Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
390 Comments:
Right then, I've got a link up through Atdhe right as match kicks off.
The teams for today:
Leeds: Kasper Schmeichel, Paul Connolly, Neill Collins, Richard Naylor, Federico Bessone, Sanchez Watt, Bradley Johnson, Jonathan Howson, Neil Kilkenny, Lloyd Sam, Luciano Becchio
Forest: # 1. Lee Camp, Chris Gunter, Wes Morgan, Kelvin Wilson, Ryan Bertrand, Paul Anderson, Paul McKenna, Radoslaw Majewski, Chris Cohen, Dexter Blackstock, Robert Earnshaw
And we're nearly one down within two minutes here, Big Kasper saving our bacon. We're under the cosh early doors.
Well, Lloyd Sam gave away a penalty last weekend and Federico Bessone nearly gave another away here. Ref waves on. Not a promising start.
A lot of the threat is coming through Paul Anderson down the right side.
Now we've got a free kick to weather. Bradley Johnson half clears. Still Forest press. Eeek!
Bugger! Chris Gunter crosses for Dexter Blackstock to nod home Forest's first goal. It was coming.
1-0 Forest!
Simon Grayson has radically revamped our back four in the summer, bringing in Collins, Bessone and Connolly. And in the first two matches that's been our Achilles' Heel. I wonder what he found lacking in our back four from last season. To be fair, Patrick Kisnorbo is injured, but where are Jason Crowe and Lubomir Michalik.
Oh - Earnshaw nearly doubles Forest's lead. Off the post. He totally skinned Bessone there.
First real attack for us through Lloyd Sam. That's better.
The Forest fans are singing "Championship - you're having a laugh" at us, and you really can't blame them. We don't look the part today. It's going to be a long, long season for us on this form.
We are weathering a slight injury crisis with Paynter, Snodgrass and Kisnorbo all unavailable today.
Majewski wins another free kick for Forest in a dangerous area.
Thankfully, Majewski puts it high, wide and 'orrible.
The commentator thinks that we'll be happy to get to the mid-way point of the first half without conceding more goals. I understand the sentiment but that's what David Pleat said about West Brom yesterday and looked what happened to them!
Oh - Becchio was played in there by Sam but a poor first touch took it too close to the Forest keeper. We do need to take our chances today.
I'll certainly take a draw.
Well, that helps. First yellow card for Majewski. Now he'll have to watch himself.
Good round or two of the old "MOT" from the Leeds supporters in the City Ground.
Peter Lorimer in the stands there. We could use a few hotshots from him today.
As it stands, we're rooted to the relegation spots, second bottom to Preston North End who were shellacked yesterday.
Half an hour in, and Forest have settled a bit. I still think we can get back into this one but Jonny Howson's going to need to stamp himself on the match.
Forest lost their opening match last weekend and were dumped out of the Carling Cup in mid-week, so I was hoping that their morale might be low. But they're taking their frustration out on us.
Paul Connolly is in danger of talking himself into the book after that foul. Lucky boy.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sanchez Watt scores his first goal for the club. Great move there. Lloyd Sam spread it wide to Jonny Howson who crossed for Sanchez Watt to nod home.
Actually, Lloyd Sam who started the move got a cheeky last touch to see it over the line, so he may claim it.
1-1 Game on!
The commentator is now saying that we're lucky to be level and that we could have been three or four down inside the first quarter of an hour. Shut it!
It's a great goal there and Sam's second in three games. He's our joint top scorer with Becchio now.
Some activity on the Forest bench. Billy Davies seems to be considering an early change.
Marching on together.....!
Into stoppage time in the first half now.
Half-time: 1-1
I'm actually rather pleased with that. We've weathered a lot in the opening period and then gradually clawed our way back into it. I'd definitely take a draw in this one.
That goal also takes us out of the drop zone and dumps the Blades into it alongside with Bristol City. Lovely.
I'm back with a fresh bagel at the start of the second half.
Forest get us underway in the second half.
Bradley Johnson wriggles free into space and tries a speculative left-footed drive. Well over.
Bessone tries to find his compatriot Becchio there. We've certainly started this second half with purpose.
Free kick chance now. Connolly knocks one into the danger zone but it's cleared out.
That's five minutes gone. We're defending from the front. Remember - I'll definitely take a 1-1 draw here.
And another free kick now wide left. Come on - let's take advantage of this!
Great ball in from Kilkenny but it's defended well.
