Qatar 2022 - Day 10 - The Big One!
Morning, chaps - it's a very big day at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Now that we're through two rounds of group stage matches, we're on to sorting out who will progress from these groups starting with Groups A and B today. So far, only three sides - France, Brazil and Portugal - have qualified for the R16, while only two - the hosts Qatar and Canada - have been eliminated. We start out with Group A at 10am this morning but most of us will have our eyes firmly on those Group B matches at 2pm this afternoon, with England taking on Wales and the US taking on Iran.
Join me for all the drama today, won't you?

Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. For me, today is all about the U.S. Win and they're in. Otherwise they go home. England have underperformed. With the talent at their disposal they should have already clinched first place in their group. If they can't defeat Wales then find a replacement for Southgate.
Ecuador vs Senegal is the big match at 10 AM. Surely this is for second in the group and to decide who plays England in the Round of Sixteen.
Hey Boys
I have brought another TV downstairs. It is 30 seconds behind but I get to see both games for the rest of the week
Saw rumors that SGate is making four changes
This is the rumored side
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw
Henderson, Rice , Bellingham
Rashford, Kane, Fode
Good Morn ing, Dave. I have the split screen , which has worked well for me. I think Ecuador vs Senegal started fifteen seconds after Holland vs Qatar
I guess that's a 4-3-3, but looks odd. Is it me or did he pick THREE defensive midfield players , two strikers and Foden just behind the front two.A 4-2-1-3?
My focus will be on the U.S vs Iran, not England vs Wales. The Three lions should have already been through and should win by at least three goals. against a journeyman side of primarily lower division players
I will have the big TV on England and the little one on the US. I may change if the match is decided early. I will be 30 seconds behind you for the US match
IN Group A Netherlands top on the fair play tiebreaker because Ecuador ahead 3-1 on bookings
It is so crazy to decide things on that... even though playing far should count...I just think depending on a particular referee you get...he can be card happy
I will be the other way around. In terms of the two matches, the U.S. needs to find a striker who can put the ball in thew back of the net. England needs to perform better if they want to win the WC. Not good enough vs the U.S.
According to you, I will be able to turn over the England game..I hope it is 3-0!
Totally agree about the US match...of course... the Iran match...England were world beaters!
Do yo know how the bookings count?
1 point for yellows?
Reds?
Agreed, Dave, but if two teams are tied on points, goal difference, heads to head , and goals scored what do they do? It used to be drawing lots , which wasn't fair. Should it be shots on target? I don't know the solution. Japan edged Senegal for second place on fair play last WC
I think it's tow pits for reds, but as far as I know Wayne Hennessey has been the only red so far
Drawing lots was ridiculous. I think Wales had to play a playoff game to advance to meet Brazil in 58
I like the shots on target idea...it has nothing to do with a ref working for Hallmark!
Of course...if stray cross that rolls to the keeper...is that a shot on target!
I agree England were better against Iran , but concerned about the defensive lapses and the fact that Porto striker, Taremi wasn't marked better. He has two goals and an assist for Iran. If the U.S. don't mark him out of the match they will be going home. He's the real deal and could do a decent job in the Prem. He has strength and pace
Hennessy is the only red
But a red for the Dutch could tie them up!
What if it is tied then? Maybe fewest reds?
Who knows!
LOL, Nice Hallmark reference. I like the playoff idea, but because of the length of the tournament, FIFA I'm sure won't have anything to do with that. I think in 1990 Ireland and Holland were tied for second place and Ireland won on drawing lots. The Irish got Romania in the Round of sixteen and Holland had Winners , W. Germany in that nasty Round of sixteen match
That's a good question, Dave. I think a playoff would be fair. Lowest seeded team to win the tiebreaker ?
I thought that I heard the announcer mentioning in the first match that LVG is fighting prostate cancer. Is that true. I'm not his biggest fan, but I would never wish that on him
They did tout the US/England as most important match in US history....that was wrong...today's is!
