Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Yes (sigh) it really was that bad. I didn't notice that D O'B got any better, but perhaps I just got used to tuning the bugger out. Shep "Oh Baby!" Messing was the worst of an exceedingly bad lot. But I have to say, as long as ESPN/ABC picks up the rights, I'll be watching.

Oh come now, you've got to admit that the John Harkes/Adrian Healey pairing was miles ahead of the Dave O'B/'Cello pairing (to say nothing of the really horrible Shep Messing/Rob Stone pairing. The problem with the blanket condemnation is that it doesn't send the right message to ESPN - it suggests to them that we're just a load of whinging soccer nerds who aren't ever satisfied. Instead, I think we need to say, "Thanks for picking up the rights to Euro 2008, but here are a few things you need to do in order to improve your coverage:"

1) Choose a soccer guy as your lead commentator. Despite my reservations, I'd have to say that at present that's Derek Rae (with Harkesey as a color guy).

2) Don't talk down to the audience. They people watching aren't soccer mom novices - we're knowledgeable fans.

3) Speak truth to power. Currently Wynalda and Harkes are the only American pundits who have the balls to speak their minds. We need more of them.

I'd add Alexi Lalas to the point three. He may have gone a wee bit corporate now that he's a suit but he speaks his mind and he knows his stuff.
