Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Shocker: FIFA Considers France v. Ireland Replay!

Shock news out of FIFA that Sepp "50 Bad Ideas an Hour" Blatter has decided to hold a hearing on whether to schedule a replay between France and Ireland after the contentious playoff ended in a "mano a dios" TH-14 goal. When the Irish FA first floated the idea last week, I thought it was a laughably optimistic idea - but here we are? I think it sets a tremendously dangerous precedent for world football. Anyone care to talk me down on the issue?

This is a simple fix or consequences (depending on how you look at it).

1) Do not let the referee and two linemen officiate any other World Cup matches until next World Cup.

2) For the coming games: Allow each coach the opportunity to challenge a play/call (only one per game, regular game and overtime) through “instant replay” and they can only call it when the ball is “out of play” or their own team has possession of the ball (this way you can’t call it when your opponent has possession of the ball).

Its pretty lousy moving forward this way and since FIFA does not want to fix this injustice they might as well makes changes so this does not happen again (why not use the technology that we have to ensure this does not happen again).

Thanks for your post, Preston. I think you're right on point. I've been in favor of the two challenge/game idea for some time. There's no way that that would slow down the match significantly.

I agree with Preston too. It can only apply to deadball situations when the play has stopped anyway.

But really, shouldn't Mr. Hansson have consulted the assistant? How is it that everyone in the ground had a clear view of TH14 handling the ball except him? Now I have to suspend my belief further to believe that neither lino could see it either?

I understand that TH14 shook hands with Richard Dunne after the match ended. What great TV it would have been if Dunny had just chinned him spark out right then. Who wouldn't have watched that?