If they had lost today, a win would have still qualified them....depending on goals
That isn't good. I didn't hear him say it
That's another good idea. It would make the "better" team attack
If they had lost to the England...not today
The announcer said that Senegal has five cards and one of them is Gay. Was that a blooper?
I think I would prefer to take on Ecuador for England and not Senegal. Of course it could still be the Dutch
I would say today and U.S. vs Algeria in 2010 . U.S. had to win and they did 1-0 with a goal by Landy in stoppage time. Also Trinidad vs UY.S. in 1990 when U.S.had to win to qualify and they did 0-1 ,for the first time in forty years. How about U.S. vs England in 1950? I guess it's very subjective.
GOAL ! THE DUTCH TAKE THE LEAD
Cody Gakpo. Was a Leeds target, now a United target
The Dutch take the lead....United's supposed new striker!
That won't hold if he continues to score
The media overhype everything
It was a actually a well worked goal involving Claessen , Gakpo, and timber. Nice one touch passing and a noice finish from Gakpo from the edge of the box
So England appear to be facing Ecuador or Senegal. I'm surprised it took the Dutch so long to score against these numpties
He looks good. I hope he doesn't change his mind and does come to OT
Qatar look to be setting dubious host nation record. Losing all three matches, only scoring a solitary goal, and worst goal difference. At leads , for them, it appears they won't suffer the worst defeat by a host nation
I agree. He looks a good fit for United and ETH will know him form Ajax's matches vs PSV.
A settings stand, fair play not the tiebreaker. Dutch ahead on points and Ecuador looking to be group runners up, but that could all change
I don't think LVG will be happy with then first half performance. Surely, he will rattle a few teapots at the half. The last thing Qatar will want
Cody Gakpo now tied with Mbappe and Enner Valencia on three goals, but Mbappe still top due to his one assist
Cody Gakpo should have had his second goal the match, blasting over with just the keeper to beat. The offside flag was raised
Penalty... ref points to the spot for a Senegal... most people look surprised...it looks like it is the right call
STUPID
PENALTY TO SENEGAL. HINCAPIE SAAR WAS CALLED FOR A BODY CHECK ON SENEGAL'S HORNET.
I thought the same of the penalty decision
Big kick for Senegal....Ecuador only need the draw
1-0 Senegal... could face England next
GOAL!SENEGAL SAAR DOES TAKE THE LEAD AS THE HORNET SENT GALINDEZ THE WRONG WAY
Agreed. It appears that it will be England vs Senegal as things stand. I picked that for first match to go to spot kicks
A trio of stoppage time minutes for Holland vs Qatar
It looks like half a dozen stoppage time minutes for Senegal vs Ecuador
I have to tutor at Noon so I will have to getting ready for it just before the final whistles
I guess it looks like the Dutch vs U.S. or Iran.I would favor the Dutch in either match
Have fun before the big matches at 2
D 3.14 drags a shot wide by more than that. FDutch one up at the half , but I think LVG will be none too pleased
Half time for the Dutch. still going for Senegal
I'm Saar, Gustavo Alfaro will be rattling some teapots at the half in the Ecuador dressing room
Senegal one up at the half
Finally ht.... how will Fox synch up the channels
The second half is underway in both matches.
