Carling Cup First Round Live!
Whew! We're barely into the beginning of the Football League season and suddenly we've already been flung into the hurly burly of the Carling Cup. Pompey pulled off a smash and grab at Stevenage yesterday to get us started. Of course my eyes are all on Elland Road where I'm hoping that we can get our season back on track with a nice, easy win against Lincoln City this afternoon. Join me from 2:45 pm EST for all the action.

The Sky TV coverage of this afternoon's festivities has started. I'm on this stream of the "Gillette Soccer Special:"
http://www.makeitlive.tv/player/player.php?chname=bstv070810&h=450&w=530
England U-21 vs Uzbekistan U-21 is on FSC at the same time. U.S. vs Brazil is on at 8 EDT On ESPN 2.
Good afternoon BD. The Under 21 match has started. Are you at work?
Despite the drama of the Carling Cup to come this afternoon, all the talk of the papers is about Aston Villa. As Someone Said mentioned in yesterday's thread, Martin O'Neill sensationally resigned as manager yesterday, which leaves a lot of speculation open about the successor. So far the short list consists of Sparky Hughes and Sven. Any thoughts, chaps?
England have applied all the early pressure as expected. The keeper easily gathers the cross.
I am surprised. That is a complete shock. I don't think Sven or Hughes would be as successful.I am not sure who would replace O'Neill.
Afternoon, MUR. I am at work but I've carved out a couple of hours with the office door closed to follow the matches.
Btw, are you on Skype? If so, you can track me down at my email address at work: Robert.Dahlgren@fredonia.edu.
I'm not sure that I'll be able to follow the Carling and the U-21 match so keep updating the match, eh?
Cleverley was really fouled by an Uzbek defender. That was really physical for a friendly. Corner to England.
I will definitely update. A short corner nearly results in an OG by an Uzbek defender.
Daniel Sturridge nearly chipped the keeper from 40 yards out. The shot was inches over.
To answer your question, I do not have skype, but my wife has talked about us getting skype in the near future.
The Sky panel are being a bit ridiculous making predictions about the Championship based on one match.
I agree. You cannot predict a season based on match. Otherwise, Norwich would be in League 2 this season.
Skype is great, particularly if you have people that you call outside the country. I Skype my folks every Sunday morning. It's completely free and easy to set up. If you've got a computer with an internal microphone, there's no need for any other equipment. If you've got a camera, you can also use the video streaming function.
Just register at: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home
England have had all the possession. There have not been any chances since the Sturridge effort.
Indeed - Norwich were absolutely slaughtered on day one of last season.
How was your trip back to Texas? Smooth, I hope.
Kick off time!!!!
Victor Moses crosses. The keeper fumbles, but the Uzbeks clear.
The Leeds line-up for tonight's match against Lincoln City:
# 1. Kasper Schmeichel
# 2. Paul Connolly
# 4. Alex Bruce
# 5. Neill Collins
# 21. Federico Bessone
# 14. Jonathan Howson
# 8. Neil Kilkenny
# 16. Bradley Johnson
# 18. Sanchez Watt
# 10. Luciano Becchio
# 11. Lloyd Sam
I had a good trip back. The humidity was a real shock when I arrived back. I was really exhausted, but everyone was really pleased to see me. How was your trip back?
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jonny Howson rockets one into the top corner after a cross from Lloyd Sam!
1-0!
That is almost identical to the lineup against Derby County on Saturday.
Really good. I stopped in with Dave Sunday afternoon. I was really exhausted too. He and his son Tom were going to tour the Cortland campus on Monday so we went in a convoy across the state. I shared all the good times with him. He was green with envy that he hadn't gone. I must have slept ten hours last night. Wow!
What a start!!! That goal must have been scored in the first minute.I am not sure about the U21 lineups. Jack Rodwell is the skipper.
It is, with the exception of Richard Naylor at center back. I don't know why Grayson has decided to change the backfour so radically.
It was in the first minute.
Bristol City are 0-1 up away to Southend.
Phil Jones nearly scores for England, but his shot is headed off the line.
By the way, Dave found a great website the other day that has extended highlights of just about all the matches from England. It's called "Soccer Over There."
They also update the activities of US born players. Good stuff.
YESSSS!!!!!
