The Big Day!
Okay, boys - it's time to good serious. I was actually okay with seeing the US knocked out yesterday because that's as far as the US really should go in these tournaments. Now we can focus on our first love - England. Before we get to the big match with Senegal this afternoon, we've got France v. Poland this morning.
Come on, England!
203 Comments:
Morning, chaps - this early one is the R16 match that will produce the next opponent for England if they get beyond Senegal.

Referee Jesus Valenzuela Saez (Venezuela)
Olivier Giroud could make history today. He has 51 goals for France, the same as Thierry Henry, and needs one to become France’s all-time leading goalscorer. Not bad for a player who has been lightly patronized throughout his career.
Good Morning, Bob. Here to join you for the big day. Thanks for getting us started.
These teams have met once at the WC, which was the Third place match in 1982. Poland won 3-2.
England and Senegal have never met at the WC, but England's meetings vs African sides have been historically close. Four wins and three draws. The three draws were all 0-0, vs Morocco in 1986, Nigeria in 2002 and Algeria in 2010. The wins were 3-2 vs Cameroon in the quarters in ET in 1990 , 2-0 vs Tunisia in 1998 2-1 vs Tunisia in 2018 , and 1-0 vs Egypt in 1990.
Morning Boys
I'll be here for this match but will be concentrating on the England match and not be looking at my computer screen
Tape Recorder up your nose time!!
Funny...it didn't look the players were singing the right words...doesn't it go.... Ooh aah, ooh aah, ooh aah Cantona, Ooooh Aaah a Cantona?
That third place match in 1982 was technically Poland's last win in the knockout round. Their last knockout match was in the round of sixteen vs Brazil in 1986 when they were thrashed 4-0.
Good Morning, Dave. Ready to feel like Bleu Cheese?
In terms of birthdays and anniversary matches coming up: The first day of the quarters is on what would have bene father-in law's birthday. A possible Argentina vs Brazil semi on the anniversary of my dad's passing , the Third placed match on my birthday and what would have been my dad's birthday , and the final falls on what would have been Elizabeth's grandmother's birthday
Countdown and we are off
France vs Poland is underway
Griezmann wins an early free kick
Early free kick for the World Champs
Poor free kick from Griezmann finds absolutely nobody
No games on our 32nd Wedding Anniversary
Midway between the semis and third place match. Your anniversary is a hppier occasion than the two it falls between
Varane with a header wide
United need to hit his forehead more often
If you look at England;'s record vs African teams I mentioned at 9:53, history tells us it should be a close match vs Senegal.
Agreed. I think he and Lizzy Martinez can be quite a central defensive partnership.
Also, it's my opinion if Mendy was English he would be the starting keeper for England, or at least make the squad.
This is Poland's first knockout match at the WC in 36 years. it's been lean times for them since then
Poland's best World Cups were third in 1974 and 1982 with their golden generation. I already mentioned 1982
Run and cross from Mbappe headed out for a France corner
Looks like I'm being ignored, so I'm signing off till further notice .
You're not being ignored. I am just doing stuff around the house
I hate how they have all these comments from the sidelines....she will keep talking even if a goal would happen!!
Hi guys - I'm back from settling the twins for their naps. How's it been so far?
All France with a a couple of attacks from the Poles...how we thought it would be
I guess I'm back. So far FGrance has dominated. Poland playing for penalties
ooh...almost in there
Why did you leave? No one. is ignoring you at all
If I'm not being ignored then whow about my comments at 9:53 and 9:57?
I'm back. Sorry I thought it was the case
Third save by Su Su Sudio
Just wide by Lew...come on...bury that!
Of course, I'm sure that all of us are pulling for the Poles this morning.
Lon g range shot from Lew not too far wide. Poland's first chance of the match.
I did read those comments. I appreciated the facts
Correct Bob...POLE PULLING IS THE NAME OF THE GAME
I have the background for this match at 9:50 and 9:57 , and for the England match at 9:53
Ah, shame that Polish attack didn't develop.
I'm off to do some kitchen cleanup. Sorry, I'm so in and out this morning. Busy day.
I'm Pole pulling , but I would be really shocked if they pull this out
Of course, the World Champs and England are relegated to FS1 because of the NFL
I am sure, sadly, that would have been the same even if the US had won the group and played today
Poles starting to get some chances!
COME ON!!
You have twins.... we know!
