Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

New Year's Footie!

I missed out on the New Year's festivities yesterday, but fortunately there are a couple of good 'uns available this afternoon. First up is Arsene vs. Alan Part II - This Time it's Serious (aka Arsenal vs. Charlton). Then FSC is being kind enough to show Chelski vs. Villa live. Join me if you're able to loaf off today.

Guess who's back? Yes, TH-14 has made a speedy recovery and will line up alongside Robin van Persie in the Arsenal attack. This shows how desperate the Arse are to get three points today and keep up the pressure on the top dogs. A bit risky what with the FA Cup clash with Liverpool coming up.

I will with you guys in the second half.
COME ON YOU VILLAINS!!!
COME ON YOU ADDICKS!!!

sorry Steve

Hey ho, Davey! I'll be here and look forward to your comments in the second half. Cheers!

Arsenal and Charlton have kicked off at the Emirates. A win would have the Arse leapfrog Bolton - who were tonked by 'Pool yesterday - into fourth just behind Liverpool.

Here are the sides for the other game:

Aston Villa: Kiraly, Mellberg, Cahill, Ridgewell, Bouma, Gardner, McCann, Petrov, Davis, Agbonlahor, Angel.

Chelsea: Hilario, Ferreira, Boulahrouz, Carvalho, Ashley Cole, Essien, Makelele, Lampard, Wright-Phillips, Drogba, Kalou.

Referee: P Dowd (Staffordshire)

There's no way to deny it now. Chelski are kicking off with Sheva dropped to the bench. Jose had always claimed that he'd give Drogba and Sheva a chance to gel, but even his patience has worn out. Kalou has taken his place.

3:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oooh, Drogba should've had that. Lovely cross and an open net gaping at Didier. Fluffed the volley into the ground and over the bar. What a waste.

It's a good start to this match, with good chances at both ends.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Can anyone explain to me why Lampard gets so many deflected shots? Is it because he's quick to pull the trigger? Or are his shots attracted to defender's legs as if by a magnet?

Arsenal have taken the lead at the Emirates after Sankofa was sent off for a foul on Van Persie. TH-14 deposited the penalty - I'm sure it's a big relief to see the great man back on the score sheet for the Arsenal faithful.

3:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good move from Chelski finds Drogba wide for a change. His ball whipped into Kalou at the near post is expertly defended by Mellberg. Still very even match but Chelski seem to be going through the gears now.

3:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Kalou with a hilariously bad shot "successfully found Row N in the Holt End" according to the commentator. Great stuff.

3:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

If I haven't said it before, I really like the look of this Agbonlahor guy. I reckon that he, Tom Huddlestone and Anton Ferdinand will be at the heart of the England squad at some point.

Arsenal have gone in 2-0 at half-time after a second goal from Justin Hoyt after a ball from TH. Good return for the big man. And Alan Pardew must be sick of the sight of Arsene Wenger. No love for the Addicks today.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Villa are showing the kind of battling spirit today that they showed at the beginning of the season.

3:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am here.
How has this game been so far?

3:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Any argy bargy between Aresen and Alan

3:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Hey Dave! Good stuff from both sides in this game. I suppose the better chances for Chelski, but it would be unfair to Villa to be 1-0 down at this stage. Chelski still have a lot of firepower on the bench.

First card - McCann goes into the book.

3:49 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I haven't heard anything about Arsene and Alan. But Arsenal are 2-0 up and Charlton down to ten men so that game is well and truly over bar the shouting.

3:49 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time: 0-0. Villa should be happy. They are the "draw specialists."

Jose's hugging the fourth official for some reason. What a berk!

3:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Just looking at the highlights from yesterday. What a screamer from my old boy Jamie Milner! Lovely stuff.

3:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I couldn't agree with you more. What a berk! What a plonker!!
You know Chelski will win this something like two-nil.
Boy, I wish United won yesterday!!!

So Charlton are down to ten men?

3:59 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just looked up about the Charlton sending off.
I hate the idea of having a man sent off AND getting a penalty. One or the other but not both

4:00 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree. One or the other. 365 did say that it was a vicious challenge though. I'd only send off the player if Van Persie's leg were hanging off.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see that commercial of European Classics?
England vs Czechslovakia from 1990.
I will have to look it up and see if it IS a classic.
I got an England national team book of stats.
It has everything you want to know except if there is about 30 pages missing and then another 30 pages repeated.
Very strange. Kathy did buy it for me from Borders!!!

4:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you get my Man U sing-along? Great, wasn't it.

4:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

England vs. Czechs in 1990? Don't remember that one at all but it was during that time when there wasn't a lot of footie on the telly. I can't have been from the World Cup Final that year because we only played Ireland, Holland, Egypt, Belgium, Cameroon, Germany and Italy. Qualifier for Euro 92? I would have had to have been pretty early in the campaign that fall.

4:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just looked the game up.
Looks like a good game.
How much do you want to know about it?

4:11 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Don't think I got your sing-a-long. Did you send it via email? I'll check again. Btw, Aston Villa are "The Villans," whereas "The Villains" are....Manchester United!

4:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It was a Friendly in April of '90 pre World Cup

4:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What's the score of that match?

4:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Stick your corrections up your left nostril.
I sent it via email

4:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Am inserting them as we type. Arsenal are well on top at this point. Rosicky should've had a third there.

4:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bit of argy bargy - looks like McCann may go off for a second yellow here after some shenanigans with Carvalho. The Portuguese does like to get players sent off, eh? Phil Dowd wisely gives him a bollocking but no more.

How can a Friendly be considered a classic? That's absurd.

4:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Lucky to survive

4:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Did Steve Bull make the World Cup squad? I don't think he did. No Waddle in the side? He was a fixture in the WC, as was David Platt.

4:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Essien finds Row L!

4:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Villa need a change. Why can't Milan Baros get a game in this side? Not enough work rate for Martin's taste?

4:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oooh, the goalkeeper made a mess of that and Villa were lucky to get away with it.

4:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bull was in the squad.
He came on as a sub in all three group games replacing Linekar twice and Waddle once.
He also came on in the Belgium game
I don't remember him at all for England.
He was on Wolves. I wonder what division they were in?

Villa were lucky then

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, he was with Wolves for yonks while they were in the First Division. He was the top scorer in that league for some time. Sort of an Alan Shearer style center forward - very direct, good hard shot, decent in the air. Always had a very short hairstyle.

4:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

They were in Div. 2

4:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He was with them in the bottom three divisions

4:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He was another Kerry Dixon

4:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, whatever you want to call it.

Arsenal have gone three up. A second penalty, this time dispatched by Van Persie after a foul by Diawara on TH-14. No red card this time.

4:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you get my United ditty

4:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

COME ON VILLA, HOLD ON

4:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Villa are sitting back too much at the moment.
Come on and score

Not you Chelski

4:28 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, it came through. Lovely. Reminds me of the Nuremburg rally. Bunch of skinheads with arms raised. Typical ManYoo bullyboys.

4:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Here comes Sheva! Kalou has been useless today....again.

4:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Long may they both continue to be useless.

Let's have Drogba join them

4:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Who do Chelski have in the Cup this weekend?

4:30 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

McCann could get himself sent off soon.
He is flying in sometime.

Shot by Lampard is not the Lampard of the Everton game but the Lampard of Germany '06.
Long may that continue

4:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Macclesfield at home.
The Guvnor bringing his troops in

4:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The problem is that too many Chelski players are key to England. It's not very good for Lamps, Terry, Cashley and SWP to be so off form. And Joe Cole always injured.

4:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Villa haven't a clue in front of goal

4:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The line-up for FSC on Saturday:

10 a.m. Forest vs. Charlton

12 p.m. Tamworth vs. Norwich

Sunday:

11 a.m. Cardiff vs. Spurs

4:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I noticed that Incey is at Macclesfield. You think he'd fancy a job at Elland Road?

4:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Angel can't make a two foot pass without giving the ball away. HOPELESS

4:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh lovely, Cashley is getting himself into some bother. Yellow card for him.

4:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He has done so well there. They were so far behind and now he has taken them off the bottom.
Four straight wins over the festive period

4:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What about you lot? Let me guess - a tough draw against Tiddlesworth Athletic.

4:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Villa's passing has been shocking.

4:37 PM

We have Villa at home on Sunday

John Obi wan Kenobi warming up on the sidelines.

4:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United have played Villa a couple of weeks ago, then we have them in the cup and then we play them again in the league the following week

4:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why is that a bold move for Martin O'Neill? It's fairly obvious to put a striker on - they do want to win at home right?

4:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United Villa is on Sunday shown by the BBC. I don't know who would show it over here.

OOOOOH THAT WAS CLOSE. Why didn't it go in.

They need to stop treating Terry as a GOD.

4:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oooh, Ridgewell should've buried that one.

4:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Arsenal are four up

4:41 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ah to be in Blighty on Sunday watching Motty on the Beebs, eh? Bit of cider on the sideboard and a Cornish pasty. Lovely.

4:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just as Villa are coming into more, watch the Blues snatch one.

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, that must've been the last kick of the match. Van Persie with his second. Full-time Arsenal 4 Charlton 0. So much for Alan Pardew's effect at the valley.

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time 0-0. Dave's got to be happy about that. Chelski are now six points behind ManYoo. They really had plenty of chances to win it in the end with lamps and drogba missing total sitters there at the end. But it does tighten things nicely at the top.
