Qatar 2022 - Day 12
Morning, chaps - it's another big day in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with two more groups - Groups E and F wrapping up their play. Both groups are wide open with no teams having qualified for the Round of 16 and only Canada having been eliminated from the tournament. I'll be a bit in and out due to work but I'll be touching base with matches as I can.
Enjoy the footer today!

Morning, boys - just checking in ahead of my class to see how the matches are going. I've got the Belgium v. Croatia match up on my computer here in the office.
Morocco have already scored twice against Canada, so Morocco will top the group at the end of the day. The drama now is in who will join them in the second slot and face Spain in the R16. As it stands, it will be Croatia unless Belgium can do something.
Half an hour in and, apart from the penalty shout that was ruled out for offside, Belgium haven't looked close to scoring.
Goalless at half-time between Croatia and Belgium (the 23rd such drawn first half!), which suits Croatia just fine.
Meanwhile, Morocco are leading Canada 2-1 on the FS1 match.
Croatia are knocking on the door here - Courtois has saved several from Brozovic and Modric. Belgium are on the edge of elimination here.
Lukaku hits the post! What a chance for Belgium! De Bruyne put Carrasco through on goal with a subtle, angled through pass. His shot was blocked brilliantly by Juranovic, stretching just in front of the goalkeeper, and Lukaku slapped the loose ball off the inside of the near post!
Half an hour left in this one - Croatia still hanging on to that second slot, with Morocco still 2-1 up over Canada.
Another chance for Lukaku! De Bruyne’s cross from the left nicks off the head of Lovren, taking Livakovic out of the game in the process, and is headed over an open goal by Lukaku. That really was a sitter, although I’m not sure it would have counted – it looked like the ball was out of play before De Bruyne crossed it.
Coming down to the last five minutes of regular time now - Belgium heading out if they can't find a winning goal.
Oh - it's yet another sitter missed by Lukaku!
Honestly, he could have had a hat-trick today.
Belgian fans looking really forlorn now.
Oh - Lukaku was in there but a last ditch slide in took it off his toe - this is extraordinary stuff!
On the replay, that toe poke away by Gvardiol looks even better.
Two minutes left of this stoppage time period.
That's it - Belgium have gone crashing out of the World Cup at the first hurdle. They're the first big team to go out. It's an end of an era for this team. The Belgian side that runs out for the 2024 Euros will be very different, I suspect.
Over to the other match, where Morocco have won the group with a 2-1 win. They'll go on to meet up with the second placed team in Group E.
I'm back after lunch and just tuning into FS1 in my office to watch Germany v. CR when Serge Gnabry glances a header in to put the Germans 1-0 up!
Early goal for Spain by my Golden Boot Boy Alvaro Morata in the other one.
So Spain and Germany going through in this group as things are right now.
Oh - Goretzka ghosts in at the backpost to test Keylor Navas. Good save!
Musiala seems like a really special player.
Oh - terrible mistake there by Rudiger who allowed the CR forward in there who then blasted over. Big chance for the Ticos.
Half-time in these Group E matches. Both Spain and Germany are 1-0 up and everything seems to be drifting to the conventional result with Spain going through top to meet Croatia and Germany sliding into second to meet Morocco.
We're back on for the second half. This one is still on a knife's edge. Japan need merely one goal to send Germany out and I'm not sure that Spain won't be generous as that one starts to wind down.
Wahay! The Japanese have scored and now the cat's amongst the pigeons in Group E!
If the Ticos could find an equalizer, Germany would be bottom of the group!
The Germans are a bit under the cosh now!
Oh my! The Japanese have turned this match around with a second goal now by Tanaka. There was a VAR check to make sure that the ball was over the line.
Now the Japanese are top of the group with Spain in second.
Not a thing that the Germans can do about this apart from pray that the Spanish score another two. I can't really see them being that arsed about it. Wouldn't they prefer to play Morocco than Croatia?
Oh my - Tejeda has equalized for Costa Rica - now it really is a desperate situation for the Germans. They now need a goal and two goals from Spain. Looking really bleak.
One more goal for CR and Spain AND Germany go home!
OMG... CR TAKE THE LEAD
SPAIN GOING OUT!!
Oh my giddy aunt! What a howler from Neuer!
It's 2-1 Ticos!
Can you believe it?! Spain, Germany, and Belgium might all be going out the same day.
It counts
Japan in first
Costa Rica second!
It is a goal. Twenty minutes to go and Germany and Spain need a miracle now.
BUGGER
2-2 Germany CR
Bugger! Havertz gets an equalizer. What a match!
Just back from my flu shot. Missed all Japan comeback but saw the CR's
This means nothing for Germany really. They need Japan to drop point and goals
What a save... was he offside...no
Ticos really giving it a go. They are dangerous going forward.
Oh - what a save by Navas!
This is a thrillfest now.
Glad you got your flu jab - there's a lot of it circulating among my students.
Wanted to get it before I jetted off to San Diego next Wednesday
Oh shame that Benette couldn't rifle that one in. Well high.
Come on, the Ticos!
I know you don't follow cricket any more but England just started a test match in Pakistan for the first time in 17 years.
They ended Day 1 with over 500 runs with four batsman scoring a ton each. They have only lost 4 wickets!
GRRRR Germany lead...still need help
That's torn it - Havertz with another goal. 3-2 now. They're saving Spanish bacon but they need help from the Spanish.
Ticos need two goals now. Come on!
The lady is saying Spain going out...no their not
Germany are still going out
Another one? Nope - offside this time.
Oh - Dani Olmo had a chance there to equalize Well held by the Japanese keeper.
Germany take a 4-2 lead
Lots of stoppage time now.
I hate that rule...the guy who scored was miles offside!
He had a head start!
7 added minutes
That match is moot now - I don't think that Spain are that concerned. Why would they want to help out Germany? A match-up against Morocco suits them just fine.
Spain still just passing around.... HATE IT
They can't be arsed to score.
Spain still not showing much urgency!
Brazil and Argentina in one half
England, France, Spain in the other
Blow up ref
2 WCs in a row Germany don't make it out of the group stages?
That's it! Japan have done it!
YES!!!
GERMANY ARE GOING HOME!
Crazy - the Germans really are down in the dumps. Need a total revamp.
I can only imagine how excited my Japanese friends in Miyazaki are right now.
I am off to work
TTFN
That's it for me - I'm off to class, mate. I'll catch you in the morning for the Group H action.
Cheerio!
