Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Footie Riddler of the Week

Sadly, I'm going to be busy this afternoon as the Group Stage of the Europa League kicks off, so I thought I'd post a particularly tricky question related to the history of the tournament:

"Which club has the best record in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (the fore-runner of the fore-runner of the EL) with three wins but, strangely, has never won either the UEFA Cup or the Europa League?"

Good luck, chaps!

is it Spurs?

No - but good guess. Spurs did win the UEFA Cup twice in the early 70s but they never won the old Fairs Cup.

Thanks for the shout-out, but no.

Think of it this way. This was a club who weren't quite as good in the 60s and were thus overshadowed by compatriots who won the European Cup many times. But they've come good in more recent history and thus always compete in the Champions League rather than the UEFA or Europa League.

I know Newcastle United won the Fairs Cup and have never won the UEFA Cup or Europa League. I tihnk the same is true of Arsenal, but I don't think either club set the record for Fairs Cup Wins.I will go with Arsenal. If I am wrong then it must be a non British team.

How about Barcelona.
They were behind Real as they were winning all the European Cups

Well done, UWS. It is Barca who dominated the Fairs Cup at a time when Real Madrid were dominating the European Cup, with wins in 1958, 1960 and 1966 and a runners-up medal in 1962.

They've won the Cup Winners Cup but never the UEFA or Europa League, mainly because they're CL stalwarts these days.
