Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Bloody Confused - Chapter 5

At the risk of beating a dead horse, let me comment quickly about Chapter 5 of Culpepper's opus. In this section, Culpepper describes the thinking that went into choosing his Premiership club to support. Of course, he's right to avoid the bandwagon option. If you didn't support ManYoo before 1999, there's really no excuse for latching onto them now. But Pompey? Why? The clear choice for a Yank abroad at that time was surely Fulham, with its gaggle of Americans and a relegation battle of its own to fight. Or perhaps Culpepper could have been truly intrepid and chosen a club in a lower division. Given his love for grimy stadium bathrooms, Scunthorpe or Crewe might have suited. What do the rest of you think?

That was exactly my thought when I read this chapter. Fulham was the obvious choice, and I could even reason with him on choosing Watford or Reading.

I've read ahead, and the choice of Pompey is bewildering, not only because in the next chapters, the reigning theme is him showing up to Fratton Park 15-30-45 minutes late because of the decline of British Rail. He could conceivably mini-cab it to Craven Cottage.

And don't get me started on his measure of an "authentic" club.

If you live in Portsmouth and you support Pompey, fair enough. But living in London and trying to rail it down and back to Pompey? Not what I define as clear thinking.

That does make it even less sensible. Culpepper does seem to do things on the fly. I've just read the section about his jumping on the train on a whim to see a Birmingham derby without a ticket!
