Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Footie Trivia Question of the Week

There have been ten England players who have been sent off in international play. Name them and, if possible, the circumstances under which they were shown the red card. Also, one player has been sent off twice - name him and the games involved.

David Beckham- WC '98 backheeling Simione
Wayne Rooney- WC'06- stamping on Carvalho
Paul Scholes- WC qualifier at Wembley- first England player sent off at Wembley
Alan Smith- Croatia? - scything late tackle learned at Elland Road
Alan Mullery- ? - for punching someone

That's my lot

Didn't Scholes get sent off twice?

Nice effort, Dave. Mullery's was the first sending off for an England player, back at the time when it was still a scandalous incident, reserved for when a player did something really heinous. In Mullery's case, he punched a Yugoslav in 1968 during a Euro 68 match.

It shows you how much the game has changed that there were only four of them from 68 to 98 and then there are loads of them in the past eight years. Smithy's is a case in point. It may have been a scything tackle against Macedonia, but it was merely his second yellow rather than a straight red.

You may argue that Smithy learned it at Leeds but ManYoo players such as Rooney are well overrepresented in the list of shame. Scholes is one example but it's another United player who got sent off twice.

And you've forgotten my favorite England red card - think 1986 World Cup Finals - England vs. Mexico.

Try this quick quiz - I got 9 out of 10.

Ray Wilkins, another United player, sent off for throwing the ball at the ref.

That's the one - magic stuff. The ball didn't even hit the ref - it just sort of went in his direction (much like most of Butch's passes).

I wish I could find a clip of it. The look on Butch's face when he sees the red card come out is priceless.

Yep, I think the conclusion is that ManYoo players are filthy - Wilkins, Ince, Scholes, Smithy, Becks (twice!). That's the Old Trafford academy for you.

I guessed on the last question and missed it. I got the Sweden question because I remember paying $20 to watch that shite at an Irish pub in Boston. Worst $20 I've ever spent. Setanta - grrrr!

Right, here's the full black list:

1968: Alan Mullery
England 0 Yugoslavia 1
(Euro Championship finals)

1973: Alan Ball
Poland 2 England 0
(World Cup qualifier)

1977: Trevor Cherry
Argentina 1 England 1 (friendly)

1986: Ray Wilkins
England 0 Mexico 0
(World Cup finals)

1998: David Beckham
England 2 Argentina 2
(WC finals)

1998: Paul Ince
Sweden 2 England 1
(EC qualifier)

1999: Paul Scholes
England 0 Sweden 0
(EC qualifier)

1999: David Batty
Poland 0 England 0
(EC qualifier)

2002: Alan Smith
England 2 Macedonia 2
(EC qualifier)

2005: David Beckham
England 1 Austria 0
(WC qualifier)

2006: Wayne Rooney
England vs. Portugal
(WC Finals)

You'll notice that in only one of those matches did England get a win. Like penalties, losing a player to a dismissal seems to have a psychological effect on the Three Lions.