Becchio adds a second goal, his second of the season.
2-0!
We need to have some sort of reunion in the near future. It would have been awesome to have seen Dave.I wish nothing but the best for him and his family.
Hey Bob
I just came in from outside. You tried to skype me?
I found a Gillette Soccer Special on atdhe
Leeds take a two nil lead
Becchio!!
WOW!!! What a start for Leeds! Lincoln could be in for a thrashing.
Hi everyone else
Good afternoon UWS. I am watching England U 21 vs Uzbekistan U 21 on FSC.
It is still 0-0 in the Under 21 match.
Hi there UWS - welcome!
I did try to Skype you but you had buggered off, probably to take the dog on a walk, eh?
An Uzbek receives a yellow card for persistent fouling as it is still 0-0 at Ashton Gate.
England win a corner after great passing between Cleverly and Kyle Walker.
Not a good start to the season for the Canaries - they lost at the weekend and they're already 0-1 down to Gillingham at Carrow Road.
Championship favorites Boro are 0-1 up away to Chesterfield.
I'll tell you what - if Fergie has no use for Cleverly, I'd have a bit of that at Elland Road.
England have been parked in the Uzbek penalty area the past five minutes, but can't score.
Lots of upsets in the making here.
Macclesfield are 0-1 up at Leicester.
And Dagenham and Redbridge are 0-1 up at the Dons.
Another ten minutes have gone by at Leeds and we haven't scored a third goal. I'm disappointed.
Frank Fielding is playing in goal for the England under 21s. He is on Blackburn, but has never played for the first team. Cap named him in the squad for England's next friendly due to Robinson's retirement from national football.
Nearly 1-0 to England as the Uzbek keeper blocks Rodwell's shot. Kyle Walker has been hacked two conscutive times.
Northhampton are now 2-0 up to Brighton. Oxford are leading Bristol Rovers.
Danny Rose produces another reflex save from the keeper after a great save from Victor Moses.
Were you surprised by Robinson and Brown's decisions to retire after being picked.
Sanchez Watt nearly adds a third goal for us against Lincoln.
Corner to England as Cleverly's free kick is headed clear.
Oxford are now 2-0 up! Bristol Rovers lost 3-0 at the weekend and they're getting tonked again tonight.
Oxford 2 Bristol Rovers 1 now.
I was not surprised, but I think the timing showed a lack of professionalism. They could have retired before the squad was picked, so that two other players could have been picked.
Is it still 2-0 at Elland Road? Still 0-0 at Ashton Gate.
I agree with you. It makes Capello look really amateurish, as if he doesn't keep up with his players.
A great free kick by Cleverly , but nobody is there to head it in as three players miss the ball.
Still 2-0 at Elland Road, some half hour into proceedings now. I have a feeling that Grayson might rest a few if we're 3 or 4 up at the half. We have Forest away at the weekend.
Another chance for England as the keeper saves well from Sturridge.
Norwich have drawn level through Grant Holt on half hour.
Charlton are 0-2 up now to Shrewsbury.
There is about two minutes before halftime.
Oxford have scored a third against Bristol Rovers. 3-1 there - what a ding dong!
Will you be around for the US v. Brazil match tonight?
A great run by Victor Moses, but there is not a player to get on the end of his pass. One minute of stoppage time remaining.
3-0 Leeds!!!!!!!!!!!
Ian Dowie thinks it was our Arsenal loanee Sanchez Watt who scored his first for us at the back stick after a cross from Paul Connelly.
I will definitely be available.
4-1 Oxford United!
Excellent!
Well, apparently Ian Dowie was wrong. New boy Lloyd Sam who gave away the penalty that led us to lose has made up for it with a goal today. He's got our third.
I am back
Three nil... well done!
As for tonight, I may have to watch it behind the times! Tom is having some people over to watch the match and they may not be over before kick off
Is the England match on FSC from Ashton Gate? I didn't see the B of BCFC on the stand that England were attacking
Norwich 2-1 up
Norwich are back! 2-1 now with Chris Martin adding a second.
Halftime and 0-0 at Ashton Gate after a combination of great keeping and thuggish defending by the Uzbeks.
The England match is on FSC. It is halftime.
Boro are now 2-0 up!
