US v. France Semi Final Live!
After the miraculous penalty kick win in the quarters against Marta and the impressive Brazilians, it's definitely time to get excited about the US women and the Women's World Cup in Deutschland. The US are up again this morning against the French in the semis. Coverage on ESPN starts at 11:30 am. Anyone care to join me?

At work but I'll see what I can do.
Sure, Someone - I get you. A lazy summer morning at home is one of the great pleasures of academic work but don't tell Cuomo!
ESPN coverage starting up....
Here's the team news out of Munchengladbach:
USA: Solo, Rampone, Sauerbrunn, Lepeilbet, Boxx, Rodriguez, O'Reilly, Lloyd, Krieger, Cheney, Wambach.
Subs: Mitts, O'Hara, Cox, Rapinde, Lindsey, Heath, Barnhart, Loyden, Buehler.
France: Sapowicz, Georges, Meilleroux, Soubeyrand, Bompastor, Abily, Lepailleur, Necib, Bussaglia, Thiney, Delie.
Subs: Deville, Renard, Boulleau, Franco, Le Sommer, Thomis, Pizzala, Bretigny, Viguier, Philippe.
Bad news in the warm-up - Hope Solo seems to have tweaked her hamstring. We'll have to keep an eye on it.
The key to victory of course is fellow Gator Abby Wambach's goals. She's notched 128 in 156 appearances for the US - what a strike rate!
Teams in the tunnel.
La Marseillaise - still the greatest anthem in world football.
And we're off in Munchengladbach.
ESPN-3 is failing. Aargh!
Can you play around with p2p at work, Someone?
First corner for the US. Wambach the obvious target. Always falling away.
If so, this link is working:

First work for Hope Solo, tipping over a shot from Necib.
GOAL! Cheney knocks in the opener!
1-0 US!
That was really made by a lovely little flick down the line by Lloyd. O'Reilly then took on the fullback and stuck over a brilliant ball in the danger area. Cheney beat the keeper to the ball and directed it in.
Great start for the US!
That was fast!
Oh - Sapowicz was all at sea there and a better header from Wambach would have put the US 2-0 up!
Sauerbrunn is having a particularly good debut - big match for her to come in on.
And the trey is streaming. Hello Mr. Darke.
A dangerous France free kick now....driven into the wall.
Ambitious header by Lloyd off the corner goes wide.
Glad to have you on board. Enjoy the Darke vowel chewing.
The US are knocking it about nicely now. No "Oles" from the crowd, sadly.
Bussaglia strikes one from distance but Solo gets everything behind it. That was important on a slick pitch. It's been drizzling all day in Germany.
The French are knocking on the door now. Abily tries a shot but not enough pace on it to trouble Solo.
US defense has to tighten up on those long shots. The French will shoot all day, from any distance.
Oh - great save from Solo one-on-one with Necib there.
That was a fantastic save!
French are really attacking well, just a matter of time before they finish one if the defense does not wake up a bit. Solo's not going to stop all of them.
Their incredibly cute left back hit the bar.
Oh - Bompastor hits the angle from a header! A let off for the US.
Abily hits another one from distance. I'm not sure that they can beat Solo from 20 yards or more.
Wambach bounces one close to the line. So close!
Oh - Wambach should have scored there. To be fair to her, it was an acute angle, but Rampone hit her so well with the cross. Nearly 2-0.
Anyone else in your office watching this one, Someone?
That was a tough angle.
I do not think so. Might walk around at the half and see.
Oh - Wambach again with a great run nearly steered in Boxx's near post cross. And she seems to have knobbled the French keeper.
They're up. Bompastor's ok :)
Actually it was the defender Bompastor that went down. She's up again but walking gingerly. I'm not sure I would want to encounter Abby Wambach in a dark alley.
Lousy corner by the French.
Coming up on the interval, things going to plan for the US. They'll just want to see out these next few minutes and get into the dressing room to re-organize things.
Two minutes of stoppage time to come.
Half-time, then. The US 1-0 up through that excellent Lauren Cheney goal. More of the same in the second half, I hope.
A few defensive adjustments and maybe another goal and the US can make the finals. I do not see the French giving up easy though.
Walked about, the person I thought would be watching the match is not here today.
Krieger came back well on that one.
I've got my ramen on and we're back to the second half now.
Hope Solo wasn't sure about that long effort and played it safe, tipping it around for a corner. French on the front foot in this second half.
You never know, she played that well, as did the US defense on the resulting corner.
Just to confirm, the French striker Delie came off and Le Sommer came on at the interval.
