Damn the Hurricanes - it's the Premiership Weekend!
Batten down the hatches and get ready for some roof-raising Premiership action because we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto! I'm here extra early for the start of another exciting Premiership weekend. Crank up the generators, nail a few more boards on the windows and join me for all the action, won't you?
443 Comments:
First up is a Brummie derby between Wolves and Villa on ESPN2 starting at the ungodly hour of 7:05. That's followed at the bottom of the hour with Wigan v. QPR.
The teams for this morning's clash:
Villa: Given, Herd, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, N'Zogbia, Petrov, Delph, Agbon, Heskey, Bent.
Wolves: Hennessy, Stearman, Berra, Johnson, Ward, Jarvis, Henry, O'Hara, Hunt, Fletcher, Doyle.
Both of these sides have had unbeaten starts so they start at 3rd v. 4th. The winner would quite absurdly go top for a few hours at least.
We're just about ready for kick-off then and I'm off to fix me breakies.
good morning BD. I have coffee brewing and it is dark outside.
Stephen Hunt took a succession of short corners, but made up for it by winning the ball back.
Morning, MUR! I appreciate the effort to get up at this early hour. Even Ian and Macca are complaining about the early kick-off.
Villa under the cosh with all of these early set pieces.
Hunt did better as his compatriot, Given had to tip the free kick over.
It's great to see LUFC academy Fab Delph getting a regular game under Alex McLeish for Villa.
I will only be around for the first match today as we have to go to Melanie's Bat Mitzvah. My brothers and a nephew came down for the event.
Stilian Petrov shot wide.
It's going to be an exciting day for you and your family. I'm hoping that some of the East Coasters will be around today. We may be the only LOBers with power tomorrow morning for the big one, though.
Lovely late summer day in Birmingham from the looks of it.
Darren Bent shoots a free kick straight into the wall.
I hope the other LOBers fare well. I remember being without power during Hurricane Dolly three years ago for three days. It was not fun at all, so I do not envy them.
It is a beautiful day in Birmingham.
Ian is bitching about the kick-off time again. Get over it, mate. Spare a thought for us! West Coasters have just got in from their Friday nights out!
A Villa Player is down after big Wayne Hennessey punch a corner from Fabian Delph away.
Chris Herd is out for the count as he strikes his head horribly on the Sunday roast. Ouch!
I agree. west Coasters have to wake up at 4 AM. Ian was up too late.
He really got it from Hennessey. Glad he's okay.
Fabian Delph looks and plays like Ashley Young.
No coverage of the Wigan v. QPR match coming up on FSC. They're doing the Chelski v. Norwich at ten and the late one between Pool and Bolton.
Actually, it was N'Zgobia that took that corner.
Wolves counter after a poor corner.
Kevin Doyle to Arsenal? That's a non-starter.
Sounds like the QPR owners are starting to open up the purse strings. Luke Young and Joey Barton going to Loftus Road in the past day.
Oh - Hunt should have done better there with that cross. Hit Given with the header.
QPR should survive with those type of signings.
Karl Henry working his way toward a first half booking again. It's all a bit plodding really.
Typical Karl Henry.
Just wide by Heskey after a good run and cross by Agbon.
O'Hara shoots wide after a great Wolves possession.
Here's a link for the Wigan v. QPR match if you're interested. It's just kicked off:
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/80660/1/watch-wigan-athletic-vs-queens-park-rangers.html
I see Cap watching the Villa players ahead of nest weekend's internationals while Trap has a couple of players he could be watching.
Thank you for the link, but I am not sure if that one would catch my eye this early in the morning.
O'Hara heads wide from a great cross.
I think Trap has more players to watch than Fabio. Given, Hunt, O'Hara, probably some others.
Fabio's just watching Darren Bent. I hope he's not considering Ivanhoe.
Steven Fletcher is down receiving treatment.
I think he has several at West Brom too. There is also Given and Dunne on Villa. Cap may be watching Agbon and Bent, but hopefully not Heskey. He might be watching Warnock too.
I see we agree on Ivanhoe.