Kicked the ball away... book him
England with a great 3-0 win vs Poland in 1986 thanks to that first half Lineker hat-trick, but a nightmare at Wembley in 1973. Not sure why Clough criticized their keeper. He played well every time I watched him
Agreed. Sad about the coverage. Just shows that footie has a long way to go in this country. For once the three numpties were insightful when they mentioned that yesterday
I remember both matches... England were dire for the first two matches and then Gary gets the hat-trick.
I heard Gary saying that he was awful during the first two matches and thought he would be dropped. It was Hatley that didn't make it and Beardsley came in to play next to him
I still cringed when I think about how Lineker missed a header at the back post against the Argies...almost identical to his first goal
In terms of 0-0s . There were half a dozen in the group which tied 2010.In terms of 0-0 halftimes, the 24 in the group broke the twenty at 2010. There were five in the knockout rounds of 2010, four by Spain, who won it all. The record for a tournament is 25 in 2010, which may be broken this time out
Phew... Giroud misses from 3 feet out
OH! Olly misses a sitter at the far post off a run and pass from Dembele. Would that have broken TH's record?
I have to leave for a bit. Gotta FaceTime the "other" birthday boy
Agreed. England were horrible ion those first two matches. Gave the Argies their toughness match of that tournament. But for Maradonna probably would have won the WC that year
Cheers. Catch you later.
Go on, the Poles - this free kick has to fly in.
Facetime has been delayed
Thanks for that excellent anoraking, David. It makes me even more confident that England could match up well against the Poles.
Lew with a free kick....straight into the wall
Cheers, Bob. Sadly my anoraking shows that it will be tough vs Senegal if history proves anything
Geez... got her yapping again...she keeps talking as the ball goes in the box...NO ONE cares what she is talking about!
I hope that history means nothing today...except for not losing
I have a question. Is it true that Lloris and Bartez have been France's only starting keepers at the WC since 1986? I know that would not have been true if they qualified in 1990.
Crazy Arsenal had both Szczesny and Fabianski - what great depth or scouting at GK. He’s had a great tourney so far. Could be busy today!
Agreed, Dave. I hope her story is true instead of history.
BOOM BOOM!
DAMN IT!!!
HOW DID POLAND NOT SCORE!!
Lloris with a save then saved off the line!
That has to go in!
True, anonymous. Flappy is not at this WC. Also you forgot Emi Martinez , starting for Argentina this QWC and late night host, Jay Leno, who I didn't make Germany's WC squad this time out
Checking for handball...it won't be given..it isn't
Poles have confidence
OH! Great close range kick save by Lloris then the rebound cleared off the line . How did Poland not take the lead?
No they didn't qualify in 1990. So I guess ithe last time someone there than Lloris or Bartez were first choice at the WC was back in the 80s during the days of Platini and Co.
France has yet to win a WC without Deschamps in some capacity. Too dependent upon him?
If Mbappe gets even an asset he becomes GBB. That's eight points for Steve, teddy , and Yours Truly. Harry Kane leader in assists at this WC.
Totally agree with you, Dave, about the peripheral commentary. We used to get just one commentator - Brian Moore. That was it.
Poland must not concede like the US did yesterday
And... maybe Jimmy Hill or Trevor Brooking saying something every 15 minutes
BUGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOAL! Giroud breaks the scoring record for France! Great time for Les Bleus to score.
GOAL ! OLLY GIVES FRANCE THE LEAD. TO SCORER IN FRENCH HISTORY
The ball bounced off the ground
Mbappe with the assist , which makes him GBB
Tidy finish there, especially given that it was a bit behind him.
The French, sadly, 1-0 up with the Poles having to chase this one now.
The former Gunner scores off the former Gunner on the Gunner fan's birthday
Poles almost equalize...England should take note...France give up chances...TAKE THEM
Hugo....damn...he survives
Oh - Kaminski nearly in there. Shot deflected out.
From the corner, Lloris made a total hash of a looping header.
OH! Llloris with his Bartez impersonation as he fuels a headed on corner , but gathers at the second attempt
So both Mbappe and Giroud on three goals - ominous.
HT... France haven't won this
Mbappe with three goals and two assists is GBB. France one up at the half
There's the half-time whistle then. Not good.
Tomorrow's matches back to Fox
Wonder what they are going to do with the Final....ON A SUNDAY!
Teams are out for the second half
The second half is underway.
Off we go
We're away in the second half now. Come on, you Poles!
