U.S. v. Costa Rica Live!
Well, we were having just a bit too much Dahlgren fun this afternoon to catch the goings-on from Sofia, but we're settling in now with a growler full of fresh "Black Hops" beer from EBC for the U.S. v. Costa Rica late one out of Carson City tonight. If you're around and about tonight and keen for some more international action, join us. Come on, you boys!

The ESPN2 switchboard is no doubt going bonkers right now as they're pre-empting the start of the match with a tape delayed US Open tennis match. Grrrr!!!!!
Roddick has finally polished off the infernal Sock and we should be on to the match forthwith. Come on!
Way hay - Ian and John are on.
The US side tonight:
Howard, Cherundolo, Castillo, Bocanegro, Orozco Fiscal, Edu, Torres, Donovan, Rogers, Shea, Altidore.
Off we go, then.
Robbie Rogers proving the frustrated Columbus fans right there with a run up a blind alley from the kick-off.
Jurgen looking rather enigmatic tonight on the sidelines.
Hello BD. I am here to join you for a late Friday night match. How was your week?
Brek Shea was just offside as a long ball was played.
Fantastic, mate! Great to have you on board tonight. It's been brilliant having the family here this weekend, even if we did have to sacrifice the England match this afternoon.
I don't know this Shea character at all, but Gooner doesn't seem to think much of him.
Oh - how did the Tin Man miss that one!
Just wide by Landy as Shea played him through.
Shocking miss from Landycakes.
Jozy shoots into the side netting.
Shea is proving Gooner wrong so far with another brill ball to Jozy who hits the side netting. The Dallas FC man looking good.
Did Steve Eric ,and Melanie come up? It must have been an excellent week.
I'm a bit surprised to see Jose Torres getting another look-in as I thought he was a bit lightweight in earlier outings but perhaps Jurgen wants to give everyone a chance.
Yeah - they flew in for Labor Day weekend yesterday. We're heading off to Cleveland to check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum tomorrow and get some tasty Polish food.
Shea is a young Texan who plays for FC Dallas. He came on as a sub in Jurgen's first match in charge of the U.S.
Sounds like a fantastic weekend. Have lots of fun!
It was a great result for England with help from Wales, who will be tier opponents at Wembley on Tuesday.
This match must be played on the west coast if it is on so late.
Thanks, mate. We will do. How was your first week back?
Yes - this is at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, CA.
I have been back for two weeks and it has been rather hectic. I come home feeling really exhausted.
A poor cross by German born Chandler after a one-two with Shea.
Sorry, mate. I thought you had just started this week. I'm sure it has been hectic. Good crop of kids, though?
A bit time to get the card out, ref. About nine or ten fouls so far.
I am not sure yet. They have good conduct, but don't have the greatest work ethic. How are your students?
Gooner and I think the US side are taking the piss tonight by wearing Costa Rica's usual red and blue kit.
So far it's been great. But I usually have a more leisurely start to the semester than you will. I get my first set of papers in on Tuesday. We'll see then.
I thought Timmy tipped that shot around the post, but the ref awarded a goal kick.
I thought it was a good save from Timmy.
They fooled me when I turned on the match. Each team is wearing the other team's normal kit. Jurgen has a sense of humor.
The U.S. have been awarded a free kick in a great position as the ref called a hand ball.
I agree - it's that dry Teutonic wit.
Landy shot inches over from the free kick.
That Jurgen is a sly one!
I saw that Holland hit San Marino for ELEVEN!
How's the family, mate? Everyone doing well?
Rubbish free kick there from Landy straight into the keeper's arms.
It seems as if Timmy Chandler may be challenging Cherunduloh for the right back position.
Yeah - Gooner was delighted to see that RVP bagged four!
The keeper came out as Jozy was played through.
I saw that. I guess they were easier opposition than EPL teams.
Andy Keogh and Darren O'Dea represented Leeds as they were on the subs bench for The Republic of Ireland today.
Yeah - RVP wishes he could face San Marino defenders rather than Smalling and Jones every week.
The U.S have a free kick as Jose Martinez of Costa Rica was booked. The free kick was cleared.
Way hay - maybe Snoddy got another cap for Scotland too. Cap'n Birdseye is gradually building up our international contingent. We got Croatian journeyman Bosko Balaban in the other day on loan.
Costa Rica got away with sloppy defending , but the keeper was out in time as Shea was lurking.
Scotland play tomorrow morning at 10 AM vs the Czechs. Bosko Balaban was a bust with Villa about eight years ago. He was a supposed player of the future who never could hack it with Villa. I hope he can do a job in the Championship.
