Champions League Gameday 1!
Don't mention the war today as the long road to Munich starts here with the two London clubs facing off against German opposition (Chelski host Leverkusen while the Arse are away at Dortmund) today in Gameday 1 of the Champions League. Unfortunately, I'll be away from the computer teaching during much of it. But I'll look forward to reading your comments here. Enjoy!

I'm back at my first break and it's all square in the two England v. Germany matches.
Way hay - two World Wars, one World Cup and now two Champions League wins in the offing for Chelski and the Arse today. Both are at 1-0 with time running out.
Shame. Dortmund leveled it with the Arse on 88 minutes. The Arse were minutes away from a really great three point away start to the campaign.
Chelski meanwhile have coasted to a 2-0 win over Leverkusen. Decent night for the English.
I'm back on Wednesday afternoon after a particularly tedious faculty meeting to enjoy an afternoon of footer.
First up is the United trip to Lisbon to meet Benfica. Should be a brilliant match.
Then I'm going to try to avoid the Citeh result during the early match and watch that one on FSC tape delayed.
Here are the sides for today's rematch of the 1968 final:
Benfica (4-3-3) Artur; Maxi Pereira, Luisao, Garay, Emerson; Ruben Amorim, Javi Garcia, Witsel; Aimar, Cardozo, Gaitan.
Substitutes Eduardo, Bruno Cesar, Nolito, Rodrigo, Matic, Saviola, Jardel.
Manchester United (4-3-3) Lindegaard; Fabio, Smalling, Evans, Evra; Fletcher, Carrick, Giggs; Valencia, Rooney, Park.
Substitutes De Gea, Jones, Owen, Anderson, Berbatov, Hernandez, Nani.
Looks like a fairly cautious approach from Fergie with only Rooney as a possible outlet. Valencia and Old Man Giggs provide the width and Park with be busy as ever. Fletcher and Carrick are the two holding middies. Conservative.
And we're off with an electric atmosphere in the stadium.
Bit of a nervy start from Lindegaard in the United goal. They really do miss VDS this season.
Just a reminder of yesterday's scores:
Group E:
Chelski 2 Leverkusen 0
Genk 0 Valencia 0
Group F:
Dortmund 1 Arse 1
Olympiacos 1 Marseille 1
Group G:
Apoel 2 Zenit 1
Porto 2 Shakhtar 1
Group H:
Barca 2 Milan 2
Viktoria 1 BATE 1
The ref seems to be giving a lot of the 50/50 challenges to Benfica so far.
Lots of cut and thrust but precious few real chances for either side so far.
Oh - Fabio completely missed a clearance and Gaitan should have done better with his shot. He's the new Argentine whiz kid signed this summer from Boca.
Oh - Fabio is crunched there as he goes through to the by-line.
Oh - Cardozo took the opportunity to latch onto another bad ball from Carrick in order to pile one at Lindegaard. Fergie can't be happy with Carrick's sloppiness here.
Benfica are just starting to realize that Fergie hasn't put the A team out today and that they've got a chance. They're growing in confidence.
No goals in the other CL matches so far half way through the first half. No terribly good value, is it?
GOAL! Benfica take the lead through Cardozo!
Brilliant goal there. A lovely pass with the outside of the right boot by Gaitan and then Cardozo brought it down and made space with one touch before hammering past Lindegaard.
1-0 Benfica!
That goal was definitely coming. Fergie can hardly be surprised that they've given up possession when he's got Chicharito, Berbatov and Nani on the bench!
That's interesting. The camera finds Berba on the bench who's got a broad smile on his face. What is he thinking?
Rooney picks up a yellow card for a Nat Lofthouse style shoulder barge on the keeper.
Rob Smyth of the Guardian says:
"28 min: United just haven't got going in attack. They are, in approach and effectiveness, unrecognisable from the side that has charmed the pants off English football in the last month."
Aimar ran at the back four there who didn't shut him down. He finally went for glory with a long shot.
Big claim for a penalty there from Benfica but the ref waves on.
Oh - Giggs lost the ball badly in a dangerous position and Valencia was forced to track back well. The Old Man is clearly out of his depth tonight.
Hey Bob
I am home.
Didn't realize you were around today
Not very impressive at all by United
The team choice isn't too good either
I'm avoiding the Group A scores, but there are no scores yet in the other Group B, C and D matches.
Only two goals so far tonight
Bayern's and Benfica's
Lindegaard with another poor clearance there. Nothing is going right for United who could easily be 2-0 down at this point.
Why are you avoiding Group A games?
I'll stop talking!!
Hiya, Dave. I agree with you on the team choice. Why change a side that's winning by an average of four goals per game?
I'm going to try and keep away from the Citeh scoreline as I'd like to watch the match on FSC after this. So, schtum on the score there, eh?
