could have been a late winner. Then wide by Number One Son.
Dave's lucky seven stoppage time minutes
A drab match finishes 0-0. Uruguay may count themselves unlucky as they hit the post twice.
It all ends disappointingly 0-0. I'm off to revive myself in the shower.
I'm back for the third match of the day - the Portugeezers kicking off their campaign against Ghana.
Welcome back. Do you think 🤔 Portugal is Ghana win ?
OH! Mo Kodous coughs up possession then with just the keeper to beat Aiti Zigi saves superbly at his feet.
How is this for trivia? Inaki Williams is the loan forward for Ghana. Yesterday, his brother, Neco, came on as a sub for Spain.
CR 7 with a goal disallowed for a supposed foul.. That's a soft call. Portugal should be leading.
I'm back to check in on things at half-time. I decided to swap out the car mats and do some detailing. And I'm glad that I did. It's another 0-0 bore so far.
That's a really interesting trivia point. I wondered how there was a "Williams" on the Spanish side.
PENALTY PORTUGAL. Salisbury called for a push on CR 7
It seemed soft. Will VAR check? It doesn't appear that it will. CR 7 to take
GOAL! IT GOES IN THE UPPER 90. He becomes the first player to score in five worl cups.
CR-17 goes down in the box and Portugal have a pen. He dispatches it with aplomb to become the first player to score in five World Cups. Quite an achievement.
Wow, this game has just exploded. Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana and then Portugal responded with two goals.
I finished 3-2 to Portugal. It was much closer than I expected. Portugal still the group favorites in my opinion, but not very convincing.
We conclude with Brazil vs Serbia. We will see if Brazil is the real deal.
I'm back after a tasty lunch for the main event. The last one was a bore in the first half and then got rather lively in the last half hour. Portugal have the advantage now in Group H.
The team news for this one:

Referee Alireza Faghani (Iran).
Steve will be unhappy that both Gabby Jesus and Gabby Martinelli are on the bench today. Spuds scrub Richarlison favored. I'm looking forward to watching my boy Raphinha. I miss him.
I've really been looking forward to this one. Of course, all neutrals hope that Brazil will recover the magic of 1970 and 1982 (my favorite ever WC team). And I actually rate Serbia, who have a very dangerous front line. I fancy them to score. I also hope that bad boy Mitrovic will get me some points by headbutting someone.
Teams out for the anthems now.
I see that Alisson has adopted a 70s porn star 'stache.
Serbians giving it their all with the anthem - you can tell their in full ethnic cleansing mode today. Neymar better watch his ankles.
Brazil have a lot to live up to - they've been watching everyone else. Spain have scored 7, England have scored 6, the French have scored 4, Holland and Portugal 3. So they need to win convincingly.
Peeeeeeep peeeeeeep! Brazil kick off from left to right as we watch.
Apparently Filip Kostic is only fit enough for the bench, which explains what would have been a peculiar omission. He was my pick for one to watch in this group.
The Serbs have adopted a high press from the start. Could be risky.
Oh - first chance for Raph to romp forward. Couldn't find a man.
We're going to start eating Thanksgiving dinner will watching what is hopefully the big match of the day
Enjoy your meal, mate!
Pavlovic with an early yellow - he'll need to watch himself now.
The Serbs are already trying to tick moments off the clock.
Oh - lovely ball from Casemiro to Neymar, but he was surrounded really quickly.
The Serbs are fairly talented. Not sure why they need to waste time?
Oh - great turn of pace from Vinicius, Jr. there to get to the by-line. Wins a corner.
Oh - Savic nearly got caught out by Neymar at the corner. Tipped it over.
Neymar pulls the trigger from distance - blocked out.
We're having our dinner later, but it's in progress We've made a shepherd's pie with ground turkey and sweet potato just to mix things up.
Casemiro hits a curler from distance that is comfortably saved by Milinkovic-Savic.
Oh - Vinny, Jr. was in goal but the keeper Savic did really well.
Lovely long ball to Raph who nods back into the danger zone. That should have been snaffled up by Richarlison.
Oh - lovely backheel to Raph who couldn't quite find Thiago Silva.
Serbia absorbing a lot of pressure at the moment, just looking for one opportunity for Mitrovic.
OH! Raphinha misses a sitter . Scuffs a shot straight at Milinkovic-Savic with just the keeper to beat
Tadic plays a return pass to the underlapping Zivkovic, whose very deep cross is headed wide by Mladenovic (I think). An eighth chance at best.