Wigan are all over QPR early on. The London side look as if they're going to struggle in the Premiership.
Another early kick off in two weeks as Sunderland vs Chelski will be at the same time as this match.
We're half an hour in and Ian and Macca finally see fit to wish the East Coasters well with Irene. A bit late but heartfelt from the lads.
I wonder if QPR will be a different team with Luke Young and Joey Barton in the lineup. Neil Warnock and Joey Barton are both head cases.
Unfortunately - I'll be away that day (September 10th) as that's the big Belize fundraiser each fall. We run an ATV park for the day down in western PA and usually collect about $1,500 for school supplies to take down with us.
I agree. I beat them by twenty five minutes and thought I was late.
I wish you well that day. I am envious to be honest.
This match has gone a bit flat after a bright opening.
It's a lot of work but well worth it when we get down there.
Agbon won a corner that Herd headed over.
I remember you had a blast last year.
Now Macca's complaining about the early kick-off. Struth!
Still no EPL goals. I wonder if one will be scored before I leave.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
I hope so - I'm a bit goal-starved at present.
Jamie O'Hara picks up a card for a petulant trip on Delph.
He better get used to it because he and Ian will be commentating at the same time in two weeks.
The cameras are pointing out a lot of empty seats at Wigan today. About half-full I'd reckon.
Ivanhoe wins a Villa corner.
I do agree with them about the quality of the corners - they have been hopeless so far.
The first half ens at Villa Park and it is 0-0 in this West Midlands Derby.Still 0-0 from the DW.
Half-time at Villa Park. A lot of running about for very few chances so far in the Brummie Derby.
0-0.
I agree too. They have not beaten the first player.
Half an hour in and still 0-0 at the DW as well.
Villa getting the second half underway now.
I am back from a visit to the lucky chair and gather that I did not miss much.
Wigan have taken the lead against QPR just on the stroke of half-time. I missed the goal, sadly.
YES !!!Wigan have taken the lead against Evil QPR.
QPR now have a -5 goal difference.
I think it is -4 as they won 0-1 at Goodison Park last weekend.
Oh - Gabby Ag took on Roger Johnson there and shot across the keeper. Did well.
Hennessey saves from Agbon and Wolves clear. Now Villa have a free kick just outside the box.
You are correct, sir. -4 goal difference it is.
N'Zogbia with a decent crack at the free kick but straight at Hennessy.
Nzogbia curls the free kick straight to Hennessey.
Wish it was -5.
Macca doesn't fancy Villa at all.
Franco Di Santo, who hardly ever scores, is credited with the first goal in England today.
I agree with Macca. I predict a mid table finish. They should have a similar position to their finish in May.
Half-time at the JJB, then. 1-0 to the home side.
Wigan Lead QPR 1-0 at halftime.
The cross from Stilian Petrov results in a corner after two deflections.
Another Villa corner.
The corner is headed away and Jarvis counters.
Agbon shoots wide after a scramble on the Wolves box. Finally a good corner as Wolves survive. A header from Richard Dunne was cleared off the line.
Oh - some decent pressure there from Villa. First Gabby Ag picks Johnson's pocket and wins a corner. Then Dunne heads toward goal from the corner. Cleared off the line.
Hennessey tipped over a header from Herd and Nzogbia shot over from the resulting corner.
That's a bit better. For a while there Ian and Macca were amusing themselves by talking about table tennis and snooker competitions in the Liverpool camp.
Villa deserve to be in the lead.
And tiddley winks. Macca said that he is an expert.
A great burst of speed by Nzogbia, but his cross finds Hennessey.
Agbon shoots well wide after he done better minutes earlier.
Karl Henry finally winds up in the ref's book. Only a matter of time.
Karl Henry picks up his customary yellow for a typical foul. The correct decision from Martin Atkinson.
Macca correctly complains about the free kick.
As UWS would put it, "where's the quality?"
Two Wolves changes then. Kevin Foley and George Ellikobi on for Hunt and Jarvis.
Wolves make two changes.Kevin Foley is on for Stephen Hunt.Elekobi is on for MaMtt Jarvis.
