Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Tamworth and Norwich has already started. I don't know why FSC isn't showing it. They are showing it at the Noon spot, while the Big One is playing.
We do have Forest/Charlton live at 3 and Cardiff/Spurs live tomorrow.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Shame, two goals at the end of the first half by Norwich.
Game over?

Dion Dublin scored for Norwich. can't believe he is still around.

Big News.

Hey Dave! I agree - best day of the football year. But do the big clubs still believe in the F.A. Cup? We'll see.

I reckon that they're showing the Tamworth vs. Norwich game at noon because the only game that'll be kicking off live at that time is the Liverpool vs. Arsenal, which Setanta will have gobbled up. Bloody Irish gangsters!

In any case, the Forest vs. Charlton game should be of interest. I'll be with you until you get knocked off the blog for your bad ManYoo karma.

8:54 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I wonder if Stef still follows the Canaries. It does get tempting when you live in this country for so long to just go with the crowd and start watching the American sports. All the talk around these parts this weekend is about the National Championship game between Ohio State and my beloved Gators tomorrow in Arizona. I'm sure very few are ken to the F.A. Cup.

8:55 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Tamworth have scored!!!

8:58 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What level are Tamworth on - Nationwide Conference?

9:00 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That's odd - FSC have started their usual half hour Premiership Preview show - the only problem is - THERE IS NO PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL ON TODAY! Clueless - bloody clueless.

9:02 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hey Bob,
I wonder if he still does follow the game.

I do follow US sports. I do like baseball, football and college basketball. I don't like the NBA.

9:05 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

They just showed the Arsenal vs. Charlton highlights from last weekend - there was a handshake between Arsene and Alan. About time they cut that nonsense out.

9:08 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Jose just referred to the holidays as "this disgraceful period." He must have not got what he wanted from Father Christmas! Seriously, though, a lot of whinging about the four games over the period. Still, these players don't play anything like the kind of schedule that the big sides used to in the 70s.

9:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Since Tamworth are being knocked out, there is only Aldershot, playing Blackpool, flying the flag for non-league football.
Come on Aldershot!!!

9:12 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

One more,

COME ON MACCLESFIELD!!!!

9:13 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Do you want a cup run or do you want to be out to concetrate on the league?

9:14 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I think we can do both. Now, are you asking this?

Relegation and F.A. Cup win? or Survival and knocked today? I'd say the former - we've only won the Cup once and we can always bounce back up.

How about you lot?

Fifth in the league and F.A. Cup or fourth in the league and knocked out tomorrow? I asked Gooner this earlier this season and he picked the latter.

9:17 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am proud of you for picking the FA Cup.
I want to win the League before the Cup but I would rather win the cup than my finishing position in the league(if we don't win)
I don't always think a cup run is bad for league play. It gets the confidence up and it helps you in the league.
Of course, in the '92 season, Man Utd knocked out Leeds in both cup competitions and Leeds went on to win the league!!!

9:21 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I really want United to open up Wembley
Que sera sera, whatever will be will be
We're going to Wembley

Norwich the first in the hat for the fourth round

9:24 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Curbs has dropped FIVE from Reading game
Tevez is starting up front.
ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!

9:27 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

By the way, I should mention that I'm trying a change of pace today - I'm wearing the shirt that Leeds wore when they last won the Cup - in 1972!

9:28 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Well done.
Of course, I can't see why you can do that.
I can't wear anything United, either can my kids, while United are playing!!!
I think my plan works much better than yours.
Top of the Prem vs. 23rd in the Coke.
Need I say more?

9:32 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Excellent! They've started a Cup preview show on FSC. With The Guvnor leading it off. Go on, Macclesfield!

9:32 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Do you think Chester can beat Ipswich? They have already been knocked out of the cup once this season. They were beaten by Bury but because of an unregistered player on the team, Bury have been kicked out.

9:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I saw this show earlier.
They show the West Ham wins in '75 and '80

I remember the '75 cup final well.
I remember thinking how could Fulham make the Cup Final and United hadn't made it in my lifetime!!!('63)
Of course, United make it the following three out of four finals.

Reading and Burnley may be called off

9:36 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I remember the day that Bury got disqualified there were loads of Bury fans calling 606 whinging about the decision.

9:38 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I cannot believe that Neil Warnock has rested eight starters for today's clash against Swansea - what a berk!

9:43 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Could not have said it better

9:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What about Chelski - here's their pathetic side to line up against Macclesfield today:

40. Henrique Hilario

14. Geremi

20. Paulo Ferreira

6. Ricardo Carvalho

3. Ashley Cole

24. Shaun Wright-Phillips

8. Frank Lampard

12. John Mikel

18. Wayne Bridge

21. Salomon Kalou

7. Andriy Shevchenko

And the subs are all people like Ben Sahar that I haven't heard of.