Possession-watch: Brazil 60-40 Serbia. It feels closer to 70-30, but there you go. Either way, Serbia will be almost entirely chuffed with how the first half has gone.
Oh - Vinicius, Jr. got past the defensive there but the fullback got back to tackle.
Brazil attacking, but their finishing seems to be a little off.
A minute of stoppage time.
It's 0-0 at the half. Nary a single first half goal today, but half a dozen in the second half. More to come in the second half?
Well, England were 3-0 up at half-time, Spain were 4-0 up. Brazil are still at 0-0.
Let's hope so, mate. I want goals!
Should we take Spain's result with a grain of salt since the Ticos seem to be the worst team of the tournament
I'm wondering how long it will be before we see Gabby Jesus in for Richarlison.
Also, I think England will clinch a place in the round of sixteen with a win tomorrow. I tried that and all the possible results of Wales vs Iran and arrived at that conclusion.
I would like to see that change and Steve will based on his response to my question about that on FB.
I don't know - the Spanish looked quite tasty. They've got quality throughout and have seemed to have moved from the old guard (Busquets notwithstanding).
I'm thinking the same. I don't think that the USA rearguard can live with all of England's threats. But I expect the US to score at least one. I would guess a 3-1 or 4-1 win.
Will you be getting up for the Wales v. Iran? I will if you're planning to.
The second half is underway
Oh - Raph was in there and should have scored.
I'm going to record Wales vs Iran. If I wake up and can't get back to sleep then I will watch.
Unfortunately I won't be around for England vs U.S. because I need to take Melanie to the Atlanta airport. I will be recording that match
Gudelj fouls Neymar from behind just outside the box
Neymar is chopped down and it's a yellow. He really should have dished off to Vinicius, Jr.
Neymar time from the free kick.
A minute earlier Raphinha tackled Gudelj and where did he learn his finishing? Second missed sitter of the match
Free kick from Neymar off Mitriovic for a Brazil corner
Neymar clips one off the wall and out for a corner.
I surprised - he scored those for fun when he was Elland Road.
Where did Raphinha learn his attacking? Two missed sitters and a poor touch in the Serb box
LOL, Bob! Nice response.
OH! Wide by Neymar off a pass from Vinicius Jr. The Juniors combined
John Lukic called for a foul on Neymar
Radonjic and Ilic on for Gudelj and Zivkovic
Cross from Tadic headed out by Alex Sandro for Serbia's first corner of the match
Oh! Long range rocket from Alex Sandro crashes off the post
GOAL! RICH ARLISON GIVES BRAZIL THE LEAD
It was a run by Neymar and his heavy touch broke to Vinicus Jr. His shot was saved by Milinkovic-Savic and Rich Arlison put away the rebound from a yard out
Tadic down holding his head. John Lukic booked for dissent.
The replay showed Casemiro was using his arms for leverage and unintentionally gazed Tadic's head.
John Lukic and Mladenovic off for Vlahovic and Lazovic
Casemiro clears for a Serbia corner .Tadic to take
Mihalovic heads the corner well over.
Another Serb corner and two headers cleared off the line as they thought they had equalized.
GOAL ! NICE FINISH BY RICH ARLISON TO PUT BRAZIL TWO UP
What a goal!!
Same combo as the first goal . Ball played win eleft to Vinicius Junior then his pass was scooped up in the air by Rich Arlison then superbly volleyed in the corner
Fred on for Luke the Package and Rodrygo on for Real teammate, Vinicius Junior
Neymar down for Brazil . Not sure if he will continue.Jesus on for Rich Arlison
Antony on for Neymar. Now three United players on the pitch for Brazil.
OH! Curling shot crashes off the post. Nearly a third goal
Nice save by Milinkovic -Savic from Rodrygo
Actually was off the bar by Casemiro
OH! Another long range shot well saved by Milinkovic-Savic. This time turned around from Fred
Alison just fails to prevent a corner off a deflected shot from Milenkovic
Over from Rodrigo off a nut meg and pass from Antony
Martinelli on for Raphinha . Steve will be happier about that change than Bob
Dave's lucky seven stoppage time minutes.
It's over and Brazil win 2-0 thanks to a double from Rich Arlison. But for Milinkovic-Savic in the Serbia goal it would have been more.
That's it for me. I probably won't be around tomorrow, but will be on Saturday.
CHEERS!
