Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

U.S. vs. Paraguay Live!

It's not quite must-win time for Sam's Army, but we'll be looking for some more sparkling play and goals from Eddie Johnson, probably our best hope tonight. The Paraguayans were sensational in their first match, so they'll be looking for a similar result tonight. Should be intriguing stuff. I'll be looking for your company.

Here's the U.S. team for tonight:

1. Keller
2. Bornstein
3. Conrad
4. Demerit
5. Wynne
6. Clark
7. Feilhaber
8. Mapp
9. Olsen
10. Johnson
11. Twellman

So it's the same side that started against Argentina. Let's hope for a similar performance if not a similar result.

Great to have Ray Hudson on board for this one again.

It's got to be a big night for Twellman, who was about the only disappointing player for us against the Argies.

Incredibly small ground here. It looks as if they're playing at Doncaster Rovers.

Apparently Drew Moor has been drafted in at the last minute here. Not sure who he's replaced in the back. Maybe Mapp?

Whoever it is, the backfour will have to shut down Roque Santa Cruz, who had a field day the other night.

Nice possession in the early going here.

Eddie Johnson looks up for it so far, with some nice early touches. He's holding the ball up well.

We got a bit lucky there with the offside call against Paraguay. Cardozo was definitely on there.

Ray Hudson is mentioning that Diego Maradona compared Eddie Johnson with Eusebio after the other night's game. He was good, but not THAT good.

Remember that we don't need a win tonight. A 0-0 draw would perhaps due.

Feilhaber is really the guy. He's shown me a lot in the past two weeks. Maybe the future of U.S. footie.

OOOOOHHH, what a miss from Sasha at the back post. It was a golden ball from Olsen and it only needed a touch.

And again a golden chance for the U.S. with Eddie stealing in between the back two; he couldn't get the final touch.

Poor play from Benni there, taking a real chance in the box. He needs to thump it.

And Ben Olsen looks to have crocked himself banging into the boards trying to track down an errant ball from Johnson.

Fortunately he's back up after dusting himself off.

Oh, that was too close for comfort. A header onto what looked like the post but might have been a clearance by Olsen.

Ach! Goal for Paraguay. The U.S. defense was totally split and Keller had very little chance against Barreto.

Some poor possession play in midfield from Benni Feilhaber there led to the goal. I think that Paraguay have found the guy's Achilles Heel, which is tracking back. He was far too casual there.

Paraguayan seem to be satisfied with that one goal advantage and have really dropped off. That might just let us in. We could really use a goal before half time.

GOAL! 1-1 Clark gets a terrific goal. A lovely ball in from Moor to Twellman who dinks a great pass out to Clark who rifles it in the near post. That's exactly what we needed.

Half-time: 1-1

Bugger! A suicidal breakdown in the defense and Cardozo is in for Paraguay's second. It was Jimmy Conrad with a hospital pass back to Keller and he had no chance.

Could be the killer blow.

Shame. Demerit is coming out after taking a knock to be replaced by Califf.

Ach, Twellman misses the kind of chance that he usually buries for the Revs. Brilliant knock down by EJ and he can't get over it.

Twenty minutes for the U.S. to salvage this one. They've had the chances to win this one. They need to kill off at least one chance.

Olsen coming out for Justin Mapp.

Another errant headed chance, this time by EJ who should have at least got that one on target and made the keeper work.

Nice stuff from Mapp, weaving into the area and then dishing off to EJ.

Mapp has completely changed the complexion of the U.S. attack. He was a bit greedy, though at the end of a great run. Should've dished off to EJ.

Great save by Keller to save the match. Close thing, there.

The commentators seem to be starting to prepare the audience for the U.S. going out of the competition, but they've still got fifteen minutes to save the day.

Too cute there by Benni.

Finally Kljestan is coming off. He's been hopeless - the U.S.'s worst player. And it's Nguyen coming on. He's a bit lightweight for my taste.

That's torn it. Cardozo converts a free kick for the Paraguayan's third goal.

It's still mathematically possible for them to get through to the next round but only with a big win against Colombia and some other positive results.

Gator B . . . sorry I missed the LOBBING . . . I was with my mate from Paraguay, watching the match . . . while the result is a disappointment, the quality of play was not . . . the Feilhaber (spelling?) is quality, pure quality . . . what's his story? . . . bringing on the teenager from Indiana was Ridiculous . . . it was a wave of the white flag . . . he probably has a lovely touch, but it was remincient of Freddy at 16 playing for DCU . . . I had Keller at fault on the first goal, he needs to come out and not stop . . . Ricardo Clark's strike was gorgeous. . . Ray Hudson did have one thing correct, the header to the keeper nearing the end of match was PATHETIC!!