Just a reminder Mbappe is now GBB due to his two assists. Also, I guess I'm correct about Lloris and Bartez being France's only two starting keepers at the WC since 1986
Berezinski fouls Dembele just outside the box. That looked a fair tackle on the replay
Free kick chance for the French...from a perfectly good tackle...that he got carded for
So close to Varane's head and that would have been in
Su Su Sudio punches away the free kick from Griezmann then The Hernandez imitates Yours Truly with a volley that threatens the corner flag instead of the goal
BTW....there are United goals all over the place in this World Cup.... past and present
Su Su Sudio leads the tournament with 24 saves according to John Strong. ThBut for himMexico would be playing France instead of Poland
Agreed. Today though it's a Gunners day since it's Steve's birthday
The commentator affirmed your GBB stat
Yes...but again... stat is skewed because they didn't play a game in the WC for 12 years!
Mbappe is one player I wish would go to Unite even though I think Gakpo will do a good job
Of course, the danger for the Poles is that they concede again on the break. France have a lot of weapons.
I'm not sure that Mbappe would fit into the United scheme.
Wonder who is on a yellow for the French. They would be banned for the next match
The slate doesn't get cleared until after the QF
Scheme SHMEME...he can come to OT anytime
I guess so, but how about France only having two regular starting keepers in the last 24 years and past seven WCs . Can England say that? Too much turnover by other countries in that position. In my opinion that's a great stat by France
All this crap of rotation...IT IS THE WORLD CUP...PLAY EVERY GAME
I don't really rate either Barthez or Lloris
OH! Shot by Mbaooe deflected inches wide
The French continuing to press - Poland can barely get out of their own half.
Ball in the net...but the whistle went way before the ball went in the net
Great finish by Giroud
Rate them or not, and I'm not a Bartez fan due to his horrible form at United, it's a highly unusual stat. I meant it for that reason more than them being great keepers. It's a very rare stat and meant for that purpose rather than another reason. Maybe it shows that France has problems finding good keepers
Brilliant bicycle kick by Olly. The ref blew the whistle too early . I didn't see a foul, just a collision
I guess this ref doesn't have to follow the rules
OH! Mbappe took too long to shoot. Great French attack. Nice passing
That is kind of a shame that the Olly goal didn't stand but I understand the ref's call.
Dave, to answer your question about French bookings,NOBODY is in trouble. Only two French players have been booked the entire tournament, each has one card. Everyone is available. Not the news you wanted to read
Welcome back, Bob. The problem with the disallowed goal is that the ref is supposed to wait until, the play finishers two make a decision and blew the whistle too early. Therefore, according to the rules, the play couldn't be reviewed. According to Mark Clattenburg, he didn't follow the rules brought up in the referees meeting
Milik on for Szymanski
The sun came out here just before halftime. Is that a good vibe for England?
Volley from Olly just wide but wasn't going to score from that angle
Oh - best move of the half. Long diagonal out to the winger who crosses in and Kaminski just couldn't get to it.
I think that is a good omen for the Three Lions. Come on!
I answered Dave's question about the French card trouble at 11:19. Not good news
GOAL! MBAPPE PUTS FRANCE TWO UP WITH A NICE FINISH. HIS FOURTH GOAL OF THE TOURNAMENT
Mbappe! He's a killer. French 2-0 up.
Not good news at all, David. The French will be at full strength in the quarters.
Great French football after desperate defending a long clearance found Olly , who played it too Dembele and he passed to Mabppe for that great finish
The two people who combined for the second goal off. Dembele and Olly off for Kinglsley Coman ,son of Thuram
Let's hope HK can score four today and lead the GBB stakes. I need the points!
England with only two starting keepers at the WC between 1966 and 1990. Banks and Shilts . Matched France with two first choice keepers in 24 years and twelve years between World Cups.
Right now I think Steve and I are the top two due to Mbappe being GBB.
Sorry, Bob., but I don't see that since England's record win against an African team at the WC is 2-0. They did score three against Cameroon with ET needed.
So far, all of the favorites are going through with no upsets. Let's hope that continues this afternoon. I would be four for four on the predictions.
Just a reminder I get a couple of extra points if England vs Senegal goes to penalties
Me too, but the next two days the round of sixteen matches get tougher for us on the predictions
Off to do some diaper duty. This one seems over.