Double substitution for EcuadorJose Cifuentes of LAFC, on for Carlos Gruezo and former England youth international,Jeremy Sarmiento , of the Seagulls , on for Alan Franco
GOAL ! THE DUTCH GO TWO UP
It was a length possession that started at the back and culminated with Denzel Dumfrees playing the ball back to Davy Klaessen and his cross was volley by D 3.14 , well saved by the keeper and the rebound was easily put away by Frankie De Jong
The Dutch now in clear control of the group while Qatar with all losses and have been out scored 7-1 and counting
GOAL ! THE DUTCH GO THREE UP. THE TWO SUBS COMBINED AS THE DUTCH WALKED THE BALL INTO THE NET. VAR CHECKING FOR HAND BALL. I THINK THIS ONE WILL BE CALLED BACK
I looks like hand ball by Cody Gakpo in the build up to the goal
It's disallowed, still 2-0
Gana Gueye , the Toffee with his requisite booking , which would make him suspended for the England match if Senegal advance. He's not Gana face England
GOAL ! ECUADOR TIES IT UP
Corner from Plata was headed on by Felix Torres and volleyed in at the far post by one of Ecuador's Seagulls, Moises Caicedo
Ecuador now back in second place and looking to face England in the round of sixteen as they did in 2006
GOAL! SENEGLA BACK IN THE LEAD. THAT DIODN'T LAST LONG LONG. COULIBALY WITH THE GOAL . NOW 2-1 SENEGAL
The Chelsea center back currently the hero as that free kick was Gana to cause Ecuador problems as it went off an Ecuador player and the later Koulibaly scored with a cracking volley
Despite the score being 2-1 , none of the goals have come from open play. The goals have been scored from a spot kick and two set pieces. The last two goals scored by players managed by Graham Harry Potter,. Caicedo and Koulibaly
Now it's back to England vs Senegal , but one of their stars isn't Gana be able to face them due to requisite bookings
A double substitution by Aliou Cisse. Bamba Dieng on for Evil |Blade,Ndiaye and Mendy of the Foxes, on for Cisse.
The Room and Gakpo off for Koopenmeiners and Weghorst . Wout about that?
Sorry. The Roon.
I missed a lot on my walk with Shadow...he wouldn't stop!
Frankie De Jong replaced by Kenneth Taylor. How did a a player with that name end up playing for the Dutch?
Shadow must like the cooler weather. Hopefully he won't be asking between 2 PM and 4 PM.
Got that right!
So far, I know of three players at this World Cup who switched their allegiances from England to another country
Shad is a husky mix...he loves the snow!
Welcome back. Good second half in the Senegal vs Ecuador match. Holland vs Qatar not so much
Half a dozen stoppage time minutes in the Dutch vs Qatar match
Qatar with closes and have scored a solitary goal. So much for being the host nation even though Saudi Arabia have been more like the host nation than Qatar.
OH! Curling shot off the bar. Nearly 3-0 Dutch
Qatar fans not looking pleased. That's their problem.
JPDC always commentates so oddly! He gets excited for a nothing event!
We have had some but it the white stuff is gone for now. It will be back
A week from tomorrow, I will be in San Diego for my wife's twin brother's wedding. I won't be back until the following Monday
Same amount of stoppage time in the other match, but three and a half minutes behind
Have fun . Sorry you won't be around for some of the matches, but it's a weird time of the year for the WC.
Ecuador has a corner. They scored on their last one
I am off to set up for tutoring.
I won't be commenting much for the big two matches. I want to concentrate on the two screens and not the computer
COME ON ENGLAND/USA
COME ON ENGLAND/USA
COME ON ENGLAND/USA
TTFN
Curling corner pawed around by the keeper. Another Ecuador corner
Holland has defeated Qatar 2-0
Cheers, Dave. Have fun. I'm going for the same two teams
The Dutch win the group and will likely face either the U.S. or Iran in the round of sixteen
It's over and Senegal have won 2-1. They advance as group runners up and will likely face England in the round of sixteen
Hiya, boys - I'm just home from my class and settling in to enjoy the afternoon's matches. Let's go!
The England side for today:
England (4-1-2-3) Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice; Henderson, Bellingham; Foden, Kane, Rashford.
Substitutes: Pope, Ramsdale, Grealish, Sterling, Trippier, Phillips, Dier, Coady, Saka, Alexander-Arnold, Mount, Wilson, Maddison, Gallagher.
And the Leek Eaters:
Wales (possible 4-2-3-1) Ward; N Williams, Mepham, Rodon, Davies; Ampadu, Allen; Bale, Ramsey, James; Moore.
Substitutes: A Davies, Gunter, Wilson, Johnson, Roberts, Morrell, Lockyer, J Williams, Harris, Thomas, Levitt, Cabango, Colwill, Smith.