The transfer window was interesting as Wenger went against his philosophy and went for experience. I think Kronke let him have it and put Wenger in his place. I wonder what makes of the fact that Arsenal could start with four new players next weekend.
I meant to say what does Gooner think of four new players starting.
I thought that was a fair tackle by Edu. It is disgraceful that the Costa Ricans are telling the ref to book Edu.
It's still interesting that Wenger avoided buying English defenders who were on offer. It's his main blind spot IMHO and worth sacking him.
He inherited one of the greatest back fours in English history and they won him the double. But he's never trusted an English defender since.
It is now Saturday morning on the East Coast.
Gooner reckons that Chandler's the only one who looks composed on the ball. He's not so keen on the Orozco-Fiscal. He's starting to grudgingly admit that Brek Shea has played well. He reckons that Martinez should have been booked already.
Yes - it's a late night in the Blue Devil HQ.
He signed Jenkinson from Charlton this summer when he couldn't even start for Charlton. Eight appearances in eighteen months. He was sent on loan to Eastbourne because he couldn't make the starting eleven for Charlton, but was starting for the Gunners immediately. That doesn't make since.Wenger has been unsupervised, but I think Kronke will be breathing down his neck and letting him know who is in charge.I wonder if that will be enough to make Wenger want to leave.
At this point in the match, England were 0-3 up away from home in Bulgaria.
The US? 0-0 against the Ticos at home (sigh).
If Andy Two Saints is so talented why was he playing in Turkey instead of a top league.IS that the best Arsenal can do. I have always liked Benayoun and Arteta , but that was that their primary concern.
Wenger's had some English players around the place but he obviously doesn't rate them. They typically go out on loan and then get shopped.
Landy broke, but the cross was cleared.
I agree. The U.S. did have several chances, so Jurgen will be expecting better in the second half. Two minutes of stoppage time.
I agree with you. It would have been one thing if Wenger had strategically bought players like Arteta and Benayoun in over the summer. As it was, it looked like desperation.
I think Wilshere is rated, but he is injured. Wenger was a disgrace after the 8-2 loss. He acted like it was not a big deal. I would have sacked based on that. Piers Morgan wants Martin O'Neill to take over at The Em. I am inclined to agree.
Timmy tips over from Alvaro Sanchez.
The corner is cleared and the halftime score is 0-0.
Time for another Sam Adams.
Enjoy, mate. We're having a nice microbrew from a local place.
Jurgen is sporting a very natty US Soccer polo. I wouldn't mind that under the tree, Santa.
How about a Leeds jersey. what did you think of England's kit today. They wore navy blue shirts and sky blue shorts.I wasn't too keen.
Is it possible that the color guy here with Big Red is the Jorge Ramos who used to be the charismatic Mexican goalkeeper who sported the colorful jerseys back in the 90s?
It didn't look so clever in the pictures. What were Bulgaria wearing?
Ian Darke is talking about dual citizenship. There are several players playing in Germany with dual citizenship. Timmy Chandler is one example. Another is Jermaine Jones.
I don't think so. He looks bigger than the keeper. I think it is a different person.I think Bulgaria wore their traditional white shirts and green shorts.
So, why wouldn't England wear the red with white shorts then?
They mentioned about six players who have dual citizenship with Mexico. Many of them were not interested when Bob Bradley was in charge. That is part of why Klinnsman was put in charge.
I am not sure. This might be their new away kit.
My Belizean brothers pulled out a fabulous 0-3 win today in CONCACAF qualifiers.
Makes no sense at all. We only won our only major trophy wearing the red.
Well done Belize. If they finish in the top two then I guess they advance to the final round of Qualifying or will there be another round after that?
This is the second round. The big boys come in in the Third Round and then there is a final Fourth round in the late fall 2012 with all of the top teams in. It's still a long road for my Belizeans. I would love to see a qualifier when I'm down there in January though.
Ian Darke thinks the US were "brilliant" in the first half - I don't know which match he was watching.
If they make it to the next round then perhaps they could get the U.S. or their near neighbors , Mexico, in the same group.
16 fouls to 4 for Costa Rica. Ouch!
They were decent midway through the first half, but I agree that they were not brilliant.
The second half is underway.
This is the first time in the nation's history that Belize have progressed to the Second Round.
It will be close to 1:15 AM EDT when this match ends.A rather late match. I wonder if anyone will be around for the Scotland match tomorrow.
Clumsy by Fiscol, but the U.S. break.
What time is the Scots match on tomorrow?
I think Germany and Italy have already qualified. Holland need one more win.
The Scots match starts at 10 AM.
The goal won't count as Jozy was offside despite a great pass from Robbie Rogers.
Jozy was a mile offside as he slotted home there. Good ball through from Rogers though.
