Lakenheath Old Boys

Midweek Prem Madness

What a treat! I'm home early from Gville today, FSC is showing one of the Premiership "make-up" matches - Chelsea vs. Newcastle - and life is good. If any of you workaholics is loafing as well today, join me on the blog, eh? Cheers.

It's an experimental side for Jose today. Both Sheva and Drogba are rested after the ordeals of Sunday against Arsenal, so the champions will line-up in the 4-3-3 formation that brought them the past two Premiership titles, with Shaun Wright-Phillips and Arjen Robben supporting youngster Salomon Kalou up front. Claude Makelele therefore also drops out of the side that drew 1-1 with Arsenal at the weekend.

As for Arsenal, both Robin Van Persie and Cesc Fabregas drop to the bench for their match away to Wigan, and Phillipe Senderos is out of the squad completely. Kolo Toure returns from suspension, while Freddie Ljungberg and Julio Baptista both start.

Both Chelski and Arsenal will want full points today in order to increase the pressure on ManYoo. A win for Chelski would bridge the gap to five points, while a win for the Arse would put them in third again.

Chelski have missed two gilt-edged chances, with SWP and Kalou spurning.

Newcastle come into this match having won four straight. I don't rate Obafemi Martins at all, but I have to admit that he's been in good form lately. Can they do some damage to the champions today? Dave will certainly hope so.

Oooh, that was close for the Magpies, with Sibierski rattling a header off the bar.

It's also a night for a halfload of EUFA Cup matches, with Blackburn playing the delightfully named AS Nancy. Wonder if they like being called the "Nancy boys?"

Blogger United We Stand said...

I am home for the match until I get bumped off.
Just saw The Toon hit the bar!!!
Damn it, why didn't it go in?

3:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Heya Dave! I'm doing my "Don't Get Bumped Off" dance for you. Good to have you on board. It's been fairly even so far.

What is it with Newcastle and useless center backs. Last season it was Titus Bramble and Jean Alain Boumsong and this season its Steven Taylor and someone named Peter Ramadge? You'd think that "King Kev" were still in charge.

3:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I just looked at your comments about the line up. Strange how these managers seem to think that these three points aren't as important as others.
I am pleased that we got knocked out of the Carling Cup because we don't have a midweek game until the Champions League starts up again or when there is week of mid-week Prem games

3:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I just saw that Bramble was taking to the hospital because his calf had grown twice the size

3:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wouldn't matter, would it? He's hopeless!

3:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Newcastle have been decimated by injuries. I saw they may go for Steven Pressley the ex Hearts captain. I am suprised that only Sotton and the Toon are interested in the Scotland captain

3:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice move by the ex Leeds winger. Shame no one was at the back post

3:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Are you following the World Club Championship? They've been showing some matches on FSC.

3:19 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Haven't yet. Am I supposed? United got in trouble for going to that... by you!!!

3:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Is the Blackburn match the last of the group games?

3:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh yeah...I remember that. ManYoo scum - not respecting the tradition of the FA Cup.

3:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice shot by Rossi.
Come on do your REAL teammates a favor

3:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, it's the last round of matches today and tomorrow. Somehow Newcastle have already played their four. The top three in each group go through along with eight third place finishers from the Champions League. So, they have a "Round of 32" in March. Shame, they really should just have the top two in each group play and dump the CL losers out altogether.

3:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not caring about the FA CUP
WE HAVE WON THE BLOODY THING ELEVEN TIMES!!!

3:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Leeds..... ONCE

3:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why should Rossi do you lot a favor - you sent him out to the hinterlands on loan?

3:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

We were robbed in 1970 and again in 73. Bloody Sunderland crossbar!

3:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Everyone should do United a favor.

3:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Do you know that you are the only reason I feel bad for Leeds' predicament.
I hate Leeds and REALLY hate Wise!!!

3:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time - 0-0 in both Prem matches. You've got to be happy with that - don't you?

3:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Long may it continue

Curbs in at Upton Park.
Let's hope he doesn't work his magic on Sunday

3:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Have you seen those ads for the Fatheads? Gooner and I were thinking of sending you one of Drogba for your den - whaddayou reckon?

3:48 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Don't get me Drogba, it will probably keep falling over!!!

My brother-in-law got a Ronaldo one for Thomas and the United crest for the other two

3:50 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Uh oh, Drogba is on

3:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

By the way, they aren't called Fatheads(that is the NFL)
They are called Wallbangers
Get it right Dahlgren!!!

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

COME ON BUTT!!!!
You can shoot better than that

3:55 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry, sir. It won't happen again.

3:56 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I feel Chelski will win this 2-0
Drogba should have scored there

3:56 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That was a close call. Arsenal still nil-nil and Heskey might have scored for Wigan just there.

3:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Who's a more useless striker - Kalou or Martin?