Bugger! The French equalizer through a tantalizing cross by Bompastor that Solo is two minds about about. She expected a header and instead it crept by her at the back post.
1-1.
Told you about Bonpastor. How many yards was that from?
US really needs to get a counter-attack going.
Hey Guys,
I am back from a NYSUT conference.
What a bummer of an equalizer!
They've been sitting back far too much since the opening goal. Morgan has come on for Rodriguez who was a bit anonymous so perhaps we'll get a bit more passing going.
The US can't lose this after all the positive press this week!
Afternoon, UWS - great to have you on board. Are you enjoying the gorgeous weather today?
I agree - the hype demands a final appearance at the very least. People are definitely excited about this match. My Facebook feed was full of it, even from non-footie people.
Are you guys going to be around for my lot MAN UTD vs Bob's lot NE REVS tonight at 8 pm on ESPN2?
I may not be. I will be watching Tom play a few games.
I will be taping it
We have some storms as I type!
Ian Darke's been chatting a lot in the press about how much he enjoys working with Julie Foudy. And who wouldn't? She's got to smell better than Robbie Mustoe.
Bugger - that's the match we'd been talking about going to. Shame about that, mate. Big footie night tonight in any case - That match at 8pm and Brazil v. Ecuador at 8:45.
Krieger back on. French getting some set pieces. Not much attack by the US.
Lloyd being subbed out.
All the French!!
How was the first half?
First half was mostly French, with a bit of US attack early.
BIg miss by the French!
Bad pass by Solo, lucky.
USELESS CROSS BY MORGAN!
She rushed that cross. Ugh!
Should have gone wide but gets the foul
The ball has been in the French half for a bit!!
Great hit but saved... the rebound is missed but called off side.... that wasn't offside
US showing some life. That was close. Nicely hit free kick.
Morgan's had a couple of chances now. She's young and immature but is getting about a bit.
Nice to and fro to the match now, swinging nicely back and forth. None of the crushing defensive of the big-time men's game.
Did you see what number Ashley Young has been given for United?
Rapinoe has been dangerous since she has come on
#99?
Nope
Yeah - the subs have made a difference for the US. Morgan just needs a bit more composure on the ball.
He has taken Scholsey's number 18!!!
I don't know - I give up.
Cheeky bugger!
Hope Solo is asleep and lets the ball get headed out of her hands!
Disallowed... personally... what's wrong with it!
Do English teams retire numbers?
No they don't but I didn't think it would be used right away!
Becks took over Cantona's #7
Ronny took over it from Becks
Owen took it over from Ron
BUT STILL...
I agree with you, UWS. Goalkeepers are over protected.
Rap puts in a nice cross but Leeds future striker was looking for a free kick!
YES!!!!!
ELLAND ROAD LASS HAS SCORED AGAIN!!!!
GOAL! Is that Gator Abby Wambach again!
2-1!
Just over 10 to go
I'd love me some Wambach at Elland Road, for sure.
Air Wambach!!!!!!
Great corner by Cheney!
oooh, that was a chance at the back post!
Oh - Le Sommer had a chance there but headed wide.
Sent an email to Todd R last night and he replied to me this afternoon... Great to hear from him
This is not over.
YES!!
THREE ONE!!
GREAT FINISH BY MORGAN
Oh yes! Morgan has wrapped it up with a special goal.
3-1.
Two goals in three minutes
Oh that was sweet.
Defense. Defense!
Oh - that deflection off Krieger could have gone in!
The French piling on the pressure.
Oh - great ball from Wambach but O'Reilly should have hit the ball first time.
Nice move from France but Le Sommer hasn't had her shooting boots on today.
Morgan was behind the back again but the keeper did well.
ooh, Morgan almost in again... nice save
Morgan makes a great effort but is denied by the French keeper.
Two minutes and stoppage left.
90 minutes are up.... two added minutes
Into stoppage time.
Congrats to the USA... the country will still be in love with you!!!
TTFN
That's it - the US are into their third World Cup Final. Fantastic!
That's it for me, lads. I'm off to play some tennis. I'll look for you again for a night of the footer.
Have a great day gentlemen!
I am back for the last ten minutes of the other semi final
Surprisingly, the score is Japan 3 Sweden 1
I think everyone thought it would be the Swedes in the Final.
Japan are known as the Spain of Woman's game with their passing and movent
England did beat them in the group stage
Into stoppage time... still 3-1
It is over
Japan 3 Sweden 0
Sunday's WOLRD CUP FINAL
United States of America vs Japan
TTFN