Notts Forest are 1-0 up after losing at the weekend. They're next up for us.
The match is apparently at Ashton Gate.
I want a fourth goal - I'm being greedy.
Leicester have equalized. 1-1 at the Walker. Fancy a crisp, Dave?
I'd love a lovely bag of Walkers
QPR are losing 2-0 at home!!
Where's the B in the stands!!!
Shrewsbury 2 Charlton 3
I just read that young keepers Frank Fielding and Scott Loach will be in the England squad for next week's friendly. Trappatoni is in the hospital after apparent food poisoning. Aston Villa's director accuses Martin O'Neill of being bigger than the club. There was a disagreement over transfer policy.
Mystery solved!!!
There is a black tarp over the letter B
I think O'Neill thinks too highly of himself. I used to want him at OT but not any more.
As for the Villa job, none of you have mentioned Bob Bradley. He is one of the favorites
GET SKYPE!!! IT DOESN'T HURT!!! IT IS FREE!!!
I always thought that Martin O'Neill might be next up at Old Trafford. I wonder what happened there? Transfer policy sounds like an excuse.
I don't want Bob Bradley to leave the US job.
He has said that he would like to go to Europe.
I don't think he was treated to well after the WC
Watford are 0-2 up to Aldershot at half time.
Welbeck on for England
Coventry losing
The second half kicks off. Danny Wellbeck and two others are on as England make three changes.
Leeds wallopers, Derby, are losing to Crewe
I would be surprised to see Bob Bradley at Villa Park.
Crewe have taken the lead against Derby. There are at least six upsets in the making tonight.
I'm not sure that Derby "walloped" us, UWS. It was only 1-2.
UWS, free is good. I need to stop procrastinating.
Bob, you're the one that used that word when you were watching the highlights on my computer!
MUR... do it now!!
I am on it.
Danny Rose goes past defenders, but can't find anyone on the penalty area.
The scores are choking up the SS presenter
That should have been 1-0 as Sturridge fails to control a cross in the six yard box.
More desperate defending from the Uzbeks.
Chelsea's Sturridge is playing for the U21... he was very dangerous when he came on at Wembley
Fabio is actually in the stands!!!
Another yellow for the Uzbeks as Danny Rose is cynically fouled.
Must've been some other bald geezer who was talking about us being "walloped."
Saturday's early match
Spurs v Citeh
I'm already drooling over the weekend's matches. Spurs v. Citeh as the early morning match. Then the usual 10 am matches. And then Forest v. Leeds early Sunday followed by Arsenal v. Liverpool.
I'm clearing my schedule!
Twas you
I will be there. Spurs vs Citeh is an excellent way to start the season.
Sammy McIlroy's Morecambe side are 1-0 up against Coventry.
Still 0-0 at Ashton Gate.
Henri Lansbury is on for Jack Rodwell.
Leicester take the lead
Leicester are back. 2-1 now.
Make mine a packet of Smoky Bacon.
Did the crisps help Leicester?
Has your screen got some weird thing on FSC
Doncaster are 1-0 up to Accrington Stanley. Never heard of 'em.
England finally score
Danny Rose with the goal
I wonder if they do have a packet of crisps and a pint at half-time?
GOAL 1-0 ENGLAND AS DANNY ROSE SCORES AFTER STURRIDGE SEES HIS SHOT BLOCKED BY THE KEEPER!!
Danny Rose could easily find his way into the full squad before long.
FSC just announced that they were having technical difficulties
Rose scores as there are Rose tinted pictures on the telly due to technical difficulties.
Bloody hell - Port Vale are now 0-3 up at QPR!
STRUTH
THREE NIL DOWN
QPR
Leicester now 3-1 up and munching the crisps now.
Nearly 1-1 as an Uzbeck player has a free header and heads just over.
Salt and Vinegar, Cheese and Onion and Smokey Bacon
against Macclesfield
Notts County beating Plymouth
Plymouth are 0-1 down to Notts County after having won at the weekend.
Oxford have scored a fifth!
I will eat any flavor except salt and vinegar. I was never able to get used to that flavor.
I'm with you on the salt and vinegar, MUR. I'd have prawn cocktail before that one.
Extra time and pens tonight for the cup games
Salt and Vinegar is the best!!!