I've got the England v. Wales match on the big screen and the US v. Iran match on the PIP little screen. I might swap over if it looks as if England are cruising it.
Good Afternoon, Bob. I guess I'm the odd one out. I'm focused don the U.S. vs Iran . IU'm really am none too fussed about England vs Wales.
I'm the reverse of you. There's far more at stake in the U.S. vs Iran. England is all but through and Wales is all but out. I will still have my eye on that match, but not as much
I expected to see Southgate rest a few more but I'm happy to see that it's a strong line-up, with Kyle Walker replacing Kieran Trippier, Phil Foden replacing Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford replacing Raheem Sterling. Plenty of firepower off the bench if necessary.
Iranian players didn't sing the anthem vs england, but are during the U.S. Why the change of heart? Lots of boos during their anthem
Welcome back, David - I get that totally. There is definitely more at stake in the US match and I may well swap out matches at half time if things are going well.
The U.S.keep Sargent Josh in the starting lineup. There was talk of the Canaries striker being dropped, but hard to fault him against England as he was mainly doing a chasing job
Cheers, Bob. Looks a pro American crowd at the match. I expect this to go down to the wire as it did vs Algeria in 2010 when it was a similar situation
The Iranian players were threatened that their families in Iran would be arrested. I'm not surprised that they caved in to the pressure. I'm glad that the US squad took the stance that they did.
Three players starting for the U.S. that were eligible to play for England
Agreed, Bob. Sad that the players were pressured like that. How does that get the players to want to play for their country? I guess that helps the U.S. Thanks for the clarification
Not keen on Phil Foden razor cut - very chavvy.
The announcer says it's a pro Iran crowd. That's what it was when Iran won 2-1 in 1998 in France
And we're away in both matches now. Come on the Three Lions and the Yanks!
England vs Wales is underway about 25 seconds before U.S. vs Iran. Not exactly simultaneous
I second that, Bob.
I've noticed that all of the Middle Eastern and Northern African sides have had a lot of support.
The U.S. really needs to mark Porto striker , Taremi , out of the game. everything Iran does seems to depend upon him
Agreed, especially Saudi Arabia , who are more like the host nation than Qatar.
I know of three players at this WC who switched their allegiance from England to another country. Came you name them?
I wonder if any of them will survive the Group Stage? I doubt it.
Slow start here in the England v. Wales match. How are things in the other one?
A spell of Iran pressure. Both teams going for it early doors. I like that
That's a great trivia question. I believe that my pal Dan James is one.
Of the three players one has not and two are maybes.
Sorry, mate. Dan James was born in Hull, but never represented England at youth level. Each of these three players did.
If you're referring to Arab countries , Morocco has a great chance of advancing and there are several maybes
Cross from Antonee Robinson headed out then volleyed over by Musah
Our favorite Span isa referee in charge for this match,. which may be a good thing as he's very strict in case the Iranians try any gamesmanship. If Iran advances it needs to be on their own merit
Oh - first real chance of the match here falls to Marcus Rashford. Danny Ward did well to smother it.
Header from Puli straight to the keeper off a cross from Musah
All of Iran's four goals have come in the second half, so they are a fairly fit team. Also Iran have the coaching edge as I would pick Queroz ahead of the Beer Holder any day
And the danger is that the US have looked heavy in the legs in the second half in their matches.
That would make it advantage Iran in a tight match
First free kick chance for England - headed out and Phil Foden shot wide.
Monkey is the second LAFC player to be playing today
Cross from Dest fumbled away by the keeper then hoofed away
Another England free kick
Iran now sitting back, which makes sense as a draw is enough for them to advance unless Wales defeats England
Kieffer with one Moore Welsh foul; on Kyle who was runner, not a walker
Possession football from England - nothing terribly spectacular.
Hmmm...I've got my thinking cap on for those other ones. I noticed there was a young bloke playing for Spain the other day named Williams. Possibly him?
Welsh player down injured. Not sure who it is
Well, Ian Darke just gave away one of the three - Neko Williams.
