Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

It was India. No doubt about it.
India is right. But was it for religious reasons-- most boots in the '50s must have been made of cattle leather, no?-- or was it simply a lack of time to get used to the touch of the ball through shoes? I've never known the reason.
Absolutely, correct, gents. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the issue:
"India qualified by default for the 1950 FIFA World Cup finals as a result of the withdrawal of all of their scheduled opponents. However, they did not take up their place in the competition. The Indian players were unable to play as boots were required according to FIFA legislation, and the Indian players were not used to footwear and thus refused. The Indian football team was known to play barefoot during the period. In fact, Mohammed Abdul Salim one of the Indian football players played for Celtic F.C. barefoot."
Crikey - can you imagine playing away to Dundee United in December without boots!?
Wow, what an interesting piece of trivia!
I missed it!