Fifty minutes in and Grayson is sticking with the starting XI. I'm surprised that he hasn't withdrawn Becchio. With Paynter injured, we definitely need his goals.
Kyle Walker wins a corner after a great run.
Marc Albrighton is on for Daniel Sturridge.
Ipswich are now losing to Exeter... my two promotion teams, Ipswich and QPR, are leaving themselves free from Cup matches to concentrate on the league!
I'm still feeling the weekend. I'm cream crackered. I'm off to get a Snickers out of the machine.
Italy losing at home to Ivory Coast
Kolo Toure with the goal
Not exactly the performance the Italians needed after the WC Fiasco
Italy losing at home to Ivory Coast
Kolo Toure with the goal
Not exactly the performance the Italians needed after the WC Fiasco
Brooking, Clemence, and Cap are in the stands tonight.
Mancienne nearly scores with a curler that hits the top of the net.
Albrighton blasts a shot straight at the keeper.
Morcombe have doubled their lead against Coventry
I am still tired from the weekend as well. I will need a few more days to recover.
Alex McCarthy is on for Frankie Fielding.
Wednesday take the lead against Bury
England double their lead...not sure of the scorer
GOAL 2-0 England!!! Martin Kelly heads in a cross from the short corner.
Shrewsbury 3 Charlton 3
The keeper, who has an excellent match, should have done better.
They were three nil down!!
QPR trying to do the same... 1-3
England win another corner, then Rose wins yet another corner.
Ipswich have tied it up
The Tractor Boys are back in the match. 1-1 there.
Bob must have gotten a really big Snickers bar!!
Bob must have gotten a really big Snickers bar!!
Smalling misses his header as his United teammate Wellbeck puts in an excellent cross from another short corner.
Marc Albrighton misses a sitter. That should have been 3-0. Bob should share his snickers bar if it's that big.
Just your ordinary sized Snickers bar, actually. I just needed a pick me up. I want to get a swim in at 5 and then I have a meeting at 6:30.
The match at Shrewsbury sounds like a classic.
Finally Grayson has given Becchio and Bradley Johnson a break. Our American Mike Grella and Aidan White on for them.
Sotton have taken the lead against Bournemouth in the South Coast derby
Transfer news?
The Saints are finally in the lead. Lallana with the goal.
Carvalho to Real Madrid!
Chelsea have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for Carvalho
I could have sworn that it was going to be Alexandre Pato coming to Leeds. Shame that.
Good riddance to him... he was a dirty bastard!
The Uzbek sub about to come on looks like he's fifteen.
Chesterfield 1 Boro 2 in a repeat of the famous FA Cup Semi
It was more like he was comically clumsy, especially at set pieces. But he usually got away with it!
Boro were lucky in that semi. I agree with your statement regarding Carvalho.
Dirty Bastard
Leeds get their fourth from the spot
I agree that Carvalho was dirty bastard.
YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
4-0 Leeds! Penalty earned by Lloyd Sam and converted by Neil Kilkenny!
A streaker was on the pitch at Ashton Gate. FSC did not show that.
A great night for Leeds!
Tractor Roys have taken the lead at the other St. James Park
Shame - I always like to see the cameras follow the streakers - even the men. A bit of comic relief. Remember the classic 70s pic of the copper using his hat to cover up the naughty bits of the streaker?
The attendance at Ashton Gate was 9,821.
MUR, who do you agree with? Me or BD?
I remember that
I agree with you, UWS.
Well done lad
Up yours, Bob
I don't remember the copper using his hat. I moved to England in 1977. That might have been before my time.
So the big sides in a spot of bother tonight are Coventry, Derby, QPR and Brighton.
STRUTH!!!
Charlton three up inside 30 minutes
Shrewsbury are now 4-3 up
England defeat Uzbekistan 2-0. It could have and should have been more.
Millwall have been pegged back
King Eric!!!!
ohh aah Cantona
Here's that photo:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5Gq2ImzLPDI/R8V-ZVBZreI/AAAAAAAAAWk/sxxmXU72Dp0/s400/STREAKER.jpg
The 70s really were the heyday of hippie streakers.
I like those Foster adds
I'm really enjoying these new Foster's ads with the Aussie lads doing the call-in show.