No he is of Gahnaian descent. He plays for Spain and his brother plays for Ghana
Half-way through the first half - England still in pole position but the US are in third. They need a goal.
Neco Williams plays for Wales and Nico Williams plays for Spain. Nico's brother, Inaki, plays for Ghana. Any questions?
Agreed. It's as you were prior to kickoff.
Also, Kenneth Taylor plays for the Dutch, but he's not one of the three. He was born and raised in Alkmaar
OH! Sergeant Josh with a blocked shot that goes up into the air and with just the keeper to beat Tim Weah heads straight to the keeper
It's a challenging question, mate. Two of them are playing today
Dan James into the book for a chop on John Stones.
Iran now camped just outside their box. Carlos Queroz playing for a 0-0 draw , as expected
I wondered if there was an American guy who might qualify for England but I don't think so. It's got to be two Welshman.
That's a risky proposition for the Iranians.
Why is play stopped. Iranian player down, but it's not a head injury. That's time wasting and the ref has been conned.
There's actually three Americans that qualify for England. None of the three are Welsh
OH! Tim Weah blast over from ten yards out. Should have at least tested the keeper
It looks like like Connor Roberts is about to come on for Wales for Nico Williams, not Neco. Is that right, Bob?
Are we headed for n nineteen 0-0 halftime scores? There were twenty in the 2010 WC .,
Dest with a cross deflected for a corner. The second of the match for the U.S.
The iran ians were wise to the U.S. training ground routine corner. Snuffed it out with no problem
Phil Foden well over for England
Oh - big chance for Foden after some nice stuff from Rashford. Blasted over.
WAY HAY! PULI GIVES THE U.S. THE LEAD
A long diagonal from Weston McKinnie was headed on by Dest and Puli scored with a diving header. He's down as he ran into the keeper's knee.
YESSSSS!!!!!
Pulsiic comes up trumps finishing off a center from Dest. 1-0 US!
Puli still down. This is a huge concern for the U.S.
U.S. now second, behind England on goal difference.
It was a half volley, not a diving header
Now England need a goal in order to assure that they'll continue on top of the group.
After a stoppage of several minutes Iran kicks off. U.S. temporarily down a man
A goal would definitely help England. They're still well ahead on goal difference
Tyler Adams booked, basically for a tactical foul
Puli is thankfully back on
Ian Darke mentioned that Wales might have a penalty but don't see that that's the case.
OH! Too much passing in the Iran box when the U.S. had a good chance to go two up
Great news about Pulisic - the US will need him for sure.
It looks lime play is continuing. , so Wales must not have been awarded a penalty
A quintet of stoppage time minutes in both matches. Probably a half dozen in the U.S. vs Iran match as an Iranian player was down
Kane wins a corner for England. Now's the time for a Harry Mags headed goal.
Keep it up US
COME ON ENGLAND...ATTACK WITH PACE
Now Iran is temporarily down to ten men. They just made a substitution
Stones won the header but Danny Ward clung on.
Agreed, Dave. It appears that we are headed for eighteen 0-0 halftime scores.
Wee Joe curls a shot over for Wales
Oh - Joe Allen had a real chance there. That's the danger for England when it's still 0-0.
And that's it - I believe that's the 18th goal-less first.
England vs wales is 0-0 at the half. The eighteenth of this WC
BUGGER! TIM WEAH HAS A GOAL DISALLOWED FOR OFFSIDE.
VAR not reviewing because Iran immediately restarted
The U.S is one up at the half. I don't know if the goal was correctly disallowed for offside
The second half of England vs Wales is underway
Sam Ghodos, of the Bees on for Azmoun as Iran has one window remaining g for subs. Brendan Aaronson on for what I think is Puli as the second half is underway
Nice free kick chance now for England. No Trippier about so it looks to be Rash who's lining it up.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!
Rash with a spectacular drive to put England 1-0 up!
Antonee Robinson wins a U.S. corner as two Iranian defenders are having a nasty argument
