Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Alexi Hits Back!

Lalas is not going to stand for any more talking smack about the MLS. Read more HERE

I don't think a league that numbers Cristiano, Henry, and Essien, to say nothing of its native talent can be accurately described as an "inferior product," but props to Big Red for fighting back at those sniggering at the back.

I seem to remember that he had a similar dig at the Premiership during the World Cup coverage last summer.

Of course he doth protest too much. A more reasonable position is along the lines of, "hey, we're trying to build the game in this country. Would you rather that we didn't try?"

The comments out of Blighty about Beckham's "semi-retirement" in the U.S. do grate. You'd think that any savvy watcher of the game over there would say to themselves, "Hmm...ten years ago there was John Harkes; now there are a dozen Yanks playing over here." I mean, Fulham stayed up this year based on the American presence - sheesh!

Thanks for the post.

Bob,

I think that Lalas framed his argument the way he did because he knows what the English press's answer to that question would be. Hell yes, they'd prefer we didn't try.

If you read the Guardian as often as I do, you quickly realize that the likes of Simon Ingle, Barry Glendenning, Kevin McCarra, Paul Doyle, and Rob Smyth may be too-PC to call Germans, Krauts, and French, Frogs,
but they are only too happy to portray Americans as overweight, undereducated, gun loving, inane USA-USA-USA chanters.

FYI, Big Red will be the special guest on the World Soccer Daily radio program tomorrow talking specifically about the Gold Cup, Becks and especially his comments about the Premiership. I expect the sparks to fly.

Btw, Steven Cohen has been hooking up some great guests for the show recently to get through the summer doldrums. Today they'll be having that mad Geordie Ray Hudson, who played for two seconds for Newcastle and now does the breathless play by play on Goltv.

If you've got Sirius, you can listen live from 1 p.m EST or you can download the podcast from 3 p.m. onward. If you want to have a go at Lexi, I'd call in at 1 p.m. and be prepared to hold for roughly an hour.

I should specify that Ray Hudson is on today (that is Wednesday, June 20) and Lexi Lalas is on tomorrow (Thursday, June 21). Enjoy.