Oh - a bit of magic from Lloyd Sam and it only needed a touch from Johnson at the back post for 1-2.
Morning Bob,
Got up in time to see Kilkenny booked. Looks even, so far, no?
Jesus, Sam whiffed on that cross. Sorry.
55 minutes in now. Forest seem to be picking up the pace again.
Hey Bob,
Sorry I wasn't here from the start. I forgot to set my alarm.
I have read all your comments and it sounds like 1-1 is a gift right now
Hello Davey.
Morning, mate! Great to have you on board. We were actually lucky to get out of that first half on level terms. Really under the cosh in the first fifteen minutes but Kasper Schmeichel has been looking like his dad for us. Scored through your boy Sanchez Watt linking up with Lloyd Sam. Somewhat against the run of play.
Morning, Dave! We should have got a free kick there through Becchio.
I'd like to see the back of Earnshaw. He's been a thorn in our side all match.
Morning Stevie
The first atdhe link keeps pausing. I am looking for another one
Good move there but the final ball from Johnson wasn't good enough. That's what we're missing with Snoddy injured.
I'm on the second link. The feed is a bit fuzzier but it's at least constant.
The second link is a different commentator but isn't pausing as much
Half an hour left. Hang in there lads!
www.saidfoot.com/Chaine_1.php
Cleary coming on to replace Anderson who was giving Connolly a torrid time in the first half.
That was never a foul!!!
Cheers, Gooner - that's a really good one.
Leeds should be in front, but the Forest defender sold the ref a foul and a dive when Johnson crossed it. Shame.
It's all getting really frantic now. I'd like to see someone like Howson put his foot on the ball. Only 25 minutes left.
Come on ewe blues!
A bit of magic there from Sanchez Watt but he slipped at the end.
Oh Sanchez!
A bit of handbags between Sam and Bertrand there. Some cards to come.
bah bah bah
Majewski coming off. Nathan Tyson on for him.
Has Capser had to make any decent saves?
Oh - the free kick came into the danger area and Becchio had a real chance to score there.
Becchio's header was going in.
Yeah - Kasper kept us in it in the first fifteen minutes with two excellent saves and Earnshaw hit the post as well.
Good spell by United (the other one)
ooh, just wide!
So close for Watt!!!
Oh - Watt just wide there.
He should have put that one in
Really good momentum for us here. Grayson obviously put something extra in the half time cuppa.
The Forest keeper Lee Camp was caught by Neill Collins there. He's going to need some stitching up. Time to refill my coffee cup.
Great cross by Johnson for Leeds goal
Yeah - good finish from Sam as well. He's been the best new face so far this season.
I wonder who Psycho is watching today?
Could Casper play for England. Surely he was born in this country while his Dad was OT?
Of course, I am happy with Hart
That's my thought too. We could certainly do a lot worse. Did you see that display from Kirkland in the Wigan goal? And that after watching Green and Carson flap about. It's a bloody disgrace.
Twice the commentator has said Leeds are the more likely winner
They're going up, They're going up, They're going, Leeds are going up
Forest seem to have lost the plot altogether and have resorted to fouling. Some good free kick oppos here.
I'll say it again - I'm happy with a point here. Forest are a good side.
Well, he was actually born in Copehagen in '86
Lots of noise now, and I think most of it is coming from the away support.
When did Peter join United?
More handbags between the two sides again. I didn't see the incident.
What has happened there!!
Did some Leeds guy tell the keeper he looked like a silly bugger with his bandage on!
Referee consulting the linesman.
I think it was in '91
Gunter and Watt seem to be the two involved. Yellows all round.
On the replay it was Gunter who stamped on Watt. I don't see that Watt did wrong besides complaining about having his foot stamped on!
Two yellows.... the Forest man stamped on the guy's foot...The Forest guy should be banned after video evidence
Inside the last ten minutes but loads of extra time to come from the injury to Camp and this bollocks.
So if Kasper has been in England since he was six or so, could he qualify to play for England?
Don't know what the rule is. Of course, his dad went to Portugal in '99
The Forest goalscorer Blackstock coming off and Lucy coming on. It's a defensive move so clearly Billy Davies is worried about us pinching this one.
I don't know if you can blame the linesman on this end of the field. He was on the opposite side of the field and a whole lot of players between him and the incident
I don't either. There are surely some other keepers playing in the Championship that might get a look-in if the plodders in the Premiership are ruled out. After yesterday, I'd say that Joe Hart is the only one I'd have in the squad. Robbo has retired, I wouldn't have Green or Carson back in. Same with Kirkland. Who else is English in the Prem?