4:01 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

a pick em

4:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

nice work from Rossi again.
Could have picked someone out with the cross

4:03 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What was Martins complaining about that header?
What a crappy pass back from him

4:05 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I thought the same thing - he really put Ramage under pressure. This isn't beach football after all.

4:06 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What was Jose doing there?

4:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Dunno. How can Chelski expect to win anything playing like this. They're completely moribund of ideas.

4:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Newcastle are holding their own here

4:08 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Long may it continue

again, 2-0 to Chels

4:08 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ooh, good save Given.

4:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Essien into the book - for what?

4:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great save by Given. If Bollocks got a toe nail on that it would have been a goal

4:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It was a foul but not a booking.
He must opened his trap

4:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

By the way, BOOK EM ALL

4:12 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Mighty ambitious there from Bollocks. He hasn't impressed again today. Jose is still playing four guys in the middle who trip over each other as Makalele and Lamps did just a minute ago.

4:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Again,
Long may it continue

4:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

N'Zogbia has medial knee ligament damage.

MORE INJURIES FOR THE TOON

4:14 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice cross, Arjen!

4:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Jose throws his last dice.
Let's hope for an injury now

4:16 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Here comes Sheva! As you say, "Long may it continue!"

4:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

20 minutes to go in both matches
Long may it continue

4:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

nice backpass Sheva

4:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, that was hopeless from Sheva. Herb Krebs would've done better. Don't you wish you could make £100,000 a week for that shite?

4:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

go forward with it Martins!!

4:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What a bizarre shot from Kalou! Was it a toe poke?

4:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Is that the young guy United got but refused to play for because he wanted to join Chelski.
YOU CAN HAVE HIM

4:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It has to be said that this is not the advertisement for Premiership football that FSC want - this is sub MLS quality. Good thing it's on on a Wednesday afternoon when everyone's at work.

4:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Chelski are going to pepper the goal for these last 15 minutes or so.
I am very nervous

4:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Martins can't beat anyone on the dribble.
Header chance for the Toon. Easy save

4:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

BLOODY HELL!!!!!

4:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sheva went for goal!!!
WHAT A LUCKY GOAL

4:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

You were right - there's the goal. And it's Drogba, of course. He's the only one for Chelski who looks able to score regularly. Sheva supporters will point again to the assist but Alan Smith is right for once that he was going for goal not for a pass to Drogs.

4:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Arse have thrown Robin Van Persie on for the last fifteen minutes looking for that elusive goal.

4:25 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

was never touched

4:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That's Chelski down to a four point deficit with you lot.

4:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry...make that five points.

4:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Blimey, does Drogba make the tea at half-time too. What would they do without him?

4:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I can't believe how many students I have this time complaining about their grades. What a bunch of whiners? Do you get that too? Sorry about the shop talk digression.

4:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Lamps is king of the deflected shots, isn't he?

Oy Dave, are you gone?.....

4:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Yes, I get complaints all the time about the grades. From 8th graders and the college folk

4:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Honestly! I can't remember ever complaining about a grade to a teacher or professor. I would've been too embarrassed.

4:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bugger. The Arse just scored

4:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Adebayor has just missed another sitter for the Arse. You've got to be happy about that.

4:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

88 bloody minutes.
This day was looking so good fifteen minutes ago

4:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

About time - Ade has finally scored! He's only had about fifteen chances today.

4:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Two goals and two wins for your challengers. Not a good day for Sir Alex.

4:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, good effort from Robben. But, doesn't he always look like a spoiled child who's ice cream cone has fallen on the ground when the ball doesn't go in. Grow up, Arjen!

4:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great save from Given
Come Toon, you have a chance to go forward and you go back

4:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And that was a toe poke from Sheva! What are they teaching these strikers at Stamford Bridge. It's the Joe Bloggs Academy of Center Forward Play!

4:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Lucas Neill has won it for Blackburn and they'll top their group. I don't know if that's any advantage in the next round draw.

4:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Newcastle stink going forward!!!
Not even an attempt on goal in the last minute and Terry with on boot on.
Butt has really fallen

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It's all over at Stamford Bridge. Three points for Chelski. It keeps the top of the table reasonably tight.

4:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bugger.
That's it at both games.
It all looked so good.
Great chatting with you Robert.
I guess your dancing worked. I made it all the way through.
Remember, I will be in NYC this weekend. Talk to you next week.

4:43 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Same here, Dave. Have fun on your dirty weekend, eh squire. Nudge nudge wink wink say....no....more. Talk to you soon.

4:44 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Arsenal back to third.

Chelsea squeaking by an unlucky Newcastle.

Blackburn avoid the sides dumped out of the CL with their group topping win.

Davey, maybe you should stick the remaining frame from Thomas's Ronaldo FATHEAD on your bedroom ceiling and use your imagination. Ah, bliss!
