Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Gold Cup Update

I can't say that the Gold Cup tore me away from the holiday weekend festivities but I have been following the tournament through newspaper accounts and FSC re-runs. Thanks to Gooner, I caught the replay of the U.S.'s performance against Grenada where the youngsters ripped it up against frankly inferior opposition. So the tables look like this after round one of games:

Group A Played Points
El Salvador 1 3
Canada 1 3
Costa Rica 1 0
Jamaica 1 0

Group B
U.S. 1 3
Honduras 1 3
Haiti 1 0
Grenada 1 0

Group C
Mexico 1 3
Guadelupe 1 3
Panama 1 0
Nicaragua 1 0

Next up in the schedule of games is Jamaica vs. CR at 7 p.m. and El Salvador vs. Canada at 9 p.m. tomorrow night. The U.S. are up at 9 p.m. on Wednesday against Honduras.

I saw a few of these.

I caught most of El Salvador vs. Costa Rica and was again reminded of just how crappy our performance was in our WC2010 qualifier in CR. Virtually the same CR team that slaughtered us were made to look very ordinary by the Salvadorans. Take these mugs out of that plastic-pitch open-air urinal in Saprissa and they are not good. Period.

Didn't see Mexico but I watch all of the USA's game against the over-matched Grenadans. It was our B-squad, and in 45 minutes of the first half, we must have had 80% of the possession. Rogers looked dynamite, setting up two and sticking one away himself. I was just wondering what it was that Holden was supposed to be doing when he roared in at a set piece, rose and towered a header in. But the rest of the match, the guy was taking corners, many of which were begging for a repeat of his effort to head the ball in. Let the midget Rogers or Adu take the corners--let Holden free in the box to wreak havoc.

I also thought Chad Marshall looked very composed and did his chances for inclusion in the squad no harm.

Charlie Davies had a profligate night, but I'd recommend keeping with him to build up his confidence.

Against Grenada, Beckerman looked fine, but his passing in very ordinary and I think it would invite another complete gubbing if Bradley really imagined that he had quality enough for inclusion.

I caught highlights of the Guadeloupe game and they look dangerous on the attack but not so good in defense. Similarly, Haiti looked good going forward, but prone to errors at the back.

I've been watching the FSC coverage and hope to God that they're not thinking that Max Bretos is the new voice of commentary on the channel. He's just shockingly bad and just the thought that he's going to play any part in their CL coverage makes me cringe. He's a nightmare.

I agree with you on Bretos. He is a muppet. For some reason, UWS defends him. Incriminating photos somewhere, Davey?

That said, FSC has continually reported that they'll just take the CL feed direct. Bretos and co will be relegated to giving us inane banter before and after the match and during half-time much as the bow-crazy cretins on the Japanese WowWow channel used to torture me with during the last time Leeds were in the tournament.

Another decent clean sheet and 2-0 win by Bob Bradley's boys last night with goals from Ching and D.C. United favorite Santino Quaranta.