Now we'll see the character of the side. If we can weather the last onslaughts from the home side.
Oh - Howson nearly found Watt in space there.
Lost my atdhe link. I am on to Steve's link
I missed it.. what did they say Watt did?
There should be about ten minutes of extra time if they're really counting but I never see more than 5 minutes added.
Oh - Sam drove it in and appealed a penalty. I don't think so. Bertrand did well.
Larry makes his first change.
Citeh loanee Adam Clayton (isn't that the U2 bassist?) on.
'home onslaught'?
It has been all Leeds
Well - I assume that Forest will pour it on in the last five minutes or so.
Six added minutes
Watt is innocent.
See what I told you. There was definitely more than six minutes lost from the injury to Camp and the handbags between Watt and Gunter.
I agree, Gooner.
Dear oh dear. Clayton was knocked off the ball far too easily. We can't have that in the closing minutes. Hold tight, lads!
They guy said Gradel will end his 4 game ban today.
Why?
Last week's game, the Cup game and this is three
Naylor is a lucky boy there.
That was lucky that the Forest player didn't go down
You'd look good in that blue shirt Bob.... wouldn't it be nice if your brother bought you one???
I'm not sure. I don't know why the Carling Cup match would count either. He should have two more to come. Silly boy - that was a ridiculous red card against Bristol Rovers.
Never offside!!!
What I have seen in this half... Leeds belong!
I'd love one of those blue ones. I've got my eye on a polo that's that color.
I think the cup game does count because it is the League Cup but that is still on three
By the way, Kasper has been capped for Denmark at U19, U20, and U21 level. With the U21 WC coming up in 2012, it's unlikely that he'll change course and choose England at senior level.
We've been good this half but we were like scared kittens in the first half.
Blow up, ref!
That's where big brothers come in
Thanks for the info, Gooner. That's a shame. We could really use some cover at the goalkeeping position.
That's it
Congrats Bob... well deserved from what I saw
Full-time: 1-1
Very happy with that result. It gives us a valuable away point and leaves us just below mid-table in 16th. Happy with that.
Forest and Leeds are in 16th and 17th place respectively
Now then - we've got the small matter of an opening match at Anfield against Arsenal to come. Just time for me to jump in the shower.
So, is Steve going to take Eric's laptop and join in??
Did you watch the U21s versus Uzbek? That boy at Watford looked the part.
And Manuel Almunia still hasn't made an appearance for Spain!
Re: Robert Green, what did you imagine would happen when Fabio threw him under a bus this summer. I agree that Hart looks like a Number 1 right now, but if he chucks it in his own net or drops a clanger, where will England be? Fabio has made a big mistake that really makes England vulnerable for as far into the future as is possible to see.
I agree with that, Gooner. But England keepers just can't drop one in the net in big matches like that. I was a catastrophic mistake. Can you remember any of the biggies - Banks, Shilts, Seaman - doing that in their prime? I can't.
Here are the line-ups for the big one:
Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Carragher, Agger, Kuyt, Mascherano, Cole, Gerrard, Jovanovic, Ngog.
Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Cliche, Eboue, Diaby, Wilshire, Nasri, Chamakh, Arshavin.
Why no RVP - is he injured?
No place for RVP and Cesc!!
I've just read in the New York Times that Rooney is moving to the Seattle Sounders!....
John Rooney, Wayne's younger brother that is. Know anything about him?
Good morning everyone. I missed the match because I slept in late. I did notice that Leeds drew at the City Ground. That is a creditable result on the road against a promotion candidate.
Just looked at another table and it says Leeds are in 16th and Forest are in 19th
You were right Bob
Morning MUR
Don't know much about little Rooney.... just a lower league player
I still have the link that Steve sent for the Leeds match and they have the clubs in the tunnel
Of course, now it has frozen
Morning, MUR! Thanks for the congratulations. I'm feeling quite good about that earlier result. Now I can settle back and enjoy the big clash at Anfield (and tomorrow's United v. Newcastle).
FSC are wrapping up their replay of yesterday's Chelski v. Wigan match.
I wish FSC would have them come out of the tunnel. They could learn some from ESPN
John Rooney currently plays for Macclesfield and is on trial with the Sounders. He has made 41 league appearances and has scored three league goals. He is twenty years old and is Wayne Rooney's brother.