I would agree with that statement about the quality with the exception of a five minute spell for Villa.
Wolves have a free kick, but it seemed to be a fair challenge . The free kick is headed to Given. Petrov wins a corner off of Henry.
Oh - N'Zogbia should have hit the target there. Well wide.
Nzogbia shoots just wide from the dreaded short corner.
It is Yeovil 0 Sheffield United 0 with thirty minutes played.
Stearman's into the book now. We might need a red card for action at Villa Park in the end.
Stearman is booked for a rugby tackle on Agbon.
Leeds have Ipswich away today. I don't know what to think. We've both been inconsistent this season but Ipswich are coming off that awful 7-1 pounding. What will that do to their morale?
The second half has sated at the DW.
N'Zogbia off now and Barry Bannan, who was rubbish as a loanee to us last season, is on.
A surprising substitution as Nzogbia is replaced by Barry Bannon.
I think Leeds should be able to score at Ipswich as they have been really leaky at the back.It would not surprise me if Leeds score several. today.
I once watched Leeds play at Portman Road in the League Cup , with the Host Nation Club.
This must be a dull match if Ian Darke needs to talk about the Wolves side from the 50s.
Could be a real thriller with goals at both ends at Portman Road. Neither back four is terribly confident these days.
I think Ian and Macca are right - Wolves set out their stalls for a point today and they're ten minutes away from getting it and going top of the league temporarily.
I agree. Mick seems content.
Villa fans starting to whistle the play a bit.
Another wolves corner that comes to nothing.
Hennessey had to dive to punch away the cross from Bent. Then Wolves cleared.
Sparky was a little hyper when the doorbell rang. Two girls came over so Melanie can get a makeover. I will not expand as such talk is strictly prohibited on LOB, LOL. I wonder if that is why Sparky was upset.
Fab Delph trotting off. Albrighton coming on. I'm surprised he wasn't starting.
Sheffield United have taken the lead at Yeovil as that match approaches halftime.
Oh - that sounds like fun for Melanie. What a great day!
I agree. I would have started Albrighton. It was good to see Delph get a chance.
Wigan still 1-0 up at the hour mark.
Thanks BD.It will be a busy day today. My brothers fly out at 5:30 AM tomorrow.
Oh - Bent nearly snuck in there to head home Bannon's cross. It looped over the bar.
OOh! Bent jumps higher than Elekobi and sees his header land on top of the net.
Ward wants a late penalty for Wolves but nothing doing.
If this match finishes 0-0 then Villa fans will not be happy with McLeish.
Late, late Wolves free kick now.
Ivanhoe fouls O'Hara just outside the box. He is not a defender. He should be looking for a late winner.
Yeah - five points from three relatively easy matches is not good enough for Villa. They might struggle.
That was never a foul on ward.
Another LUFC alum Sam Vokes is coming on for a late cameo appearance.
The free kick comes to nothing.
Bent nearly scored at the wrong end there.
The free kick from Ward is headed away by Roger Johnson for a corner off the corner flag. The corner was headed away by Bent.
There will be three minutes of stoppage time.
Mick is dreaming of a late winner here. Lots of pressure on Villa.
I made a mistake . Roger Johnson is on Wolves.
DiSanto has scored a second for Wigan against Evil QPR and Warnock is not happy.
Sheffield United lead 0-1 at halftime at Yeovil.
Wolves fans having a laugh singing "We're Top of the League."
Great news, both about the goal and Warnock.
How long will that last?
It finishes 0-0 from Villa Park and Wolves are top of the table for the time being.
0-0 at the end here at Villa Park. Wolves top of the league then. Seven points from three matches for them.
Who would have guessed that Franco Di Santo would be the only goal score in England at this time today.
Wigan are up to 5th temporarily while QPR will surely drop into the bottom half with that inferior goal difference.
Joey Barton's in the stands today and he must be wondering what he's signed up for at QPR.
I'm switching my focus now to the JJB. Twenty minutes left. I'd like to see another goal or two from Wigan.
Jay Bothroyd is coming on for QPR to replace Buzsaky.
