England Squad, by the numbers
Euro 2012: England give clues about first XI as squad numbers released England's Andy Carroll Andy Carroll will wear the No9 shirt for England at Euro 2012. Photograph: Anthony Devlin/PA England have announced their players' shirt numbers for Euro 2012, after the final squad was submitted to Uefa ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Though reporters have been warned that little should be read into the list, the players selected to wear numbers one to 11 represent a possible first XI. Gary Cahill will wear the No5 shirt, suggesting that he may play in central defence alongside his Chelsea team-mate John Terry instead of Joleon Lescott, who wears No15. Elsewhere only Scott Parker – given No17 – and possibly Stewart Downing – No19 – are pushing for selection in the starting lineup ahead of the first 11 names. Phil Jagielka, called up on Monday as a replacement for the injured Gareth Barry, wears No18. The Football Association has also announced precise details of the kit the team will be wearing during their three group matches. Against France on 11 June they will wear white shirts, white shorts and white socks; against Sweden on 15 June they will wear dark blue shirts, light blue shorts and dark blue socks; against Ukraine on 19 June they will again be in the all-white kit. Thanks for the post, Gooner. I'd like to think that Carroll is part of the definite plans. Not as happy that Terry and Lampard are as well.
I don't know why England managers continue to pick one "Best XI" for every match whether we're playing Germany or Andorra. Surely we'll have to keep it tight against France but could risk playing three up front against the likes of Sweden and Croatia, right? I'd hope that Danny Welbeck will start alongside Carroll against Sweden.
By the way, The Guardian Football Weekly podcast has started its biannual tournament daily diary series. Download from iTunes and the usual sites.
If you asked me to predict Woy's starting XI in the opening match, then it basically would have been what Gooner suggested. I don't agree with it , but figured that's who he would go with. Some food for thought: Two Celtic players who should have made the squad, but did not :
1) Fraser Forster, who has been on loan to Celtic from Newcastle the past two seasons. He has been in superb form and surely must be the second best English keeper after Joe Hart. He must be better than Jack Butlin.
2) Gary Hooper. He scored 27 SPL goals this season and granted it's not the EPL, but he is in better form than Andy Carroll and even scored in the Europa League in case anyone says he can't do it against better opposition.AT the bare minimum, he should have been picked to make the squad and given a chance against Norway.
It's pretty likely that Roy thinks that the Scottish league is no preparation for international football of standard quality. Look at the way our B's turned their national side over on Saturday.
I have no problem with a Championship 'keeper because if anything, he's probably a pretty good shot-stopper, and he'd have to be decent in the air to make it in the second tier. I'm not expecting the Spanish waiter level of competence just because he plays at a lower level. I'm actually not expecting to see him at all.
Fair enough Gooner. All but one or two EPL teams start non English keepers so a lower division or the SPL are his only options. I discovered that Woy picked Jack Butlin becuase he starts for the U 21 side. I understand his thinking since he is starting ahead of Jason Steele who starts for Middlesbrough. Frankie Fielding who started for the U21 side last summer is a full time starter for Derby County.Since Ben Foster retired from international footie, wouldn't Frankie Fielding or Jason Steele be more logical choices for that third choice keeper then someone who had to be shipped to Cheltenham to play first team football. Fielding and Steele are or have been part of the U21 set up if one dimensional Woy strongly insists on using that logic. I bet Woy wishes that Blackpool's Matt Gilks , who was born and raised in Rochdale, hadn't been included in the Scottish squad for a couple of Euro qualifiers in 2010 because he surely would have been on the plane to Poland. He has played well with Blackpool and did a good job in the EPL last season. Too late now . What a shame.
Actually my post should have read Spanish waiter level of incompetence.
I think the idea of bringing along an U21 guy that Roy or someone around him believes can at least succeed Robert Green in a few years isn't the worst thing especially since he's really, very unlikely to play at all. The upsides are him getting bedded into the national set-up in time to be a less unusual pick for WC14 qualifying.
I just hope that they're wrapping Joe Hart in cotton wool until June 11th.
According to the news show on FSC, Jack Butland is missing from the squad because he has not returned from a vacation. What a bloody moron! The only bedding he has is in a hotel at some beach resort.
What a numpty!
More good news out of the England camp as Frankie Lampard has been ruled out of the Euros with a gammy knee. Let's hope Woy can again avoid the temptation of calling up Jordan Henderson. Can we have another forward, please?
