Saturday's Alright for Fighting

Another Saturday has rolled around again and although the big match - Arsenal vs. Liverpool is tomorrow morning - there are plenty of matches of interest today. Those lucky people at Setanta have the goalless Newcastle game on now, while FSC will be broadcasting Everton vs. Villa at 10. Join me if you're round and about.

Citeh and Newcastle have played out a fairly uninspiring 0-0 draw that helps neither manager.

Leeds entertain newly promoted Colchester, who've started well and are challenging hard for a qualifying spot.

9:54 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

As usual the matches have kicked off and we're still looking at team sheets on FSC. Don't know why they do that - must be contractual.

Interesting that Everton are playing AJ up front alone with Cahill in the hole behind him. A bit negative for a home match - and what's happened to James Beattie?

10:11 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's also the First round of the FA Cup today, for those who care about how the likes of Kidderminster and Leatherhead will get on.

10:15 AM

Leeds start the day second bottom on thirteen points. We'll be hoping that Preston get something from Southend and that Wolves get something from Hull as well as closely watching the results at Barnsley, QPR and Palace.

Ten minutes gone already and there are no goals anywhere! A bit odd.

10:19 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

First goal of the afternoon - and Sheffield Wednesday have taken the lead against the Tractor Boys away.

10:25 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Derby have taken the lead as well against Coventry away.

10:25 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wigan's Ian McCulloch has driven another nail into Ian Dowie and Charlton's coffin with an early goal.

10:26 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

AJ is looking very lively and I'd like to see him get a run out against Holland - perhaps alongside Roon?

10:27 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bugger! Hull have dragged themselves up out of the drop zone with a goal against Wolves. Barnsley now drop into third bottom.

10:28 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's an open and end to end match at Goodison without many out and out chances or even shots on goal. The commentators are talking about windy conditions, but how windy can it be inside an enclosed stadium these days?

10:29 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Tim Cahill's already been down twice and now it looks as if the Aussie really is going to come off. He's been nobbled by his own teammate - Lee Carsley. It's a big blow for the Toffees. And here comes the elusive James Beattie off the bench.

10:31 AM

Coke leaders Cardiff have taken the lead against third placed Burnley. A good start for the Welshmen.

10:34 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Coventry are level again with Derby - 1-1.

10:36 AM

A nasty challenge from Angel gets him into the referee's book.

10:40 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Didier Drogba - who else? - has broken the deadlock for Chelski against lowly Watford. Is he the top scorer in the Premiership?

10:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Two quick goals have Leicester and Plymouth at 1-1.

10:44 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I've just checked the scorers stats. and Drogba has six Premiership goals, but Kanu - believe it or not - has seven!

10:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

YEEESSSS!! Robbie Blake has fired Leeds into the lead. We've now leapfrogged Barnsley into third bottom on sixteen points. It's Blake's third goal of the season, which I believe makes him our top scorer.

10:50 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Mixed results from our competitors. QPR have taken the lead but Palace have suffered a deficit.

10:54 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Meanwhile in the televised match, Chris Sutton has nodded Villa into the lead. This really is the battle of the wannabee England strikers with Sutton, Beattie and AJ on the pitch.

10:55 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice one. The Blades have gone one nil down to Bolton. That'll keep them rooted in the bottom three along with Watford, who've now gone two-nil down to Chelski.

10:57 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The other relegation favorite - Charlton - have gone two nil down to Wigan.

10:58 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That second Chelski goal was by Drogba again, btw. His seventh of the season. He's on fire!

10:59 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time whistles going around the country and Leeds is looking good, with QPR, Palace and Barnsley all down.

11:02 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Second halfs starting up again and I'm crossing everything to ensure my Leeds boys hang onto that lead against Colchester. Come on you Whites!!

11:16 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Everton continue their profligacy in the second half. AJ missed at least two sitters in the first and now Carsley has missed an open goal.

11:20 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wow!! Two quick goals from Cresswell and Blake have put us 3-0 up against Colchester. Our biggest lead of the year. Robbie Blake has certainly played himself into the side today. We're running riot!

11:22 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Dangerous omens here as Sheva taps in a third for Chelski. He's found his scoring touch finally and Chelski are starting to look more like the side that won back to back Championships. Still, it is Watford.

11:24 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Darren Bent has scored for bottom of the Prem. Charlton to bring them back to 2-1 with Wigan. He's scored six in the Premiership, which is astonishing for a crap side like them. Has anyone else scored for Charlton?

11:25 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bloody hell. QPR have scored two quick goals and have come back from the dead to lead Luton 3-2.

11:28 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Fulham have scored against the run of play through Zat Knight. Pompey are down.

11:30 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Norwich have scored against promotion contenders WBA.

11:31 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bolton are now 2-0 up against the Blades. They're rooted on 9 points alongside Newcastle and Watford. Newcastle must be gutted that they couldn't get anything from Citeh today, with all of their relegation rivals losing.

11:33 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Shame. Sunderland have taken the lead against Southhampton.

11:37 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Everton rolling the dice now - they started with one lone striker; now they've got three on the park!

11:40 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And Drogba has his hattrick against Watford! Chelski are 4-0 up.

11:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Rob Hulse has given the Blades a chance and suddenly they've equalized - two quick goals for Sheffield and they're back in it.

Andy Cole has come off the bench and equalized for Pompey against Fulham.

11:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good to see that Timmy Howard has been quite excellent today in the Everton goal. He couldn't have been faulted for the deft Sutton header and has kept his side in it against a steely Villa attack.

11:52 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Maccarone has scored for Boro against the Hammers. Sorry Trev.

11:55 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's all over now. Leeds have scored a memorable win. Chelski have laid down the gauntlet for ManYoo, who'll be up in a few minutes. I'm hopping in the shower and will be back shortly. Do join me, won't you?

7. Cristiano Ronaldo

16. Michael Carrick

Blogger United We Stand said...

COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!!

We always struggle at Ewood

12:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, you do. Are you nervous. Benni McCarthy's in a bit of form.

12:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What was the moment of silence for? I've got the sound off for KC's benefit.

12:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Very.
You're not wearing any United stuff are you?
If so, take it off

12:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Uh no, I had the lucky Leeds shirt on earlier and it seemed to do the trick. 3-0 - wallop!

12:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Jesus, look at the conditions. I remember those sleety rains that we had to play in. It's 80 degrees here today, btw.

12:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

So, what's Mike doing in the States? Just a visit?

12:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It doesn't work with non-league teams. I'm sorry... championship teams

12:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice move there from Skippy. Stay on yer feet laddie!

12:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ooh, Saha should've put that one on target. It was slightly behind him, but still. You'd have had that one, right Davey boy?

12:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Blackburn seem to be giving it a go - are you nervous?

12:43 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

They all look a bit like drowned rats at this point - shocking weather! Did I mention that it's 80 degrees here today? Might jump in the pool after this.

12:44 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half an hour gone in this one and very little to show for it apart from the sturm and drang and weather.

12:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Coming up on half-time and this one's been a snoozer. Killed off by the horrendous weather in the North of England today.

1:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time - 0-0; Roon missed a sitter there right before the half after a sharp shot from Saha was neatly saved by Friedel.

1:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Second half starting - O'Shea has come on for the Neviller.

1:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ooh, nearly there for Blackburn from a quick free kick. Rio was napping...

1:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am not a happy chappy at the moment

1:37 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I can't quite figure out what it is about Blackburn that frustrates you lot Davey. Granted they're not trying to play football and that's annoying. We get caught out by that. But unlike us at the moment, United seem always to have a plan b or c that cuts these huff-and-puff merchants up.

What gives with Blackburn?

1:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I have no idea!!!

1:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I HATE BRAD BLOODY FREIDEL

I HATE BRAD BLOODY FREIDEL

1:46 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

This is really the sort of game ManYoo have to win if they're to be champions - they're not playing on all cylinders but they need to nick a cheap goal.

Ooh, Rooney nearly there with a lovely move but an excellent stop from Friedel.

1:47 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great get by Giggs

1:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I think the Blackburn thing is that it's so close to Manchester that the Blackburn crowd and team get up for the game.

Oh, there it is. A good goal for Saha after some nice work on the right and a great knock down from Giggsy.

1:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yeah, good goal. There's that plan b I was talking about.

We really need to have that in our game against mugs of this ilk. You could easily picture us performing 90 minutes of arty-farty with no change-up in sight. I can't believe that Baptista guy can't recover. I really had hopes of him being an answer. I hear that he's 2-3 weeks away AND that he's managed to put on nearly a stone in weight during his injury lay-off. Typical Brazilian.

1:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

no no, please keep struggling scoring.

1:54 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

No Bob, it's something else. If United are away to other northern tryers like Wigan, Bolton, etc, they may struggle for a bit, but they always seem to have a change-up that works. Mind, they may have figured out Rovers now. But it's not mighty Eward Park. I don't think that's it.

1:55 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

As I said, this is the kind of game that champions win. Win a goal in the tank now, we'll see if they can gut out an ugly away win or if they'll let Blackburn back in.

1:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good stuff again from Saha. He looks like twice the player without Ruud around to boss him.

2:00 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Now that they're behind, Blackburn will have to start relying on their skilled players to get a goal-that's them screwed then.

2:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I hate to say this but I can't tell the two Blackburn strikers apart. They look exactly the same! What a nightmare for the commentators. I could've sworn that it was McCarthy going for that last cross but it turned out to be Nonda.

2:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

PHEW... the ref blows the whistle... offside!!

Do you think it is something to do with Sparky Hughes?

2:07 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sparky might get the boys up for ManYoo - yeah. A bit bobbly from Van der Sar there from a flukey shot. And now he's down for some inexplicable reason - I didn't see any contact there apart from getting smacked in the face by the ball a bit. There was no one from Blackburn even following up.

2:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I totally agree...

2:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Peter get a yellow for scything Skippy down. Should get a medal for that, in my book. I would have his leg off.

2:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ronaldo limping and then... SPRINTING!!!!

2:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

now he is limping again and is off

2:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Top of the lot by three.
See ya gentlemen.
Good games tomorrow, follow it on the blog

Full-time: 1-0 and Davey's breathing easier now, isn't he? Have fun with Mike, lad!