9:45 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I didn't think Lamps was going to play.

Let's hope Shef. Utd and Chelsea get knocked off.

I know United aren't going to play VanDS or Rooney

9:47 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It looks like Reading vs. Burnley is going ahead. Steve Coppell has made ten changes! That's risky - Burnley are a good side.

9:58 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Spoke too soon - Reading vs. Burnley is off!

10:01 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see the guy coming out of the tunnel for Charlton with his family jewels haning out!!!

10:03 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Here we go! Here we go! Here we go! Come on you Whites!

10:03 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Where the heck are the fans????

10:03 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Blackpool 1 Aldershot 0
Bye bye non-league

10:06 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree - shocking turn out. The City Ground still looks good - good enough for the Premiership probably. They'll be coming up to the Coke next season for sure.

10:06 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They have been on top all season but now have dropped outside the top two after losing to Oldham 5-0 on NYD

10:08 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Blackpool get a second.
Did I say bye bye Non League?

10:09 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, but I still fancy them to go up. They're just going through a bumpy patch. Are there no other non-leaguers left in the tournament? That's a shame.

10:10 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Doncaster 0 Bolton 1
Bugger, I thought Doncaster would beat them because of their new ground

10:10 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Kevin Davies for Bolton - he seems to fit into Big Sam's system well.

10:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

WBA have scored. Oh dear, change the shirt!!

10:11 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bloody hell - only six minutes in and the dream is fading. I'll change the shirt at half time if we're still down.

10:12 AM

Blackpool now 2-0 up over Aldershot. Could be a cricket score in the making.

Blogger United We Stand said...

wake me up before you Agogo

I'm not ignoring. You're just faster on the button than I am. It's that ManYoo competitiveness that gets you bumped on the blog, mate.

Shirt is still on. Are you asking me to take my shirt off, you naughty boy?

10:37 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Please take it and take a picture

10:38 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Oh my gosh
Macclesfield have scored!!!
YES

10:42 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Chelsea have scored again

Lamps again.

10:43 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why couldn't FSC play that one? Marvelous stuff. I can only imagine the scenes.

Two Premiership sides are in trouble - Newcastle and Charlton. Another two will be knocked out today - either Liverpool/Arsenal or Pompey/Wigan and another one tomorrow in ManYoo/Villa. Could open up some space for the smaller sides in the competition.

10:44 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Second half starting up again. Dave's been knocked off due to his ManYoo karma, but I'm here and would love to hear from the rest of you lazy lot.

11:04 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Birmingham are 1-0 up against Newcastle at St. Andrews but they'll be playing with ten men in the second half. Can the Magpies capitalize?

11:05 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Leeds are still trailing two nil at the Hawthorns. Time for the comeback, boys. Come on you Whites!

11:07 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Luton are back in front against QPR in the all-Coke match.

11:08 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I've just noticed that Newcastle equalized just before half time. Ooops. I can just imagine the scorn from United We Stand for that lapse of concentration. But where is he?

11:09 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Watford are now leading Stockport and Bolton are now 4-0 up against Doncaster. Looking better for the Premiership clubs now. Still, Charlton look hopeless and will almost certainly lose this one today.

11:11 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Poor old Macclesfield are down to ten men and are facing a penalty....

Lamps for his hat-trick....

And he makes no mistake - 3-1.

Macclesfield's skipper is in goal now.

11:14 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well done, Sir Trev. The Happy Hammers are one nil up against Brighton.

11:15 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes! Sheffield United are one down to Swansea. Lovely stuff. I'd love to see the Blades go out today.

11:17 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Southend are leading Barnsley in a bottom of the Coke fixture. Derby are now 2-0 up.

11:19 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

West Ham are cruising now. New boy Boa Morte has scored a second. Good signing, Sir Trev.

11:19 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Newcastle have got a second and look reasonably safe now against ten men Brum.

11:21 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Swansea are now 2-0 over the Blades - lovely jubbly!

11:24 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Andrew Cole has put Pompey in the lead over Wigan. So it looks as if Charlton, Sheffield United and Wigan are for the chop today. That makes sense - they're all in the lower reaches of the Premiership. Watford may survive because of a good draw.

11:27 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sheffield United 0 Swansea 3. I'll look forward to the Neil Warnock show after the match.

11:30 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

SWP has made it 4-1 for Chelski.

11:31 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Brian McBride has put Fulham 1-0 up over Leicester.

11:33 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Down to the last fifteen minutes - come on you Whites!

11:34 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Watford look safe against Stockport now - 3-1. And Mark Viduka has put Boro one up against Hull. Boy, we could use a Viduka goal right about now.

11:38 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

John Obi wan Kenobi has made it 5-1 for Chelski.