I think Arsenal are going to be more of a rival for United than Liverpool but I still want Arsenal to Liverpool over!!
Arsenal look like a bunch of bananas!!
Kick-off time on FSC - only two minutes behind.
Of course FSC are behind!
BBC has them already kicked off!
We're off on telly finally
Liverpool won the toss
Attacking the Kop in the second half
What do you mean by "I still want Arsenal to Liverpool over." Have you just coined a new verb, Dave?
Liverpool must have borrowed the double-headed coin from Fergie then.
Arsenal's away kit does look horrible.
Cesc apparently has a chest infection... or he is going to Barca!!
As Alan Hansen would put it, "You win nought with kids."
More like he had a dodgy garlic shrimp in a tapas bar.
What a strike!
Nice save
Sorry for my lack of typing skills... DO THEM OVER
Reina saves well from Vermaalen's long range left footed rocket off the free kick.
Since Rafa left I miss saying Costa...
Jack Wilshere seeing a lot of the ball early on.
How much longer will Almunia start in goal for the Gunners or is it the Bananas?
Do you think this is too early for the big boys to meet?
I disagree with the color guy there. I think that the Kop is a bit more discerning than just "look like you're trying."
Ivanovic pleases the fans with his skill and persistence on his debut. Kuyyt's cross is straight to Almunia.
Is Wilshire going to stay in London this season?
Arse Shaven has scored 5 in two games at Anfield! That happens when the Reds let you score in one game
I dunno. I like it. But I suppose that it does mean that the result doesn't mean that much. Of course a win for either side would lead to a lot of media hype.
Arshavin makes a great run, but Chamakh is offside.
Liverpool's season could be over if they lose this and then TWO trips to Manchester!
I would love that.
I didn't notice that Liverpool started with Arsenal and Citeh!
They get a break with West Brom at home and Birmingham away before a trip to OT
What, you're saying a club can't get into the top four slots if they lose three matches? That's a bit harsh.
That is, I don't Liverpool are realistic championship contenders. They're realistic goal is to get back into the Champions League for 2011/12 and rebuild the side a bit.
They would be in a big whole and it would take a lot to get out of!
It would practically end their title hopes because I don't see them going on an unbeaten run.Fourth place is a possibility.
Ngog is a mile offside.
The announcer mentioned that Brad Jones was signed by one of the two teams in this match. Does anyone know which team?
I love Liverpool not winning the league! It will be 21 and counting... we took so much garbage for going 26 years... come on Liverpool, match us!
This feels like a 0-0 draw already.
I thought he said that there was interest by Liverpool
I sense a goal or two in the second half. I think the teams are warming up since it is the opening weekend of the season.
Nasri is running gingerly after that clash with Mascherano.
I hope you're right, MUR!
all a bit scrappy
Crikey - I dozed off for a moment or two there.
Stevie G. might pick up a yellow for that one on Eboue.
Gerard fouls Eboue just outside the penalty area. This is the second time that Eboue has made a meal out of a challenge. GET ON WITH IT!!!
Free kick from Nasri straight into the wall and then Vermaelen slashes it wide.
Nasri shoots straight into the wall, then Vermaaalen is well wide with a useless shot.
Eboue now being roundly booed by the Kop faithful.
By UK standards it is a balmy 70 degrees in Liverpool. Would that have anything to do with the slow pace of this match?
That was a bizarre clearance by Ngog. Vermaalen is off target from the resulting corner.
Liverpool just giving up a few too many free kicks inside their half now. Johnson was at fault there....
What do you make of the Arsenal tactic of playing short free kicks, UWS?
That was a pathetic attempt by Chamakh for a penalty. The bearded Masch concedes a cheap free kick.
And another free kick to the Arse now...surely someone will hit this one toward goal as Trevor Francis would suggest.
Not much better from Nasri. Where's the quality, UWS?
This is resembling one of those torturous World Cup matches.
Hate it... worse that short corners!
DId you guys see that goal from Wolves yesterday?
That guy was a United youngster. He just flicked it up himself and volleyed it over the wall!
I think UWS has fallen asleep as well. Not much from him in the past ten minutes. Either that or he's tucking into some of Kathy's famous coffee cake. Yum!
That cross from Agger looked like something from South Africa.
You're back! I didn't catch that one. I was hoping to get the whole MOTD but the berk who was running the site switched over to the Red Bulls.