I know you all don't agree with me , but France have deserved their win. They haven't bene perfect , but have been the better team
GOA ! MBAPPE AT THE DOUBLE AS FRANCE GOES THREE UP. NICE FINISH IN THE UPPER 90
That's five goals and two assist this WC. Surely the best player so far this WC by far
Hey Guys
I was FaceTiming
Quite a player Mbappe is
Still...England....if....can cause this side problems
I know you think that stat with the French keepers was meaningless, but I thought it was insightful Incase you';re interested I came up with an identical one with Banks and SHilts
Poland get a pen.... Lew to score with his last touch in the WC?
Penalty to Poland on probable;y the last kick of the match after a VAR review. This ref has been horrible.
Up he comes...ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC!!!!
Gets another chance... that should be illegal!!
Just go up and shoot the ball!!
You do it all the time
A horrible LEW penalty is saved . It's going to be retaken because Lloris went way off his line
Just shoot.....up he comes again....He did it again...but still horrible!
This time he sends Lloris the wrong way with a Jorginho style penalty and it's a consolation goal. Now 3-1 to France
He gets his goal... it should be illegal...all the rules they could change...change this!
Last kick of the game
France into the QF
That is it for me
COME ON ENGLAND!
It's over and France wins 3-1. It will be tough for England to defeat them
France into the quarters ominously. They're basically Mbappe and ten other guys.
I won't be around for the late match. Will either be on a walking trail with Trooper or watching without commenting. Not sure yet.
Here is the team news for the big one:
England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Henderson, Rice, Bellingham, Saka, Kane, Foden.

I'm going to FaceTime with the Gooner for his birthday.
The new version of "Three Lions" is pumping in the Cottage!
Bukayo Saka’s replacement of Marcus Rashford is the one change to the England starting XI from the 3-0 defeat of Wales. Raheem Sterling is absent altogether as he deals with a family matter.
Senegal are without defensive midfielder Idrissa Gueye. The Everton man picked up his second yellow of the tournament in the 2-1 win over Ecuador and is suspended. Nampalys Mendy of Leicester City takes over in midfield, while Monaco winger Krepin Diatta replaces Gueye.
The anthems are finished aren't we're nearly set to go now. Come on, you Three Lions!
A bit of early danger for England but Harry Maguire mopped up.
Bellingham wins a good free kick chance.
Training pitch routine nearly came off there.
Oh - Saka nearly in there as Abdou Diallo dithers on it.
Oh - Bellingham's cross evaded Mendy.
Total England possession domination now as the Senegalese drop off. That's a good sign.
Oh - Kane got through on Maguire's ball but his cross wasn't accurate.
England have enjoyed 60 percent of possession so far. Senegal just 25.
Nasty challenge on Kane there. The ref will have to watch the tackles coming in.
Kane nearly fed Foden there. HK's got three assists already and he seems in the mood again tonight.
Another bad foul - come on, ref, get the card out!
Diallo gifted England a corner - now, let's make the most of it!
Oh - John Stones had a free header there but got the header all wrong.
Oh - big chance there for Senegal - Sa blasting over right in front of Pickers.
VAR check for a handball on Stones. Nothing doing.
Ian Darke really tempting fate with his comments. Knock it off!
Coming up on the half hour - very patient approach from England, with Senegal just trying to spring breaks.
England take the sting out of the game with a little bit of sterile professionalism in the centre circle. Not the worst idea in the wake of that close call, Senegal with their tails up.
Oh - great save by Pickers there! One handed!
Walker gives away a free kick now - mark 'em up!
England need a goal at the end of this half, like France got.
And there it is!
Hendo puts England 1-0 up!
YESSSSSS!!!!!!
HK blasts one in to make it 2-0!
Back after some laundry folding for the start of the second half.
Oh - nice turnover move from Rice to Kane who fed Saka. The angle was too tight for him.
Oh - Kane has a go from distance and Mendy nearly makes a complete hash of it.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!
England are running away with it now, a slick move ending with Saka dinking home!
3-0!
England are rampant now, looking like they'll score with every attack.
Just when the Senegalese thought it couldn't get any worse, here come Rash and Grealish. I want more goals!
Senegal win a free kick in a useful position. Mark 'em up!
Phew! Into the side netting.
Mason Mount about to come on now. And Kal Phillips as well.
Bellingham and Stones make way.
Free kick chance now for England - come on!
Senegal still giving it a go.
No let up, England.
Oh - Shaw hits the woodwork with his cross and then Rash slides in at the back post.
