Qatar 2022 - Day 11

Morning, chaps - I'm still recovering from the glorious day yesterday - with both England and the US advancing to the Round of 16 - and we're on to the next set of final group games. Today, it's the turn of Groups C and D. France have already advanced out of Group D, but everything else is up for grabs. My hope is that today's play will produce a France v. Argentina match-up in the R16.

Join me for all the thrills and spills.

Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. I have the split screen on. In the afternoon I'm rooting for Mexico against the Saudis.

9:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If both afternoon matches are draws your wish will come true. I could see that happening.

10:00 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off in both matches.Australia vs Denmark kicked off first

10:01 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yes! Tunisia draw first blood!

Nope it's been flagged offside, sadly.

VAR check.

10:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !TUNISIA TAKES A SURPRISE LEAD No it's disallowed as Ghandri headed in a free kick and reserve keeper, Steve Mandanda looked clueless. France may regret starting a reserve side

10:10 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If Tunisia win then it still comes down to the result of the other match. I would rather the Aussies or Danes go through with France than Tunisia

10:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Former Black Cat, Khazri with a horrible attempt to win a penalty with a horrible dive. I'm none too pleased that JP DLC is encouraging that as an announcer. It's cheating and should be a booking. It makes me not want to watch or at least listen

10:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If these results hold then the Aussies will go through with France. Each team's status for advancing is as follows: France already through and need a draw to win the group,, Aussies need a draw and for Tunisia to lose or draw, Danes need a win and for Tunisia not to win by more than them . Tunisia with the same need as the Danes

Morning, David - how are you this morning. A lot of rain here today so I'm feeling fortunate that I don't have a meeting that would drag me over to campus.

10:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

If anything, Tunisia has been the better side so far. This shows us what I've been saying all tournament. I don't think that this French side is really that good. I think Brazil, Spain and arguably England have more depth in their squads.

10:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good Morning, Bob. Thankfully it rained here last night and starting to clear. Glad you don't have to go anywhere in the rain

10:25 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Coman bursts through but shanks his shot wide.

10:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

France is playing a reserve side knowing that they're through. They still have a starting side that can go toe to toe with anyone. The tougher three sides will look just as average with their reserves playing. I think it's a tossup which ope the four sides are best. France started slowly last World Cup and weren't any better in the group. It may be different in the knockout stages

10:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tunisia is up for this match as many of their players were born and raised in France even though there is one German born and one Danish born player in the squad. This may be their cup final

10:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Do you have a lot of snow on the ground or did it all melt? Hopefully , all this rain won't cause flooding during the thaw.

10:28 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yes, it's the classic colonial match-up, isn't it?

10:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Definitely so, mate and given a chance as France is resting a lot of their starters

10:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Steve Mandanad a dives a saves a long range swerver from Khazri ., That was a tricky save

10:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tunisia has yet to score this tournament. They had one disallowed for offside early in this match

10:36 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

If France's second team puts this Tunisian team to the sword like England did with Wales yesterday, then I might change my mind.

10:38 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not a lot of snow left from Thanksgiving week, as we've had a warm up. We're due to get another 3-6 inches overnight but that shouldn't be much of an issue. We always get a bit of water in the corner of our basement during a thaw but not that much that it troubles us.

10:40 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed. That amount is not nearly as severe as the lats blizzard. Hopefully not too much more water in the basement. Yet to snow here this season. We may get some in a few weeks

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

These second teasers won't play in the knockouts unless there is an injury . I still count them as one of the favorites. England played a decent lineup yesterday . The match vs France in the quarters could go to a shootout

10:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Steve and I may lose out top spot since our GBB is on the bench

10:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Both matches drifting goalless toward half-time. How many 0-0 first halfs will that be?

10:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Are we headed for twenty 0-0 halftime scores. If so that would tie the group record set in 2010 and there are still ten group matches left to be played

10:45 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

AN LOB blogging duo of stoppage time minutes in both matches

10:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

As things stand , France and the Aussies will advance.

10:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Aussies vs Danes is 0-0 at the half

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

As is Frtancer vs Tunisia . That's twenty 0-0 halftime scores which ties the record for a group set in 2010 and counting

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The second halves are underway

11:04 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Back after some dishwashing duty to enjoy the second half.

11:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm really surprised that the Danes haven't shown the wherewithal to get past a really ordinary Aussie side.

11:13 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

If Tunisia had a Premier League quality striker, they would be out of sight in this match but they do not possess anyone with conviction of movement or finishing.

11:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yes! There's the breakthrough that Tunisia have been waiting for!

11:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL! TUNISIA TAKERS THE LEAD. EX BLACK CAT, KHAZRI WITH THE GOAL

11:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tackle win in midfield then Laidouni with a short pass to Khazri , who went on a solo run then placed it in the corner past Steve Mandanda

11:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tunisia now second in the group, ahead of the Aussies on goal difference. Both teams will have to attack in the other match because both have to win to advance as things stand

11:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL THE AUSSIES TAKE THE LEAD

11:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Classic counter by the Aussies . Hoy Berg was tackled in the Aussies box trying to pass too Dollberg. Mitchell Duke passed wide left to Teesider, Riley McGree and he found Matt Leckie , who turned Maele , and placed it past Kasper in the corner

11:22 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's thrown the group into total disarray. Now we see how important that late Mbappe goal was the other day. The French would be going out without that goal.

11:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

France still top of the group ,ahead of the Aussies on goal difference. France's goal difference is four better than the Aussies, so barring a miracle France will win the group

11:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Laidouni, who assisted on the Tunisia goal, down. That would be a huge loss. He seems to be up and okay

11:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Actually, France would be ahead of Tunisia on goal difference in second place if they had drawn Denmark. Tunisia would be needing two more goals in that scenario. The Aussies would be top of the group if Mbappe hadn't scored that late winner

11:27 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Aussies need another four goal swing to top the group now and send France into the other side of the bracket.

11:27 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Head to head is not the first tiebreaker in the World Cup. Goal difference is and France is ahead in that category

11:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I guess that goal swing is possible, but it's a tough ask

11:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

VAR checking for a Denmark penalty. They may not get one one because Dollberg was offside . That's the case. Harry Soutar, the Aussie Scots born Potters player will be relieved.

11:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bailey Wright of the Black Cats on for Riley McGree , of the Teesiders. As things stans the Black Cats will have to play without Bailey Wright on Saturday vs the Evil Lions.

11:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That was a defensive change as a defender was on for a midfield player

11:33 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Danes heading out as they need two goals in a quarter of an hour plus stoppage time

11:35 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tunisia have never beaten a European team in the WC. What a win it would be even though it may all be for nothing. Dembele on for the ex Gunners Hair Bear

11:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jamie McLaren, on for Mitchell the Duke , the scorer vs Tunisia

11:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Rubbish effort from Rabiot.

11:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Aberdeen born Potters player,Harry Soutar, has been massive making lots of key tackles to frustrate the Danes

11:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Hrustic on for goal scorer, Matt Leckie

11:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Eight is enough as there are that many stoppage time minutes for France vs Tunisia

11:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I mut have missed Mbappe coming on as his shot was pushed away by the keeper.

11:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Aussies vs Danes has half a dozen stoppage time minutes

11:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Cornelius heads the corner from Eriksen inches over. Will that do it?

11:54 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over. The Aussies win 1-0 and are through to the round of sixteen for only the second time in their history

11:55 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tunisia still winning 1-0, but are out regardless of what happens in that match

11:55 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL ! ADDDING INSULT TO INJURY . GRIEZMANN TIES IT UP.

11:56 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It was a close range volley that took a deflection after a cross was poorly headed

11:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Var checking for something. Not sure what that would be . Possibly a foul

11:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It might have been for that defensive header, which may explain why the header was so poor.

11:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think it's disallowed because Griezmann was offside on the original cross. Tun isa still leading 1-0, but it doesn't change anything

11:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over and Tunisia with a historic 1-0 win vs France , but goes out despite that. France still tops the group.

12:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That set of results really amps up the pressure on the Group D sides coming up. Of course, all our sides will mainly be focused on qualifying for the R16, but there is added incentive to top the group and avoid France in favor of a meet up with Australia.

12:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Absolutely . All four teams in Group D will want to win even though the best Mexico can do is finish runners up.

12:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I won't be around for the first half because I need to pick up Jacquelyn from class. Should be around for the second half.

Isn't it crazy....if Poland win or draw and win the group...the US would play Netherlands then the winner of Poland/Australia for a place in the semi final!

England would have to take on possibly France/Agentina!

I just read what Dave posted about what happens if Poland wins the group. Surely Brazil would have a really easy path to the final. Possibly Ghana in the round of sixteen, possibly Japan in the quarters, then Poland or the Dutch in the semis. Isn't that them being almost handed a place in the final

3:32 PM
