Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Holland vs. Ivory Coast

Battle of the Oranges next. Could be fun. I'm online.

Nice choice of images, mate. I see they've sorted out the kit conundrum. IC in all white, Dutch in all orange. Result of a coin toss, I assume.

Your boy Kolo has to get a grip on his teammates here. If Van Horsey were sharper, the Dutch might be one up already.

Van Bronckhorst got a let-off there. I've seen those given, although your boy Eboue went to ground a bit too easily.

I reckon that this is the match-up that will produce England's quarterfinal opponents. The winner will likely play Portugal in the Round of Sixteen. I don't rate the Portuguese and I reckon that either of these sides could beat them. So, which one would we rather play?

I say - Come on you Elephants!

GOAL! 1-0 Holland; Van Persie thunders home a free kick after Zokora had picked up a yellow for a rash challenge. Tizie looked a bit foolish on that one, but the pace of the shot probably would've beaten most keepers.

wallop! yeah, that was all about the velocity.

and then van horseyface starts his account off.

battle royale next week against argentina. mouth-watering.

GOAL: 2-0; Robben tears up the left side, lays off to Ruud, who is all alone in the area and slots home. That'll do Van Horsey some good with his confidence. The Elephants are all at sea at the moment and looking down the barrel of an early exit having played fairly well in their two games. That's the "Group of Death" dynamic for you. Now it's looking like Portugal vs. Holland in the Round of Sixteen - could be tasty.

I don't know about that Holland vs. Argie match next week. The goal difference hugely favors the Argies. I reckon they might rest Riquelme, Saviola and maybe one or two players on yellows. The Dutch might also not show up. It could be a bore, but I'd love to see both teams rip it up.

OOOOH, shame that one from Zokora didn't go in to shake up this match. You'd have to think that Ivory Coast would get out of pretty any other group but Group C.

Now, Robben's picked up a card for diving. Nice one, ref. That was fairly obvious.

It does put some pressure on the Portuguese and Mexicans. Neither will want to face the Argies after that display today. Even a match against Holland won't be exactly what they'd like. I reckon both Group C teams go through to the quarters. England vs. Holland - I'll take a repeat of '96 - you?

GOAL: 2-1; Kona unleashes a fierce drive. Game on!

Shame that Drogba didn't release that ball earlier; they were off to the races. Could've equalized at an ideal time.

Why is van Persie taking corners? Honestly, does Arsene spread the fear of head injuries among his strikers?

Half-time: 2-1; Cracking match - one of the best of the tournament. The Ivory Coast could've easily equalized, but the Dutch are hanging on to a slim margin. Excellent performances from both sets of forwards. Shame about the defenses.

i think i'm pulling for the dutch here. i'm of course watching the arsenal boys and by my reckoning, eboue and toure look a bit tired out. if they had an early exit, they might get a rest before we have to begin our pre-champions league campaign in belarus or kazakhstan or whoever the hell we've drawn.

the evil part of me was glad to see that hose drogba pick up a card that eliminates him from their third game. it's what he deserves for being such a mingy prat.

and though i don't like robben's personality, that was a harsh yellow. he really was going a bit of a clip and there was contact. not a penalty and not a yellow, the gooner ref says.

i like that zakora and kolo's brother yaya. would not mind at all hearing that either was ashburton grove bound.

What about that Arouna Kone bloke. He looks a good player, despite the naff hairstyle.

Van der Vaart coming on for Snejder. Snejder never really contributed today. Van der Vaart's coming back from injury - it'll be interesting to see him today.

Van Horsey with a nice snapshot, saved by Tizie for once.

Could've easily been a penalty for handball on Cocu - lucky boy.

My boy Dindane coming on - he's a speed merchant; could make it interesting for van Bronkhorst -he hasn't had a good game.

Sorry, but that intentional handball by Van Persie should've been rewarded with a yellow card. There've been a couple of those that have gone unpunished in the tournament.

The Ivorians seem to have run out of gas somehow, and the subs haven't made much of a difference.

Boka picks up a yellow for a cynical clip on Van Persie who was on his bike.

Full-time: 2-1; This one petered out toward the end, with the Dutch happy with the win and the IC not able to rouse themselves for an equalizer. The Dutch then move on to an interesting encounter with the Argies next week, which will settle the issue of top spot, while the Ivory Coast follow the Serbs on a plane home. Shame for them; they were better than the early exit indicates.

true, you have to feel bad for 10 of the ivoirians including my boys manu and kolo. and zakora and yaya and keita and kalou and the kones will have been added to many manager's shopping lists, they were that good. but for drogba, it's exactly the ignomany that he deserves.

best player in africa he rates himself. he's having a laugh, the prat. sooner he pisses off to a league i don't watch, the better.

I entered La Press cafe in Montreal, and saw the whole crowd watching football match "Netherlands vs. Cote d'Ivoire". I ordered my cafe au lait and sat for a few minutes to watch the match. When Dutch hit the first ball, it was very obvious for others that I was excited, but nobody else...Then I noticed that all people in cafe were in favor of Cote d'Ivoire...so in next 5 minutes, when Dutch made the second goal, I had to be a little bit discreet about it ;)

Thanks for the comment, Cherolex. All footie fans have had that experience. Most of mine involved watching England in a variety of Boston-area Irish pubs - not recommended.

How's the WC been going down in Montreal?

it rocks all over the town. It is amazing to see people from all over the world with their flags, names of soccer players and screaming... It seems like WC is happening here in Montreal ;)