And Wigan have equalized - looks like they'll have to settle this in a replay.

11:46 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Leicester and Hull have both equalized against their Premiership competitors.

11:47 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Charlton have been shocking today. Absolutely no urgency to get back into this match. They've thrown in the towel.

11:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Kevin Phillips has made it WBA 3 Leeds 0 and another miserable day for Leeds fans. Should be some interesting chat on the 606 call in this afternoon.

11:49 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Chelski 6 Macclesfield 1 - not the Guvnor's finest afternoon.

11:51 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Kanu has won it for Pompey. Wigan will be concentrating on the league. And plucky Brum have equalized against Newcastle late on.

11:55 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Leicester vs. Fulham has ended up 2-2. What a ding dong!

11:56 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

So to sum up. Charlton , Wigan and Sheffield have gone down, while Newcastle and Fulham have been held to a draw. So three Prem. sides have gone out. And another to go out this afternoon.

11:59 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A late o.g. from WBA has given Leeds slim consolation - 3-1.

12:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well done the Hammers today - 3-0.

12:02 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

FA Cup holders Liverpool have kicked off against Arsenal. Here are the sides:

Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Riise, Pennant, Alonso, Gerrard, Luis Garcia, Kuyt, Crouch
Subs: Reina, Hyypia, Gonzalez, Aurelio, Bellamy

Arsenal: Almunia, Eboue, Toure, Senderos, Clichy, Hleb, Silva, Flamini, Rosicky, Henry, Van Persie
Subs: Poom, Julio Baptista, Djourou, Hoyte, Walcott

Referee: S Bennett (Kent)

12:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Looks like mostly Liverpool attack at present. Crouchie just missed a golden opportunity. Still 0-0.

12:51 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL! Hleb and Rosicky combine well and the Czech midfielder bangs it home to put the Arse one up.

1:07 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL! Rosicky again! Arsenal score just before half time and will be delighted to go in two up at Anfield.

1:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Second half starting....what can Pool do to get back into this match?

1:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL: Kuyt pegs one back after a great header from Crouchie. It's game on!

1:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ten minutes left - can Liverpool get the equalizer?

2:00 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL: Henry has settled it - 1-3 Arsenal. It's buh-bye to the FA Cup holders. Arsenal into the fourth round draw. What a comprehensive win - and at Anfield. Shocker!

2:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

This win must do wonders for Arsene's boys with the first leg of the Carling Cup coming up on Tuesday.

2:07 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Into extra time now and it looks as if the Arse are going for a fourth goal, with Theo on for Henry. Astonishing!

2:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time: Arsenal have beaten Liverpool at Anfield 3-1 and were pulling away at a canter at the end. This will be a result that resounds around the game in the coming weeks. It definitely looks as if Arsenal are rejuvenated with TH-14 back in the fold.

2:16 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Great result for us. The league seems out of reach, the CL likely not with Lyon and Inter as good as they do, so I'm happy to see us still in the hunt for a gong this year.

May I point out that this was done despite the absence of Fabregas?

Wahey!

4:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am back from watching United sneak through against Villa.
Larssen looked really good and scored on his debut 10 minutes into the second half.
Villa scored the equaliser but Ole scored in the 91st minute when his shot slipped underneath the keeper.
LOVELY JUBBLEY

11:26 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A close thing, Davey. The last thing that you wanted at this stage in the season was an energy-sapping replay at Villa Park in midweek. Congrats.

I'm watching Spurs vs. Cardiff now.

11:28 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I couldn't agree more.
We would have been sick of the sight of Villa if we had to play them again. We played them Christmas weekend, today and next Saturday.
I am watching Spurs as well.
Can you believe Blackburn are winning 3-0. All three scored in the first half.

11:31 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You really need to move up to Upstate NY.
I have a group of friends that get togehter for Footer and it would be a lot more enjoyable to watch it with you instead of just blogging.
We are just as football mad as each other.

11:35 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great commentary moment there. Tom Huddleston lines up a free kick and hits it well wide.

The commentator mentions that Huddleston had warned his teammates about the hostile atmosphere at Cardiff.....

(In the background you can clearly hear the Cardiff faithful chanting "What the fuck...what the fuck....what the fucking hell was that?")

Commentator: "As you can hear...."

You don't get that with American sports.

Thanks for the invitation. It'll much depend on the job situation. As you know, we're not entirely happy in Jax although it's been a comfy place for us to land after Japan. We're looking to make a move. Right now, we've got job applications out for colleges in places with two jobs. They are:

* Muncie, Indiana

* Kent, Ohio

* Richmond, Virginia

* Philly

* NYC

And we may not get anything this year. It's a bit premature for me to be applying for assistant prof. jobs now because I haven't yet got through my qualifying exams and there isn't a lot out there for KC this year. But we'll see.