The Spanish are through, aren't they?
The Italians have been really unconvincing. Only 0-1 against the Faroes.
Landy picks up a needless yellow for handball there.
Spain are almost through. They need a win and a Czech loss to qualify. Spain hosts Liechtenstein on Tuesday and The Czechs are at Hampden Park tomorrow.
Oh - the Ticos nearly nicked one there. We're getting sloppy here.
It was enough for the Italians to clinch qualification. I think they want to do just enough to qualify.
Time to stick Juan Agudelo on at this point, don't you think?
Ian Darke agree with you. I do too.
That's the irritating element about the Italians. They never exert themselves more than needed.
Have you noticed that odd double sideline on this side of the pitch? It almost seems as if maybe the Galaxy play with a more narrow pitch or something.
I think so. Jurgen needs to change something.Rodney Wallace of the Portland timbers is on for the Ticos despite dual citizenship with the U.S.
Jurgen wanted to expand the pitch as he must not be a fan of MLS style pitches.
Here we go - Agudelo on for Jozy. That's the business, Jurgen.
Aguedelo is on for Jozy as BD stated. Well done.
That's what it looks like to me.
GOAL! Bloody hell! Ticos 1-0 up!
The Ticos broke the offside trap through Saborio, played a square ball. Timmy saved well and the sub Rodney Wallace nodded home.
Bugger.
GOAL !!! 1-0 TICOS AS RODNEY WALLACE SCORES SECONDS AFTER COMING ON IN HIS INTERNATIONAL DEBUT AS TIMMY SAVED FROM CLOSE RANGE AND WALLACE HEADED IN THE REBOUND.
Sasha on for Rogers.
To be honest, this goal was coming. The U.S. have been sloppy in the second half.
I thought Shea was fouled . That should have been a free kick.
Timmy does well to come out as he thwarted another Costa Rican attack. Now the U.S. have a corner.
I agree - you could see exactly what the Ticos had in mind for this one.
That corner fizzed right across the area. No one home to stab home.
Nice near post header , but nobody was around to nod home , and Costa Rica break.
The keeper does well to tip a long range Torres effort around the post.
The corner is headed away and the ref blows for a foul.
That's not on. This is supposedly a home match in California and the crowd's going "Ole" for the Ticos now.
Landy is fouled just outside the box and the Costa Rican defender is booked.
The free kick is headed away.
another free kick for the U.S.
Shocking behavior from the American fans.
Agudelo thinks he was held back there. And he was. Should have been a penalty.
Was Aguedelo fouled in the box as Landy shot.
The CR coach is going potty about something now on the touchline.
I think it is because a substitution was not made.
Shea with a great run into the area and now there are handbags. Shea picks up a soft yellow.
A fight breaks out as Shea is booked. This is supposed to be a friendly.
Ridiculous antics again from the Ticos now. Sasha booked now.
The yellow was due to poor sportsmanship by the Costa Ricans and a ref that was easily conned.
The problem is that the ref didn't book enough players in the first half. Three or four CR players should be on cards and wary at this point.
I agree. He had had a really poor match.
Edu with a hopeless shot there.
A poor long range effort from Edu.
These Costa Rican antics are becoming ridiculous.
They are, indeed. Time after time the Costa Ricans have learned that they can get results out of us by thugging it up and hoping that it will rattle the US college boys.
Better from the U.S. as the Costa Rican keeper makes a great save after a great solo run by Aguedelo.
The keeper saves a decent long range effort from Shea.
It's not very good, Jurgen. Is it?
The Gooner is trying to put a positive spin on this match by saying that Jurgen may learn some lessons tonight. I hope so.
That could have been 2-0 to Costa Rica as a great cross was put in the box, but the forward missed the header.
Fortunately, it is a friendly . there is a lot to learn.Four minutes of stoppage time.
Well in, ref. We pick up a soft free kick in a dangerous area.
Aguedelo is fouled just outside the box.
a Costa Rican is booked for encroachment.
Sasha shoots the free kick into the wall.
A dreadful training pitch set-up there with Sasha finally blasting into the bottom of the wall.
Agudelo did well to chase that one down.
That's it and the U.S. end with a disappointing 0-1 loss to Costa Rica.
A shocking defeat in the end there. There is no way that the US should ever be defeated at home by Costa Rica. Terrible result.
Will you be around for the Scots match? You stated that you are headed for The Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame.
I agree. Jurgen will need to get better performances from the U.S.
We'll likely be on the road to Cleveland during the Scots match. But enjoy. Nice chatting with you as usual mate.
Cheers!
Cheers, BD. I hope you and Gooner have a great time in Cleveland. I am off to Bedfordshire.