I've got the 24/7 hurricane coverage on in the background now. Looks like Irene has reached the Outer Banks of North Carolina already.
One last roll of the dice from Neil Warnock.
I hope all LOBers and for that everyone fares well during Irene. My experience is that the main problem is after the storm.
I hope he rolls a losing combination.
The second half is underway from Yeovil.
I think that's true, MUR. I hope everyone will be safe about it tomorrow, which should be the worst of it for the DC clan. I don't really think UWS will be that badly affected, perhaps a temporary loss of power.
The Blades are unfortunately top of the table at present in L1. They are certainly looking to bounce right back up to the Championship.
Fans are streaming off from the ground. What's their rush?
Bothroyd had a chance there but screwed his shot well wide. He isn't Premiership quality IMHO.
That's the final whistle then. DiSanto's two goal brace wins it for the home side. Wigan up in nose-bleed territory in the league while QPR have lost two badly and just have that slender win from last weekend to hang onto.
Hey Guys,
I slept in and also have guests. I guess I didn't miss much!!!
Hello UWS. It has been a busy Saturday. Unfortunately, I will need to leave as I have some running around to do before the Bat Mitzvah. I will catch everyone tomorrow.

Our battle, Brighton and Liverpool, Chelsea and Fulham
Good morning gentlemen. Got my coffee, thanks for the SS link and I'm here for a bit.
My parents are on Long Island, readying themselves for the storm.
The teams at Portman Road for today:
Leeds: Lonergan, Lees, Kisnorbo, O'Dea, White, Snodgrass, Howson, Clayton, Gradel, McCormack, Keogh. Subs: Rachubka, O'Brien, Thompson, Sam, Nunez.
Ipswich: Stockdale, Cresswell, Delaney, Leadbitter, Edwards, Emmanuel-Thomas, Andrews, Murphy, Sonko, Kennedy, Chopra. Subs: Lee-Barrett, Scotland, Bullard, Carson, Ainsley.
Referee: A D'Urso
Shut it... you said that about the FA Cup a few season back... we all know what happened!
Beautiful weather in Ohio today :)
On the ball City... never mind the danger
Our weather is nice here too... tonight and tomorrow.... not so much!
I am off to pick up Matt from practice
I'll be back soon
Morning, Someone. Good to have you on board. Everton should have a chance today away to Blackburn who have had a wretched start.
Hoping for the best for the toffees. I've for FSC on and SS. Getting ready.
The teams at Stamford Bridge today:
Chelski: Hilario, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Lamps, Drogs, Torres, Malouda.
Norwich: Ruddy, Barnett, De Laet, Whitbread, Naughton, Hoolahan, Johnson, Crofts, Tierney, Holt, Martin.
Your thoughts about the prospects for Celtic to get into the Champions League group stage through the back door?
Let it die. Celtic are not deserving.
Southampton v. Leicester is probably the big match in the Championship.
That's fair enough.
We're back from the commercial break and FSC have missed the kick-off at the Bridge (sigh).
AVB is maintaining the faith with out of form striker Fernando Torres.
We're underway at Portman Road. Come on, you Whites!
Ramires tries a long ranger that Ruddy is forced to tip around.
Blimey - Hilario and JT nearly made a mess of that and Holt was nearly in.
That was a bit of a pile up.
Goal at St. Mary's. Leicester are in front.
GOAL! Bosingwa with a cracker!
1-0~!
Chelsea is up, going to be a long day for Norwich.
Like Ramires earlier, the right back wasn't closed down in front of goal and was allowed to have a crack and it arrowed in past Ruddy. Norwich have a hole to dig out of early.
Leicester are into the top half on the strength of that goal. Graham will be pleased. The Saints drop to second behind Derby at the top.
Jeff Stelling is happy - his beloved Hartlepool are 0-1 up at Rochdale.
Leeds have made the better start at Portman Road according to Tony Cottee. Lovely jubbly!
Graham will like that.
Switched from SS to the Everton match. Good stream going.
I agree with you, Someone. It should be a long day for the Norwich back four. They're all at sea so far.
