Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Well, these things are always just for fun. Everyone's going to have their favorites, as if "Greatest Goals" lists and so on. But I think they've missed a few. Of course they're going for notable games, whereas I can remember some really thrilling Premiership matches such as the two Liverpool vs. Newcastle matches a few years back that ended 4-3, particularly the one where Heskey scored the winner.

As for notable games, the 1976 European Championship Final is right up their on my list. I can remember watching it in the basement of the hotel in Italy where our family used to spend every other summer. The 1970 England vs. Brazil has to be on the Top Ten too, merely for that one end-to-end sequence that culminated in the Banks "Greatest Save Ever" from Pele.

My personal favorite was the 6-1 thrashing that Leeds gave Southhampton in our 1974/5 championship season. Some reckon it was the first instance in which English footie fans started the "Ole" chants, as they'd heard Mexican fans do in the 1970 WC during a sequence in which Soton didn't touch the ball for about five minutes.

Oh, don't even start with the '99 Champions League Final. 88 minutes of sheer tedium followed by five minutes of loose marking by Bayern - hardly a classic.

Funny, you have mentioned quite a few of these matches they talked about. They did have Liverpoo/Newcastle 4-3 epic. They mentioned Leeds 7-0 thrashing of Southampton?
They made the same arguement about United's three minutes of ectasy!!! They all said it was not a good game.
Hungary's walloping of England at Wembley was a choice.
W. Germany France semi final was a choice. They had to cut a lot down.
Do listen to the show if you can.
Very interesting

7-0! Even better than I'd remembered. Hell of a side, that Revie team. What I wouldn't give to be able to see Johnny Giles and Hot Shot Lorimer play again.

All of these games are classics. My favorites would have to also include the 96' England v Scotland, the 02' USA v Portugal, and top of the list the 82' France v Germany that we all watched together at Coach Hunter's house.

I agree with the France/ W. G. game at the Hunters.
Good old Stan was furious about the GBH that occurred on the field.
Where did we watch the England France opener?
Where were we for the Brazil/Italy classic?

Did we even watch a game at the Dahlgrens?

We did watch several of those '82 matches at our house but none really stick in the memory as great games.

The France vs. England opener I definitely watched at your house since I can remember your being stuck in the bog when Captain Fantastic scored in the first minute.

We were at the Dosedel's new place in West Row for the Brazil vs. Italy classic. I seem to remember that I was the only one supporting Brazil on that day (part of a long history of my rooting for losing sides).

And the France vs. Germany semi was a classic. I too remember Barney going ballistic when Schumacher took out Batiston. Good times.

1982 - best World Cup ever? I think so.

I don't remember me being in the loo for the goal!!!!
I don't remember one at the Dahlgren's.
Of course, you got the locations for all the matches correctly. I remember you complaining that we were all rooting for the best team to be knocked out. You were right. The 1982 Brazil version was the second best team ever behind the '70 team. I think Brazil have been living on these two teams' reputations. They have never been the same but still get the hype!!!

Steve, you didn't mention the Liverpool Arsenal championship decider!! Did you not see it?

Yes David, you came running back in to the room from the loo. You watched Robbo's goal on replay.

No, I was here in the USA already and even you must remember what those dark ages were like. I got a phone call from my dad of course on the day, but there's no way to verbally describe the Thomas goal to give it justice. I'd say about two weeks later, the tape that Dad had made of the game came in the mail, but there was a sense of immediacy that I'll not be able to ever look back on. But is it one of 3 video clips that I carry on my Video iPod? Yes it is.

I don't remember Coach being upset about the Schumacher assault. Hard to imagine him being angry.

Best commentary line beyond Wolstonehome's "They think it's all over...it is now!"

Brian Moore during the Liverpool vs. Arsenal at Anfield '99:

"It's all up for grabs now...." as Michael Thomas was bearing down on goal. Like Gooner, I saw it after the fact.

Should also mention that the original "Fever Pitch" with Colin Firth as the Hornby stand-in has a brilliant bit about that goal. The rest of the film is patchy, but still worth checking out on Netflix.

I enjoyed "Fever Pitch"
I hated liking it because it had to do with the Arse.
He does go crazy on the floor.
They show the entire goal on the film. It starts with Lukic in goal getting the ball. In fact, my boys questioned why he could pick it up.