No need to have just one up front.. especially if it is Rooney. He could still play but have someone else up there
Okay, can I mention the other match in the group?
Four nil... just kdding
United's midfield is giving the ball away ALL THE TIME!!!
Yeah, no probs. Who are Bayern playing?
For the few times actually gets in the box, he is surrounded by six defenders
I agree - did you see Drac smiling on the bench after the goal?
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GIGGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OUT OF NOTHING!!
GOAL! Giggs picks one out of the top drawer!
1-1!
The defenders really backed off the Old man and he picked his spot in the top right. Fergie loves it!
Basle have taken the the lead at home against Galati in United's group
That's predictable. Galati is likely to be the group whipping boy.
Bloody short corner comes to nothing
United doing okay now... SAF knows best apparently!
12 NIL TO NAPOLI!!!
Lille take the lead against CSKA
My bad... it is Thirteen nil in Manchester... oh sorry... I need to shut up
Off for a walk with Shadow... I'll be back
That's half-time, then. United were rubbish for 40 minutes before that Giggs goal. 1-1 is the unlikely scoreline at the interval.
Nice Benfica banner with "E Pluribus Unum" inscribed on it.
The second half is getting ready to start then.
Teams out for the second half
COme on United... play better
Citeh losing 12 to 17.... hell of a game!
ooh, United should have done better there!
Oh - a real chance there for United. Valencia capitalized on a bad ball out from Luizao and fizzed a low ball across the six yard box. No one there for United to stab it home. You'd think that Chicharito would have gobbled up that chance.
Very funny, you silly sod. I can't believe that you're giving me stick for wanting to watch a match without knowing the score ahead of time. That's a basic thing for a sports fan.
United have started a tad better
Just having a bit of fun...I'll stop
I won't be around on Saturday because of boys' games. Will you be?
I see that Brighton and Leeds is being televised so you will be able to get a link
Your United vs My United next Tuesday... won't be around I don't think
I will be around this weekend, yeah. Looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I'll miss out on the United v. United match for my class.
United won all of their away games last season in the CL(group and knock out).... except the Final
Lille are 1-0 against CSKA through some bloke named Sow.
Tight offside decision against Benfica there but the linesman got it right.
Aimar found some space on the turn and rifled a shot just wide left.
Offside but hits the inside of the post
Real Madrid take the lead in Zagreb
Di Maria
Amorim is off and Nolito on for Benfica - an attacking move.
I announced that score months ago
Di maria has scored for Real away to Zagreb.
Nolito very like Nocito
Alright, alright, alright, alright.
Fancy a go off the bench for Benfica today, do you mate?
Inter still be held by Trabzonspor at home nil nil
I announced that score ages ago.
Lille have doubled their lead against CSKA
Can I just mention that Lille are now 2-0 up over Moscow?
Galati has tied it up against Basle
Pedretti with the goal there for Lille.
Sorry there isn't time... I've just heard from Luton... that my aunt is ill
Pana has equalized for Galati. Maybe they aren't as bad as I thought. Or maybe Basel are rubbish.
Gastroenteritis or just cattarh?
Nice cross by Valencia there.... wonder if Young is pissed that he joined United for CL football
ooh, How did Giggs miss!!
It was saved
Impressive spelling btw
Herrnandez about to come on... for who?
I would take Roon off by SAF wouldn't
phew!!!
United caught on the break... what a save!!!
Oh - It's Nolito with a great shot and saved so well by Lindegaard.
That's why I get the big bucks, mate.
United giving away too many chances here... they are giving them too much space
Oh - Emerson got round the back there but he might have tried to bend it with his right peg instead.
Chic on for Fletch... Roon moves back?
I agree... I would have done that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpIGqvGnsHQ
Did Nani come on too?
Lindegard comes out well to punch it away... not a bad keeper
Lille 2 CSKA 1
Nani did come on... he is getting booed by his fellow Portuguese.
Are you happier with this second half performance?
Nani came on for Valencia who made his first appearance since being hurt in the Copa America
Slightly
Real down to ten men
Marcelo with a second yellow
Benfica having too many chances for my liking right now
Another fine save by Lindy
Jones on for Fabio
Munich two up in Valencia
Phil Jones coming on for Fabio who's been roughed up quite a bit today.
Inter Milan 0 Trabzonspor 1
Wow - that's quite a scoreline!
Basle have retaken the lead
CSKA have come all the way back and tied it up
All over at the SOL.... 1-1
Ajax and Lyon have ended scoreless
Munich have won 2-0 in Spain
Basle have beaten Galati and top the group in front of United and Benfica
Lille have drawn against CSKA after being two up
Game in Manchester over... no comment
Ten-man Real have won in Zagreb
INTER HAVE LOST AT HOME TO TRABZONSPOR
ALl scores
